I ordered Thai Fresh because I heard great reviews from my neighbors. I was disappointed to find out that when I ordered via Favor they were very rude to the runner that was delivering my meal. They were against any adjustments to my order (no cilantro) Luckily they accepted the no peanuts requirement. The food I received overall was okay - protein (chicken and beef) was kind of fatty. I appreciate that fact the keep everything in separate containers though. Bottom line: be kind to who you get orders from! No matter what third party. The food is AMAZING! So many gluten free options and the Vegan ice cream was awesome. If it were just the food, I'd give it 5 stars. Buttttt... I agree with everyone else on here about the service. If you're eating at the place there is only one or two servers that provide good service. The rest could care less. The built in tip yields absolutely no incentive for them to do well. I really loved this place. I hope they succeed. I think it's time for a new model for restaurants in this country and I'm glad someone is trying. On to the food, green curry chicken was excellent and delicious. Slow cooked pork roast was really nice until we poured the sauce over it, then it was AMAZING! Thom Ka was virtually perfect. Coconut vermicelli least favored entree but still quite good. Service was excellent. I will say, I think it may be time to step up the decor just a little. I have been to Thai Fresh before and was content with their food. Today I ordered some pick up items and noticed things have changed a bit since I had been last. For one, they voice that they have raised their prices to include tip. I have mixed feelings about this. But I dig supporting local so I was still down to order. I had an allergy/ cold at the time and was looking for some good Chicken Tom Kha soup. I ordered it over the phone despite their push to order online. Took awhile, but not an issue. Also decided to order a side kale salad to try something new. Guy called me back about 10 mins later to explain they were out of chicken and asked to recommend a replacement between beef and pork. Went with beef. When I got there I went to the coffee bar side to pick up and all seemed well. My total for two tiny side items, $9.75, included an 8 oz cup of soup and 8 oz kale side salad. That salad was hot. I don't think it was supposed to be served hot. It was whack. However my "beef" with this visit is really aimed at the soup. This was the worse Coconut based "Tom Kha" soup I've ever had. Overly salty, no spice and the beef was ground up. Not a fan. I will give this place another try in the distant future trying main dishes but would highly NOT RECOMMEND the coconut soup... Ever. Also tacking on a higher cost to eliminate tip for to go items is a little ludacris. Hope not all their dishes, or my future experiences are not like this. The prices used to be more normal, typically around $10-12 per meal. Nowadays they've raised the prices on the menu to cover a fixed tip for the server which makes sense, but tonight I ordered to go and they prices were outrageously high- for TAKE OUT. I'm not dining in or getting service, please have a different rate. Also I should add the food is not as good as it used to be. I received a $50 Thai Fresh gift card less than 24 hours prior and waiter says there's only $25 on the card. I explain that I just received it, pointed out that $50 was written on the card by Thai Fresh, and he had zero desire to investigate nor make things right. His response, "Sorry. Accidents happen!" Great attentive staff and delicious and healthy food! We were greeted by 3 different staff members when we asked on on a Friday eve and were able to sit immediately. I ordered the veggie stir-fry and it was perfect - not too much oil, brown rice, and veggies that were just crispy enough. The vegan desserts (esp the Thai coffee ice cream) are to die for! They business chooses to take on the burden of higher payroll taxes to provide their staff a living wage with benefits so they have my respect. read more

Incredible service and food. We spent a long time there enjoying a delicious brunch and drinking coffee afterwards while studying. The restaurant is large and perfect for all group sizes. It's perfect for catching up with friends and enjoying a meal or group/individual studying. There are plenty of outlets and coffee options. I would highly recommend this restaurant and if you go around brunch time you have to try their chicken and waffles. When Thai Fresh is good, they are very VERY good. The problem is, they're inconsistent. Tonight, for example, the Kale Stir Fry was almost inedible due to putting way too much garlic in. Two weeks ago, on the other hand, the same dish was incredibly good. There have been other occasions as well when a given dish tastes much different on different nights. It seems like Thai Fresh needs to make sure all the chefs are on the same page and are using consistent amounts of the ingredients. As I said, when they're good, they're excellent. I LOVE THIS PLACE. I come here multiple times a week just for their coconut milk lattes. They use REAL coconut milk (canned with no preservatives - just coconut & water) not the carton with all of the additives, sugars and ingredients you can't pronounce. I have been trying coconut milk lattes all over Austin and no one compares to Thai Fresh. Also, their coconut milk ice creams... SOOOO GOOD (and vegan). The baked goods are all awesome too. This is a gluten-free treat paradise. You can find awesome vegan treats too. The style of the service is super laid back and chill. More of a place to come stay for awhile rather than be in & out super quick. They do an awesome job of sourcing locally and if you ask they will cook with olive oil & fish sauce instead of canola oil & soy sauce (for you Paleo people out there). I love when Cathy, Mya and/or David are working (sorry if I missed spelled any names). They are so kind and always chat with me. Best way to start a day! Went over this place from a meeting at the Omni Hotel. Strong hipster atmosphere with the entitled mentality that comes with it. Ordered the Green Curry Chicken Bowl with chinese broccoli and mushrooms. What I got was one scoopful of rice and tiny pieces of chicken and vegetables thay would not even weigh 50 grams minus the sauce . Way too small portions and over priced. Wait staff forgot one of our group's entre until we were almost finished with our meals. Others ordered the Chicken and Rice. Chicken was chewy and dry. Not worth the price for maybe $1.50 worth of food that was charged $17. Should have waited for Onion Creek Restaurant to open after 5pm instead of going there. read more

It takes a genuine distaste (pun intended) for me to write a review but this one was much deserved. I live a few blocks away from Thai Fresh and used to enjoy having this be my neighborhood spot to frequent and enjoy some good food or sip on some coffee and have an occasional meeting but sadly, this is no longer the case. Despite deciding to raise their entire menu prices by 20% on their already inflated prices, you would at least expect the staff and service to be decent but it's not, it's horrible. The staff has an unwarranted sense of entitlement now and the last time I went (and will ever go) I sat down to enjoy a cup of coffee and have a quick one-on-one meeting and one of the servers told me, "ummm...well...all you want is coffee? you're not ordering food?? Well can you sit at the coffee bar instead?" Mind you, this was not a peak hour at the restaurant and yes, ma'am, I only would like to order coffee today. Ugh. Anyway. Sad to cross this place off my list but one of my biggest pet peeves is entering an establishment, being a paying customer, and get treated with such disrespect by the staff. read more

The restaurant is located inside a small neighborhood on Mary St. Very hipster looking with the restaurant combined with a cafe side and the dine in restaurant side. Our waitress was friendly but nothing over the top, again, it's a hipster vibe in there. We ordered the Masaman Curry and Drunken Noodles and both were pretty spicy, which we like, but nothing special where the flavor profile was different from other Thai places. We headed to the cafe side and just to have someone acknowledge us standing there waiting to be asked for service was a chore. Three guys were just standing behind the counter having a conversation right in front of us while we stood there waiting to order our ice cream. read more

There's a lot of things coconut can do. It can act as a bra sometimes. It can hydrate a human, when saline IV is not available. It can have meat that you can eat. Coconut meat, it's yummy. It can transform a too-hot-for-Monica-to-handle spicy dish into some kind of wonderful. It can be a topping on melty chocolate on frozen banana, or melty anything really. It can make ice cream vegan. And it is good. Coconut, you're doing it right. Thai Fresh, your dairy and gluten full Coconut Vermicelli was so yummy I convinced my dairy-and-gluten-intolerant friend's mouth to sample some of this. They liked it. Your coconut and banana + Thai basil combo knocked us out. You have beer and kombucha on tap. You have tons of possibly vegan baked goods. You have dairy-based ice cream and coffee, some imported food goods and all the curry, stir-fry and noodles I could want. I'm dancing back to you. read more

Perhaps the trick to Thai Fresh is dining in, or using it as a Thai grocery. Because it fails miserably at take-out. The place is not without merit. The owners' hearts are in the right places, and the flavors of the food were OK. I can see that the spot just opened, so maybe they are still tinkering with things. However, $15 for take-out, including an upcharge for rice (!), for a small amount of red curry and a small soup is crazy. Forget that my curry contained no chicken. Zero. None. Just some pieces of squash swimming in liquid. Forget that Bruce offered to give me more food when I called to complain (forget, I say, because the piece of chicken he gave me was still pink at the bone). It's funny how a place can transform: if not necessarily before your very (and very hungry) eyes, but if your only lingering memory of a space, say, is its former incarnation as a clothing boutique, suffice it to say that an open mind to new beginnings is in order. And new beginnings is, more or less, what they have in mind at Thai Fresh (which would be a cool rapper name, but isn't, to my knowledge). The fare here as you might expect, fresh Thai pad dishes, curries, organic bean selections, complemented by a variety of local sodas, organic waters and brews. The back wall is brimming with other green-friendly goods, and the owners seem intent on running the place with a very personal touch. And while in this opinion they've still got a little growing (pun intended, I suppose) to do (my pad thai was good and worth another try, but that was about the extent of it), I know that whether or not they fully get there won't be for lack of individual passion on behalf of the business. Worst food/service I've ever experienced. My masseuse recommended that I try it and being a fan of Thai food, I was stoked about finding a new Thai restaurant. I called in a to-go order around 8pm for beef pad thai, yellow curry with pork, tom kha gai soup, and white rice. When I asked for the total, the counter girl (I think she said her name was Deneen) hung up on me. Great way to start my experience with Thai Fresh. I get to Thrice and wait in line to get my order and decide to also order 2 coconut macaroons and a slice of flourless chocolate cake upon checkout. Deneen then rings me up, hands me the Thai food and tells me to have a good night - without the desserts. Now I've worked in restaurants before and at the end of the night at a busy restaurant, you're pretty pooped. I forgave her. Ate a macaroon on the way home and it was delicious (hence the 1 star.) the Thai dishes on the other hand are a complete DISASTER (see my uploaded photos.) The pad Thai had no beef in it, the curry was just scraps of pork fat and mangled veggies, the rice was burnt (obviously scraped from the bottom of the pot) and the tom kha had gone bad. How does an establishment serve something like that?? So I collected myself and called the restaurant. Deneen answered and I asked politely if I could speak to the manager on duty. Deneen all of a sudden sounds incredibly uncomfortable and starts telling me that she's gonna check to see who's there but they may have left for the night. Understandable. Then she doesn't even check but instead asks me if there was something she could do to help. I told her about the food being meatless, burned, and basically inedible. This was her reaction "Theres no MEAT in your FOOD?I don't know I don't know!! I don't have a solution!!! Can you just call back tomorrow??" It was at that point when I decided to write this review. I don't know if I caught them on a bad night or what but this experience pretty much ruined my night/dinner date with my bf after my only day off during my 60 hour workweek with Apple. Walking into Thai Fresh my roomie and I were greeted by a myriad of aromas rising up from the kitchen where we could see someone working diligently. To my right I see none other than DJ Mel and Prince Klassen tearin' up some bidness before likely goin' out to wreck shop at da club. To the left there is a deli counter displaying large bowls filled with soups, curries and noodle dishes. Luckily they were out of Pad Thai. I say luckily because I'm the type of girl who will stick to the safe and familiar for the most part, but this outage forced me to try something new. And I'm glad I did. Ordering in is definitely a good deal. You get three items and rice for $8.50, what a steal! When ordering to go, you order by the pound or by the size of the container. I'd say for time's sake, just order by the container, the weighing process takes a bit longer. I settled on the Coconut soup with chicken and mushrooms, red curry with beef and squash, and spicy green beans with tofu. The ride home was a difficult one because the smells eeking out from my to-go bag were intoxicating. When my roomie and I got home, he was the first to dig into that soup. I watched his face closely: shock, confusion, delight, uncertainty, and finally glee. All that from just one bite! I had to check it out. Holy effin' Tom Ka!!! Unforgivable - the owner, Bruce Barnes, was rude to me for asking for chopsticks. First of all, why would a Thai restaurant not have chopsticks*, and secondly, How dare you act indignantly rude towards me for making the mistake of simply asking for chopsticks. I have encountered bad service before, but no minimum wage lackie has ever been so crass as to talk to me with there back turned on me while walking away, and that's how Bruce Barns delivered his "No, I don't have chopsticks, my silverware is over there" - with a rude and indignant voice tone, and while walking away and pointing across the room. You would have thought I had insulted him, his business, and the food. I mean seriously, did this man fail to graduate kindergarten. That's not just bad service, it's just plain RUDE. *Now to be fair, I have since learned that Thais in Thailand don't often use chopsticks themselves. However I am a white boy in Texas. The only thing you must do is be nice, and everything else can be forgiven. If you want to force a traditional Thai experience on your customers, just be nice about it, and it can be cool, but not if your delivery is rude, then it's, well, rude. I wasn't really expecting much after that, so it was no surprise that despite dropping twenty bucks on one meal, I had to fetch my own water, silverware, and go to the kitchen counter to request more rice. I also bussed my own table at the end of my meal. This all combined to leave me wondering where exactly my four dollar tip was going to end up. What's bizarre is that I had eaten here once before, and upon request was given chopsticks by a very friendly employee who also brought me water and more rice. Seems the owner could learn allot from her. Regardless, rude business owners will never get my money. In this case it's kinda sad though. I really wanted to like this place. I'm allergic to MSG, so most Asian food is out of the question for me. I also avoid eating meat unless it is from "happy animals", meaning no factory farmed meats. You can imagine my excitement when I learned there was a Thai place that cooked from scratch and used local meats and veggies. Like many other reviewers have noted, this place tries to be too many things at once: grocery, restaurant, tea cafe, ice cream shop, cooking class but it doesn't seem to succeed well at any one thing. My advice is to focus on one thing, do it well and drop the rest. I ate the Pad Thai and Drunken noodles both of which were extremely disappointing. Reheated food in the microwave, not that I think it would have been much better if it was made fresh! The flavor was nothing special and the chicken pad Thai barely had any evidence of chicken. Their claim of all organic, local, natural ingredients although it may be true, seems more of a gimmick. And to top it all off, it was relatively expensive! Well, I finally get to take Thai Fresh off my bookmarks. It was good. Not AWEsome, but good. It's a cute place, and unpretentious. I went with a friend, to dine in. We each ordered two items and shared them both. On the table: Spicy Green Beans and Tofu Yellow Curry, with Asian eggplant Pad Thai Lemongrass soup All of the items were very flavorful and spicy. Spicy in a good way, not in a burn your face off type of way. And with each bite, I could taste various levels of flavors.The varieties of spices and flavors were very distinct and wonderful. I suppose if I did the take-out route, I'd heat it up in the microwave, too. And I would have heated it up more than the luke-warm temperature some of it ended up being. read more

Last night on the way home from happy hour, I stopped in here to pick up some dinner. They were about to close so I rushed myself and didn't really look around much. Food to go is served by the pound, just like the cases at WFM or CM. I picked the red pork curry and the green beans with tofu. She asked if I wanted rice, but I had a bag of frozen brown rice at home so I decided I would just use that instead. The containers are dishwasher safe, and returnable for a .25 credit! That's super cool. Plus I can reuse them for stuff I cook as well. The store has a selection of some Asian groceries which is really nice. It means that I won't always have to go up north to the Asian markets when I need something specific. There's produce and refrigerated items as well as pantry items. You can also eat in at Thai Fresh ordering a few items for different prices. They have a few tables to sit at if you want to eat in. The food I got was excellent. The green beans and tofu were perfectly spicy. Lately I've found places seem to skimp on the spice and tell you it's really hot when it's not at all. These were perfect and the texture of the tofu was amazing. I'd eat this dish all the time for sure. The red curry was really good as well, although I wish it'd been a little spicier. There was a type of white squash in it that I've never had before and want to eat all the time now. In fact, I'm calling them today to find out what it was because it rocked. I'd have eaten it with just that and no pork. And really, you read my reviews, you know my love for the swine, so you know that's a really big statement. I'm so glad that this place is in my hood. You know how bad I wanted to give Thai Fresh 5 stars? REALLY bad, REALLY REALLY bad... but I just couldn't because of the less than 5-star service that I have received when trying to place an order via phone or have stopped in the restaurant. The food here is terrific, always fresh and made to order. You can tell that what you are eating was made with good quality ingredients which makes a huge difference compared to other Thai joints that uses the cheapest veggies they can find. My favorite dish is the appetizer sampler (the chicken wings & sticky rice are insanely good) and the pad see ew. Whether they're out of chicken (which happens almost ever other time) or not, the meats are always cooked well and food is packed w/ flavor. There are plenty of desert options from baked goods to ice creams, all made in house. They've even got some vegan options if you're into that. What really gets me is the service - I almost deducted TWO stars for the bad service I constantly have here which sucks. A place with such good food has people working with such crappy attitudes. I've had someone roll their eyes at me when I asked a question at the counter and the last time I tried to place an order via phone, they answered (which rarely happens since the phone just rings & rings & rings) and told me they were too busy to take to-go orders. I asked "well what if I come in & order, could I get it to go?" and the person on the other end said "I guess, but we are busy, bye" and hung up. With those bad customer service experiences, my love for Thai Fresh has dwindled but today, I'd still recommend it as one of the best Thai restaurants in South Austin. Thai Fresh fits right into Austin. It serves up ethnic cooking with a trendy spin. The meats are local, the containers are reusable, and the food is fresh. After eating here, you may go out to a local Thai joint and have some really killer Thai food at an affordable price... but just know that the food there will never be as sustainable as at Thai Fresh. Any problems? Price. You know that Meat n' Three combo you get at a Southern joint? Well, here they serve a great Rice n' Thrice combo (rice+3 dishes). Let's play the "The Price is Right." Item: Rice+Red curry pork+Green curry chicken+Massaman curry chicken. $8? $9? Try $15! Ouch... I know. Despite the steep cost, the food here is awesome. Being made with local meats and ingredients, the dishes are really bright but still delightfully greasy and heavy. You cannot go wrong with any dish here, but nothing specifically stood out. It tasted like solid Thai food... but then again, I am no Thai eatin' connoisseur. Some of my favorites: Drunken chicken noodles (pad kee mow) with nice wide rice noodles. Bone-in chicken in Massaman curry made with LOCAL CHICKEN! TF has a great concept going, and I would definitely make this a top choice for an Austin-style Asian eatery.
