Wow -- I have a new favorite restaurant in Indy! (Greenwood? Indy? It's right on the county line!) We visited on Friday for dinner at around 6 PM, and while we didn't have to wait for a table, they were already packed. Thai Spice is clearly popular, and with good reason! The food was *fantastic* -- the best Thai food I've had anywhere in the midwest. (Really, some of the best I've had anywhere that wasn't Thai town in Los Angeles where I used to live.) We tried the Masaman curry and (on the recommendation of fellow Yelpers) the pad makur, which is an eggplant stir fry in a phenomenal sauce. I've never had this dish before so I don't have a frame of reference for comparison, but I absolutely loved it. The portions are also ENORMOUS. You'll pay around $10 - $12 per entree (slightly more for something like the pineapple fried rice, served IN A PINEAPPLE!) But even if you're very hungry when you arrive, you'll definitely leave with enough for lunch the next day. They're also very generous with the amount of rice they give you to accompany curries and stir fry dishes. The menu is also really vegetarian/vegan friendly! We ordered both dishes with tofu, and any dish can be made with tofu. (If you're very strict, you'd have to ask about hidden fish sauce -- I'm not very strict, so I didn't ask.) The little appetizer that they brought us -- tofu in a delightful sweet chili sauce -- was veggie-friendly, too. Ordering food "medium spicy" resulted in a decent amount of spice: not so much that it's actually hot, but flavorful. (After southern California, I've had to adjust my spice sensors for Indiana palettes -- if you have one of those palettes, you may want to err on the side of caution on order your dish mild.) The service was quick and efficient, and they appear to have a very brisk take-out business, as well. Finally, make sure to use the restroom before you go. It's very cool. I won't tell you why, but you'll thank me later! (Who am I kidding? You'll probably just click on "photos" on this page/app and look for pictures of the cool bathroom!) This was my first and last time here. Understandably, as it was Saturday, the wait to dine in took a while. What I couldn't explain away was the poor service and less than decent veggies and ingredients. Our server, whom I think was also a manager, never stopped walking as she took our order. I could ask no questions or ask for any recommendations. I got the Red Curry, which is my staple when visiting Thai restraints. All vary slightly, though with this curry, you could not manage your preferred spiciness at all. It was extremely hot. Even my partner who loves spice could not eat it. It was, indeed, inedible. Apart from the spice, if you're craving numb mouth and ruined insides, the vegetables must have been very old or reused. I think I ate a basil leaf which was older than I. My partner had the Stir fry eggplant dish- his stable, and didn't enjoy it because it was excessively oily and flavorless. The tofu left an almost bitter taste. The food less us in pain, hungry and dissatisfied. 10/10 would not recommend. read more

Thai Spice has been my go to, number one, favorite Thai restaurant since it opened. That's including all of the other places I've tried in the four states I've lived in since growing up in Greenwood. The quality of the food is superb and the portion sizes are massive (which is good, because I can't shovel the food into my face quick enough usually!) Their lunch appetizers are amazing as well. My go to meal is the Mee Ga Tee (a creamy coconut noodle dish) but I also really enjoy the Pineapple Fried Rice with Shrimp (served in a pineapple!) and the Pad Woon Sen. It makes it hard to choose sometimes. Besides the stellar food, Thai Spice really shines in their service. The people who work here are extremely friendly and back when I lived in Indy and would eat there more often they would remember me and my family. All of these reasons above make it so that I always add this to my list when I come back to visit! read more

Not the best experience here but also not terrible either. Called them on a Wednesday night around 5 PM and were told that it would be 45 to 60 minutes to get our dinner ready. We thought that was a long time but agreed, and ordered 3 entrees. We arrived around the hour mark just so we gave them enough time, but when we got there, there were probably a dozen other people waiting in front of us, and there were obviously not enough staff working there because no one was at the counter to help anyone. I get that given the current labor shortage, so did not take a star off for that. But we were still bummed that the meals still took an additional 20 minutes longer than they said to finally come out. When the meals came out, we were amazed at the portion size of the pad Thai especially. The flavor was good, but way too sweet for me. I like pad Thai to be a little more savory than sweet, but if you like sweet, you will love this. The portion size is huge, unfortunately most of the portion is noodles and not much meat. I am relatively new to Thai food, so when I try a new place, I usually go for something I have enjoyed elsewhere. Not only does it increase my chance for getting something I should like, but it gives me a point of reference to other Thai places I have dined. This was one of the best I have had! The restaurant is located on the north side of county line across from Greenwood Mall, so it can be a bit challenging to get in and out of the parking lot if you don't know exactly where you are going. Once there, I had no trouble finding parking out front. I went for a late lunch (around 1) and was greeted and seated immediately. I must say the service was prompt, courteous, and the food I ordered was brought out swiftly. I went with one of the lunch specials for under $8 (before tax, drink, & tip). I selected the Padd Seuw and it comes with a choice of chicken or vegetarian. I went with the chicken option. It also can be adjusted for heat (like most good places) and I went with the mild-medium. Not much heat, but enough to help the flavor. Excellent! The noodles were tender and full of flavor. The chicken was plentiful and thin sliced, but not too overcooked. Several veggies added some color to the plate as well as flavor and texture. I highly recommend it. The lunch special came with vegetarian styled lemon grass soup and spring roll. Upgrades to include meat options are an extra $1. These were brought out together right after placing my order. The soup had very little vegetable matter, but packed a lot more heat than I have had at other Thai places. It definitely affected the back of my throat and made my sinuses react. The flavor was good enough not to be lost in the heat. For people who like heat, this is probably not a big deal, but for my wife and some of our friends, I would need to caution them about the soup to avoid having a negative experience. The spring roll was served warm and the flavor was once again enjoyable. The outside was crisp and flaky. The inside was al dente and had just enough texture to give a good bite while being firm enough to hold together. The decor is nice featuring a number of paintings and mostly table/chairs on the side of the dining room I was seated in. Wow. Portion sizes were enormous. Food came out quickly and was hot and fresh. Servers were super kind. Food was delicious! Friend had the masaman curry. Girlfriend had pad kemau. I had pad Thai which was basically a giant mound of perfect. And by giant, I mean 3 times more food than any other Thai restaurant I've been to. This is a great place on the south side to go for yummy and consistent Thai food. The service is quick, the staff is attentive, and the food is good. Every time I go with someone else we get the appetizer combo (#10) with veggie spring rolls, chicken satay, and kiew tod (crab rangoons). Their spring rolls are so delicious and crunchy and their crab rangoons are they best ones I've found in a long time. My two go-tos for the main course are their Padd Thai (#60) with chicken and the Mee Ga Tee (#61) with chicken. The Padd Thai is flavorful but doesn't have much sauce, so I sometimes pour the peanut and/or chili sauce on it. It's relatively standard, yummy Padd Thai and a great place to start for people who don't know what to get. I was really wary to try the Mee Ga Tee because the menu says that there are no refunds or exchanges on this item specifically, but I'm so glad I did. It's a delicious and rich peanut sauce with chicken and you pour it over coconut rice noodles with some veggies. The sauce is on the sweeter side, but you can pick your spice level like with everything else so it can be as spicy (or not) as you want! I would definitely recommend Thai Spice when you're craving good Thai food!! read more

Can I take this place back to Phoenix please??? We started out with two appetizers- Sun dried beef and fried calamari. The beef was tender, flavorful, with a delicious dipping sauce. The calamari was cooked perfectly, with very large pieces that paired perfectly with the chili sauce. For dinner I had the seafood delight and my husband had the pineapple fried rice. Portions are enormous! The noodles in the seafood delight were doused in plenty of sauce, with a wide variety of vegetables, mussels were a little tough, but it didn't stop me from eating it. My husband's pineapple fried rice was presented in half a pineapple. He raves about the flavor of the dish and the shear quantity. If you don't like spice, go with mild. We had medium dishes and the spice was great for me and a little too much for my husband. My only complaint is service. If you're in a hurry this is not the place to go. There were very few people in the restaurant and it took 30min to put in our appetizer order and another 20+min to receive them. We had water refilled once in 2.5hrs that we were there, I never had my tea refilled. For a table of 6 we thought we would get a little more attention. I really love this take on thai. I have now been here for lunch and dinner. Im a huge fan of the soup that comes complimentary with the linch specials. Its a spicy lemongrass soup that is nice and light. You also get a spring roll which is delicious dipped in the soup. Also, the portions are all perfect for lunch. I never have leftovers. This is one of the most beautiful thai places i have been. Gorgeous ambience set with glass flowers for lamps. There is a gorgeous bar that is warm and inviting. The bathrooms have ornate handblown glass sinks. The sinks alone make this restaurant a sure stop! Their food is unique. I sense more lemongrass in items which i truly appreciate. There is no Thai like Thai Spice. All others try to emulate, but none succeed. There can only be one. I live downtown and will gladly drive to Greenwood for Thai Spice any time of the day. Any time. Always a special that is delicious and too much to eat in one sitting. I usually go for hot, not Thai hot, at least not yet, I'm working up to that. The ginger tea is the best I have ever had, spicy sweet and delicious. The bathroom sinks are something to behold. Even if you don't' have to go, just go. I don't understand how or why they are located in Greenwood. Makes me a bit jealous really. My wife and I have a new favorite Thai restaurant in Indy. This place is great and the prices are reasonable. Please note that in mid-June 2010 they are moving to a new location about 100 yards WEST of where they are now. We try something different whenever we go, but we have 2 things we always get. The Thai Iced Tea and the combination Thai Fried Rice. You can't go wrong with whatever you order here. Everything we ordered was full of flavor. They ask you what spice level you want and I usually tone it down to mild even though I love spice. Great place, only one hot waitress but they are all helpful. Medium is pretty hot (then there's hot and That hot). The Tom Yum is quite possibly the best I have ever had. The very friendly owner walks around and checks on the tables herself (the recipes are her own). The decor could use an update. This restaurant has probably been around for a long time. It is a free-standing building (how often do you see that nowadays for a small family-owned restaurant) in a sea of strip malls. When you walk inside it's like a timewarm back to the 80s. Thai Spice is one of those places that has so many excellent dishes that you could eat here for a month or two, try something different every day, and be assured that you'll always have an outstanding meal. I seek out Thai restaurants wherever I travel, and this is one of the best ones I've found. The people here care about your experience, and about great food. There's frequently a line here, so at peak times on a weekend expect a wait. Ordering food to go won't get you off the hook either, since there is frequently a long wait for that as well. The tables are tight together, which may make for some awkward moments if the place is packed. But just remember...there's a reason why all these people are waiting for their chance to eat here. I believe this is probably the best Thai food in the state. It is most definitely worth it. Thai Spice does excellent curries (although be warned, if it says extra hot, it is on the painful side), fantastic stir fries, soups, appetizers, and everything in between. My recommendations for appetizers are the nicely spicy, tender jerky style Sun Dried Beef, as well as the slightly sweet shrimp rangoons. For dinner, there are tons of options that are worthwhile. Literally everything I've tried here has been great. All of the curries are good, and most are on the milder side of spicy unless you request it hotter. I prefer the Massaman Curry. The Catfish Curry is a good choice for those who like great flavor with a LOT of heat. Don't order this if you think a jalapeno is hot. I like hot foods, but this dish definitely pushes my limits. You've been warned. The fried rice dish Kao Padd Bi Kra Prow is excellent, and a good alternative for someone who is used to only ordering Pad Thai. The Thai basil in the Kao Padd Bi Kra Prow really deepens the flavor and makes it a standout. It's one of the things that my husband and I order every time we go here. The Padd Makur is also a dish with great Thai basil flavor, and is one of my favorites. The main portion of the dish is Japanese eggplant in a thai basil sauce with vegetables. I usually choose the tofu rather than a meat option, since the tofu soaks up the flavor of the sauce nicely. For desert, the sticky rice with mango is a good choice, with just the right amount of sweetness to top off a meal. My measure of a five star restaurant is one where I can take a chance on the menu, order something I've never tried before, and know that whatever. I get will be excellent. Ok forget about every other Thai restaurant in the Greater Indianapolis area. FORGET IT. You can't? Ok, we'll get the MIB to mind wipe you. Thai Spice has a giant menu that I drooled over before I actually got to the restaurant since it had so many items on it. One of the problems I have with Thai food is that I usually don't know what the item is, so I take a while to read the descriptions instead of crying in a corner and ordering Pad Thai. Started off with the Thom Yum, a must. Excellent price for a small...which actually was a bowl big enough for two to share. I had the #81 Padd Priew Wann, and it was by far the most strange and wonderful item I've ever had. "Sweet and sour stir fry with grapes, cucumber, onions, carrots, pineapples, water chestnuts, tomatoes. " Soak that in a second. FRUIT AND VEGETABLES TOGETHER. CHAOS! I highly recommend this item. They let you mix sauces too. I read that they have very spicy hot sauces and have recently been trying to avoid the spice hurts the next morning. Mild and Medium mixed together was perfect, although maybe next time I will try not to be such a wiener. I cannot wait to go back to Thai Spice and try some of the other items. read more
