Thanh Thai is located outside of the GW supermarket on Atlantic Blvd in Monterey Park. I was staying at the Courtyard Hotel next door which doesn't have any restaurant breakfast options. Thanh Thai is open early. I ordered the bun Bo huy $13 and a Vietnamese ice coffee $4. The restaurant is tiny and has a regular clientele. The regulars that come in don't even need to order the server already knows their name and brings them food. The small bowl of bun Bo Huy was very adequate for BBH at 8 am in the morning. Small slices of beef shank, pork blood cake and pork trotters accompany the broth. The server did recommend their vinegary Thai chili and garlic sauce which was good. Good service. Lots of parking in the supermarket parking lot. read more

This place is located on the back side of GW Supermarket on Atlantic. It's one of the 3-4 restaurants on this side. Parking is usually not an issue as most people tend to park in the front. There's only about 2 small tables, 1 long table and 1 round table and a couple of tables against the wall. Not a very big restaurant IMO. They are CASH ONLY, so just remember that when coming here. I ordered their bun bo hue for $13.50. Let me tell you, this has got to be the best I've had next to my moms. This version closely resembles what my moms taste like. Although, their beef here is not as flavorful as my moms because she cooks her beef overnight and the seasoning has time to soak in to the beef. The noodles was cooked perfectly and bouncy. The broth was fantastic, although, I found it to be a tiny bit oily and that's justified because of the chili oil they use to spice this up. I don't think it's overly spicy, but if it goes down the wrong tube, it will definitely hit you hard. I also noticed that the water they serve you looks to be from one of those places where you can fill your water for $.25/gallon. Only reason why I say this is that I noticed a bunch of 5 gallon bottles sitting in one of the corners. I can also taste how clean the water was. It was so good, that I had to order 2 more to go for dinner. They also have daily specials available. Their menu is not super bloated, but that's ok, since I only came here for this one dish. After speaking to what I can only guess was the owner, they had a larger size available. It's not written anywhere on the menu, but he told me that only the regulars know about this hidden menu item. This is the first time I have experienced and charged for a glass of plain water. First time here and will not be coming back. This is a community restaurant. It may not be the fanciest or the prettiest, but it feels like home to eat here. The staff is always welcoming and friendly, they're like family. Everybody engages with each other but simultaneously also minds their own business if you don't want to talk. My family and I come here every Monday to have their special, Bun Sua, which translates loosely to jellyfish noodles. It's ONLY served Mondays, and is one of the best bowl of vermicelli/noodles you'll ever try. We ask for it with extra mango, and put their pickled green chili garlic and chili paste in because we like spicy food. It's an explosion of flavors and color, and engages all your senses. I highly recommend. We also love their com ga (chicken rice) and bun bo hue (beef vermicelli), but their bun sua is our usual go to on Mondays. Don't expect much from this place. What you see is what you get. The food is mediocre. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue. It has some flavor, but it is weak. It did have a pretty strong lemongrass aroma, but that was mainly it. The noodles were fine, but slightly overcooked. The meat is dry, bland, and overcooked. Not to be dramatic, but the sheer mediocrity of the food was a bit upsetting. However, the environment is pretty off-putting. While it may be typical for a Vietnamese restaurant, it is way more off-putting than other Vietnamese restaurants. The interior is cramped, bustling, and old. I was sat at a long table with other customers with absolutely no social distancing. There was people smoking cigarettes right outside the entrance, which easily finds its way into the restaurant. The service is not great. The staff aren't super friendly and welcoming. While admittedly there was a bit of a language barrier, I still would've appreciated a bit more hospitality. They are cash only, which while is commonplace at a lot of restaurants, is a pretty huge downside regardless. The pricing, however, is average. In all honesty, this place is more-so for older Vietnamese folk to get their quick fix and to socialize with their friends. If you are on the younger side, this place isn't really for you. It isn't really a great family restaurant as well. Granted, this place has been around for quite a long time, so it is old-school. While I would give this place three-stars for the quality of food, I am pretty off-put by the additional facts stated above. I recommend that you stay far away from this place. read more

I went today because my friends have raved about their friday special pho ga (chicken pho). I definitely had to try it out for myself as i love pho ga. The location of the spot is in the shun fat plaza facing the north side. It's the 2nd eating place on your left. The sign says vietnamese something. There are regulars who kick it here playing cards, talking, and just relaxing. It could be intimidating for those like me who come for the first time, but the workers were very friendly to me. I didn't completely look over the menu but i do know they have bun bo hue (yummy) and i'm going to assume regular pho & rice dishes. I mean it is a vietnamese restaurant. But i came here for the pho ga so how was it? I usually go to eat pho ga on the place on new & hellman. That one makes their pho ga like hai nam chicken style but in a chicken broth. This one however is more vietnamese pho broth i would think with beef balls, fat white noodles, and cilantro. They also have the unique spice/herb that is brown and crunchy. I don't kno what it's called, but that is what makes the soup imo. The chicken was very juicy and meaty. Once i added in the satay sauce .. Omg the soup awoke! I devoured the thing like it was my last meal. For $7.00, i think it was a good meal. I'll definitely come back and try the other stuff on the menu. read more

They only serve bun suong on Tuesdays and if you decide to dine in on a Tuesday, you can see that everyone in the restaurant ordered the same dish. The takeout portion is slightly larger. You can also ask for the thicker bun noodles if you prefer larger noodles. Location: in the plaza across from the Atlantic plaza. Next to the car wash Parking: might be a little tough since it shares a parking lot with a supermarket and other stores Service: excellent! Food comes out very fast! Huge Tree Pantry was closed (noooo) and we were starving so we decided to see what was decent in the same shopping center. This hole-in-the-wall had quite a few people in there at 2pm (most of whom I later learned were probably just members of the owner's family... haha). The regular menu didn't have much that appealed to me and we saw on the wall they had pho ga (chicken pho) as their special of the day. We got two bowls of it and OMG, it was so good! The chicken was super fresh and almost as good as my mom's chicken. The broth was flavorful and not filled with MSG. To top it off, they had amazing pickled chili pepper with garlic. Although Thanh Thai has been around for over 10 years it is a pretty tricky place to find. In a nutshell, you must come here on Tuesdays to try out their special of the day: a rice noodle soup called Bun Suong! Absolutely delectable. For lack of a better word, this place is 'strange' on their public relations, but very tasty food nonetheless! Allow me to enumerate a litany of strange facts: 1.) They close very early - 3 p.m. So if you have a 9-5 job away from Monterey Park, you may never get to eat here on the weekdays for lunch. 2.) They act like they don't need your business. They don't need too - its always quite packed daily with patrons getting their grub on and people walking in and taking out. 3.) Sometimes they run out of food by 1:30 pm. 4.) Even though this place is not fancy at all, has only 10 tables, and looks like a little hole-in-the-wall, you will see men pulling up in $100,000 cars to come and hang out. go figure. Must be that good. Everyday, they have a specials for the day. My personal favorite is on Tuesdays when they serve this delectable soup called BUN SOUNG. It is a rice noodle soup with a clear broth and has pork, cilantro, onions, pumpkin, and pineapple it! Very delicious! Also, you have to order their Large Lemon Iced Tea. Warning: this drink will get you extremely tweaked out! It comes in this big container - similar to those containers that restaurants give to you when you want to take home some food to go. I'd like to thank Thanh Thai (and my boyfriend) for introducing me to Banh Xeo. As a child, i used to drive by thinking this was a crusty run down plaza. I can now say i have frequented more than half of the restaurants in this place and they're all decent. There is the stinky tofu place, big tree pastry, and now thanh thai. we ordered banh xeo, a rice dish with beef, and a noodle soup dish - tomato based soup, not pho. everything was alright. nothing mind blowing. the rice wasn't broken, much to my disappointment. the noodle soup was a little bland, i much prefer pho. the banh xeo was divine though. yummy in my tummy! being a complete noob, i was lucky to have my boyfriend provide a tutorial. wet the rice paper, fill it with the lettuce and crispy egg, wrap it up really quick - before it wraps around the plate!. dip in their delicious sweet fish sauce and enjoy! read more
