Decided to try this place out because of the late hours. I was pleasantly surprised! Cute decor, food was tasty and full of flavor. I would have liked to see bigger portions and friendlier service. I have been in Austin for many years and I have lunch here sporadically it's delicious and not as pricey as some as the cookie cutter franchises. Has a more mom pop feel and the staff is almost always friendly. I just had surgery 4 days ago. I am back at work but can't eat anything other than liquids. You come to hate jello and broth really fast... tonight I walked in at almost midnight and they were closing shop. The staff had their purses, turning the lights off. My heart broke because I needed to "eat". And I couldn't do more jello. An older lady put her things down came up to me and said "are you hungry? What would you like?" I said do you have any soup left? She said "how about coconut chicken lemongrass" I just said yes yes. She ran to the back and the cashier very irritated but quietly charged me then grabbed her things. The lady was out a few minutes later with a HUGE container of soup and some rice packed up. I almost cried. And it was so so so delicious. She was so kind. So I am grateful to Thai Kitchen and that lady for being nice to a haggard hospital worker who just had surgery. read more

This is the best all-around Thai Restaurant in Austin from a food perspective. Other places do certain dishes well and other things not so well. This one hits high marks on all areas: Curries, Noodles and Soups. They all rock. So, while the restaurant is small, this may be the best place to go with a crowd of friends and minimize the chances of someone having a bad night. The Gatee Tom Yum, is known elsewhere as Tom Kha. Perfect aroma, taste and texture. Panang, Green and Massaman Curries. Flavorful, aromatic. They don't quite achieve the Nirvana or generosity of the curries at Madam Mam's but they're darn solid. Pad Thai, hits all the right flavor notes. Some logistics: The dining room is small, and parking is scarce, but I've never actually had to wait to get it. You do, quite often, wait to get your food, though. Actually, more often than not, I just call ahead for take out. I know I should have listened to fellow yelpers warning me about the TVs - I wasn't expecting anything fancy but I really don't like eating in a restaurant with huge TVs - (especially when they are tuned into CNN). I'm only guessing they changed cooks based on the change in how my 2-3 standard dishes are seasoned from a year ago versus now. Constructive criticism + Cons: Siracha noodles shouldn't have ketchup/tomato sauce in it (when I first ordered it this didn't happen), and now the Pad Kee Mao is way too sweet. I keep getting the Pad Kee Mao because I keep expecting it to be the exact dish it used to be a year ago: perfection. It's still good and authentic... I just feel like the new cook needs to half the sugar. Same with the Pad Thai. Pros: The Thai Noodle Soup and other noodle soups are excellent. Also, the service is always excellent. Thai Kitchen has some high accolades under its belt. With a top-tier Thai chef, a closeness to campus that is just "weird" enough to keep it on the Austin-ite radar, and pretty solid grub to round out the experience, Thai Kitchen is (and has been) around to stay. The humility is so intrinsic. Going on this, I really didn't find Thai Kitchen to be anything outrageous, aside from its very homey character. Yeah, the interior is no-frills, the staff is caring, and it just screams from-scratch. But, it just leaves something to be desired. This certainly has to do with some of the Thai fare that I ate--I gotta order something different next time. Because of its high accessibility and location within close proximity to other Thai joints, I figured it really should be a notch above the rest. And it is not exactly that... but it is a smidgen more expensive. Additionally, they forgot to put utensils and napkins into my to-go order of soup and noodles. That was pretty ridiculous. It goes without saying that there is a definite desire for Thai cuisine in this odd town of Austin, Texas. Would I say that Thai Kitchen offers up some of the best around? I am certainly no expert in this field, but I gotta point you somewhere else. As to where? You decide; I just didn't find Thai Kitchen to rock my world. I love Thai Kitchen but eater beware. First the menu is huge which is awesome but may make it hard for someone not experienced with Thai food. Also the menu sports some dishes that definitely will challenge even the most adventurous eaters. All that aside, they have some amazing dishes if you love spicy food. I rated the Kitchen five stars because the dish I order is amazing but I cannot speak for nor have I tried many of their other dishes. I order the Crying Now which is chicken in green curry with vegetables and I love it. My friend loves the Tiger Cry which is an assortment of meat and vegetables in a green curry. Went here today for lunch because I could not get parking at another place closer to campus. Service was quick, but I had to retrieve my own napkin and flatware. Started with the lemongrass coconut milk soup with chicken. Bland. I like more sharpness from the lemongrass, and the chicken was just okay - a touch dry, not much flavor. Main was #36, I think: stir-fried pork in flat noodles, supposed to be hotHotHOT. It was edible, but not much flavor popping out of the noodle swamp, and I only had one moment of heat from the peppers. The pork was unnoticeable. This dish reminded me of an amateurish home attempt at making Thai - no subtlety of flavors, and the whole dish seemed... gloppy. They are open late, and the food is inexpensive, plus they have a touch more parking than other nearby Thai restaurants. Go here in a pinch for cheap eats, but don't make it your first choice. read more

So before I get into it I have to say this used to be one of my favorite Thai places. I live very close by and often order out and pick up on my way home. However, this last time I went the food took an exceptionally long time. When it came my Pad See Ew was DRENCHED in pepper on the top. I used to work in a restaurant and will rarely send something back so I held my tongue, mixed the pepper in, and tried to eat it. My fiance was telling me he would eat it if I didn't like it, fine. We took home our left overs (we also ordered a Pad Thai which was fine) and left. I heated the leftovers up the next day and it wasn't bad. However, once I took a bite I saw a piece of SQUID in my meal. I don't eat sea food, I am allergic to a ton, and was so disgusted. I order my pad see ew with chicken, not a side of squid.... So although I will rarely, rarely write a bad review, I really felt it necessary for me to vent about this one. I have been to Thai Kitchen about 25 or more times and this last time I was put off from it. I doubt I will go back there if only for a veggie egg roll. read more

I went into this restaurant for dinner on Friday. It is very hard to find a parking spot in other restaurants in school area, so I find this restaurant on the yelp. When I got in, it is pretty dark inside, and smelly like the motel room. Because I had to catch a movie, I thought I could stay here for a quick dinner. But when I see the dirty spot on the black tablecloth, I just stood up and walked out of it. I will not recommend to my friend. This is OK for some dishes. The Tom Ka Gai is fine with some added salt and chile. I would say this is the best Thai choice in the central/downtown area. Uhm, why is it that the Thai restaurants in Austin aren't cute? I've worked at an authentic thai restaurant for 3 years. This was a poor excuse for thai food. Obviously made extremely spicy to compensate for a complete lack of flavor. "Steamed dumplings" were more like soggy fried. Tiger cry was extremely spicy but with no flavor. Cashew pork was just as bland. I wouldn't be surprised if the kitchen consisted mostly of bagged frozen food and microwavable meals. Bleh. read more

Great late night Thai food joint. My husband and I eat here at least once a week, not just because it's close, and one of the only places open when I get off work at 10-11pm, but their food is pretty good. Staying true to most Thai restaurants, they offer an extensive menu of every version of every typical Thai dish you could want. Some dishes are better than others, but you can't go wrong with their Tofu Curry, or any noodle dish they offer. Everything they serve always comes out fresh, hot and quick. Their staff is always friendly, and the owner(?) an older Thai gentleman, who is usually doing paperwork in a nearby booth around the time we usually eat dinner, always takes time to say Hello, and loves to make funny comments about something or another. As for the atmosphere, I happen to enjoy the brightly colored walls, the "Visit Thailand" posters under each tabletop, and the walls adorned with pictures of Thai Royalty. If you're looking for something classier, I suggest going to a more Americanized Thai Restaurant, like Thai Passion downtown (which is also very good!). For a small, late night, BYOB, neighborhood Thai restaurant, you couldn't ask for more. read more

I dream about their chicken soup with coconut milk, literally. Every other Thai place in town has a fish flavor to their chicken soup, but Thai Kitchen provides the best flavor in town. So good, I think about it in my sleep. The Pad Thai is also BOMB at Thai Kitchen - not too dry or greasy and with just the right amount of flavor. I like to spice my soup up to the point of ear itching intensity with the powdered red peper at the table. Be sure to ask for extra cilantro, limes and chopped onions to complete the experience. There is one waiter I dread getting, though, he rolls his eyes when you ask for something special and barely responds to you at all when you talk to him. Sorry, Thai Kitchen, but no. My experience started with snagging the last possible spot in the parking lot, and walking into a place where the kitchen and back half looked dirty. And that's where we were seated. I ordered the cream cheese rangoons for an appetizer, and literally one came out with over a teaspoon of oil just sitting in one of the pockets. I poured it out on the plate it was so much. The appetizer itself, beyond that, was unremarkable with no spices, green onions, crab, etc. in the cheese. The pad sea ew I ordered *smelled bad*. I ate it anyway because the person I was with loves this place. It also had a grit to it. You know, like when sand gets in your food? It also tasted like no pad sea ew I've had in the dozens of restaurants I've consumed it in. My favorite Pad Thai in town! There's always lots of peanuts, which makes me very happy. Great flavor, and it's convenient to pick up an order on the way home if you work downtown or go to UT. Their red curry is also quite tasty, and it's a good value for your money! The only reason I take off a star is because of an order mix up recently. Thai Kitchen is gooood. And by that, I mean, my Thai friend dragged me ALL OVER Austin to find the best, most authentic Thai in Austin. He says that this is, and so I believe him. Also, I had an ex-boyfriend who had an obsession with Thai food who loved this place. The pad thai is super yummy (not the best I've ever had, but one of the best I've had in the stateside), and I let my Thai friend order every time, so (maybe I'm just lucky) our food is always delicious. Their chicken dumpling thingies are really good as well -- I always got a plate of that for appetizers. Love Thai Kitchen ten times more of that hellhole they call Thai food over at Madam Mam's. We tried to go to another Thai restaurant but they were closed in between lunch and dinner so we came to Thai Kitchen. As we parked and walked towards the restaurant, I said "wow, it doesn't seem that clean" We walk into the restaurant and we are seated to our table right away. We ordered their Papaya salad, Pad Thai and some vegetable/meat combination plate. We were given the choice of soup or salad and wanting to try something new I ordered their coconut soup which was really good (maybe because I never tried it elsewhere). I mostly ate the papaya salad because I didn't like the other plates. The color of the pad Thai was really light, the noodle was a bit chewy and tasted a bit sweet. As I was eating the vegetable/meat plate, I was worried that I would be sick the next day because the meat in this plate all tasted funky! Maybe being from LA where there's a lot of good places to eat made me a bit harsh and picky but out of all the restaurants that I've been to in Austin this had to be the worst. read more

I know this place gets more business then they can handle because they're on campus, but popularity does not equal quality. The service is nice but that's basically where it ends. The food is awful, I had a chicken fried rice with chicken that came straight out of the can including all the cartilage i could eat and the vegetables were 3 days old at best, the rice was a bit mushy. My girlfriend had pad thai that tasted sweet, with bits and pieces of what i think was egg sprinkled on pretty tasteless noodles. I wouldn't recommend the eggdrop soup unless you like the texture of snot. I don't think i'll be coming back to this joint. read more

It is the BEST most addicting soup ever. I used to sell stuff at Buffalo Exchange across the street just to get this soup back in the day. I have been going to Thai Kitchen for over 15 years, and it is my go-to for fast, inexpensive comfort food. They have the best, most flavorful Tom Ka (coconut/lemongrass soup) in town, and I've tried a LOT of them! Comes in a big fiery pot with lots of fresh veggies and tofu (or chicken/beef if that's your thing), and a big pile of rice. I love the Phat Sen Me (I think that's what it's called) on the Noodle menu, it is a tangy and satisfying dish with vermicelli-thin rice noodles, bean sprouts, tofu, and green onion with a tomato and thai basil based sauce and a lime to squeeze on top. I usually ask for added broccoli, which makes a complete meal for me! its SO GOOOOOOOD! Oh, and they always provide Sriracha sauce, which is obviously very important;) Oh, and if you like spicy, I mean REALLY hot as hell, this place can make your wildest dreams come true! They are very clear about which dishes are spicy and which aren't, and let me tell you, if you order spicy it is going to melt your face off and make you fart fire. It's awesome. The only reason I am giving them 4 out of 5 stars, is the last couple times I've been Ive had the same waitress, who I think is new, and she was a little slow, brought our main dishes before our appetizers and soups, and forgot to get spoons and bowls for the soup. I'm conflicted on how to rate this place. The first time I came here, it was maybe six years ago, before I became an undergrad. After moving here about four years ago, I've been coming a few times a year, only ordering to-go. Overall, the food isn't that great, but they're open late and there's always parking when I go. The only thing I like is their Thai fried rice with Indian curry. Although it's not as spicy as it used to be years ago. Everything else has been just ok or bad. The Pad Thai changes every time I've ordered it. Years ago, it was extremely spicy, but has died down over the years. Come for the food nothing else. Service can be sketch so I usually order to go. The owner is pretty scary woman who will judge you. Heard a story about her not letting someone order a dish because she tells them they can't handle the heat. Then why is it on the menu? Once, a friend and I came famished. We ordered about 4 different apps AND then our entrees. The owner just happened to be waiting on us. She repeatedly asked if we really wanted all that food. Yes, we did. And no, we aren't ashamed to take a doggie bag if we needed it [of course we did] but we came close to finishing everything. As long as you steer clear of the old lady with a bun you should be fine. 15D Indian fried rice. Most ordered thing on the menu for good reason. For that dish alone, TK was added to my address book on my cell. It's not pretty, but late hours and spicy food don't need to be fancied up for the campus crowd. read more
