This place is hip, and maybe too hip for me. Prices don't line up with product (quality and portion), service is slow, drinks are pretty much fine but pretentiously over-garnished. I don't need a wad of herbs in my drink; a sprig (or even two) is fine, especially if it isn't a muddled cocktail. When it takes nearly half an hour to get anything, on top of all the other issues, it's hard to tell what is most disappointing overall. I do enjoy a tiki night, and old town Arvada is fun in general. read more

Made from scratch meals, house drinks from the pre-probation period, draft beer choices from local Colorado craft breweries, outstanding staff and an upstairs where you actually walk through an old phone booth! Had it not been for the comedy show this evening, we probably still wouldn't have known about this irresistibly friendly, amazingly fresh and adorably quaint take on a speakeasy. So, with some internet research I happened across The Arvada Tavern. We took a leap to try it for the first time. There were two couples. When we arrived we promptly greeted and seated. The waitress was great, friendly and helpful throughout our dining experience. We started with handcrafted cocktails. For dinner we ordered, The Chicken Schnitzel, Colorado Spiced Trout, Potato & Cheese Pierogi and hummus with fresh veggies. These tough critics loved everything. On Saturday 2/15/14, a group of us went here for a get-together. I made reservations earlier in the week for 6pm and was glad I did, as there was a line when my husband and I got there. We were seated in the back room all to ourselves, which has some advantage/disadvantages; 1. Your party is the only table in the back room so it is fairly quiet and nice. 2. The backroom looks to be double as a storage room so it wasn't very pretty. You can see metal shelves of towels, and a door to a stock room. 3. The stock room door has a window so every time a staff goes in there, the lights glare right into the people seated in front of the door. My husband and I arrived 15 minutes late and four people out of our group was at the table already. They had ordered drinks and appetizers for themselves but had not received their orders. My husband and I sat there while our waitress came and went twice and she did not acknowledge either of us. I finally had to stop her and give her our orders. She is very nice but I think she was just a little flustered that night with the chaotic rush that the tavern was getting. The pretzel is superb but I wouldn't call it a pretzel. More like a pizza with cheese, red bell peppers and jalapeños. The sauce looks like country gravy but it's really good cheese dip for the pretzel. The drinks were all a bit too heavy on the liquor so I didn't really enjoy the cocktails, but I'm sort of weak in that area and was expecting something sweeter....so if you're like me and looking for sweet, brightly colored cocktails, this is not the place for that. But on the other hand, my husband loved their beer list. He practically tried them all and he said his favorite was the Big, Bad Baptist, which is a dark ale, I believe. My entire group agreed that the food is superb. Another reason we all loved our first visit was because the owners would stop by and ask us if everything is ok. All in all, we had a fantastic time with great friends and great food. Will definitely go again. I only wish the owners would change that back room to look better and maybe put something over the window so that it won't be glaring light into someone's eyes, momentarily blinding them. read more

Went to the Arvada Tavern on a Friday night at 7 pm and got right in with our party of four. The waitstaff was great- we even got a short history of the building. They have a great menu of handcrafted cocktails, including a great Manhattan, and the rare in Colorado Szarak. The beer selection is short but very good. I had the buffalo meatloaf and it was freakin' awesome. Tender, well spiced, sitting on a bed of mashed potatoes and lightly covered in brown gravy. Super good! Others had the trout- really tasty-, the pirogi- very nice, and a hamburger that was reported to be excellent. Great bartenders, kinda loud (but fun) and the upstairs is a bar and stage for local talent. Great place, we will be back! read more

Has the best cocktails in Arvada. Their New York strip steak was the best I've had. They used to have the best burger in Colorado: The Olde Town Burger. It had bacon, green chili cream cheese, a fried egg and an onion ring. Bar none: The best burger in Colorado. Then they took it off the menu. I'm hopeful they will bring it back as they rotate the menu regularly. Tiki Tuesdays have a special drink menu only available on Tuesday. They also have live music upstairs. I have been here three times now. We went when it first opened and had amazing service and food. We were so impressed, we told lots of people about it. We don't live nearby, so we can only go when in the area. Anyway, we went back when they opened the upstairs and friends of ours rented it out for a party. We loved the new area and our catered food was good. Service was friendly. This last time that we went, we had to wait almost an hour when we were told 30 minutes and then our food took almost an hour. We were late to our next destination. So, I still recommend this place for atmosphere, food, and drink. However, try to avoid it on a weekend night. read more

Cruised by a little early on a Sunday evening to grab some dinner. First impressions: dimly lit and candles, exposed brick walls added to the overall ambiance. Sinatra crooned in the background, which was a nice touch. The wait staff was very attentive, answering all our questions about the menu. We ordered the white bean & roasted red pepper hummus for an appetizer, which was very tasteful. For dinner we ordered the short rib pasta and chicken schnitzel. The artichokes that came with the short rib pasta were amazing. Bursting with flavor. The short rib dish overall was flavorful. The sauce was not heavy, but was rather light to medium bodied. The chicken schnitzel was pretty good, the chicken was moist and the breading was crisp. As the night went on, the place began to fill up. The bartenders look to be on top of their game. I also ordered a Czech mule, which was as good as any mule I have had prior, maybe a little better. Overall, we loved this place. A bit on the expensive side if you're looking for a nice casual night out. (63.00 for appetizer, two drinks and two main dishes) but definitely worth it. read more

The best bar / restaurant in the heart of Olde Town. Mike and staff have done a great job of turning around this location, which had faltered in recent years. The '40's style decor and music are comfortable and classy, and as in any bar, it's the people who make it great. Adam and Andy behind the bar are top notch bartenders, which makes such a huge difference in the experience. A truly great bar like this makes you feel better about the world and yourself than you did when you walked in. That's what it's about. I had the schnitzel last night, served with capers and a little taste of anchovy. I was surprised at how quickly it came out. Also a couple excellent cocktails... The carefully handmade mint julep was done right, with the metal cup and the little spoon/straw. I plan to eventually eat and drink my way through the entire menu, because it's all been very good so far. I don't know how they got such a good chef, but he clearly is on his A-game, and I'm sure the new, expanded, well-designed kitchen helps. I have not eaten here; this review will be updated when I do (and I will). For now, I can only speak to the bar upstairs. If you are a fan of classic cocktails done the old fashioned way and with premium liquors, you'll love the upstairs "ballroom." There's a cool stage, wood floors (they also have swing dancing, weekly if I'm not mistaken), and the design could literally be lifted and dropped into any decade since prohibition. The bartenders are true mixologists and provide great service; hard to complain about this one. If the food is as good as I'm told it is, my update will very likely add a fifth star. read more

This place is EXACTLY what Old Town Arvada needed. I've been a half-dozen times and have always been pleased with what I've gotten from the bar and the kitchen both. The bartenders are true mixologists and know their craft. To the reviewers complaining about the "lack" of beer choices - go across the street to the brewery if you are in Old Town and craving beer selection. Also? A constantly rotating selection of ten or so craft beers is not a bad selection, you're just spoiled. The Bavarian pretzel (a limited quantity made every day) is a must-try. The mac & cheese is excellent, as is the steak melt. My girlfriend loves the Portbella Harvest, which is a large 'shroom cap stuffed with mixed grains and served with veggie soup - inexplicably this is on the small plate/app portion of the menu, when it is clearly the most interesting vegetarian option on the menu and is big enough to be an entree. At $10-15 for entrees, nothing will break the bank. The decor is really cool, with the classic pressed-tin ceiling tiles over the bar that you used to see in all of the downtown Denver drinking establishments. That's cool if I grab a handful of spinach from the bag in the fridge, slice some red onion and maybe a tomato, shake out some bacon and cheese, and take it to work in a tupperware...but it is absolute bull---- alongside 10 dollar cocktails at a bar of this caliber. My husband ordered a 11$ burger, and then didn't finish it. He was so excited about it too, and I've never seen him not finish a burger. I have traveled all over the US and out side of it for work and in all my travels this is definitley one of my favorite bars. When my girlfriend and I walked in we didnt even knkw where the bar was at first untill we saw the phone booth with a hidden stair case. That alone was awesome. Then once you get up stairs is one of the coolest laid back cocktail bars. We also went on a Saturday night and they had live music. The music was gret and the little venue would make any live music great. Now on to my favorite part, the drinks. There is a long list of cocktails, beer, and wine to choose from. My girlfriend and I got two different cocktails and they were both aome of the best we ever had. The bartenders and staff were all very pleasant and made the whole experience. I've been here twice now, and I am obsessed. The drinks are amazing. At first they seem expensive, but when you take into account the fact that they are handcrafted and pack a nice punch, I say they're well-worth it. There's something awesome about knowing the person making your drink cares about it, and they aren't just pouring cheap alcohol into a glass and mixing it with soda from a spray nozzle. Plus, the cocktails are unique and classic. I loved how perfectly they paired with the spirit of the bar. The space was crowded both times I've been in, but it wasn't crowded in an uncomfortable, sweaty way like other bars. The entire joint has a prohibition-style atmosphere and I loved feeling like I was in a speakeasy of sorts. The waitstaff here is also incredible. During my visit multiple people checked in on us and I felt extremely comfortable there. The Arvada Tavern is definitely my new favorite spot in town--I won't be going every weekend because it is a bit expensive--but I think it's a great destination for those moments when I want to be a bit fancier. Stellar ambiance, delicious food, and great staff. Everything I could ask for in a restaurant! 2 friends and I decided to stop in randomly on Valentine's Day before we went to a film at the Landmark down the street. Knowing it was Valentine's Day we expected it to be a madhouse, and it was certainly busy (even arriving during a lull) but we were seated immediately. Our server was friendly and just the right level of sassy, and she made sure to give real recommendations and opinions rather than simply pushing the house specials. She even gave the rest of us a fancy liqueur cherry that 1 friend got in their drink so we could all try it. The preztel appetizer is so amazing, my chef friend kept declaring that they needed the bread recipe. The jalapeno had just enough kick in the chedder to make it exciting, and it was gone in minutes. The bison meatloaf had the most delicious brown sauce to accompany it, I admit I usually low-brow it and add ketchup to my meatloaf but I couldn't bear to desecrate it this time. The asparagus was grilled with just enough crunch to it and the mashed potatoes had good flavour. My friends got the burger with various fixings and were loving every minute of it. Additionally wedge fries were perfectly crispy and well seasoned. Don't even get me started on the desserts, there weren't a huge list of options but both the strudel and the bread pudding were decadent ways to end an awesome meal. The ambiance was great, with a 50s music vibe and a dark lounge feel. It worked as both a singles joint and a date restaurant, and the crowd ranged from college age to mid 40s on average. I think that the three star "a-ok" rating is very appropriate for this place. While I enjoyed my experience here, I can't say that I was blown away by any means. First off, their beer selection is extremely limited and they were out of all of my choices off of their wine list...not the best first impression. I settled in on an amber ale that was really good and decided to try the fried rainbow trout with the blue cheese sauce and roasted mushrooms, asparagus, and tomatoes. I enjoyed this dish and am glad I got it. The mushrooms were my favorite part. They were slightly crispy which added a great texture. One of my dining companions got the Salisbury steak which was so tough it took two of us to get it cut into bite size pieces. While the flavor was good, it was too tough to eat. She ended up sending it back...it was still on our bill. Again, not the greatest first impression. While I would return to the Arvada Tavern if I were in the area, I would not go out of my way for it. read more

Muy Excellante! Wow. We just pulled this place up on Yelp looking for dinner before meeting some peeps for drinks, and I'm darn happy we did! I don't think I can effectively describe this decor, it's just exactly what I would expect a place in Olde Town Arvada to look like. It's old and traditional. The menu boasts some fantastic cocktails to match every taste. We tried a couple, the Sazarac and the Tipparary, you should too. perfectly balanced and very strong. For dinner I had the the elk sausage and Jess the grilled cheese (with bacon of course!) and split them. I had a tough time choosing between bites. The latter came with the best tomato bisque I've ever had. The service was really friendly too. I'm definitely going to find my way back here soon, this is a great little spot! Cheers! read more

Great place that has your choice of outdoor seating or stylish indoor seating. The bar is classic with dark wood all around. It is one sexy looking bar. We tasted the grilled wings to start, which were delicious, and moved on to the perogies and pork burger for dinner! This place is far and away the best thing going in Arvada, and as the reigning Duke (A # 1) I would know, maybe. Everything on the menu is fantastic here; a menu that includes the best burger in Arvada, pierogies, walleye, schnitzel, Kobe beef short rib, and some of the greatest Colorado microbrews. The 1920s speakeasy theme is pretty cool too, and the bartenders dress the part very well. If you've lived in Arvada for a long time you may remember the Tavern as the frightening dive bar it was in the late-1990s (I was in my twenties then, and coming in here at that time meant you had balls like church-bells, or a death wish). Food - to die for. We had the renowned pretzel to start, delicious! We tried the trout, potato dish, macaroni and cheese and the ribs. Our party of five happily shared all of the dishes, as it was all outstanding. We finished with the apple strudel, genuine German style strudel that capped an awesome evening of food. Cocktails - quite an interesting menu. We had the Lavender cocktail which was outstanding. Waitstaff - our waitress was incredible, she definitely contributed to to he positive experience. The atmosphere is dark and perhaps a little intimidating for families with smaller children, but don't be afraid if you do bring them, they'll be fine. So I'm very torn on this place. Atmosphere, music, location, drinks & food were great! It's got a great underground speakeasy type feel and we walked in to jazz playing overhead. The rest & bar are candlelight and could be romantic although it can get loud. They've got an impressive and creative cocktail menu and killer sangria. The brie with cranberries & pears...heavenly. My dining companions both enjoyed their food and the pickiest said it was the best burger ever. The downside. Initially our waitress was very attentive and prompt, however by the end of the meal she'd cozied up to a table and spent an inordinate amount of time over there. Enough so that we couldn't get any ketchup to finish fries, nor the bill or even another round of drinks. Additionally, there was a group of drunks that had been over served and were getting vulgar and loud. We finally made a comment to another server who attempted to quiet them down. It was pseudo successful, but when you're already on guard during your meal that they guy next to you is going to vomit everywhere...kinda kills the mood. read more
