Do not let the location fool you, this place is a gem. The service is very friendly and prompt and the ambiance is clean, welcoming, and a great spot for lunch. The food was all delicious. The husband had the Thai Light (supposedly not so spicy; had shrimp, sliced carrots, etc. He said it was a bit spicy). He ate it. Mine made my lips numb despite asking for just a '2' spice level. Ha, ha. It was still good. I should have taken the rest of the sauce to go. It would have been great over white rice tomorrow. TLDR: A hidden gem of a place that's apparently a quarter-century long staple for Thai food in San Antonio. Thai Dee is a nifty little spot with very attentive service and a unique atmosphere. It's nice when a restaurant is consistent, and this one's been so good that one of my dining companions has been coming here on and off for 20+ years! The three dishes tried were the pad woon sen, the pad kee mao, and the pad see eew. The woon sen is a little on the dry side, understandable as it's got mung bean noodles in it. The flat rice noodles in the other two dishes were excellent, and the kee mao had a zippy amount of spice in it! There are two items to keep in mind: 1) This restaurant is all hard surfaces, so it gets LOUD in here. 2) Parking is limited to around five spots and it's shared with a convenience store that *will* tow you, so check where you park! This place scores a 5 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Since moving back to SA after several years away, I relocated near our favorite restaurant. The original owner retired. The food pales compared to what it was. The chicken is over processed or dry or both. The quality and flavor of the soups, curries and any of the appetizers lacks any authentic Thai flavor, consistency or appetizing presentation. I don't know how I haven't reviewed this restaurant before. It is a staple in my eating-out rotation mainly because it is so consistently delicious and nearby. This is my favorite restaurant to enjoy a plate of pad woodsen with tofu. A simple dish but done exceptionally well and the entire staff makes me feel welcomed and appreciated whenever I order. Overall I cannot recommend it enough. Only drawbacks are small size and small parking lot that seems to always just only have one last parking spot open. It was a pleasant experience for the four of us: the food was tasty & the servings were generous. There were only a few customers when we got there at 5:30 on a Saturday evening but the customers slowly started streaming in as the night wore on. I've gotten take out here twice and the first time, the pad kee mao had the amount of spice and flavor you want in the drunken noodles, but the 2nd and 3rd time I ordered it, it lacked the spice and fish sauce-basil flavor. The pad thai the first 2 times were not great but my third time, the beef in the pad thai was super tender and the amount of tang and sweetness in rhe pad thai was amazing. I'm torn between giving this a 3 or 4 stars because of the inconsistency. I also ordered a papaya salad and it was way too sour. I do appreciate the ambiance of the place. From the looks of it, Thai Dee is my kind of place. It's somewhat small, unassuming, and has a divey yet kichy feel to it. Located on a quiet yet mildly dodgy stretch of town, it is one of the city's most popular Thai establishments. After a recent take out session, I can see why. Unlike the rest of Texas, they're still operating in pandemic mode. Take out is the only option as is credit cards since they're not accepting cash. There is obviously no indoor dining or delivery. All of the super friendly staff is masked up and there is sanitizer all over their dining area. I appreciate their cautious approach. Respect. I managed to try their tofu pad see yu, chicken tom yum soup, their infamous curry wings, beef pad thai, and chicken massaman curry. The prices were in the $10-13 range for entrees and I was pretty impressed with the portion. They did a good job of packing up the food and wrapped up the soups in plastic wrap. There's nothing more I hate than food spillage on the way home. From what I tasted, I've had better pad see yu and pad thai. Perhaps I should've upped the spice factor, but the noodle dishes seemed somewhat bland. I should also point out that the broccoli and bean sprouts were a bit on the excessive side. I'd probably tell them to go easy on both next time. I was somewhat impressed with the curry wings -- the meat was tender and the curry was very pungent. The latter would also apply to the tom yum, which was full of flavor and not too heavy with the mushroom. I wish I ordered some thai iced tea and their moo ping skewers as I was told this was something they do well. The most impressive item in the bunch was the massaman. The curry had a semi-thick gravy'ish component to it, a far cry from the watery versions I've had far too often. The chicken was very abundant, making me wish I had more rice to soak everything up. While they didn't have any potato in it, I was surprised to find avocado chunks instead. I'm not opposed to it, but it was quite different from what I was used to. I'd get his dish again and again. I came here not knowing what to expect. It is a small place that you have to look for or you will miss it but it's definitely worth a visit. I had Crab Rangoons and Pad Thai. Both were very good the Crab Ragoons had big chunks of crab and the sauce was delicious, this was the highlight of my meal for sure. The Pad Thai was good, it did not stand out from other Pad Thais I have had other places but it was still tastey. Unlike some other Thai restaurants we did not get the option of choosing our spice level.
