This is an interesting restaurant. It's a coffee shop and Thai food. I didn't try the coffee, but looks like they have a lot of coffee/breakfast options. I had the Pad See Ew (dragon noodle). Heck yeah. I could have eaten two plates. It wasn't spicy, although I was expecting it to at least be warm. The beef is a ground like beef that made an interesting texture. The veggie to beef to noodle ratio was pretty good. The menu wasn't deep and it's a order at the counter kind of place which isn't always my bag. Yummy in a bowl. I had the Thai Beef salad and it was delightfully fresh and of the perfect size. Carrots and cucumbers were slivers, so they were very subtle, which let the kicky dressing, fresh lettuce and grilled meat shine. Oh, those ice creams were tempting but I was full! My date loved his salad and wanted to drink up the basil-lime dressing. I do think it was over priced, thus the deduction of one star, but I bet their rent is high for that location and the sheer volume of the building. It clearly once was three shops, but now it functions as just the restaurant and coffee house, making it a little confusing. Nice outside patio for you and your loved ones (pets). I just came here for a single scoop cone of ice cream and it was really tasty. It was hard to choose between some of the flavors, all of which are vegan and I believe coconut milk based. Some of the flavors I sampled were quite icy so I didn't get them, but I chose the spirulina which actually had a great flavor, more like vanilla. But the winner was the super crispy gluten-free spirulina cone. It stayed crunchy the whole time and was a perfect accompaniment to the ice cream, with a stronger vanilla flavor with the hint of spirulina in there, too. I hope this isn't an example of what happens to a restaurant when it "takes tipping off the table." The service is consistently non-existent, with hipster/out of it servers. They drop water and a carafe when they first greet you so that you can fill your own water, and have a condiment bar you can go to yourself to retrieve what you need throughout your meal. And for this tipping is included? Didn't hear from our server after he took our order until he brought the bill. Then a quick goodnight. They don't try because they know their tip is included. And it's a generous tip at that. The food, which is the only reason I am rating it 2 instead of 1 star, is pretty good for my taste. My friend though could not stand the unusually, and excessively spiced pad Thai. Nor the dark meat they used for the chicken instead of white meat. Please get some quality control for the service and the food. Will not be back any time soon. read more

After our UT tour, we had lunch at THAI FRESH Coffee Bar & Restaurant. Good Tofu Sweet Potato Yellow Curry and Green Papaya Salad but what really thrilled our palates was their line of homemade organic vegan ice creams made with coconut milk! Thai cuisine is my daughter's foodie obsession, in particular the dessert Mango Sticky Rice. Most places serve this ubiquitous warm sweet rice treat with fresh mango and cream; here they use their delicously smooth mango ice cream. I had a small cup with a scoop each of Fresh Ginger Lemongrass and Orange Blossom Lemon, both incredibly good! Later that evening we couldn't resist a return to THAI FRESH on the way back to our Austin 'home'. This time Maya had her sticky rice topped with a rich Dark Chocolate ice cream; I savored another SMALL double scoop: Thai Tea (not Green Tea) and Thai Basil. YUMMMY! My brother and his girlfriend took us here while we were visiting Austin. We waited in to order - I ordered the drunken noodles and the bf ordered mixed vegetables over rice and some $2 Lone Stars. My brother and his gf ordered the coconut vermicelli and the spicy green beans over rice. We got a seat in the back, where my brother said they usually have live music, but there was none that evening. We got our food within 10 minutes. Mine was all right as was my boyfriend's. Nothing special about it. The coconut vermicelli was lacking flavor and my brother and his gf said the green beans were "gross" and didn't taste right, so I didn't try them. My brother said the ice cream was usually pretty good, but they ran out of the flavor we wanted to try, so we didn't have any of that either. I haven't returned here in years, and that was really a mistake., It has been some time since the days of choosing something from the deli case (it would be microwaved for you and put in a to-go box.).Now, it's a regular full-scale restaurant, and honestly it's some of the best Thai food I've had in Austin so far. Lived here 11 years, and I've never been able to approximate the delicious Thai tastes we found in Los Angeles. My two favorite things were the Green curry and the pad see ewe. The vegan ice cream over sticky rice was also very satisfying. Our server was Aneeka (Pippi Longstocking's best friend.). A gem. She knew the menu thoroughly, and was able to answer every question intelligently. Do you know rare that is these days? I really appreciate it when a server knows the food they serve. When a small mistake was made with the timing of my order, she comped my dessert without me having to complain or ask. That is how it should be! I don't complain on yelp about it. I will now be coming here regularly. Yay!!! Update: next time I came was less delicious; the tempeh tasted off and overall dish was too much oil. Great food! Loved everything on the table. Don't really care about the authenticity with so many amazing flavors well combined. Service was quick and responsive. Best ice cream I've had in Austin so far! Can't wait to go back. UPDATE: Still great! My new favorite is the Thai tea ice cream, still love the rice with chicken and struggle ordering something else, papaya salad is great, and the brunch menu is very good(plus, is not crowded). This place could be killing it if only it were not criminally overpriced with an uninviting hipster atmosphere. $20 (lunch) for a small bowl of curry with a side of dry brown rice and a Coke? Really?!? The curry itself was delicious. The sad part is this place used to be much better, then they decided to "wrap the tip into the prices" in an attempt to "bridge the wage gap," yada, yada. Really it's just a sad attempt to hike up their prices a ton under the veil of social betterment. I would rather just pay their servers a 20-25% tip for good service. At least they would seem more interested in providing quality service, but since the tip is now included, we had seemingly uninterested wait staff that was especially slow. Because hey, they're all getting paid "fairly" anyway, right? Overall, place has pretty tasty food but is just [sadly] far too overpriced for both quality and quantity, especially when comparing other spots in the area. Mixed bag: Thai Fresh was once a favorite of mine. I loved the food and that there have always been so many tasty gluten free offerings; that remains true. But the coldness of the service (there was little) this visit created a high level of frustration for me. This was my first trip back since the dining room re-opened. My friend's food was served before I could complete my order. She was almost done with her food when mine arrived. The green curry was good, maybe not on par with my last 10 visits but good. I wish the broccoli had not been over cooked. My basil soda was flat and unsweetened. I remembered it as fizzy, fresh and lightly sweet. The cracklings were fabulous as always! Thai Fresh has been a fair wage restaurant since it opened. The sign on the table where you get the QR code for the menu says so, yet when you check out it prompts you to tip before you get your food. You have to manually enter a no tip option. We had a few questions about the menu. Getting them answered required tracking someone down. During our lunch I interacted with three people. One could hardly be bothered to answer, the second was slightly more accommodating and the third was everything you would want in a person working in a customer facing environment; friendly, helpful and solution oriented. She could see I was frustrated and ultimately gave me my basil drink at no charge even though I tried to pay her. I appreciated the gesture. I think the lesson here is that I need to lower my expectations and understand that TF has changed the type of dining experience it provides. If you want a no server contact experience you will be delighted with the changes at TF. If you want a physical menu, and/or have questions go to the bar and order there. If you have multiple people ordering at your table and you want the food to come out at once you will need to hit the order button at the same time or order at the counter. read more

I went to lunch here with a friend and it was absolutely lovely. He had some appetizer that I'd never seen before that consisted of fried chicken skins on a bed of cilantro and other greens, I thought it was ok, and he loved it. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly, and knew exactly when to stop by and when to leave us alone. I ordered the Tom Kha with shrimp and my friend ordered the Pad Thai. The Tom Kha was delicious, fragrant, light and satisfying with lots of mushrooms and shrimp. My friend liked his Pad Thai and there was enough for him to take some home. I grabbed some of their goldenmilk turmeric ice cream as well which was wonderful. Everything was delicious and mostly healthy. Highly recommend. read more

This place exceeded my expectations on so many levels! Yes, the service is extremely slow, but I sort of like that they don't bother you while you dine. If you're not in a huge hurry, I absolutely recommend picking up a friend and popping over to Thai Fresh to sit outside and chat over DELICIOUS and very fresh food. So often, I stumble upon a quaint restaurant and the food is simply ho-hum. That was NOT the case with Thai Fresh! All of the ingredients tasted so fresh. The dishes were seasoned perfectly. The portions were perfectly sized. We had the kale salad to start as the cucumber salad was just going out of season! (I'll be back for you, cucumber salad!!!). The ginger-y dressing was perfect! I loved and highly recommend any seasonal salad they offer. We also had a ginger mint tea that was out of this world! So much so that I wanted to purchase some when we left. Their teas are local and are supplied by Z teas in Austin. I'll definitely be back for a pot of tea. For my main dish, I had their noodle soup! The broth was magical--not only did it taste so flavorful, I could just tell it was made with quality, healing ingredients. The noodles were cooked perfectly--i would order it again any day of the week! And the shrimp--was so fresh! I'm from California and I couldn't believe I was tasting such fresh shrimp in the middle of Texas! The desserts looked insanely great, particularly the matcha ice cream. I love Thai Fresh's food and atmosphere. When I first visited several years ago, I fell in love and kept coming back. I really, really love and adore their food, however things have changed a bit since tipping was taken away. The last time I was here, I stood waiting for a table for over 10 minutes. The place was practically empty. The cooks had to be the ones to alert the servers that people were waiting. Then, on top of that, where we asked to sit, we were not informed that that section was no longer serviced by servers, and when I asked at the register if anyone was going to come, I was rudely told off by staff. Finally...the last two times I've been, the portions have gotten smaller, and the rice was undercooked. Sad. It's becoming not worth the inflated prices anymore. read more

Staff was awesome. The food was disappointing. I took a cooking class here 6-7 years ago. The food was great. I moved outside the city & haven't eaten here in over four years so I was super excited! The Pad Thai was a pound of soggy pasta with no veggies & a handful of tofu- literally that was it. The sauce was oily & didn't even taste like a Pad Thai sauce. The basil lime drink was good. Just had a Fired Fried Chicken Sandwich on gluten free bread. It was amazing!!! The bread was perfect, it had a bit of a crust to it but still soft. The mayo was a bit spicier than I had hope it would. Thanks to the excellent lemonade it was tolerable. I can't wait to comeback here. So I went back for dinner and I am even more impressed!!!! Chicken and Rice was amazing!!! I added a bit to much of the sauce that come with it and my mouth was on fire!!!! Lucky for me I ordered a Thai Tea, this cooled my mouth down for the majority of the plate. Near the end of the plate this started to lose its effectiveness. Once I finished my plate and with mouth on fire I ordered the Thai sticky rice topped with ice cream..... This is were I had my world changed FOREVER!!!!! You must try this!!!! It's like heaven!!!! I should start by saying that this review was prompted by one very bad interpretation of one of my favorite dishes. Yum Woon Sen (glass noodle salad) is normally the reason I crave Thai food. It's fresh, varied, and overall a very unique dish to eat. The glass noodle dish I got at Thai Fresh lacked all of those characteristics. Ground meat which is typical in the dish, is not available as an option. Instead I got shrimp which albeit tasty, were one of two add-ins. The other add-in was really soggy Roma tomato's that lacked all flavor. Even the noodles were a little different than what I'm used to. Not the perfectly soft and supple noodles that round out the dish. To top it off, I found a long hair in my pile of noodles. Disappointed in this dish. I give two stars because I have enjoyed meals in the past. I think this restaurant has gone down hill over the years. It's a shame since Thai food is not easy to find in South Austin. I'll just make the trip to North or East Austin next time I want Thai food. read more

I first went to Thai Fresh back when they opened almost a decade ago and for years it was one of my favorite spots. However, the restaurant keeps changing it's format and keeps changing prices...I never know what to expect when I walk in and at this point I might just stop trying. I don't understand if it's a coffee shop or a full service restaurant or both...and I'm not sure they know themselves! The experience is awkward and surprising every time. It's always been pretty expensive, but I was able to rationalize it because they are farm-to-table and just really high quality. With the most recent price raise it's tipped over into being objectively overpriced. The reason I've kept coming back all these years is the good food and pleasant ambiance. The food is typically on point, super fresh and tasty. The coffee is good and the gluten free baked goods are amazing. The building is adorable with plenty of natural sunlight and a super cute patio. If Thai Fresh stepped up their service game and cut out the coffee shop element then I would consider returning for real fine dining experience. It they lowered their prices I would consider returning for a casual lunch or coffee date. I really hope this restaurant figures it out, because they have so much going for them!! read more

Have been looking for the Thai place to go all the time in Austin for a while. This place is near my house and decided to give it a try. Tonight we placed an order to go here. To start ...they didnt answer their phone. So we walked over. Not only was a bowl of soup $9 -- after waiting for 20 minutes and asking the woman at the counter for a status update, she let us know that they are backed up so it would take another 20 minutes. When I politely asked why she didn't say that they were backed up in the first place ...nothing. Just "sorry I don't know what to tell you" -- we are talking soup. This place is seriously good. I've tried the pad Thai, coconut vermicelli and green curry and l-o-v-e-d every bite. Personally I go chicken or no meat at all on my dishes. Once, my Favor driver ordered pork for me; it was ground and very greasy. The coconut vermicelli is unlike anything I've tried anywhere else and I dream of it on the reg. And, you get sooooo much of it. Easily multiple meals, or enough to share. The parking lot is small, but street parking is available nearby. The biggest detractor to this place is it is EXPENSIVE.
