[UPDATED review and rating] After a very careful consideration and comparison to other places in Austin, I took off one more star. The food did not worth listed menu prices at all (see full review below). Do yourself a favor and just drive somewhere else, if you can, for much better options and fuller plates at the exact same price. ---------- Went to this place for the first time. It's a very casual spot on campus. The prices are about the same as in many other places in Austin but, but in my opinion a bit high for what we got. The seating inside is very annoying. I'm a community table hater (unless it is a social event or a big party dining together, in these situations it is fun actually). But in this setting, noting irritates me more than having to seat with strangers elbow to elbow while trying to enjoy some food and have a conversation. If you dislike this kind of sitting situation, you better off seating outside if you're committed to going to this spot. I wanted to try UTEA Special, but the only red meat option they had available that day was brisket. I'm not sure if they were running out of brisket as well or were just stingy, but the amount of meat was pretty sad and on top of that the slices were really tiny, you'd have to work extra to fish them out. Very small amount of sprouts as well. You basically would fill in with noodles. They had many other options as well, which makes me think pho is probably not the priority. I have been to UTea Pho many times and each time they offer large portions and seem to be consistent in their food. I like their spring rolls and would often get the chicken pho, I did have a time where I ordered just chicken and broth (no noodles) and was still charged the same. While I understand this is what I ordered and a customization I thought they may make some accommodation as the soup is typically all noodles. I have also just ordered broth as a to-go order as I love pho broth and that was pretty easy, I just did that online through their website. read more

casual vietnamese spot with a few dishes from other cuisines, including pad thai. the seating is very casual and meant to accommodate college students living in west campus. i had the pad thai with tofu and it was delicious. definitely spicer than the one at pho thaison but has a more authentic flavor. the vermicelli was yummy as well, the pork was well seasoned and delicious. servers are mainly college students, unfortunately the one that served us was not as friendly and didn't check up on us. read more

I just had a laughably bad experience with the waiter at UTea Pho. Never have I had to deal with such a dismissive, inattentive, and rude person. We come in to eat lunch and he just gestured to us where to sit. He finally comes and sets down the menus, doesn't say a word. When he came back to take our order and I asked if we could have water, he signed and rolled his eyes saying that there wasn't any water, then walked away. How are you going to be operating a restaurant on a 90 degree Texas day and have no water? I understand this is not his fault but he did not offer any other options and was very rude. When our food started coming out, he just threw the plates down and walked off. I noticed that he was giving all other diners same attitude, so at least we weren't the only ones! I have never felt so uncomfortable in a restaurant, I felt like I was inconveniencing the waiter by coming in. I did not get his name unfortunately, but he was working at 3 PM on 3/15. Something must be done about him, he is killing the tip pool and will drive away business with his crappy attitude. Thankfully, the food was sooooooooo good and I would risk interacting with such an insufferable person again to eat it in the future, or I'll just stick to take out. read more

I think for a Viet place in West Campus, UTea Pho is not bad, but it's not high quality food. It's affordable and quick with a very convenient location right in the heart of West Campus. The seating is limited but they are quite free outside of dinner hours. We got a spot by the windows. Service is really friendly! And they give a free bottle of water. I've gotten the egg noodles recently, and I like how they give a lot of protein, but the shrimp has been tough every time. The banh mi is all right as well. I think the cream puffs are a hit or miss, but it's been a while since I've had one. They used to be good! I'll be back here because of the location most likely. read more

UTea Pho is a convenient spot for food in West Campus, but I find it consistently mid. I've had their pho, Singapore noodle, pad thai, and wok on fire noodle. I would say they are all fine. I really enjoy their cream puff. I remember when they used to charge for water without telling us that they did, but now the first bottle is free at least. I organized a profit share here with my student organization and was successful. My last visit, the service was a big issue. We waited an extremely long time for each order, especially the cream puff and my friend's Vietnamese coffee. About 20 minutes after he ordered the coffee with boba, he was informed that they had run out of boba. They also mixed up our checks, and we were only a group of three. Stopped by for lunch the other day and glad we did! Service is quick and the restaurant itself is casual and clean. We ordered the spring rolls, which were very generous servings. The sauce was a little more peanut heavy than I'm used to but it was very good nonetheless! I ordered pho, which was also a generous portion that i managed to finish completely. However, I was waiting for 2 hours for my food and all my friends had finished eating by then but my food had not come out. I have tried the stir fry, egg rolls, and fried rice and can say they are definitely worth getting. The only upsetting part about dine in is the seating arrangement. There isn't much space so you are sat directly next to another party (arm to arm). I could overhear a lot of conversations and it gets pretty hard to speak in there. I unexpectedly found myself on UT campus a few of months ago and came across UTea Pho. I'm so glad I did! Since then, I've been back a several times and have had a chance to try several of their times, and I have to say that it never disappoints. My go-tos are the vermicelli bowls (lemongrass beef is delicious), the spring rolls (shrimp or pork), and of course the pho. Service has consistently been friendly and quick. The restaurant is clearly a favorite among students, as it is always busy and packed. The crowd is mellow and although it is a calm place even when it is a full day. Reservations are available if you want to save yourself a potential wait although we have yet to make one and have one had to wait a few minutes at most. Check it out! The food here is so average, so underwhelming. I've been 5+ times and have never been impressed. Half the time, the things I want to order is "not available/out of stock"? How is that even possible? Pho with meatballs: - noodles were undercooked - meatballs tasted frozen/not fresh and no flavor - broth was just alright Basil fried rice: - doused in sambal oelek (chili paste) which was disgusting and a shame to eat... didn't even want to take home the leftovers... I'm Vietnamese and have been to 50+ pho restaurants in my life. Sadly, this is one of the 10 worst I've been to. It's pretty hard to mess up pho, and even harder to mess up fried rice. Wouldn't recommend this place if you have a car and can get yourself to a legit pho place 10 minutes down the road. OH I FORGOT TO MENTION that they only offer bottled water and they charge you for it without telling you ahead of time! They don't even offer tap which I think is illegal? My go to pho place in west campus! Every time I have a craving for Asian food this is my one stop shop. They have so much variety on their menu, fried rice, spring rolls, noodles, the list goes on and on. I normally get the rare steak pho, very flavorful broth and the meat is so tender. Tastes especially satisfying on a chilly day. I would also highly recommend the vermicelli. A great portion size and the noodle to everything else proportion is just right. Recently I have been really into the banh mi sandwiches. The pate goes perfectly with the protein and peppers, the bread could be better but overall still great, especially for less than $5, what more could I ask for. Loud ambiance with bad acoustics in the dining, but it's fine for a restaurant catered to college students. Pho broth was pretty authentic compared to a lot of other pho restaurants in Austin. UTea Pho, oh how I will miss this place! My go-to spot in college because it was so convenient and has quite a few good food choices outside of pho as well. Their takeout pho during quarantine has never disappointed me. First off, the pho. This is some quality pho, especially for being in Austin and in West Campus. I think there were some changes in the broth, because I was not impressed when it first opened, so I didn't order from them very often until quarantine. When I got their takeout, I was really impressed; it had been a while since I had decent pho in Austin. After that, I kept going back and loved it almost every time(once it was a bit salty, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt). The lemongrass beef with rice is also a smart choice. The meat is smoky and savory with the hint of citrus, and the pickled veggies are sweet and balanced with the meal. If I weren't a big pho eater, I would definitely order this regularly! Lastly, I gotta give props for their food, cheap banh mi. For $5-6 you get a well filled sandwich with pretty good flavors. I would say it's a bit dry if anything because of how packed mine was, but honestly very yummy and still value for the price. I stopped by this new Vietnamese spot since I heard they had some of the best pho in town, not to mention homemade cream puffs. I'm not from Austin, but many UT students know this spot as a former bakery and coffee shop. The new owner still makes homemade cream puffs and has added casual Vietnamese cuisine along with teas, smoothies, slushies and other drinks. Parking is pretty straight forward, like many other retail in Austin with parking garages, you can either park in front on the street or park in the garage which is free with in store validation. I tried the brisket and rare beef pho with a brown butter pecan cream puff. The pho comes with a small plate of vegetables. The actual soup came out pretty quickly. I put both jalapeños in the pho, but they weren't spicy. The soup was pretty good. The cream puff was presented beautifully on a plate and tasted awesome. According to the owner, the puffs are baked every two hours. They are similar in size to round homemade ice cream sandwiches at Smoosh and other food trucks/storefronts in the Houston area.
