I've been going here for a couple years now, and think they are best thai food I've had in Austin. The dishes I always have are the Panang Beef, and their Pad Thai. They also have what i think is the best Thom Ka Gai soup (coconut curry lime juice broth with chicken). Friends I've eaten there with have also said their Pad Kee Mao and Pad See You is good. This is an absolutely wonderful place to eat. The food is excellent and each dish is prepared after you place your order so if there is any customization you want; it can be handled easily. This is not a fancy place, but one thing I noticed the first time I was there was the wide diversity of folk who were eating there. This was at lunch during the week. The next time we went was for lunch on a weekend and they were not busy at all. The wait staff were extremely friendly and helpful and we will certainly go back many more times, even though it is a 25-minute drive from our house. read more

I'm a lover of Thai restaurants, great and small. Curry can be so different depending on where you go- which is the fun of it. Thai Taste has a delightful Mussamun curry with a delightful tangy-ness I feel is lacking in other recipies. The carrots in it were fresh and bright orange. The consistancy was not overly gloopy or thin.I have also tried the green curry there, and if you like extra spicy dishes this fits the bill. With the lunch special you get rice, egg roll, and Thom Ka or Tom Yum soup which is a good deal. Perhaps the ambiance could be worked on, but considering they just opened I'm not harping on that. It is clean, efficient and fast which is much more important. I hope this restaurants sticks around for a long time. read more

I love this place for both their food and service. I have eaten here at least 50 times. I understand that not all people are going to enjoy the same dishes equally but I have had trouble understanding why there are any poor reviews. I have had consistently excellent service at this restaurant. If you are friendly to the waitstaff they will more than return this friendliness to you. I have asked for simple modifications to orders without any hint of complaint from the servers (which I can't say for all restaurants). Not only that, but they consistently get my order right -- even when I have made modifications. For example, I've had cashews added to my dish (for a very reasonable charge) or switched broccoli for carrots. I try to keep it simple (to avoid being too much of a pain) and I tip well for their consistently positive attitude and accurate service. On many occasions the owner/manager (who is Thai and whose parents still live in Thailand) has visited my table to make sure I am happy with my food and service. My experience at this restaurant, therefore, has been completely opposite to anyone who has complained about the service. The food has been consistently very good. I really like their Pad Thai (mine has been very flavorful). When I am trying to be healthy I order the Chicken or Shrimp Pad Broccoli and add Snow Peas. It has a light brown sauce that is very flavorful. If I want spicy, then I might order the Pad Kaprao. This dish has your choice of meat in a spicy brown sauce with basil, broccoli and onions, although I usually substitute snow peas for the broccoli--very tasty. Their Pad Plik Pao (your choice of meat in a spicy sweet brown sauce with several vegetables) is extremely flavorful and excellent. My nephew loves the Pad Khing (he asks for it to be modified to be more spicy), Fried Rice and Pad Thai. The only dish I've tried that I would just rate as average (not bad just not as tasty as other dishes) is the Pad Woon Sen. If you have special preferences just let the server know to inform the kitchen (i.e. you want it mildly spicy or very spicy or with a strong soy sauce flavor, etc.). If they know what you want they will try to make you happy (if it is possible to make the dish to your liking). I concentrate on the main courses, as opposed to the appetizers, so I cannot give a fair review on them. I have had the crispy rolls, however, and they were very tasty. If you are debating on trying this restaurant than I recommend you come for lunch. On their lunch special you get soup or a salad with peanut dressing (yum, I love their peanut dressing) a crispy roll, your choice from numeorus main courses, all at a reasonable price. That should give you a good sample for choosing if this restaurant is good to your taste. If you are looking for an elegant restaurant with violins playing in the background than this is not the place. If you are looking for a restaurant where you can feel comfortable and get food in a neighborhood restaurant type venue then come to Thai Taste. The cement floor may be blotchy (with signs of wear) but it is CLEAN and well-maintained (sugar packets and artificial sweetener consistently added, soy sauce container clean and filled, tables wiped down, etc.). When I walk inside I feel as comfortable as if I was walking into an old friend's house (no pretension, just an enjoyable time). Frankly, I ask for the fortune cookie at the end of the meal -- not because it is authentic Thai -- but because it is a nice punctuation to the meal. If YOU don't want the fortune cookie (as one reviewer complained) just ask them to take it back as I am sure they will be happy to do so. The more you come the better they will come to know you and the more they will learn your preferences in order to please you. Clearly, this restaurant has earned a place on my keeper shelf. read more

I absolutely love this place and crazy it at least 5 times a month. Very authentic and the ladies are actually from Thailand and super sweet. Yes they get caught up and can't be with you right away during peak hours like lunch ( great specials) but it's because their food is so great. Best green curry HANDS DOWN. I love this restaurant. Being half Thai with a Thai mother who cooked all the time and growing up in Thailand, this is the best Thai restaurant in Austin. I see a lot of reviews on here that talk about the panang and other curry's, but that's not what I base good Thai food on at all. You can make a decent panang, mussamun curry and all the rest of the foods along those line from a can of Maesr which is easily found in any Asian grocery store, many of these restaurants use this. I have tried all of their salads, noodle dishes and a few rice dishes and they've all been excellent. My favorite dish which is almost impossible to find in Austin is the Thai Dried Noodle, but to make it a true Bangkok experience, you need to get the egg noodle. You would think it's a very simple dish to make, but it's not. Half the places in Houston can't make it. Thrilled that this place has opened. I go there about once a week. Yes, the ambiance is lacking, but what authentic Asian restaurant can you think of has it? Go to the best restaurants in Thailand and you will find this lacking as well because the focus is on the food. Madam Mam's can't touch this place, maybe on atmosphere, but not on the food. read more

I've been eating at Thai Taste since they opened, twice per week at least, somewhere in the range of 500 meals. When Thai Kitchen Wm. Cannon closed, I found out that their chef went to Thai Taste, so I followed and have not been disappointed. I would starve without them! They are sensitive to my gluten-free needs (no eye-rolling, please...), their curries are spicy, authentic, and delicious, and their Pad Thai is the best I've ever had. I visited Thai Taste two times right after they opened last summer, and I thought it was decent, but I wanted larger portions. Fast forward 9 months- I had a terrible head cold and needed my fix of Tom Ka soup. This place is super close to my house, which is bonus, and I have yet to find an amazing thai place in town (it seems everywhere is stingy with their veggies and kind of dirty, if you ask me) so I raced to get to Thai Taste before they closed at 10 pm. By the time I got there it was 10:10, I was so sick I was going to cry if I didn't get my soup, so I walked in and asked about placing a to-go order. The guy took one look at me and decided I really needed some soup. So they made it for me and it was the best $9 soup I have ever had in my life! I came back the next day and got another "firepot" to go! The seasonings were perfect, the spice level was right where I like it (moderately spicy) and they were generous with the chicken. If you are in the neighborhood, this is the best Thai food in Oak Hill, Bee Cave or SW Austin, by far. read more

Was passing through the area & decided to stop in (it was our 3rd attempt at a Thai restaurant tonight because apparently places close early Thanksgiving eve). I was a little hesitant because the restaurant was completely empty. Ordered the fried tofu as the appetizer & it was fried to perfection. Most places aren't able to get that right crispyness. We've been wanting to try this place for awhile now and finally went with some friends tonight. The food was great! Five of the six at our table are vegetarian and the staff was very eager to point out they will omit the fish sauce from dishes for vegetarians. Tried the massamun curry, pad thai and pad plick khing. All were very tasty. Boyfriend had the chicken pad kee mao (extra spicy) and said it was hot and quite delicious. The downside was we were the only patrons in the restaurant and I hope that's not usual for them. Now that we have something better than Blue Bamboo to eat in southwest Austin, I hope they don't go out of business. Try this place out. You won't be disappointed! read more

I love Thai food and have tried about every restaurant in town. I wasn't expecting much - but wow! Everything was fresh. The spring rolls were great, loaded with shrimp. The Panang curry was the best I've had here. My friend's dish was de-lish. Can't wait to go back and try the Pad Thai. Given the reasonable prices, and the quality of everything we had, I think THAI TASTE is the best Thai restaurant in Austin. The atmosphere wasn't very intimate (feels a bit like a burger joint) so it might not be a good "date impression" spot, but they more than made up for lack of atmosphere with the quality of the food and the unassuming yet thorough service. Highly recommended and worth dealing with "the Y" to get there. If you love Thai Food, try this place! read more

Possibly the most mediocre food I've eaten in years. Got the Pad Woonsen, which admittedly isn't the most flavorful dish to begin with, but I found myself adding pepper and soy (which I had to ask for, only pepper and salt on the table, no chili sauce) just to make it taste like anything other than rice. Service was whatever, not terrible but I didn't get a water refill and she literally asked for my order the moment I sat down. Salad came swimming in peanut sauce, egg roll was mostly wrapper. Luckily, that's how I like my egg rolls. Food came out fast, portion wasn't generous but was enough for lunch. Since I started working in this area, I've discovered that Oak Hill doesn't have that much in the way of "excellent" for food but plenty of "okay" so I'll probably be back. read more

I work near Thai Taste and I have to say that it is by far my favorite place to take my lunch break. I'm probably in here at least once a week, sometimes twice. I'll admit I haven't tried a wide variety of things off the menu but everything I have had has been good. The lunch combo is a great deal and both the lemongrass and coconut soups are delicious. I will say the spice levels can be a bit inconsistent at times. I LOVE hot and spicy food and on several occasions the spice level of the soups has caught me off guard, making me cough. But I'm okay with this as it has always been tasty regardless. I've had the Panang Curry, which was pretty good. I'll agree with the other reviewer who said the Basil Fried Rice is not very spicy but I usually ask them to increase the spice level and they happily do so. The folks here are extremely nice and helpful. Lately, I tend to get the Pad Thai, which is one of the best examples of this dish that I've had. I like that if I order it with tofu they also include a lot of vegetables. I've also recently decided to try a gluten-free diet and they were very nice and said they could make a gluten-free version for me. I've seen a lot of restaurants come and go from this location and I'm very glad that Thai Taste has stuck around so long. I really hope they continue to do so! read more
