I was pretty excited to try this new restaurant, but my first visit was pretty flat. Even though it has the word "Thai" in its name, the restaurant menu is a hodgepodge of Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese dishes. A Sloppy menu is usually an off putting flag and in this case was no exception as it tastes like the food is either being made hours in advance or being prepared from prepackaged pastes. I'd love to see the chefs prepare the food to be proven wrong. Service is pretty poor here. The wait staff asked for our drink orders, but the restaurant doesn't provide a drink menu. The waitress wasn't able to give us any options for drinks so we just ordered water and a soda. The restaurant tables are also crammed. Each table has a large round serving tray that must have been a foot in diameter with s&p along with sriracha and hoisin sauce. If you're expecting the usual Thai condiments of sugar, fish sauce, chili flakes, and vinegar- they are not in this tray. But all this to say that we sat at a 4 top and ordered 2 entrees and one app and the plates wouldn't fit on the tables. Secondly, why bother calling them appetizers when every single item we ordered came out at the same time, less than 5 minutes after we placed our order? Getting the food so quickly was also a little concerning which is why I suspect it was all prepared ahead of time. The spring rolls were good I have no complaints there. But the drunken noodles were terrible. The color was off, the dish was dry, the cuts of beef seemed to be the lowest quality of beef the restaurant could scrape up, and the vegetable portion was abysmal. The noodles themselves had a gluey texture and everything had a which char texture which makes me suspect the dish is made ahead of time and then quickly reheated on a wok when it is ordered. The panang curry tasted tasted good. I disagree a little with the choice of veg as it is usually served with bell peppers but here it's full of mostly beans, along with your choice of protein. The main complaint I have with this dish is that it's nothing I couldn't have whipped up myself at home with a package of panang curry paste, some beans and some raw shrimp. There's no complexity to the curry being served here. Overall I couldn't even give this place 3 stars because I'd be willing to go back to a 3 star restaurant if I was in the mood but I can easily say I will never return to Thai Chef. The meals are very affordable though. In my opinion I would rather pay a little more for better food, but maybe this is what the local patrons like? read more

It is a pretty small restaurant. Tables are very close together so it's not the place to go to try to have a private conversation, but its clean, has a nice cozy feel and the staff I encountered were friendly. I consider myself a foodie and am a little bit of a snob about my pad thai having lived in major cities like Boston and Chicago. I REALLY enjoy their pad thai, the sauce is umami with the perfect blend of sweet and they are not stingy with the peanuts. The portion is definitely on the smaller side. I've only been around lunch time, not sure if it's a bigger portion at dinner time. Eel bento box is decent as well. The potstickers that come in the bento box are flavorful and the salad is high end leafy greens. My only complaint is that I wish they'd put eel sauce on the eel served in the bento box and maybe a little green onion garnish as well. I've ordered the Eel bento box twice now and neither time did it have eel sauce. Guess I'll have to ask for it to be added next time. read more

First, ordered General Tso Chicken and it was nothing but brown sugar and cinnamon covered chicken nuggets, not spicy, like it's supposed to be but sweet as can be! Second, wife ordered the masuman curry and the potatoes were literally crunchy!! Not even close to being done. Lastly, this idiot and his friends were at the bar drunk off their a$$ and laughing so loud it was nerve racking! We've been here a dozen times and this will be our last. So sad..... read more

I have been there probably 5 times since my last review, all to-go orders. The Prince of Thai is probably the best meal I have had in the area, when you take into consideration it was to-go that is kind of shocking IMO. They are doing a good job of maintaining space at the tables. In all honesty it's probably the best salmon dish in the San Antonio area and I eat salmon at a lot places, its one of my favorite fish. read more

Some friends took me for lunch today and wow! It was delicious! The place is small and was pretty packed for lunch time on a Thursday. The menu is extensive and there is something for everyone. 2 of us split the Sashimi Deluxe and an order of eel nigiri and salmon roe nigiri. Super fresh and tasty. The 3rd in our party had the Phat Thai with beef. I got to try that too and the beef was tender and the noodles were flavorful. I washed it down with a Kirin Ichiban. Yummy! I came in here with some co-workers for lunch and enjoyed my lunch special lo mein with tofu ($7.95)! The lunch special included soup and salad. Being a vegetarian I requested the miso soup and they kindly obliged. I enjoyed the miso soup it was mixed just right and nothing settled out. The salad was also a nice treat, it had an Asian sesame sauce that was refreshing. When my lo mein came out it was hot and fresh! I appreciated that the tofu was fried as I am a southern girl in conjunction with being a vegetarian. I took my first bite and wanted more and more my food couldn't cool down fast enough. I ate the whole plate as it tasted great. Service was a bit slow but it could've been because of the lunch crowd. The restaurant isn't very big but they do have outside seating if it's crowded inside. I like that the menu is very vast with many options of food and drinks. They do get busy so be patient and kind. I've had their sushi, Tom Yum soup, and chicken fried rice. I usually come here for the fried rice. Thai fried rice is way better than Chinese fried rice.
