EDIT: LOL, as predicted, the happy hour is no longer 7 days a week. I've probably eat at this place 75+ times between studying for board exams, working from home, and celebrating with friends and family over the last five years. They are great for my milk allergy with their yummy ice cream and general awareness. I have a love for the Tom Kha Gai coconut chicken soup here, the red curry veg, and most of the noodle dishes. This is my favorite tom kha and pad Thai in the city, hands down, and I've eaten a lot of tom kha and pad Thai. We also got a special order chocolate cake with mocha icing for my graduation, and my parents said it was one of the best chocolate cakes they've ever had. Their happy hour, which is 7 days a week, is very generously food heavy (which is nice for non-drinkers.) The basil fresca and happy hour Thai tea are the most reasonable things on the menu. That being said, the general concept kinda keeps getting worse as time goes on - prices are higher, staff is less friendly with fewer old timers. The switch from QR ordering to full service was not proceeded by enough staff or training, so I found it just takes me longer to get my food or I have to leave my stuff at a table and order at the counter. I've tried occasionally to just sit down, particularly when I am outside with my dog, but I've only had someone come take my order once in the 5+ times I've done that since the switch. Less homey or comfortable overall. The 15% fair wage fee is a fairer characterization of what tips function as in the US. If this place tipped based purely on service, I think I would probably tip less than 15%. Once someone brought me my food, and I noticed I hadn't been given utensils and asked for some. "You can get up and find them on that shelf over there," they said. This was already pretty brusque for a full service place, but when I went to that shelf, there weren't even any available utensils. Definitely not worth a typically sized tip. It does seem in the last month there is a lot of effort going in to training new staff - hopefully this will change things. The togo containers are too small for the portions, so the noodles end up all squished together and require a sort of elaborate reheating to get a typical texture back. It was a low blow to go from a 3-6 happy hour to a 3-5 happy hour, as a lot of people don't even get off work until 5PM. The food is also not consistent, which is disappointing when you pay so much for it. Expect to pay about $25 a dish here for a basic noodle or curry, no extras. Of note, it costs two dollars to add a tiny amount of veggie to a noodle or curry dish. Yikes. I've contemplated sending things back before when they come out strange, but when it's something like soup, it's not super easy to remake. Also, the staff currently doesn't check in often enough to have this sort of conversation. Most of the time it's good, but sometimes it's just sad. I don't want to pay $25 for a sad curry. Yet, I still go back, sometimes multiple times a week, because I love the soup (most of the time) and my brain has been primed to associate Thai Fresh with focusing. My family is in food service; I know running a restaurant is hard. I'm glad they survived the pandemic because they are by far the most allergy conscious Thai place in austin. Loving Thai Fresh kind of feels like having a really talented and beautiful sibling who is always making a mess of their life or being difficult at large family gatherings. And yes, I tell everyone else that Thai fresh is great because in many ways, it is! It just sucks to watch people mess up a good thing, whatever the reason. So, eat here! You'll probably like it. Just don't fall in love with what it is now because it will likely change, for better or worse. read more

Whenever I have my hair appointment, I try to stop next door at Thai Fresh to take advantage of their amazing happy hour. They have half off all of their small plates and have some amazing choices to choose from. This time I placed a to-go order at the counter. Service during happy hour was friendly and efficient, even with a steady crowd. The vibe is relaxed and casual, which makes it a good place to sit down and unwind with a few small plates and drinks. I ordered the shiitake battered mushrooms, Thai beef jerky, and tom kha soup. The mushrooms are battered with 512 IPA beer with Thai chilies, & soy sauce, were crispy and well-seasoned, with a satisfying crunch and earthy flavor that made them a standout appetizer. They are served with Thai basil dressing that is a flavor explosion and I like to dip everything in it. The Thai beef jerky, sirloin marinated with soy sauce & served with sticky rice was flavorful and chewy in a good way, with a nice balance of sweet and savory seasoning that made it easy to snack on. The tom kha soup with coconut milk, lemongrass, galangal, cilantro, kaffir lime leaves, white button mushrooms, & choice of protein was the highlight for me, rich, creamy, and comforting with that classic coconut and lemongrass profile. It had a nice depth of flavor without being too heavy, and the balance of tangy and savory made it really enjoyable. I selected tofu for my protein and ended up ordering 2 cups! Overall, Thai Fresh happy hour is a great choice if you want good Thai flavors in a low-key setting. Had an amazing meal here post half marathon run! The service was friendly and attentive. I ordered the vegetarian egg rolls and the jungle noodles, and wow the flavors were on point. The spice level in the noodles was fire in the best way possible - bold, flavorful, and exactly what I hoped for after 13.1 miles. This is quaint, casual restaurant tuck away in a quiet neighborhood near south Lamar. Restaurant parking is limited but you can find plenty street parking near by. We tried pad sea ew, pineapple fried rice and Thai basil fresca. Pad sea ew is seasoned just right combined with perfect chew on flat noodle. I went to Thai Fresh with my friend, who had just finished with a hair appointment nearby. She suggested meeting at 5:00pm, which worked out well, because it was just in time for Happy Hour. There is a choice of seating: in the dining room for full service or in tbe other room to order at the counter. We chose the latter, making ordering quick and easy. Their Happy Hour menu includes items under "First Bites," or appetizers. I was impressed that a lot of the items were gluten free, perfect for my diet. And they were all reasonably priced. The portions were extremely small for the price and just to add one vegetable was two extra dollars for such little portion, both meals, including the vegetarian one tasted very meaty as though they cooked it in a pan with beef. I came on a Monday afternoon so it wasn't super busy but the parking lot was still full. On the bright side, there was street parking near by. The restaurant itself was really nice. Half of it was the sit down meal side while the other half was a cafe. My friends and I got a couple items to share and my favorite items were the pandan latte, jungle noodles, and the sirloin steak salad. Thai Fresh is lovely, and I don't know why it took us so long to come here! Big mistake not coming sooner! After getting the rundown from the staff, we decided to order from the table on our phones. Super easy! The difficult part was choosing what to eat, because there were so many wonderful options for me amidst my gluten allergy! We started with Golden Chicken, which I've never been able to have before, but it was a nice start! I love turmeric, so nicely fried chicken in a turmeric batter made me quite happy right from the start! I wouldn't say it was a knockout, but it is solid rare I can have fried battered chicken, so I had to try it! We next ordered the Pulled Pork sandwich on a gluten free bun and the jungle noodles. Let's all take a moment for the memory of that pulled pork. Oh my goodness. So flavorful, perfect amount of meat and pickled cabbage, the bun held up nicely, and that meat was so beautifully tender. The depth of flavor was wonderful, and I can see why it is popular! Those jungle noodles were delicious. I made the rookie mistake of thinking a Serrano was a bell pepper, so I LEARNED early on, but I love have subtle the heat was in this dish. Plenty of proteins, not greasy or sitting in oil, and so much fresh vegetables. The dish wasn't super salty either - it was nicely balanced and full of flavor. I could eat this all day. We were too full and just couldn't manage eating dessert which I regret, because they have a TON of gluten free desserts and ice cream. Even their Cookie Monster ice cream was gluten free! Tres leches too! We have regrets, but we ultimately said it means we need to go back! Restaurant is a nice size, not cramped, some outdoor seating, and also some comfy lounge seating which is nice for those who want to chill for a bit. We went on the night when all proceeds were donated to those impacted by the flood, and we thanked them for their donations and support for the TX Hill Country. We meet our adult kids occasionally for dinner in Austin and they get to choose a place since they live there. It has to be in south Austin though so we don't have to drive across Austin. This restaurant was a great choice. The food was delicious and the drinks were also pretty good --especially the Tiger Punch. I had stir-fry with chicken and rice and really liked it. My husband and daughter had drunken noodles and said they were really good. My son had a pork sandwich and raved that it was really tasty. We would go back here in a minute. I wanted to love this restaurant, but my experience was disappointing. I called ahead to ask if their chicken soup could be made without seed oils for health reasons. I was told the garlic is fried in oil and could not be modified -- even leaving the garlic out entirely wasn't an option. We wanted the ice cream but we were also hungry so we decided to try this place again as we didn't want to have to make another stop. We ended up ordering a lot of food. The best thing we ordered this time around was the Thai fried rice. The drunken noodles were flavorless and dry to the point that the noodles would stick together and essentially formed a "patty". The chicken wings were ok but some were over cooked and had a jerky texture. The chicken plate and jerky were good but dipping sauce wasn't it. Goddamn delicious folks. First time heading to Thai Fresh, and I'm very happy to have finally given it a go. Went for dinner around 6:30pm on a Wednesday. Plenty of space, and the interior was very inviting. This is a primarily service free restaurant, where you can order by QR or at the counter. We used the QRs at the table, and within 10-15 minutes our food arrived. Pad Thai (sub avocado oil for soybean), rice balls, and coconut soup were this evening's selections. Everything was bursting with flavor, and the complexity (salty/sweet/sour/umami) was really amazing. The only minor complaints would have been: 1.) Pad Thai had a bit less chicken than I'd have hoped. And 2.) Prices were a bit high. But hey, you pay for quality. The service was sooooooooo slow. We waited 40 minutes for our food, and the restaurant wasn't even busy. There were many empty tables. This is a self-serve type of restaurant where you order on your phone with the QR code at the table, and you get utensils and water yourself. I am not sure why the food still takes so long, as you would think this process makes the service more efficient. The price was also crazy high. The pad thai with chicken (the cheapest meat option) was $18, which is much higher than most pad thai prices in Austin. The portion wasn't particularly large. I did like my pad thai though. It was a nice flavour with good chicken. My friend got the pad see ew, and it was drowning in sauce. The taste of the sauce was overpowering. It soaked through the takeout container. Great little location with flavorful food. They do have a small parking lot. One side of the building is a cafe FILLED with homemade vegan ice cream and gluten-free treats. We didn't try any but they look really yummy and I'm excited to try it out next time. The other side of the building is the restaurant. You can order food using a QR code at the table or by walking over to the cafe to place your order. Noise levels are pretty low, or at least they were when we visited on a late Sunday afternoon. We were seated immediately at a table in a sunny spot. I wanted to order the pork belly salad, but the menu said it was out of stock. We selected our appetizer (sesame shrimp fritters) and drinks (basil lime agua fresca, Thai tea) and I asked the server why the pork belly salad was out of stock. She said that it was because they were out of cucumbers, which is the primary ingredient in the salad. I went back to my table and ordered the pork belly pad Thai instead, while he ordered the coconut vermicelli. Shortly thereafter, our appetizer came out, which included......... a side of cucumbers. So...... are we out of cucumbers or nah? Because these are absolutely cucumbers here. My confusion is deep. I was pretty disappointed because I wanted to try the salad, but I ate what I got. It was all very good. The fritters were crispy. The dipping sauce had a little kick but wasn't too spicy. The pad Thai with pork belly and cracklins had lots of flavor. The scrambled egg in it was almost meaty. Everything tasted super fresh and had a nice char. There is no dessert menu, but if you desire a sweet treat the cafe is just a few feet to the left. My main issue is the fact that the kitchen and FOH don't seem to be communicating well. Our entrees were well over $20 each for portion sizes roughly the same as you can get at other Thai places BUT the tip options were 3/5/7% rather than the 15/20/25% that has become so ubiquitous. I'd much rather pay a little bit more up front than wonder whether or not my server is gonna be able to make rent this month.
