Slightly nicer than your average Thai restaurant, Thaiphoon delivers a solid Thai meal with good service at a pretty decent price. The service stood out as a much better than at other Asian restaurants. I was also impressed by their drink and wine menu. Their Thaiphoon tea isn't too strong, and is basically Thai iced tea with a dash of dancing juice. The fried eggplant and tofu with rice is divine, and leaves you feeling full even without meat. I also had their tom yum soup and loved it- a lot of places have a cheaper, bland version but Thaiphoon delivered a perfectly slightly spicy lemongrass treat. Their dessert menu is also worth checking out- I tried a rice pudding that was slightly sweet and a perfect period to the end of the meal. read more

A good lunch spot. When it gets crowded there is a much longer wait than normal for food. DO NOT get the papaya salad unless you like the gross fishyness of dried shrimp (they really should grind it in a mortalnpestle). it is not as spicy as one would expect. I do like the basil chicken and kung pao chicken. If you want to sleep at your desk, order the pad-see-euw. Great dish there but just fairly greasy and heavy. a dining companion recently ordered the BBQ chix and it looked lovely (atkins friendly if you order no rice, more salad). reasonable prices and service is ok..good option for a sit down place in PA that wont break the bank. read more

I love Thai food and I'm not too picky, but this place was BAD. Both my and I thought our dishes had an aftertaste of gas, like from a gas stove. Mmm. I think not!!! It was my first time there and I asked the waitress what they were known for (every restaurant should have a specialty by the way)! She couldn't recommend anything, so I tried the sweet and sour chicken and kept it safe. It also came with a salad. First of all the salad was not fresh and they put peanut sauce on it, which was too sweet!!! The sweet and sour was a disaster. They put too much sauce that tasted like they used high fructose corn syrup in the sauce. I didn't eat the salad or sweet and sour chicken and was still charged. I will never be back. read more

I always order the pad thai whenever I'm trying a new Thai restaurant, to compare it with the pad thai of other places and that's how I judge whether one place is better than another. In the range of all the Thai places I've been to, including the ones in Thailand, I'd say Thaiphoon falls somewhere right in the middle. Though the taste was right, the chicken in the pad thai was cut into large thick pieces, with the result of being bland and a bit on the dry side. I've had pad thai that comes with a lot more than just chicken slices and noodles (such as bean spouts, onion, shrimp, egg, etc.) so it was a little underwhelming. I also ordered a calamari appetizer, which tasted just like Chinese stir fry (nothing special) and green curry. It was pretty basic curry, loved the big chunks of eggplant, but I would have preferred it to be a little spicier with more veggies and meat in it. Most of it was just curry sauce. Which went well with my brown rice though! Props to them for getting the brown rice right, I'm usually a little hesitant when ordering brown rice because a lot of times its comes out too dry, or hard and undercooked...but they did a lovely job. I'd say, try out other Thai places in the area before you go to this one. read more

Customer service was impeccable however paying $9.95 for a Chinese chicken salad that has 4 one-inch pieces of chicken and 2 lbs of iceberg green lettuce is not what I call a good deal/meal. We also ordered the roti prata and there were only 2 small circles of bread to dip on the sauces and so we had oodles and oodles of sauce left over with no bread to dip in it. I like this place, especially in summer when you can sit outside. The fresh rolls are good and their meat/ veggie dishes taste authentic. However last night was different and I was a little disappointed. I love papaya salad and I ordered one without peanuts. It came with (I'm not allergic so I didn't return it) and the salad was not fresh. The 3 shrimps were cut in half so it looks like more and the papaya tasted a little fermented. Wouldn't recommend ordering it, better go with a noodle dish. read more

This place really isn't that great but if you are craving Thai and in Palo Alto, what can you do? Some of the dishes portions are TINY and you won't believe you are paying $8 for 6 tiny pieces of ROTI with a little bit of sauce. The Pad See Ew is really salty but not flavorful (I think it needs to be sweeter and needs MORE egg for sure). The service isn't that great either, not bad but not particularly friendly either. The waiter never got my friend her Thai Iced Tea and still managed to put it on the tab. When we told them this, they didn't apologize or anything. I would say 2 1/2 stars. read more

The food was mediocre and the service was awful. As we walked in, three waiters passed by us, and none greeted us. After we were seated, the waitress did not smile when she took our order. It felt as though they wanted us in and out of there. However, I noticed that they were nice to their "American" patrons, smiling and saying thank you and offering their kids candy. Came here for lunch and had one of the lunch specials, chicken with garlic, mushroom and herbs served with tofu soup, rice and a small side salad. Food satisfied my palate. Also had golden eggplant served with sweet sauce. Small, busy restaurant that was voted as one of the best some five years ago. Place was packed with twenty-thirty year olds in groups of 5-8. Our waitress brought out the wrong order for one of my friends and when my friend kindly told her that she ordered something else, the waitress tried telling her that she was wrong. The food was good and the waitress staff was friendly and as attentive as they could be as the restaurant was busy. Too many people grow impatient with slow service and slams the review as a result. I have eaten at many Thai places around the Bay including the several operated by the owners of this one in Palo Alto. I have also eaten many dishes from their menus - lunch & dinner. The staff are courteous and not pushy. I have found their timing/attentiveness just right for a causal lunch or dinner . . . nice timing for chatting with companions. I used to come to this place very often months ago. I was surprised to see that the quality of food has come down. I had to add a lot of red chili sauce to get flavor out of my food. I felt that my pot stickers were not homemade but instead were pulled out from the freezer and then were deep fried. The drinks are very sweet and have no alcohol.
