Me and the wife came here on our first date almost 20 years ago, and returned this weekend. Great service although I had to wait a bit longer for my mixed drink to come down from the bar. Tiger rolls were smaller than I remember, so I have to agree with the comments about small portions for what you pay (it was $19 for four tiny little guys). They were as tasty as ever, though. The Pad Thai noodles were different from what I'm used to, almost spaghetti noodles. They knew we were going to a play and like I said although it wasn't immediate, they took care of us and we had a great meal down by the creek. Call for reservations if you want to sit outside, or wait until the plays start at 8 and the restaurants empty out. read more

Our squid appetizer was zesty and fun. The special Lamb dish with ginger, coriander and lime was superb! Pad Thai Shrimp intriguing with flavor and different than I've ever previously had before and the Saki selection good. The chef considerately gave us a small dish with two types of peppers for heat as my partner has a lower tolerance for fiery tastes than I and we ordered only 2 stars.. I have come to Thai Pepper several times and the food has been up and down in taste. Today, we ordered their Pad Thai with chicken and their Evil Beef curry. Pad Thai was complete deception. It's like just dry, tasteless noodles that I have ever tried. Chicken, sprouts and egg were nowhere! Not even peanuts! So not Thai that it should be illegal to serve this! All this place is is bullshit. Makes you wait waaaay to long for your food just because you ordered appetizers. The seating and the idea of it is nice though. Don't count on the waiters to do anything good though since your drinks are always empty. I'm here right now and it's been two hours and still have not receives my food. We have had dinner here for the last 7 or 8 years when we are in Ashland and have always enjoyed it. Unfortunately this time was not up to par at all. They have closed the downstairs area for remodeling so the upstairs is pretty small and noisy. The menu is similar, but we were left wondering if they had a different chef because the food was awful. Coconut soup had a creamy broth with a couple of pieces of chicken, no vegetables and an overly limey taste even though there appeared to be very little kaffir lime in it. Pad Thai was almost all noodles with a brown, vinegar tasting sauce. The grilled vegetables with sauce was also lot more brown sauce than vegetables. I felt sick for hours after eating about 1/4 of the pad Thai and ended up missing the play we had tickets for that night. Sorry to say we will not be eating here any more or recommending it. There are many better choices in Ashland. read more

I accidentally left my wallet at home but all of my cards, drivers license, passport, and everything is copied into an app on my iPhone. My wife and I walked in, I explained the situation and showed them the app and the photo of the credit cards. No problem! You can pay with that! BUT .... a couple of hours later with a $100 meal to pay for they decided that, no, we couldn't pay with that. They called the owner. Nope. Can't be trusted. OK. My fault, I'm the one who forgot my wallet. So, after 10 or so years of being a patron at the Thai Pepper I left my beautifully graying 61 year old wife as collateral and drive home to get my wallet. They ignored her while I was gone..... didn't even fill her water glass or apologize. I came back and paid. They said they were awfully sorry. I said "mistakes happen.... It's really all about how they are handled". But no one got it. read more

Probably the worst Thai food I have had in my life. Really disappointed I got swayed to go here by some review my husband read. Ugh! I've never wished I could have my hour and $ back more than after this experience. We started by being seated outside on the patio. It was very crowded, and there were flies everywhere. The restaurant was packed, so servers were very busy. We finally got our two cocktails, which were terrific. The only saving grace of the meal. I had a ginger martini, and my husband had a basil mojito. For dinner we had green curry chicken (mush!), beef over spinach, and a shrimp dish. Everything tasted Americanized, and looking back I never saw anyone that looked remotely Asian. The worst part was the meal was very expensive. Each dish was approximately $19, which would be fine for good food, but for this food it was a huge waste of $. Go for a drink, and then RUN! read more

Terrible. I had the same experience with the chicken satay that another reviewer here described. The strategy here seems to be to hide the blackened chicken pieces under their gooey peanut sauce (glorified liquid PB). As soon as I scraped some of this sticky disguise away, I saw that the chicken was not charbroiled, but charred. It tasted like ashes. When I pointed this out to the waitress, she found this "interesting." I assume that's their way of saying "We don't care." Well, it shows. My main course, which bore the ludicrous moniker 'The Evil Jungle,' was supposed to be a beef curry but had more in common with the goulash served in a military chow hall--essentially, supermarket grade stew meat vaguely 'Thai-ified' with coconut and some crushed peanuts. The only evil thing about it was the amount of oil dripping from the "bed of spinach" on which this mess was served. Their 'lemon seafood soup' lacked every basic ingredient this dish would contain in a real Thai restaurant: there was no lemongrass, no kaffir lime leaves, no galangal. If you have ever had properly prepared Thai food and enjoyed it, Thai Pepper will thoroughly disappoint you. Too bad Yelp doesn't offer the choice to rate a place "Good for: Nothing." read more

Been here twice now and don't understand the mediocre reviews. Love everything we have eaten. Chicken satay w peanut sauce was excellent. Husband had the garlic pork and it was delish. Came here for lunch but was closed... However we came back for dinner and was fantastic. the Yellow County Curry was delicious with a nice coconut flavor. Tiger Cries was also delicious; great medium rare cooked meat. Pad Thai with Chicken was also very nice. The only problem was that I was allergic to nuts and they had some on the Pad Thai. OK. Just left this place with the taste of charcoal in my mouth. They burnt the chicken satay. I had to scrape off the black part. I was so hungry from the road trip that I ate it anyway. Afterwords I noticed the taste of burnt coal was still lingering in my mouth. It still is as I type this in my hotel room. I told the waitress. She said it was satay and satay char broiled. I kept coming back to this restaurant because on the times when they get it right, it is sublime. But those times are becoming rare. Prices are high, but the major problem is inconsistency in spicing. I like spicy food. I have ordered 3 stars hot (which a teenage waitress will always try to talk me out of) and sometimes it is inedibly hot and other times quite nice. I have also ordered the same dishes 2 stars hot, and sometimes it comes quite nice and other times so bland it could not even be called tangy. And if you dare to ask for something like 2 1/2 stars the waitress will explain that the kitchen refuses to take half star orders, as if it was somehow precise and besides who care what the customer wants as long as the kitchen staff are happy. Save your time and money - plenty of better restaurants in Ashland. read more

First time eating @ this place and the worst dinner I had along with the 5 friends who were with me. Took like 30 minutes for our oder to come. The fried rice was very salty that when we told our server she said to us if we would like us to take it out in our order or bring us a new one. Well as our server Amanda H. and she happened to be also the manager in charge that night. She should have apologized and told us instead that she will bring us a new plate of fried rice. She certainly has an attitude problem, very defensive and rude. The pad thai noodles were thin rice noodles and not the thick flat rice noodles usually use for pad thai. It was blend with about 3 pcs of shrimp and no other garnish. For $21 a plate tasted like something you buy in a food truck. The drunken noodles was also blend and dry. When she brought the new order of fried rice. It had jalapenos which I'm allergic to spicy as we told her no jalapenos. Good thing I saw it in the fried rice before I put em in my mouth, or I will be ending up in the hospital. We told her about it and she told us she forgot about the jalapenos when she re order the fried rice. As she was trying to explain to us how their food are asian fusion. Just bcuz few of my friends with me are asians includingme. She had to say to us that the owner of the restaurant is also asian. The appetizers were ok but nothing fusion about the taste. Amanda seem angry when she had to say to us that she will just take off the fried rice from our bill. First it was salty then the second had jalapenos. We weren't trying to get a freebie for complaining just trying to correct how they should served their food and treat their customers. By tasting the food before serving it to their customers. And also by not forgetting certain details of the food we order and telling the chef no jalapenos. That would have sent me to the hospital if i have eaten a piece from the fried rice. I have eaten in a lot of thai restaurants wether it's a place like a hole in a wall or 5 star restaurants. That's why I know what is real thai food and thai fusion dish. And this was the first time I had this bad thai food and bad experience. This place dont even deserve any stars, bad food, bad service, over price and take forever for your order to come. Passing thru on way to California and the higher rated Thai restaurant was not open so we tried this one. Very cute restaurant and swanky bar and that's where anything good stops. This place is the absolute worst Thai food I've ever eaten and the server at the bar helping me with my take out order was VERY rude. There is no exaggeration when I say the Pad Thai tasted like over salted angel hair noodles cooked in cup o noodle broth (actually that probably would have tasted better). The noodles were definitely not rice there was no traditional sauce flavor (completely missing the tamarind, palm sugar, fish sauce, etc...) and the five of us couldn't finish them which is saying a lot, we eat most anything. I'm honestly not sure if I was even eating Pad Thai or if it was something they made up on the spot just to fill the order. The curries were meh...not terrible but watery and nothing to write home about. My guess is this place stays in business because it's a small town with few options. I'm hoping they get some good feedback and improve but based this on the people working there my guess is they don't care. read more

I visited Thai Pepper with my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter for my 75th birthday and dined downstairs next to the creek. Overall, the experience was very unsatisfactory. The sauce for the sweet and sour entry that I ordered was quite watery, and not just in consistency, but also in taste. It was as if water was added to the sauce to extend it. Much worse was the entry with mushrooms my daughter ordered. She quickly discovered that the mushrooms in the dish were dirty. When you consider that mushrooms are generally grown in a mixture of straw and horse manure, you understand why the remainder of the dish was uneaten. To her credit, the server had this entry removed from our check. I am a resident of Ashland, and at best many Ashland restaurants are inconsistent, perhaps due to the captive consumer base during the play season. This is amplified by the fact that many of the restaurants are owned by a small group of people who own multiple restaurants. read more

Not ethnic Thai food more of a fusion of Thai and American. Took about ten minutes after we sat down before the waitress came over. Ordered chicken satay, but came out burned. Have them take it back, but chef said that it was how it comes which I know for a fact is wrong because it is not suppose to be burned black. Ordered fried rice and pad thai and some other dish with ground meat. Pad thai was too salty and with too much soy sauce. Fried rice was a mix of sweet and salty. Ground meat dish was too salty as well. Food was over priced for what they provided. Lets just say this, the food was so disappointing that I didn't even take the left overs which was a lot. The food tastes very good, but it's not authentic Thai food, it's not flavorful enough. The Tiger Rolls are amazing. I can only give it a couple stars because the prices are astronomical for what it is. My boyfriend and I ordered an appetizer, two entrees, and 2 drinks (my coconut-something mixed drink was absolutely disgusting), and our bill came to $80, not including tip. After seeing the bill my stomach did not feel so strong! I'd only go here again if they cut their prices in half. Also, if I'm paying that much I certainly don't want to overhear the cooks talking very loudly about their personal lives! That was really inappropriate. read more

We were seated creekside and it was beautiful and cool on a hot day. We waited for quite sometime to meet our server, Christine. We were completely ready to order by the time she introduced herself. While the food was mediocre and the prices high, the service was worse than that. We felt ignored and when did show up, she wasn't even pleasant. Four of us returned to Thai Pepper as is our usual routine in visiting Ashland each Autumn. We have been attending plays in Ashland for 29 consecutive years. Thai Pepper was always a sure bet. Not this time. I was so disappointed. We ordered two items off the Daily Specials. The Alaska halibut cheeks were 5 small pieces, hardly a mouthful apiece, and rather tasteless. The lamb rack was quite good, but again, 2-3 bites per chop; only 4 chops were served. At about $25 each for these menu items it was very poor value. The old standby chicken curry with bamboo shoots and spinach was good and a good portion. We tried to order the tureen of soup for our party of four but they no longer serve the soup this way. $17 for a bowl of soup for one person? The restaurant was only 1/2 full (Sunday night) and the atmosphere a bit bleak. Perhaps the upstairs Satay Bar is the happening place now? I won't return. The waiter was pleasant and attentive. I wish he'd had a better product to bring to our table. read more

It wasn't awful, but everything we got was overcooked. Things we had were the crispy pork belly (burnt to a crisp) and then two or three kinds of satay from the satay bar upstairs.
