Expensive for mediocre thai food at best. Me and my wife had red and green curry and the dishes were awful. The curry was watery and not actual curry, just a bit of vegetable that you needed to dig in, in order to get them with a spoon. The red curry had a weird coconut milk flavor that was taking over the other spices, basically spicey coconut milk with chicken. Very disappointed. read more

For local Thai options, Thai Dee is as good as it gets. The food will make you overlook the lack of A/C, the parking situation, the neighbourhood, and the wait. Seriously. It's that good. All the curry options have the perfect combination of flavour and heat, the noodle dishes are appropriately sauced (I hate when asian places just drench noodles in sauce), but the real standouts are the hot plate dishes - Thai Dee-lite and Angry Ocean. The Angry Ocean dish has to be one of my favourite dishes in town period; you get a mix of seafood with your preferred level of spice brought out with a light sauce on a sizzling comal ... so good. read more

I'm half Thai and grew up with home cooked Thai food all my life, so I feel pretty confident when I say Thai Dee is the best Thai restaurant I've been to in SA, HANDS. DOWN. I've been here a couple times during lunch, and every time I'm just craving for more (my mom's even getting jealous). One of my favorite Thai dishes is green curry, and Thai Dee does it exceptionally well. I've only had that and their larb moo (pork), another one of my favorite dishes, and that too was phenomenal, and the portion was so big I was able to bring some home. As for the establishment itself, walking into Thai Dee I saw decorations that reminded me of my grandparents house growing up, and the wooden walls deff hit home for me, call it a wave of happy nostalgia. The servers working are always extremely nice and friendly, I have absolutely no complaint there. Every time I visit, Thai Dee is PACKED, and for good reason. Thai-Deeeee-LICIOUS! I was beginning to give up on Thai food in SA, but then came Thai Dee! I won't comment on the area because that's already extreeemely played out, but what I will say is that once you enter the door and have a seat amongst their hodgepodge mix of décor, you will be greeted with a smile and a warm cup of soup. Usually, the soups that are included with a lunch special at Thai/Asian places consist of a couple of pieces of cabbage and a whole lot of broth, or something equally lacking in consistency. Not here! It was the most delicious Tom Yum Gai I have had in a long while! Our order was taken promptly and all 3 servers seemed to work in sync to take care of the entire restaurant and not just their "assigned areas." For $7.99 you will be amazed at the huge portions they give you! I didn't think that my green curry with chicken and crunchy noodles was sweet, on the contrary, it was nice and spicy! My mouth was slightly on fire but that didn't stop me from eating more and more. The 2 spring rolls that come alongside the lunch specials were amazingly crunchy and tasty, and they hit it right on the mark with their egg roll dipping sauce. Once I swapped plates with my other half, I didn't wanna give it back! He ordered the pad woon sen, but with stir fried rice noodles instead of glass noodles. That dish, I will admit, was sweet. But nothing a little chili-garlic couldn't fix :) The noodles were not too greasy, the chicken was cooked to perfection, and the veggies still had a nice crunch. The food was so great that I would love to try out everything on their menu, something I am not always willing to do since I am quite comfortable with my comfort zone. As for the Thai coffee, the coffee was pretty strong, but not a problem since we just added a little bit of water. Perhaps a little extra cream would have been just as good? Quick tips: this restaurant is BYOB and if paying with plastic, they have a minimum of $10. You can also call ahead if you are in need of some tasty to-go food. I overheard the nice gentleman happily taking many, many orders over the phone. All in all, we will definitely be back! I went back today for their lunch specials (11am-230pm). For $7.99, you get a cup of soup, two egg rolls, and a main dish. Pretty incredible. The lunch menu has over 40 items on it. First of all, don't let the seedy location deter you. Thai Dee wasn't blessed with the best location, and over half the people in the immediate vicinity are probably just dropping by the Corner Food Mart next door for a forty-ounce Olde English 800 and a pack of Black-n-Milds. Don't feel guilty about the relief you feel after surviving the walk through the filthy parking lot and enter an quaint space full of families, businessmen, and attractive twenty-somethings that likely herald from another part of town. Everybody feels it. But that diamond-in-the-rough feel is precisely why Thai Dee deserves four stars. Years of excellent service, inviting atmosphere, low prices, and of course great Thai food have earned the steady devotion of well-to-do clientele who are still down to earth enough to bring their own bottle. The decor is a bit haphazard and incomplete, and slightly tacky goes without saying, but the lightly-stained wood paneling and plastic palm fronds accomplish the low-pressure South-Pacific feel. New furniture has been added in recent years, so loners, couples, small and large parties are freely accommodated. Gaze in wonder at the hundreds of bits of paper announcements taped to the wall behind the register, which look like they could have been fired onto the wall all at once after being loaded into the barrel of a shotgun. The service is excellent. We were seated almost immediately and furnished with cold glasses and an opener for our BYOB six pack. After ordering, our first item, sweet and sour vegetable soup, came in under 10 minutes. Well-proportioned and perfect for two, it was prepared with a restraint that is often wanting in Asian cuisine. Fresh vegetables bathed in a broth not too spicy, not too sour, not too salty, not too sweet. According to one of my party who is familiar with the dish, the chicken satay was on the right road but not quite there. Still enjoyable, she said, but not as interesting as a spicy peanut sauce should be. Our main course consisted of two of Thailand's national dishes, Pad Thai and Red Curry with shrimp. The Pad Thai also avoided several pit-falls, including excessive grease and a disproportionate measure of rice noodles. I loved the Red Curry, having had it several times, but again, one of my party found fault. "Not sweet enough," she said, wrinkling the bridge of her nose. But the highlight of the Thai Dee experience is the humility and gratitude displayed by the staff when I approached the register to pay. I believe I was thanked by five different people, multiple times, and the two behind the register bowed several times. You know what? Just for that I'm going to give Thai Dee FIVE STARS. Who knew that I would be eating damn good Thai food while visiting San Antonio? My plans were to eat nothing but tacos while I was down here for work, but one of my collegues found Thai Dee and raved, so I had to check it out. The atmosphere is 1970's era Asian restaurant--lots of wood paneling, vinyl table cloths under glass, etc, but you're not here for the view. I've had better tom kha (but not MUCH better), but Thai Dee's was still pretty tasty. The pad thai was also very good, but a little too sweet. The portions were juuussssttttt right. Some places give you too much and you have to let your belt out. I like a little more cilantro and green onion in mine too, but again, this was a very good dish. Girls Night Out found us at Thai Dee. Our friendly, soft spoken waiter opened a bottle of the wine we brought ourselves (Thai Dee lacks a liquor license, it is BYOB) and we began what was a wonderful dining experience. We started off with summer rolls, slightly chewy, but filled with fresh ingredients, including thinly sliced pork, cucumber, green leaf lettuce, carrots, and perfectly cooked angel hair rice noodles. The roll had a sweetness I really enjoyed, especially coupled with the breath-in-deeply, mouth-forming-an-"O" spicy chili dipping sauce. Another in our group had a simple crisp cucumber salad topped with a julienne of carrots, in a light sweet vinegar dressing. Very good and refreshing, a perfect foil for the spicy dipping sauce. The tempo of the service is casual so we never felt pressed. In fact, very much the opposite, it seemed expected that you take your time to enjoy each stage of your meal, along with the brilliant atmosphere (which changed markedly from the time we arrived). When we first arrived, only one other group was present, a party of six with a cooler and four bottles of wine on their table (foretelling the fun in store). Midway through, the crowd increased. The room filled with couples and families and gatherings of friends, alive with conversation and laughter. The vibe was bright and glimmering, in stark contrast to the very dimly lit space. Two in our party ordered the Spicy Pork with Cilantro. It came on a bed of iceberg lettuce, the tender pork matching nicely with the crispy lettuce. The sauce was very flavorful with strong cilantro and a vinegar finish. So very good. Another ordered the Pad Woodsen, a lively dish brimming with color and a mix of textures, making each bite interesting and appealing. I ordered the Spicy Grilled Eggplant. The dish included varied vegetables - Japanese eggplant, red and green bell peppers, and onion, as well as plenty of chicken but, alas, only two scrimpy shrimp. No matter, the dish was delish! The perfectly cooked vegetables and meat sat happily in a delightfully complex broth - rich and smoky with hints of licorice from the Thai basil, and a great spicy heat. Unfortunately, we did not leave room for dessert, although one in our party had the stunning Thai coffee which, with its sweetness, substituted nicely. However, next time I promised myself to have some restraint during the main course so I could indulge in the Mango Sweet Sticky Rice or the Coconut Ice Cream served over warm sweet sticky rice. They both sound amazing and with the quality of food we enjoyed, I am confident they are. I absolutely recommend Thai Dee. Thai Dee is my go-to Thai place in SA. Casey L. introduced me to it in January, and though it's not super close to me, I'll gladly venture out of my neighborhood to satisfy my Thai craving. Pretty much everything I've had here I've liked. The tom kha gai (coconut thai chicken soup) is tasty, but the serving is a little on the small side, so if you're expecting a meal-sized portion of soup, I'd order something extra to round out the meal. The summer rolls (spring rolls) are also super fresh and yummy, but not vegetarian-- they have little bits of sliced beef throughout. The menu offers the standard curries, noodles, and Thai specials. On my last visit, I had the spicy pork with cilantro. The pork was flavorful and tender, and was served atop a bed of crispy iceberg. My dining companion, the incomparable Ana F., had the chicken pad thai, which was also tasty, as far as Thai noodles go: not too spicy or greasy, and enough chicken, egg and scallion for every bite. Though I've heard fantastic things about their coconut ice cream, I'm always too full to try it. One of these days, though. I should also mention that the service, while always friendly, is sometimes a bit spotty. Love love LOVE this place. I go so often they know what I'm going to order before it comes out of my mouth. I usually get the Panang curry noodles, which is a basic red curry with coconut milk that has fried noodles added. The tom kha is also delicious, as is the coconut ice cream with sticky rice. For appetizers we usually order the fried tofu or pot stickers, but the shrimp rolls are great too. Basically, everything I've tried has been good. This place is family run, and the service is great. Brought my mom to Thai dee for lunch.. I orderd Chicken Pad Thai and She had the ginger Chicken yummmo.. I really cant get enough of this place food is excellent and staff is super friendly... Lunch specials are really a bargin you get the main course, a soup of the day and 2 spring rolls for under $7.00 before taxes cant beat that and servings are huge I always have some for lunch the next day.... This place is terrible for the 4.5 star rating on Yelp! I live in Austin where we have good Thai restaurants so since this place got over 200 reviews and a rating of 4.5 star, I was hoping this would be a decent Thai restaurant as I didn't have high hopes for good Thai food in San Antonio. However, this place is far beyond being nearly as average good as the Thai food trucks in Austin where those are considered decent Thai. First, this place looked so shady on the outside. The place was in a run down building. When you walk in, the place was old and small. Service was ok but it will take a long time from the time you order and get your food. It took us about 30 mins to get our food. Second, let's talk about the food quality. It's terrible. We paid $13 for a small bowl of shrimp tom yum soup. The soup came out cold and it was literally a bowl of sugar soup and with lime juice it in. It was so terribly sweet that my dad could even finish it. Then we ordered a shrimp pad see eww and a tofu pad kee Mao. Both also came out barely warm enough as if they just heat the food up in the microwave and served them! Also, both dishes used this sort of fettuccine noodle instead of the traditional wide rice noodle. Let's talk flavor, the pad kee Mao was tasteless and very spicy. The pad see eww was a bit better. We also ordered this crunchy fried pork rib dishes that was probably the best of the night out of all 4 dishes. Overall, this was below average Thai restaurant for food quality and service. If you look at the Yelp reviews, beware that the reviewers are not Asians that know what authentic good Thai food is so if you are Asian and used to eating good authentic Thai food, don't go here or you'll be disappointed like us. read more

I love Thai Dee's! I have to admit though, at first it was 'cause of their cute name. :o I'm female, what can I say?!? Anyhow, at first glance the restaurant seems a bit out of place at its location in a mini strip it shares with a tiny convenience store some might question popping in to. That aside the restaurant itself is a little treasure in this usually overlooked on this part of Blanco Rd. (inside 410). Once you enter the restaurant you will find the place is very nice and quaint and the staff is super nice. The menu is pretty vast...curries are yummy and other dishes are really something special. Oh and if you keep with the typical dishes like Pad Thai you'll still be surprised and satisfied. Oh, and did I mention they allow you to bring your own drinks?!? BYOB, that is. If you are into supporting local businesses and seeking tasty Thai, Thai Dees is really worth a try. Oh, oh, ohhh...I also forgot to mention the prices are very reasonable. I came in for lunch and got the Khee Mao (spicy noodles) lunch special and it was so bland! The soup was the best part of the meal because it had good flavor. The egg rolls seemed like the frozen ones you get at the grocery store and the noodles were just lacking flavor. I love pulling into a restaurant whose outside makes you question if eating there is even safe only to head inside and be treated to one of your most delicious lunches in a long long while. So, I love Thai food. I'm sort of devoted to another Thai place in town, but in the interest of Yelp (and at the suggestion of all these 4 and 5 star reviews) I decided to give Thai Dee a shot. And it was a Happy Day. BFF and I both opted for green curry. She had hers with crispy noodles, I took mine with sticky rice. Both were delicious. Now, as you may know from reading my reviews I love spicy food. So, while I ordered mine extra spicy and really felt it wasn't nearly spicy enough, bestie ordered hers mild and felt it was so spicy that she actually wound up taking off her jacket halfway through the meal bc she was so overheated. The service was exceptional. The staff here is top notch and honestly earned an entire star on their own. Really can't commend them enough on that! Very nice atmosphere. BYOB of wine or champagne friendly and VERY generous portions! The Sante chicken skewers and sticky rice were my favorites, along with the cucumber salad. Also the fried ribs are AMAZING!! The plates are huge and filled with large servings of food. Service is pretty quick and they don't stand over you all night, they leave and check in on you from time to time. You have to go up to the register to pay. First time here. Celebrating the end of the semester with some friends of mine, one in nursing school. Thankfully, the medical jargon (quite disgusting, actually. Imagine that.) ended when our meals came out. Panang, Massaman, and Thai Wrap were the meals. I sampled all and can say that they were all an enjoyable meal. The Thai tea is delicious. The ambiance is alright; kinda cramped. But it's a small place, so I understand. It's was packed this evening, but my bud, who comes here often, said it's never like this. Service was fantastic; we were seated quickly, drinks were quick, our order went in quickly, and the food came out fully cooked in just a few minutes. They've got a good machine going here. Dear Yelpers, I just wanted to report a small problem I had that didn't appear to concern the staff on our first visit to this highly recommended, delightful Thai restaurant on Blanco last night (2/5/11). I took a bite of noodles and got a hard crunch, which turned out to be at least one piece of porcelain chipped off the serving plate (I may have swallowed more). We noticed many of the dishes on our table were chipped. I showed the waiter the piece I retrieved from my mouth and told him it probably came from the plate and that I thought they should be more careful about using chipped plates. He took it and asked if I was OK, but not another word was said. Don't know if he showed the owner. Overall great food! I would slightly downgrade the quality of our appetizers (fried spring rolls and crab rangoon) which were rather greasy even for fried items, but no complaints on the entrees. We had drunken noodles (kee mao), lettuce wrapped pork, and red curry. Just failed service big-time on this incident. Guess we can stick to take-out which doesn't involve plates..... read more

Simply put, the best Thai food I have tasted in San Antonio. The walls are almost fully covered with huge wood panels. My friend jokingly asked, "which door should we walk through after dinner". With a shady, mom-and-pop garage right next to it and a non-chain convenience store on the other, this place has every reason to be the hole-in-the-wall diamond in the rough kind of place that we all crave. I have been about 3 times now and all of the dishes are delicious. Though the menu gives icons for spicy, you can ask for 'Thai spicy' for an extra, incredible kick in the mouth. Try the Angry Ocean and make it spicy. Delicious. The Pad Thai, a certain litmus test for Thai restaurants, was fresh and not too oily as is the problem with most of Thai Dee's rivals in SA. The lunch specials, however, are most notable. Huge portions, rice, 2 spring rolls, delicious soup (that comes without ordering it) for $5.95!! At least that's what mine was. read more

For about $22 (including a 10% take-out tip), I was able to get egg rolls, a small portion of Tom Yum soup, Pad Thai noodles, and rice pudding. That's not bad, and it's definitely cheaper than what the aloft hotel down the street would've charged! Portions were appropriate, and here are my thoughts on each of the items: Egg rolls: Bigger than most places, or I am getting too used to Vietnamese-style egg rolls LOL. They were probably about half the width of my palm and about 6in long, which is not bad at all. I got the pork egg rolls (also have a choice of veggies only), and they were good. Tom Yum soup: At first glance, I was a bit wary. Normally when I get Tom Yum soup, it has a reddish tint, but there was no red tint. In fact, because the soup was so brown, I thought they may have given the wrong soup (the coconut milk based soup). But after that first delicious sip, I thought, "Nope, it's the right soup!" The soup had the right amount of spice and lemongrass. Sometimes I wonder if I should just order the broth since I never eat all the veggies anyway. :-) I am glad though that this place has a side portion, as there are many Thai restaurants out there that do not. Pad Thai: This had the right amount of spice, even though it's interesting I was not asked to specify the amount. The noodles were cooked appropriately and unlike a Thai restaurant in Evansville, IN, did not make a squishy sound as you ate (a definite plus). My only concern about the entree is that there were a LOT of eggshells - so many I did not eat half of the dish. For this, I dock a star from 4 stars. Rice pudding: DELICIOUS and hit the spot after the last three items. The sweetness was just right - not too much but not too little. I finished all of this! I called ahead for pickup (prior to going to HEB nearby), the order was promised as ready within 15-20 minutes, and upon arrival, the order was waiting for me. Had there not been so many eggshells in my Pad Thai (probably a fluke), I would've given four stars. The ambience of the restaurant seemed homey with Thai decorations, and I loved the wood paneling. I got their chicken pad thai and it was very dry. Dry as in not just the chicken, but the whole plate itself. My friend got the tofu pad thai and hers was very moist. But even then, it wasn't that great. The serivce was fine in the beginning but when we were done, we sat there for a good 30+ mins before we realized no one was going to come. This is the mother of all Thai restaurants in San Antonio. You will not be able to find better fried tofu and fresh, creamy curries anywhere else. (If you do let me know). If you've read any of my previous posts you know that I value tofu as the one dish that makes it or break it for me. If the cook of the restaurant knows how to fry some tofu then I usually expect a high quality meal right after. This time around we had the fried tofu as appetizer. The tofu was crispy and it fully absorbed the flavors of the sweet and tangy sauce that accompanied it. It s an explosion of flavors in your mouth. I had the red pumpkin curry and my friend had the Musaman curry. I like to taste my curry sauces before I jump into the meal to truly appreciate the effort that was put into making the curry (most important part of the dish) and my God, I could have just have had that curry as a soup. The red pumpkin curry sauce was spicy, creamy, and perfect. I had a combination of vegetables and chicken. All vegetables tossed in my curry were fresh and delicious. The chicken truly absorbed all of the veggie and red curry flavors and it tasted amazing. I like to toss in some rice into my curry at a steady rate so that the rice does not absorb all the curry and the rice that was provided was just the right amount for my curry. My friend had the Musaman curry and this one is something else too.
