We decided to revisit the restaurant after experiencing an excellent meal several months ago. All the soups are exceptional. However, I ordered their tiger cry, which is grilled rib eye steak served with fresh garlic and fish sauce. Although the beef was a generous serving, the meat had a burnt taste to it, which I suspect was from burnt grease and meat from inadequate cleaning of the grill. Very unappetizing. A pretty popular place because if you go for lunch and eat inside there could be a wait for a table because the place isn't overly big and it looks unassuming, but the food is delicious. By far the best Pad Thai I have in had in city. They also add some sauce to theirs but it's not as heavy as other places I've been to. Thai Dee is our go to Thai in SA. Unfortunately, that's mostly because the selection sucks, but Thai Dee does a solid job. Sometimes their dishes come out inedibly spicy, other times mild - I haven't figured out what the trigger is yet. They do solid Thai curries and even serve good Thai tea (with boba!). Don't get me wrong... It's good, but I wish there was a better option in SA. Bottom line: I'll be back for a solid Thai curry. read more

We ordered shrimp dumplings that never came, so we can't judge those. We had chicken Panang curry supposed to be medium hot but was very mild and we had the pad see ew with beef and shrimp. Thai Dee is quite a ways up north from me so I had a fun little drive getting there. I almost didn't even want to go in because of all of the construction going on around it. I really didn't want to go in after I saw it's tattered old banner falling off and the shady convenience store next door. Everything was just screaming bad idea but I had already come all this way so might as well. Right when I get in the restaurant the nicest server ever comes up to me and asks how many people. I say one and he didn't even judge me for being a loser. He asks if I'm okay with the seat right by the door and I'm like sure because I really don't care and if I need to run for some odd reason I am right by the exit. Anyways, as I'm busy looking through old pictures in my phone I stop and take a look around. The restaurant is pretty cramped but can fit a decent amount of people thanks to it. It was lunch time too so a whole bunch of people were here for those sick lunch deals. I already knew what I wanted before I even stepped in those doors. The ever so beloved red curry pumpkin. I look for it on the lunch menu but it's not there so I get a little scared. The server asks if I know what I want and I say the red curry pumpkin but I don't see it on the menu. He takes the menu out of my hands and says we can do that for you but it will be dinner pricing is that okay? I'm all like of course my ninja and he goes on his way. I don't expect to see him again so soon but he comes with this little soup bowl. I'm just like what is this I didn't even order this but I didn't say it out loud because I was already eating it. The soup was what I believe to be a chicken broth with a bunch of veggies and some beef like meat in it. It was super delicious and super free which is super awesome. After waiting for about 15 minutes or so he comes with this plate with a mound of rice and a big freaking bowl of red curry pumpkin. I look inside and smell the aroma of the curry. My body was ready. Alright, I'm asian. Not the the type that eats curry frequently but the type that still eats it sometimes. I've had Korean, Japanese, and Indian curry numerous times but this red curry pumpkin was ridonkulous. I never even really liked curry until I ate the one here. The amount of pumpkin and chicken in the curry was perfect. You could get a little bit of something with every bite of rice. I can't even explain to you with words how good and how happy I was while eating the dish. It was like in Ratatouille when Ivan Ego gets sent back in time except I wasn't sent backwards. I was sent to the future and I saw myself still sitting there eating that red curry pumpkin for the rest of my life. As I was about 2/5 done with my meal another server comes up to me and asks if I wanted a to-go box. I almost got angry. First of all, I never even asked for one or talked to her about a to-go box. Second, I was still eating and there was a lot left. Third, how dare anyone momentarily stop me from eating this nectar of the Thai gods!? Anyways, I can't speak for anything else on the menu or their terrible location but that red curry pumpkin is the truth and though Jack Nicholson doesn't believe that you can handle the truth. This north side Thai spot is tucked away by a corner store. It's very unassuming but as soon as you enter you'll smell the goodness and feel at home. The decor is inviting and feels authentic. I usually get Panang Curry but since they offered a Red Pumpkin Curry I had to try some. It did not disappoint. Big chunks of pumpkin squash, yummy pieces of fresh basil, well cooked tofu and a perfectly married coconut red curry. The spice level was lovely. I also tried the fresh summer rolls with tofu. They were okay. I wouldn't get them again. They skins were tough and the tofu had a funky taste. I also didn't like the peanut sauce. It tasted more like a chili sauce and not enough peanut sauce. I did try my friends Tom Ka Soup with tofu and it was amazing. Very fresh flavors like ginger and lemongrass. The mushrooms and cabbage had a nice flavor too that popped in my mouth. Thai Dee was a very pleasant surprise! The reviews are great and I'm always a believer in hole-in-the-walls, Thai Dee did not disappoint. We walked in with about an hour left to close and we're quickly seated, never once feeling rushed or like we were inconveniencing then. Our waitress was very sweet and patient with us as we asked some questions about the menu. We ordered the Potstickers (best I've had! I usually am deterred from potstickers as most restaurants make them about as well as Costco microwave potstickers), Tom Yum soup (very good portion for the price and had a new flavor I've never tasted, very yummy) and the Red Curry Pumpkin (perfect amount of spice that left nothing desired, very delicious and the simmered pumpkin gave a very nice flavor). This is my go to Thai place. After visiting Thailand, it was hard to find a place that tasted authentic back home, but this place nails it. My favorites are the tom yum soup and pad thai. The soup always comes out nice and hot with that delicious spiciness. They allow you to add just about whatever inside the soup, I usually stay with shrimp and/or tofu. For the pad Thai they allow you to adjust the spice level for your liking and it always comes out delicious. When in season also be sure to try the mango sticky rice dessert. That sweet coconut and the fresh mango pair together beautifully. The service is always great here and the staff very friendly. My husband and I have been coming here for the past 5 years or so and they always remember us. A great taste of Thailand here in San Antonio. read more

This place is totally different unassuming on the outside. In fact, you might not even notice it if you weren't looking for it. On the inside it is nicely decorated and clean with a good number of tables. I ordered the beef salad and seafood curry both Thai spicy. Like normal, they never think the white boy can handle it and neither dish was very spicy. Not a problem, as I have been through this before and it can take time for them to learn your limits. The curry was richly flavored and the seafood was tender and delicious. The beef salad was nicely grilled with a strong lime and cilantro flavor which was perfect. I missed the crushed roasted rice that is often in this type of salad, but it was not a deal breaker. The service was top notch, with multiple servers ensuring my tea was refilled and empty plates were cleared. I will definitely be bookmarking this place. Thanks for the tasty meal! read more

The first time I came here, I thought the food was a touch too sweet for me. But the overall flavors were quite authentic. So I came back for more & more & more. I would request that they'd dial down on the sugar for me and increase the spice level. (The best time to do this is NOT during the lunch rush, of course.) They've been quite nice about accommodating me and I truly appreciate that :) Their noodle dishes & fried rice always have a nice "wok hei" & I love that. That tells me that they are using a well seasoned wok on super high heat. Thumbs up! I also enjoy their curries. It's not watered down like some other Thai restaurants in town. Sometimes they'll even have special "jeows" :) It's like a Thai/Laotian salsa. Not on the menu. It's something they make for themselves. But thanks to Dave S.'s tip, I always ask. I wish they'd put it on the menu. Not a fan of their egg rolls though. Too much veggie. Plus, I prefer the rice paper wrapper that puffs up a bit and has a nice crisp & chew when fried. They don't always have sticky rice on hand :( I really like sticky rice. It's a staple for this Lao girl. Sometimes, they'll forget that I always ask for NO BEAN SPROUTS. Tucked between a godawful convenient store and Furniture for a Cause is an oasis called, Thai Dee. To the unsuspecting patron who sees a parking lot littered with used beer cans and signs telling you where to purchase your next scratch off tickets, I've learned one thing; never judge a book by it's cover. Inside this restaurant is a palace of unique flavors. Let your palette's ability to experience new flavors be your guide! Instead of reviewing this, in terms of its context I feel it's much better to highlight the three main points of this establishment: ambiance, food and service. 1st the ambiance is quaint, cozy and welcoming. There are wooden paneled walls and spacious seating, however limited. Also adorned on the walls are paintings which totally compliment the space. It feels a bit hipster and divey but it has a laid back vibe to it, like it doesn't take itself serious. It seems like a place a person can take a date to or even an occasion for friends to share food and drink. Which brings me to this point, you can bring your favorite brew or wine. Yes, Thai Dee is BYOB! 2nd the food is amazing! For an appetizer I had the vegetable spring rolls which were served hot and quickly. I decided on Lemongrass Chicken for an entree. It comes with a white steamed rice. When the server brought out the food, and again rather shortly there after I ordered it, I freaked out on the size of the bowl! The portion that they serve you is very, very generous well worth the price. The chicken was soft and tender. It had a broth that seemed to splash all over the vegetables, pods and all. I detected a subtle hint of peanut flavor in the rice, I presume it is the oil they use to prepare it with. But I think the major selling point of the dish is the accompanying spicy sauce that it is served with. I poured it on top of my rice and chicken and it took the dish to the next level! Good thing for me I had my brew and my water in tow. Dang that sauce was spicy! But in the best possible way. And lastly the service is impeccable. The staff is both friendly and extremely personable. In my belief, they make the space seem what it is meant to be, welcoming. I have gone to places where servers ignore you. Or you are treated like they are doing you a favor. A restaurant must always know patrons have make an impression of your place right when they step though the door. Thankfully In the case of Thai Dee it is a very friendly and humble one. Sure Thai Dee is located in a questionable area. Sure you will be clamoring to find a place to park here. But you will not be disappointed if you come here. Like I said before food is not solely about taste but how does it make us feel? Do we eat and share that experience with friends or a date? I may be a novice to the infinite possibilities of Asian Cuisine but I think this is a good foray into that. And if you spot a an empty beer can of the Real Ale's, "Iron Swan" in the parking lot I'm not the one who left it there. I pinky swear! read more

3.5 star. I came to this restaurant once when I flew to SA for my apartment hunting trip before I relocated here. I read some of the reviews before my trip so I knew it is in a sketchy neighborhood. When I pulled up my rental car here, I was like "wow this is indeed a sketchy area". I made sure to click my remote 3 times to ensure I locked my car and also parked my car right in front of the restaurant so I could keep an eye on it. It is probably not that bad. But since I was visiting from out of town, I wanted to be extra careful. The inside was actually not sketchy at all! It was very nice and cozy. My server was super friendly and we had a nice little conversation. I was impressed that she was wearing a very pretty Thai outfit, that's cute! I couldn't afford food coma b/c I needed to look at more apartments so I only ordered Pad Thai. I got my food quickly, it was good but very greasy for some reason. The portion was big so i only finished half of it. I feel I should give Thai Dee another chance. Maybe I will come back one of these days and update my review. But because it is far from me and there are a few decent Thai places that are a lot closer, I can't justify going out of my way for another visit here. Amazing great food!!! Spicy noodles, is no joke! It's spicy! i got it with shrimp (huge) & chicken :) the wait staff is phenomenal! My drink was never empty, everyone is super nice and smiling! We started off with the soup they give you as soon as you seat down, sweet and savory. And mushroom galore. Then we got ragoons. They were perfect and yummy and super fresh!!! My boyfriend got the pad Thai it was yum! We will go back soon. BYOB! So I admit I came back again the next day, with my mother and brother, my mother got the basil noodles, she absolutely loved it, as I knew she would. My brother got, the lemon grass, with tofu instead of chicken. It looked delious and tasted delicious. The soup of the day today was pretty much the same brother as the mushroom one, but only with cabbage this time. I order the pad see eew, it was just perfect, especially for a beginner, with thick noodles, and broccoli, eggs and shrimp and chicken. Was so tasty and yumm. And I got it mild. The service is top notch. I had the Pad Thai, which was absolutely amazing. They never disappoint. Their Thai iced tea tastes more like coffee. The interior decor is kinda weird. Authentic pictures of the King (no, not Elvis). It looks like they're attempting to cover the interior in wood, but got distracted and gave up halfway through. I don't know what they're up to, but the food is fantastic. The portions are large, and delicious. My dining companion had the green curry chicken. I sampled this, and it was amazing! Service was prompt. We ordered crispy fried tofu. It came with a sweet sauce. I prefer my fried tofu dipped in soy sauce but the sweet and spicy sauce was not too bad. The tofu was boring though... I'm pretty sure they just cut up big blocks of tofu and fry them. It is an easy appetizer. I like tofu stuffed with mushrooms or lemongrass to jazz them up a little. For our entrees we got the 3 flavor fish and pumpkin curry with chicken. The pumpkin curry was delicious! If not for that curry I would have given this place 3 stars. I loved the sweetness of the squash and the flavorful and spicy curry broth. It paired incredibly well with the steamed rice that came with the dish. The chicken was plain and nothing to write home about but I didn't have high expectations for it to begin with. But, after reheating the leftovers at home, the chicken soaked in more curry flavor and transformed into tender and flavorful morsels. So good. The 3 flavor fish was good but a little too sweet and not spicy enough. After the pumpkin curry the fried fish paled in comparison. I loved the onions and tomatoes in the dish though. Hands down, BEST Thai food I've had not just in SA but EVER! My mom, who Loves Thai food came to visit me and I wanted to take her what SA had to offer. I have tried many places around town but hadn't found anywhere that was really great. So, I turned to my trusted Yelpers to give me some pointers and everyone was pointing me to Thai Dee. So, I picked her up from the airport and headed over to Thai Dee. When I pulled up, I will be honest, I wasn't sure whether to turn around and go back to the Thai place I had passed on my way there. The exterior is definitely not inviting and is not in the nicest part of town. Unfortunately, their sign has been vandalized and has graffitti written on it. We decided to brave it though and went inside. The interior is cozy. We got there at 5:00 and there was only one other party being served. The wait staff was incredibly attentive and the service was great. By the time our meals were served, the place was packed!! My mom got the pad thai, which she said was delicious. Hubby ordered the pad see ew and he said it was okay; normally he is more a curry fan, but decided to try something different. I ordered the spicy eggplant with chicken and I am telling you - the MOST delicious dish ever! I couldn't stop talking about it while I was eating and I'm still talking about it weeks later! Prices were great for the amount of food served. I noticed that other parties were bringing in their own alcoholic beverages to enjoy, for those who partake. I'm kind of a connoisseur of Pad Thai, and I definitely was not disappointed by any means. The flavor was absolutely there, and the tofu was fried to perfection! I will highly recommend the pad Thai dish to those who dislike fish with every fiber of their being because there is an option for the dish to be made without fish sauce. The vegetable egg rolls were a great addition as well. With everything have being said, I'm going to give a rating of 4.5/5 because I ordered "Thai hot" and was not impressed by any means in regards to the spice level. Everything about this place is wonderful. The service is great. On a weekend evening, expect a crowd. The place is small, so arrive early if you are bringing a big group along. The place is also BYOB. We love taking a bottle of wine or a case of beer. We actually celebrated our 5th year anniversary here & brought a bottle of champagne! My favorite is the combination fried rice (with huge pieces of shrimp!), red curry with chicken, pad thai, spring rolls, .... I can go on and on! The food is fresh and arrives hot! We went here for dinner last night. The road getting there was terrible. I was hoping the meal would be worth it. We walked in and the place was filled so we had about a five minute wait that wasn't too bad. We got the shrimp rolls for an appetizer and they were really good. You get six and the breading was great. I really like the sauce that is served on the side. I got a rice noodle dish with shrimp and my date got a salad with beef. I got my plate and she got her side of rice. We had to ask for napkins as there were none on the table. Her plate did not arrive for about 5 more minutes. I asked for chop sticks because the plate came with a spoon. I find eating noodles with a spoon difficult. When her plate arrived it came with a spoon as well. I've never seen a person eat a salad with a spoon so we asked for a fork. My dish was very good I really liked it. Her dish was not only late but the beef was dry. I was going to subtract 3 stars for the main courses not arriving together, the no tableware or napkins, and the dry beef. But when I paid and was asked about the meal I gave my opinion and they took ten percent off. So I am taking 2 stars off. Craved thai on the way home from the airport and stopped here for food after dropping off a friend. We got pick up. This is only the second place in San Antonio I've found authentic pad kee mao (drunken noodles), so I approve! It had a good amount of spice and was soy sauce based like it should be. There was also a good amount of basil. My friend got the pad see ew and it was pretty good also, but not as flavorful as the pad kee mao. The beef was also tender in both dishes and there was a good amount, although I would have preferred to have more noodles rather than beef. Overall, if I'm in the area with friends I would like to try more things on the menu. One con is the restaurant is located in a pretty sketch part of town and is pretty sketch looking on the outside. The inside is pretty cozy though. I don't think I'd feel safe coming here at night without friends. Overall, pretty solid thai food though. read more
