    #3 bun Bo huy
    George F.

Thanh Thai is located outside of the GW supermarket on Atlantic Blvd in Monterey Park. I was staying at the Courtyard Hotel next door which doesn't have any restaurant breakfast options. Thanh Thai is open early. I ordered the bun Bo huy $13 and a Vietnamese ice coffee $4. The restaurant is tiny and has a regular clientele. The regulars that come in don't even need to order the server already knows their name and brings them food. The small bowl of bun Bo Huy was very adequate for BBH at 8 am in the morning. Small slices of beef shank, pork blood cake and pork trotters accompany the broth. The server did recommend their vinegary Thai chili and garlic sauce which was good. Good service. Lots of parking in the supermarket parking lot.

It's a hole in the wall kind of joint but it has great Bun Bo. If you are looking for ambiance and all the frills, this is not it. Come for the Bun Bo when I get my cravings.

When I tell you I have loved this place since I was little, believe it! I have gone here with my family for over 10 years. This is my comfort food; the Mi Quang with a side of Bun Bo soup. This little Vietnamese family owned restaurant never fails to disappoint me. If you are looking for Vietnamese food that isn't your typical Pho or Com Tam, this is the place for you. They have a variety of dishes and daily specials. I always and will always come for their Mi Quang. The owners are the sweetest and when you walk in I can just feel the love in the Vietnamese culture! I would definitely recommend trying this Vietnamese Family Owned Business at least once because I can guarantee you will keep coming back.

Viet ice coffee. Strong enough and not too sweet

Great bun no hue. And good viet coffee. Good house chili sauce and fresh chili and garlic sauce. Good clean broth and fair Portions and fair price.

This is a community restaurant. It may not be the fanciest or the prettiest, but it feels like home to eat here. The staff is always welcoming and friendly, they're like family. Everybody engages with each other but simultaneously also minds their own business if you don't want to talk. My family and I come here every Monday to have their special, Bun Sua, which translates loosely to jellyfish noodles. It's ONLY served Mondays, and is one of the best bowl of vermicelli/noodles you'll ever try. We ask for it with extra mango, and put their pickled green chili garlic and chili paste in because we like spicy food. It's an explosion of flavors and color, and engages all your senses. I highly recommend. We also love their com ga (chicken rice) and bun bo hue (beef vermicelli), but their bun sua is our usual go to on Mondays. They usually run out by 1PM or so, come by early!

Mi Quang Nam (Egg noodle soup)

My favorite Vietnamese place! It's been a while since I've been here (moved away) but the food is still fantastic! My husband got the Bun Bo Gan Huyet Dac Biet and I got the Mi Quang Nam. They make a fantastic spicy pepper paste I love. It's a bit of a hole in the wall but it's clean and the owners are really sweet!

Their prices have not changed in years and the portions remain the same versus shrinkflation. Their menu is not that big but it has your essential Vietnamese dishes. Today I ordered the banh beo bi, vermicelli with nem nuong and egg rolls, nem nuong coun and che ba mau. Banh beo bi are rice cakes topped with shredded pork. It comes with chilies and fish sauce for you to pour on top. The rice cakes are served warm and are super smooth and soft. The thai chilies it comes with are spicy so don't use too much. The vermicelli with nem nuong and egg rolls comes with a slab of meat and a whole egg roll. The bottom are the noodles and mix of veggie and herbs. The nem nuong is sweetened charbroiled pork that is grilled. Think of a sweet meat ball. The egg rolls are super crispy and filled with meat. The noodles go well with the fish sauce and there are a lot of veggies inside. The nem nuong coun is a spring roll that's wrapped in rice paper. It has the meat and lettuce wrapped inside and comes with a dipping sauce. I believe the sauce is made with ground shrimp. For $8 for 3 rolls it is a steal compared to other restaurants. If you are craving Brodards in OC this place can satisfy your craving. Their che ba mau which is a 3 bean dessert has a lot of beans inside topped with coconut milk and shaved ice. It is the person drink to finish your meal and it is not too sweet.

Com Tam is decent, rice texture is on point. Pork chop is marinated well but not enough lemongrass flavor, tender and not dry at all. Baked egg was good but not amazing, seemed like it missing shredded wood ear mushroom. Che Ba Mau by far hands down the worst I've had. Red bean wasn't soft, outer shell/skin was still pretty tough. Not much mung bean either after stirring it literally for about 4 seconds the mung bean basically disintegrated into the liquid. The liquid.. watered down skim milk, not a trace of coconut flavor anywhere. I didn't know you can mess up Che Ba Mau until I had it from here.

This soup is so pungent that the only time I get to savor it is at home and the stink doesn't leave your home for a few days. So, it is to my delight that they offer it here during the weekdays. It is a nicely stacked bowl that has everything but the kitchen sink in it - roast pork belly, catfish, squid, eggplant, and stuffed jalapeno with fried fish cake. Very filling and reasonably priced! The only reason I gave this place a 4 instead of 5 rating is because you can only order certain items from the menu when they open. I wanted to get some Chinese food to-go for my husband, but was told by the server that the other items were only available beginning at 10 am, which is odd to me.

The meat tasted old, the rice was poorly seasoned, their complimentary soup you get when you first sit tasted like poultry. I know there's chicken feet in there but it didn't taste like 'chicken' it tasted like when you walk in to a poultry soup. It tastes like how the poultry shop smells. If you haven't been to a poultry shop, it tastes like if you're around a lot of live chickens. My brother got the brisket. It was the worst he's ever had too. He said it was chewy and lack flavor. They might be cutting costs because the economy is bad. I notice a large portion of their menu was covered up or dishes crossed out. Even the beverages got cut! You can only get like 3 different beverages which are ovaltine, coffee, and something else. They even cut out lemon ice tea. They're a mom and pop shop and it would be sad if they're out of business because of that reason, but the food was unfortunately not good. Service was really good though, but we were the only ones there majority of the time we were dining. The price for the hainan chicken was about $17, brisket was about the same. There's a spacious parking lot but there's rarely any spots available and will require you to wait for a free one. The interior is honestly very pretty. It's decorated with overhead chandeliers with bright lights and marble tables. When your table is ready, they also give you a tray full of chopsticks, napkins, and forks. Each table also has hoisin, sriracha, chili sauce, and another sauce I'm not too sure about. After we ordered, I got my pho da biet maybe 5 minutes after. The cha gios also came out a few minutes after too. Unfortunately, my boyfriend's com tam was forgotten about until after I devoured my pho. We even asked them about it in the middle and it was checked on but we weren't updated and thought they had went ahead and cancelled it but it still came out. No biggy, we packed it to-go since we basically split the pho da biet. Food: Pho da biet (9.5/10): The pho was soooo delicious. It was meaty with a little bit of sweetness to it. This is one of the few places where I don't feel the need to sauce down my pho to enjoy it. There's a good amount of meat in here. If you're a tendon enjoyer, there's about 3 big chunks in here. I love the way they separate everything. If you order this, it comes with the stone bowl at no additional costs. They separate the noodles and ribeye on the side and let you "decorate" it yourself. There was also a good amount of noodles in here. Com tam (7.9/10): I thought that this one was just okay. We got the grilled pork and grilled pork chop and I thought that the meats were cooked perfectly. There was a nice char to the meats and it was seasoned deliciously. It came with a lot of rice and a side of soup to enjoy! I did enjoy this fish sauce more than the one that came with the egg rolls. Overall, I wish this dish came out the same time as the pho so we could've enjoyed it together. Cha gio/Imperial Rolls (7/10): I love egg rolls but this one didn't really stand out to me. It comes with a good amount of vegetables that you can use to wrap your egg rolls in. I wish the fish sauce that came with this was more salty. Maybe it was that day, but I couldn't really tell what was inside the filling. It was all mushed in together instead of different layers. The skin was very thin and crispy which I really liked!
