I'm usually in the Schertz area about once a month and was craving Thai food, so I decided to try Thai Chef based on the Yelp reviews--and the fact that they're open on Mondays, which already puts them ahead of a lot of restaurants. I stopped in around 3 PM. First impression from outside wasn't great. Some of the lettering on the sign was peeling, there were a few bird nests around the exterior, and the phone number signage only showed the "210" area code. Still, the reviews were strong enough that I decided to give it a shot. Inside, the menu was surprisingly extensive, with Thai, Chinese, Pho, and sushi options. I briefly considered sushi, but figured Thai was the safer bet given the restaurant's name. One thing that stood out though was that the sushi bar itself was mostly blocked from view by decorations and bottles, so you really couldn't see the fish or prep area. Service started off well. I was seated quickly and the waiter brought menus right away. I asked him whether he preferred the red curry or the Pad Phet, but he mentioned he was new and hadn't tried either dish yet. I ended up going with the Pad Phet because it offered a combo option with chicken, beef, and shrimp. For appetizers, I ordered the Thai spring rolls and seaweed salad. The spring rolls came out quickly and were very good--crispy, fresh, and probably one of the stronger parts of the meal. My entree arrived shortly after and was also enjoyable overall. By the time I finished eating, I assumed the seaweed salad had simply been forgotten. Then, while I was trying to flag down the waiter for the check, he returned with the salad and apologized for the delay. To his credit, he acknowledged it right away. The presentation was nice, although the salad itself felt a bit underdressed. What held the experience back most for me was the overall upkeep and atmosphere. There were quite a few small things that individually wouldn't matter much, but together created a worn-down impression: peeling wallpaper in several spots, empty boxes near the entrance and wine storage area, and wine bottles arranged somewhat haphazardly. Even little details--like the obstructed sushi bar and uneven decor--added up to a space that felt less polished than it could be. Overall, I enjoyed the food and would consider stopping in again when I'm in the area, but the restaurant would really benefit from a little more attention to presentation and maintenance to better match the quality of the meal itself. read more

I really wanted to love this place, and based on the reviews, I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but Thai Chef just didn't do it for me. My review is based on a takeout order. We ordered chicken pad thai, a Cibolo sushi roll, and a Schertz sushi roll. First, when ordering at a Thai restaurant, I'm used to being asked for a spice preference. We weren't asked this when placing our order, so I'm not sure if that's normal or just an oversight by the girl taking our order. Our pad thai had zero spice and was very sweet -- not what I'm used to at all. Even my 13-year-old son wouldn't eat it. The sushi rolls were okay. They didn't blow my mind, but they weren't bad either. Overall, everything was just "okay," which to me is the definition of a 3-star review. Unfortunately, we won't be back, and my hunt continues for a new go-to Thai restaurant. read more

I love That food and I always compare every Thai restaurant to the Thai food I've had in Thailand. A lot miss the mark but I will say Thai Chef is a must try. The service was A1 the waitress was very attractive and made a recommendation when I was torn between options. The restaurant is a nice size considering it is in a plaza. I ordered the seafood combination curry (Thai spicy) it was flavorful. The seafood was cooked perfectly. It was so good that I didn't even take a picture . When it came to dessert I couldn't pick so I had two: mango sticky rice and flan. Definitely suggest giving them a try. read more

It was busy, there was a lot of people. We had to wait a bit until being seated, but not too long. The food was fresh and everything was decent. I wasn't a fan of the Austin deep fried sushi rolls, BUT their regular sushi rolls (which came with the bento box were delicious). I had miso soup, but forgot to take a photo because I devoured it.. it tasted perfect! In terms of ambiance, the restaurant is a bit small, and maybe a bit crowded. Their high chairs are not typical sturdy wooden restaurant ones, and I felt a bit paranoid with my baby in it (because it has 4 individual legs, and if someone trips on the high chair they might take your baby down with them). Overall, a decent place to go, closer and more convenient than my favorite Japanese place in San Antonio. I think I'd prefer to take it out rather than dine in, but I would recommend it. read more

A very small restaurant off FM78 between Schertz and Cibolo. The service was very nice and quite helpful. We started with the papaya salad. The fish sauce was a little heavy. The fruit with veggies came in rather large chunks with a side of romaine lettuce leaves. Might have been meant to be a lettuce wrap but it did not work well. Now ... the Pho and massaman were AMAZING. The veggie pho was full of lots of veggies ... amount and variety. The broth was savory. The massaman had a deep curry sauce ... a little heat that slowly built. Packed with chicken, potatoes and cashews ... rice on the side. By mistake I ended up at this restaurant. Never heard of it before. I had to follow my friend with a damaged tire to this side of town and stumbled upon it. We were starving! The place is packed! It is a smaller restaurant and every single table is occupied which made me even more curious to try it out. The waitresses are super friendly and the tables are so close to each other we started chatting with our neighbors. Everyone is praising the food. We get a curry, pad Thai, spring rolls and a couple other appetizers. To my surprise the food was delicious! I will definitely be back when I am on this side of town read more

Tried it for the first time. We will come back. The up-side - the staff was very friendly and the food was great (eventually). They probably couldn't fit another table in the space that exists, which does mean it is fairly noisy when there are a lot of folks eating. My wife had the drunken noodles with pork and they were very good - flavorful and appropriately spicy. I ordered the mixed vegetables with beef, chicken and pork and asked that it be prepared extra spicy. When it came out it had absolutely no spiciness to it - in fact it was the least spicy Thai food I've ever eaten. I sent it back and the waiter apologized - not sure if he told them no spice? Anyhow - when it came back out it was spicy like I expected and very flavorful - I would definitely order it again. So, asides from the mixup on my first plate of food and the noisiness - very good. We usually stop at Noli's Vite on FM 78 for lunch after coming home from JB Randolph. It was closed so decided to try Thai Chef. Very, very good Thai cuisine and I have to say they make the best Tom Kah Gai soup I've had since moving to this area. We also enjoyed Pad Thai noodles - also very delicious! Thai Chef is cooking some of the most delicious Thai food I've had. The classic Drunken Noodle is spiced just enough that you know you've accomplished something, and the noodles are spot on al dente (chef's kiss). The chicken satay appetizer is tender, lightly seasoned, and accompanied by a phenomenal spicy peanut sauce. The space is intimate and warm, and managed by kind and engaged staff. This is most evident as the staff greets regulars by their first name... I love this! I highly recommend you try Thai Chef, and I have no doubt you'll add it to your dining rotation. This place knows how to please a sushi snob! I came in alone for lunch today & was pleased to find a very cozy interior, excellent customer service, fresh sushi & fair pricing. I got a rainbow roll & spicy tuna roll, some seaweed salad & a glass of water with lemon. The sushi was fresh, fish cold even atop room temp rice & the rolls are fairly large. A lot of places can be stingy with the seaweed salad portion but this place was very generous. My water never went below half & I was checked on multiple times during my lunch. Can't wait to try their Asian cuisine, that'll be probably what my boyfriend opts for when I show him this place. 10/10 will be back! Thank you very much. read more

What a great Thai place near Randolph AFB! The food was authentic and very fresh with amazing flavors and perfect presentation. The staff was very attentive and having a reservation was essential for this busy place. We shared all the items and it gave us all the opportunity to check out all the food combinations. I always love coming here for some great food. The place is small, that's my only issue if I needed to have one. But I've never had to wait long, service is fast and we usually get seated within a few minutes. One of my favorite dishes is NAM TAH DEER that I usually have only seen at a place in medical center so I was ecstatic when I saw it offered her. So glad this place in my neighborhood!!! I have driven passed this right here in Cibolo a million times to go to my- THEN favorite Thai restaurant that I like wayyyy out on Walzem Road. I go 25 mins away happily, because they do my curry right! But now- I found a new love!! My wife brought me out to this place and I am so glad she did!!! I got the appetizer shrimp and it was nice and crunchy! Their great service brought the food out quick and hot. My curry of choice was the Massaman Curry with chicken. This dish was an absolute HOMERUN! I can't wait to go back to explore more of the menu. The curry here is amazing. I like the Massaman Curry while my husband likes Red curry. We order extra rice because of its small portion size compared to the curry. If you like extra spice, I recommend adding some Carolina reaper to the meal, can buy it on amazon. I have tried their sushi and it was good, but I keep going back for the curry.
