If you want to eat the best pineapple fried rice in Chicago (and anywhere IMO), run here!! The vegetable green curry was a bit spicy for my taste, but my boyfriend loved it as well. We both also got sushi rolls (one vegan) and miso soups. Even the miso soup beat any miso soup I've ever had, with little tofu cubes and a generous amount of seaweed. All of this (2 entrees, 2 soups, and 2 rolls) cost us $50! We were amazed at how delicious the food was for so cheap. I wish we would have taken pictures, but we ate it so quick. I hate to do this, because I really wanted to like this place, but Thai Spoon was a very forgettable experience for all of us. Unfortunately, I have to give it 2 stars. It might even deserve 1 star. I liked the concept of a Thai restaurant with a sushi menu. The art on the walls were great. What could go wrong? First off, I don't think the servers here know what the menu items are. We ordered a samurai roll to start. This was based on a Yelp user's professional picture posted of it with the caption saying that it was the samurai maki. Cool, looks good, we will get one. When it came out, it was a completely different roll. When we asked, our waitress said that the picture was incorrect. Fine, ok, Yelp user didn't know what he was talking about. Annoying, but not their fault. But are they telling the truth? No reason to disbelieve at this point. Though the picture did look like it was posted by someone associated with the restaurant. Second ~ One of the people in our party ordered the unagi don. Unagi is eel. When his bowl came out, there was no eel in it. The server gave him a slight variation of the chirashi bowl that I had ordered. In fact, it looked just about identical. Uhhh, this is bizarre. Why doesn't your eel bowl have any eel? And, why is it the same as my chirashi bowl? When we asked, the server played dumb and innocent, making us feel stupid for asking. Complete denial on their part. What the heck. Anyways, by now, you probably have a good idea about how the rest of the meal went. While refills on water came quick, that was about the only thing they had going for them. The sushi did not taste fresh and seemed suspect to say the least. What good first impressions I had from the start had pretty much all disappeared. This place is crazy. I ordered here from Doordash on June 2, 2019 Order: Cucumber Salad Sweet Potato Maki Chicken Pad Thai While the portions were very generous the food was "not on point." The Cucumber Salad was sweet and not tangy and the cucumber was hard in texture and not in a crunchy way-just not ripe. The Sweet Potato Maki-which was tempura style, did not appear to have the mayonnaise in it and the "chunks of sweet potato" were not cooked and I could not even eat more than one piece. The rest went into the garbage. The Chicken Pad Thai-There was a very generous portion of chicken included with the noodles; however, the Pad Thai Sauce tasted more like a Peanut Satay Sauce-no sweetness of tamarind-just tasted like someone mixed in peanut butter. I've ordered food from here numerous times, and my new favorite dish is the pad see eiw. It is unbelievably delicious and in my opinion the best I've had in the city. I've tried this dish at quite a few places, and Thai spoon is by far the best. It is so flavorful and saucy, I will be dreaming about it. Tried out the shrimp shumai today and was pleasantly surprised. So simple yet so delicious. My partner got the teriyaki chicken Japanese main dish, and was super underwhelmed. My search for the best Thai in Chicago continues with Thai Spoon, a spot located on the southern end of State and close to theaters and other attractions nearby in Downtown Chicago. My friend and I came here right before a show and was surprised to see how much seating the restaurant offers. For a Friday evening, it was pretty empty inside, but I wouldn't let that trick you into thinking the food here wasn't good. With a combo of sushi and Thai dishes, you're hitting up the best date spot munchies. We ordered a couple of dishes to split: - Chicken Satay ($6) - peanut sauce on a stick of chicken is always delicious. Great starter! - Santa Monica/Spider/Mexican Rolls - all the sushi rolls here were pretty good for the price that we paid too (each being around $8). Expect lots of sauce to be drizzled over. - Lad Nar Chicken ($9) - thick fried noodles with gravy sauce, chicken, and veggies. This was the standout of our meal and one to try. We also ordered two Thai tea boba drinks which were good as well. You really can't go wrong with Thai tea, although they did add a lot more ice than I would have liked in our drinks. With a friendly atmosphere, good service, and affordable pricing, I'd say Thai Spoon is definitely well worth the visit if you are around in need of some good Asian fixings. read more

I was walking around the South Loop area with my boyfriend and we came across this place. He's a curry enthusiast so he insisted we eat here for dinner. When we first walked in, we were taken away by the huge aquarium and display by the front door. It was really nice to see some authentic decorations and it got us excited to try their food. The service was friendly and we were seated immediately. The waitress recommended the Red Curry as we asked for the spiciest and also recommended the Pad Thai as the most popular dish. We ended up ordering both and Edamame as an appetizer. We even tried their Lychee Smoothie and that was absolute sugar goodness. The food came out fast and had the perfect temperature. The Red Curry wasn't as spicy as we'd liked it to be but it was super creamy and delicious. The rice to curry ratio was a little off. I wish they would give a little bit more rice with the curry because after dumping the rice into the curry bowl, it felt like we were eating soup rather than curry. The Pad Thai also tasted really good but was a little on the oily side. We enjoyed our dinner here and we'll definitely come back if we are ever in the area again! I really wanted to like this place as it seems family-owned, but the food was meh at best. I got the beef salad, soft shell crab, and spicy basil w/chicken to go. I thought the beef salad would be like nam tok, bc it is a Thai place. But no. Instead, I got bits of what looked like deep-fried beef jerky (sien hang) that barely had any seasoning, tossed with some bits of cucumber served on top of a spring salad mix. Wow. That was a first and never again. The soft shell crab was better, although they also served that on top of a spring salad mix so it was soggy by the time I got home to tty it. And the spicy basil w/chicken was only okay, too. Idk; it felt like something was missing. Maybe it needed more basil? It ended up being super saucy and for the price you pay, I wish they could've added a fried egg to it like most prad kra pow's go. Overall, the place was avg at best. The food wasn't a particular stand-out but I can see the draw if you're a tourist looking for a quick bite. This is my new go to Thai and sushi place . Their prices are really fair for quality and quantity that you get. I came here for the sushi but I love pineapple fried rice and this quickly became one of my favorites. It is walking distance to me so whenever I want to eat out and am indecisive, this is it right here. I have never been disappointed with their rolls . I ordered the pad kee Mao (drunken noodles) with tofu and it was delicious. I usually prefer drunken noodles from this particular spot I usually go to close to home but I'm glad I tried this place out. The CA rolls were not the best (being from CA, I've have much better sushi without imitation crab), but it was nice to have the option of ordering sushi along with my Thai food. Our food came out very fast, and the server was also nice enough to split our checks as requested. Friends ordered various dishes such as the Massaman curry, rainbow roll, etc, and all were decently pleased. WARNING - if ordering delivery it uses postmates, if you do not have a postmates account there is no where to tip your driver! Have cash on hand- our driver ran off before we could tip and we were distraught to find out there was no way to add a tip after the fact.
