I really don't get this place. I embrace the whole locally sourced and farmed foods; but that's where Thai Fresh looses its fizz. Lets start with the chef's case. You are attempting to maintain a temperature 38 degrees) at least according to the health department. Putting steaming hot dishes directly off the fire doesn't exactly make the grade especially with such a small case. The food proved another disappointment. The pad thai, drunken noodles, mussamin curry, red curry, yellow curry, and pineapple shrimp were just MEH. All the curries were greasy, the noodles were overcooked, and the shrimp which looked the most appealing in the case was served cold. $25 for a meal that I would never order again. In fact if I did it all over again; you see me at Madam Mam's you know where they prepare dishes to order. Ambiance was lacking that critical BEEP BEEP BEEP; sorry I had to finish my thought after the tower of microwaves finished cooking someones meal. Never mind on the whole ambiance thing. Water vessels that sat on the counter since after lunch. Not a pair of chopsticks in sight, I considered walking out the door and molesting some bamboo near the fence to get some sticks. Frankly when you have to explain the concept as soon as you walk in the door; its probably not a great idea. Some ideas for places look really good on paper; but this place has some identity issues. Some ideas I'm just throwing out here: Get rid of the tables and just sell take out. That way its the purchasers choice if they reheat it in the microwave. Planned my entire Friday night on being in charge of picking up Thai food on the way to my boyfriends, who is putting his 11-year-old dog to sleep tomorrow. We were gonna have a quiet night in with our favorite food. They wouldn't even take my order and I said it would take me 30 minutes to even drive there and I would even wait 45 minutes to pick it up. I love love love the food at this place (most of the time) it is sooo amazing!! The fried rice with beef and the Pad Thai with pork belly is my favorites. As of lately though things are kind of hit and miss. Sometimes the food is great and sometimes not, sometimes the service is stellar and sometimes the staff has a really shitty attitude. My most frustrating thing recently is the 4.00 per plate upcharge for an adult ordering off the kids menu, even with medical conditions. I have a card that says I can eat the amount of a child, and have provided this to more than one server, however they will not honor it and provide child's pricing, and charge me an extra 4.00. I think this is crazy. What if I didn't have a card that said that, but rather I'm someone with a smaller appetite. It's not like you're charging for the size of a person in your establishment you are charging for the amount of food you provide to a customer. I've now resulted in ordering to go to avoid these fees, which hurts them in the long run as I am less likely to purchase anything additional like an app (which they do have some amazing ones) or dessert to go. I wish this place was more consistent as it's the only place I enjoy eating Thai food at. Thai Fresh has changed its business model and is now a sit-down diner with full service waitstaff and NO TIPPING. (Compare this with the old model of ordering at the counter, food delivered to you directly, and you bussing your own table when you're finished.) Little notes on the tables say that they want to level the pay gap between front- and back-of house, and in eliminating tipping they are raising the prices of the food. It's not much of a jump (a few dollars for some of the more popular dishes, it seems). It looks like you can still order at the counter for dessert items such as the vegan ice cream or various gluten-free cakes and cookies, however. The feel of the restaurant has changed, definitely: only one entrance door, a host seats you, and your waiter brings a capped glass bottle of water to your table. It feels like a European experience. I wondered how this would work out, since Thai Fresh hasn't really been what I'd call SWIFT with service. In days past, I enjoyed the freedom of eating half of my giant portions, boxing my leftovers, and leaving at my leisure. And it seems as though I was justified in wondering, because tonight I sat waiting for my waiter to reappear for 10 minutes. People were courteous and the food was delicious, but waiting was a drag. I was one of the only people in the restaurant, so I can't say that crowds were the reason for the slowness. Still, I really like Thai Fresh and enjoy the food, so I'll continue to eat there. This is a great place to eat if you're vegan and love authentic Thai food. All veg dishes can be made vegan. I especially loved the Pad Thai and the Red Curry. But BUYER BEWARE -- the reason I did not give it 5 stars - they add a service charge to the cost of the food, but then the wait-staff did not alert us, so we paid a tip on top of the tip! I visited Thai Fresh for the first time last night to celebrate a friend's birthday. As soon as I walked in I noticed the quirky decor and the cozy atmosphere. Since I had never tried curry before I was most excited to try that and I went with the red curry with tempeh, sweet potato and summer squash with a side of brown rice. I love spicy food but this was a whole new level of spicy! The coconut made it sweet at first and then the spices kicked in. I absolutely loved it even though it did make break a bit of a sweat. For meat lovers, my boyfriend got the panang curry with chicken and loved it! That says a lot too because he hates trying new things. And did you know they no longer charge gratuity? It felt a little weird not leaving a tip but that is why the prices for the dishes are a little higher than other places (mine was about $15). The bill was not split for us so we had to do it ourselves, which is the only thing I wish would've been different. The experience was overall great- they even stored the birthday cake in the fridge for us until it was dessert time. I've driven/walked/biked by several times. You'll notice not many people are here on a weekend despite the expansive space. A friend lauded their chicken and waffles. We've banned him from making restaurant suggestions for the next month. The chicken was clearly reheated. I'm not sure when it was cooked but almost certainly not the same day. The waffle was nothing special either. I ordered the pork omelette. It's served like a Chinese egg foo young. The egg was overcooked for my liking but the flavors were fine. They serve the omelette with a side of rice which seems like a strange after thought. Because of the rice and dryness of the omelette, the dish could really have used a sauce. One of the best things about Austin is the fresh food, and quality ingredients. Thai Fresh had the aura of both of these things - the ambiance felt fresh and you can tell that some care went into every dish. I had the chicken pad thai, an always safe option. I am always using this as a benchmark, and the dish here was great. It was a good portion, and the flavors were amazing. I don't like it too fishy, and this was just excellent. I would recommend this place, just don't get the pork belly, as my friend was somewhat disappointed with that sandwich. But all-in-all, take a look at this place if you are nearby! read more

There are things I love about Thai Fresh (the food) and things I get uber frustrated with (the waitstaff is, for the most part, unfriendly and lost in la-la land I think). But I find myself coming back two or three times a week despite this so something mus be right here (the food). Their green curry will blow your head off it is so hot but so good that you will eat every bite. I prefer their red curry which is spicy but not at all too spicy. Mixed bag: Thai Fresh was once a favorite of mine. I loved the food and that there have always been so many tasty gluten free offerings; that remains true. But the coldness of the service (there was little) this visit created a high level of frustration for me. This was my first trip back since the dining room re-opened. My friend's food was served before I could complete my order. She was almost done with her food when mine arrived. The green curry was good, maybe not on par with my last 10 visits but good. I wish the broccoli had not been over cooked. My basil soda was flat and unsweetened. I remembered it as fizzy, fresh and lightly sweet. The cracklings were fabulous as always! Thai Fresh has been a fair wage restaurant since it opened. The sign on the table where you get the QR code for the menu says so, yet when you check out it prompts you to tip before you get your food. You have to manually enter a no tip option. We had a few questions about the menu. Getting them answered required tracking someone down. During our lunch I interacted with three people. One could hardly be bothered to answer, the second was slightly more accommodating and the third was everything you would want in a person working in a customer facing environment; friendly, helpful and solution oriented. She could see I was frustrated and ultimately gave me my basil drink at no charge even though I tried to pay her. I appreciated the gesture. I think the lesson here is that I need to lower my expectations and understand that TF has changed the type of dining experience it provides. If you want a no server contact experience you will be delighted with the changes at TF. If you want a physical menu, and/or have questions go to the bar and order there. If you have multiple people ordering at your table and you want the food to come out at once you will need to hit the order button at the same time or order at the counter. read more

It is comparable to going to prepared food section of Whole Foods (a thai version) and asking for the food to be plated and warmed for lunch. The green curry is my favorite dish by far, followed by the Drunken noodles, and Pad See Ew. Yes to the happy tummy factor. Eating in with kids has been the best experience for us here. There are toys and they have room to play with other children inside. We have had their food catered for parties and it has been a big hit both times. I just came here for a single scoop cone of ice cream and it was really tasty. It was hard to choose between some of the flavors, all of which are vegan and I believe coconut milk based. Some of the flavors I sampled were quite icy so I didn't get them, but I chose the spirulina which actually had a great flavor, more like vanilla. But the winner was the super crispy gluten-free spirulina cone. It stayed crunchy the whole time and was a perfect accompaniment to the ice cream, with a stronger vanilla flavor with the hint of spirulina in there, too. I LOVE THAI FRESH. Ok, here is what I love: 1. The food tastes great 2. I don't get to eat much Asian food since I am gluten free but Thai Fresh has so many gluten free options. 3. I hope this isn't an example of what happens to a restaurant when it "takes tipping off the table." The service is consistently non-existent, with hipster/out of it servers. They drop water and a carafe when they first greet you so that you can fill your own water, and have a condiment bar you can go to yourself to retrieve what you need throughout your meal. And for this tipping is included? Didn't hear from our server after he took our order until he brought the bill. Then a quick goodnight. They don't try because they know their tip is included. And it's a generous tip at that. The food, which is the only reason I am rating it 2 instead of 1 star, is pretty good for my taste. My friend though could not stand the unusually, and excessively spiced pad Thai. Nor the dark meat they used for the chicken instead of white meat. I haven't returned here in years, and that was really a mistake., It has been some time since the days of choosing something from the deli case (it would be microwaved for you and put in a to-go box.).Now, it's a regular full-scale restaurant, and honestly it's some of the best Thai food I've had in Austin so far. Lived here 11 years, and I've never been able to approximate the delicious Thai tastes we found in Los Angeles. My two favorite things were the Green curry and the pad see ewe. The vegan ice cream over sticky rice was also very satisfying. Our server was Aneeka (Pippi Longstocking's best friend.). A gem. She knew the menu thoroughly, and was able to answer every question intelligently. Do you know rare that is these days? I really appreciate it when a server knows the food they serve. When a small mistake was made with the timing of my order, she comped my dessert without me having to complain or ask. That is how it should be! I don't complain on yelp about it. I will now be coming here regularly. Yay!!! Update: next time I came was less delicious; the tempeh tasted off and overall dish was too much oil.
