Whenever you're talking "gyros," some mouth-breathing yinzer will undoubtedly mention the South Side's Mike & Tony's. Mike & Tony this. Mike & Tony that. Mike & Tony hit me with a wiffle ball bat. I spent two whole years after college living in the slums of Pittsburgh's South Side, doing my post-graduate work in hard liquor and fatty foods. Mike and Tony know what they're doing; their gyros are good. Old Village Grill's are perfect, though. Everything's seasoned to perfection. The toppings are fresh. The sauce is great. Old Village is, in my opinion, far superior; maybe the best gyro place in the area. Aside from their gyros, the other food they offer is great, too. Their chicken gyros are - and I never thought I'd say this - just as good as their traditional ones. They also have several vegetarian options that are great. It's a family-owned business. The old guy running the joint is as nice as they come. If I had ONE bone to pick with the place (and I'm really searching here) it's that the gyro is arguably too big. I'll sometimes have to pick a quarter of the meat off of it before I even attempt my first bite. Still, that's not a terrible problem to have. I really wanted to love this place because I was craving a good Greek salad and it was about 30 minutes round trip off the PA turnpike. As other posters have mentioned it's too small to eat in and even if you wanted to sit at the little bar, it's way too hot. I ordered the Greek salad with chicken and hubs ordered chicken Gyro with an order of grape leaves. I would never have ordered a Greek salad made with spring mix but we were already on the road when I discovered this. I didn't think I needed to check on what type of lettuce was used. Also not a Kalamata olive to be found. Many posters mentioned how reasonable it was - this salad would have been 12.99 without the chicken and it was 7.99 additional with. 21.00 for a Greek salad isn't cheap- especially for a takeout place. The salad was feta, red onion, cucumber , tomato and a few little red pepper strips with a pita on the side. No olives- not worth 12.99. The highlight of the dish was the chicken which was very tasty. I should have just ordered the chicken gyro (or just a side of chicken) Hubs chicken gyro had very limited French fries. The food was fabulous, fantastic and huge! I never saw a gyro so big. It could feed 4 people easily. This was a delivery. The gyro salad was huge as well. We ordered stuffed grape leaves and a spinach/feta cheese in pastry. We were so full after attempting to eat our gyros that we had to put them in the fridge without opening them. The people working here are super friendly & helpful. They made a mistake with one of my orders (forgot the tzatziki on the side & no cucumbers), and they completely made a new one and allowed me to keep the extra! That's what I saw in Santorini. [Hummus]: Both hummus that I have tried has been super flavorful & authentic. The classic garlic hummus is out of this world, and I really loved the spiciness & mix of feta in the Spicy Hummus. Pro Tip: order extra pita with the hummus. There's not enough! [Baklava Cheesecake]: Although this isn't exactly authentic, it was delicious. I love baklava, and I love cheesecake. This was a winning combination for me. A flaky top with a creamy inside allowed for the perfect dessert! [Rice Pudding]: I didn't take a picture of this dessert, but it was delicious nonetheless. It's creamy and vanilla-y (Is that a word?!?), and the cinnamon on top pairs perfectly for a more than flavorful dessert. They always have a special of 2 for $6. Perfect for eating one now & saving one for lunch tomorrow! [Crab Cake Gyro]: For Lenten, they have specials, and this one did not disappoint. Gyros portions are large- beware! My husband can usually eat 2 gyros and fries but the meal was so big he couldn't finish it. The fries are seasoned and so good too. I went and placed order for takeout (there really isn't space for dine in except a counter and couple stools) so food was hot and fresh when I got home. I also brought home some baklava, baklava cheesecake and grape leaves. There's some items ready made in the case like dessert, grape leaves and hummus. Great spot for relatively cheap Greek food! Some of the items are a little overpriced, but most are great! I have tried both the tiropita, spanakopita, and chicken souvlaki. Everything has been tasty, but the portions for the chicken vs pastries are vastly different! Both the tiropita and spanakopita are quite large. There is a special where you can get 2 of the same pastry for $5. They are quite buttery and moist on the inside, which I like. However, there is also a lot of phyllo dough on top, which made it crunchy, but did not add much flavor. On the other hand, the souvlaki is extremely small! It's just a piece of chicken slightly larger than the size of my index finger. It is grilled well, though, and has a nice charred flavor. But for $4.50? Well, you could almost get a while rotisserie chicken for that price! All in all, this is a pretty good Greek spot in Penn Hills. There aren't many other places in the area serving this cuisine, so check it out. It's small and quaint on the inside, but has some pretty decent food. read more

I decided to try here for lunch today and I was not disappointed. The lady at the front was very sweet and informative helping me pick what to get. I settled on the gyro combo which comes with fries and your choice of a drink. The amount of food i got for $11 was insane!! The gyro is loaded with fresh, hot meat, red onions and the sauce but I got feta with mine too. I waited about 10 minutes from my order (made it there, got my food and made it home before my lunch break was over) and it came out nice and hot. Update : 9-2018 I love gyros and I have always liked Old Village Grill ! Today was a disappointment :( Gyro meat was cold, nothing worse than cold meat. They keep it in a chafing dish with a cover lid after shaving from the cone. There was a miss communication with the clerk and the cook, we asked that they separate the meat and the sauce for a gyro to go - we received they gyro built with gyro sauce on the meat :(. We are taking this restaurant off the rotation list for a bit !! read more

We just moved here from california. Our favorite was to always get a good gyro from somewhere and have lunch with our kiddo. When we walked in we were immediately greeted with smiles. The meat portions are large with more than enough meat for two gyros. Their options for gyros include (Authentic) a mixture of lamb and beef, (Souvlaki) marinated skewed pork and Chicken. They also offer greek salads, Hummus, Dolmage (stuffed grape leaves), Spanakopita (Fillo dough stuffed with Spinach and Feta cheese and Tiropita (Fillo dough stuffed with a blend of cheeses. Growing up in Buffalo, every diner was a greek diner. You could always gt souvlaki and gyros. When I moved to Pittsburgh I was shocked to learn this was a regional thing. I had no idea good greek food would be so hard to find in Pittsburgh! There are gyros everywhere but not as many options for souvlaki, grape leaves or other treats. I learned of Old Village Grill when I had their baklava at a party I was at. The hostess mentioned it was from a new(ish) greek place in Penn Hills. I was intrigued so I went to check it out the next day. The menu is fairly small, but that is fine because everything they do they do extremely well. You can get entrees (which include Gyro, grilled chicken or souvlaki) on their own or as part of a combo with fries and a salad. They also have sides like grape leaves, spanakopita and hummus. Gyro portions are extremely large and the meat is very tasty and tender. But whatever you order, you won't be disappointed. Everything is fresh and flavored and spiced wonderfully. Inside there are a few tables for dine in, but it is mostly a take out venture. Your best bet is to call ahead to avoid a wait, but even walking in the wait time isn't that bad. Check for coupons as there have been some in the Clipper Magazine. They also have a loyalty card which is punched every time you buy a Gyro. The have a sign on the door asking you to wear a mask. I went back to the car and got one to respect it and no one inside was wearing one. Worse, they treated me like I should no be in there. The Gyro was not even close to what we have gotten before. I am not sure it it is due to a decline in quality or the preparation of the rude lady who prepared it. After reading several of these reviews, the poor reviews all mentioned the meat being cold, one even speculated the meat temp was below health department allowable temp which is 135-140 F. Let me tell you this...they are right. I've eaten there about once or twice a month since they opened, food was great. In the past year it has gone down hill. We ate there in early January then about six weeks later. This most recent time, we had Gyro's...about 16-24 hours later, I was up several times during the night with the skids. She had the same issues about the same time frame. I started to think and that time in January, the same thing happened, middle of the night skids and ill feeling. So I did some looking into OVG on the health department web site and found they have been found in violation several times for the meat being below temp.....this is the meat on the skewer......seems they shut the gas off when slow which allows the meat to go from 135-140 down to room temp which just happens to be the prime temp for food poisoning bacteria to form. The report said this is a regular issue. I'm done with OVG....Hope you do better. *HIGH RISK*** -Tiropita (feta and ricotta) held in the hot holding cabinet measured 109F. Product stored here greater than 4 hours. Product discarded. -Gyro meat held on roasting spit measured 65F (edge) and 62F(center). Unit turned off. PIC stated that units are turned off during non-peak times. PIC advised of proper hot holding temperature of 135F. Unit turned back on. Surprised! I wouldn't have eaten gyros from a place in Penn Hills but my friends dragged me in. I would be missing out on the best gyros in the city! Let me just say I left stuffed. Their basic gyro and fries meal is more than enough to fill you up and it's only $8! It was delicious and the gyro sauce was fresh and clean tasting. This is my first time eating here :) I heard around town that this place had awesome gyros so decided to give it a try! Literally I usually eat a gyro once a year mainly at the Oakmont Greek Food Festival due to I could never find a good gyro else where. Well now I have! I ordered the Hercules Gyro which is huge the thing can easily feed 2 maybe 3 people it's loaded with big slices of meat along with fries that have a nice seasoned zing to them (not hot at all). Trust me I'm not dainty girl when it comes to digging in with my hands and getting messy to eat but I had to eat this with a fork and knife bc it was so loaded I couldn't even pick it up! The flavoring was very distinct it has the same ole "gyro" fast but there is something more to it that makes it unique and you can tell it's home made from a family recipe. I also ordered a spanicopita ( hope I spelled it right ) it had a nice flaky crust along with a strong spinach flavor. Cooked very good but nothing to lnow me away. I also notice do they have other goodies there that I will most defined to be trying in the future! The customer service is lovely. They always smile and are very welcoming to everyone who comes in. The gyros are as close to Greece as you can get without getting on a plane. There's occasions where you get meat chunks instead of the shaved meat from the gyro cone but I understand that it's what you get when you reach the end of the cone and can't shave anymore. I wish I saw the owner more but I like the staff he has! I also wish there were frappes and soup more often, but as for the food itself it's quite delicious. My favorite is the chocolate baklava cheesecake. The fries are great when they're crispy but you have to say so when you order because different cooks working cook them differently. It's kind of like implementing their own style on the food. Another to note Is that they are very accommodating to your preferences. However it is a small establishment so if you have allergies to something specific that's in the restaurant I doubt they can guarantee that there isn't some MINOR cross contamination.
