Ryan is right... the avenue as we all used to know it is dead. As soon as I walked in and heard soft jazz playing out of the blown out audio equipment that I've listened to countless Patriots and Bruins games through, I knew it was long gone. $3 bud light drafts? No pitchers? Tiny burgers not served with fries? (I guess you need to itemize your orders now...) and where did the great staff that used to work here go? And why are there only 4 TVs in the hole place? And why are we listening to shitty ass John Mayer instead of Jerry Remy telling us why Dice K is melting down? The Avenue has changed. Everything that made it awesome is now gone. I've been going here since 2003 back when they had $1 drafts, and I've stuck with them even when the dreaded $2 drafts hit (at least there were towers). I've watched the sox and celtics win championships here. I have a fantasy football league that was named after this place. And now it's all gone. If you want to go chat softly while sitting in the re-upholstered tall bar stools while listening to shitty music while paying too much for drinks in a dive bar that got a paint job, this is your place. But if you want to drink lots of cheap beer with your buddies while watchiing Boston sports on a gazillion big screen TVs while surrounded by like wise sports fans, you need to look elsewhere.... My fiance started crying on the way home when she realized that an era had come and gone. I'm now at home doing the same. Maybe some beer will help ease the pain... goodbye, old friend. read more

I knew there was a reason I never went to the Avenue while I was an undergrad at BU. No one hangs out here, and the customer service is as shoddy as the facade of the building. Allow me to share a quick story with you. I walked into the Avenue for the first time last night. It was a Saturday night and my college friends and I were basically the only patrons there. I am 23 years old, but their "bouncer" confiscated my state issued ID card 10 minutes after I had already been granted access to the bar. He handed it to the bartender because he suspected me of being under age. That's all fine and good; the man was just trying to do his job. But even after I presented 3 OTHER FORMS of valid identification, the bartender refused to give me my ID back. He then explained that I had to call the Boston Police Department if I wanted to get it back- which I did. Next, after 10 minutes of WATCHING ME STAND AT THE BAR AND DRINK ANYWAY (wtf?), the bartender pulled me aside and said that the Police had called and wouldn't be there for another hour. As a favor, he would give me my ID back if I promised to leave. "Great", I said. "Your bar is boring, and isn't that how this whole situation is supposed to work anyway?" So I leave the bar and guess who is waiting outside? THE BOSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT- PUNCTUAL AS EVER. I can only deduce that the bartender faked his BPD phone conversation because he was too embarrassed to acknowledge his mistake. As you can imagine, this made for a pretty comical and confusing conversation with the two police officers who definitely had more important things to be taking care of. The entire situation was just so poorly managed and bizarre that it made what would have been an already bad experience terrible. I will never go back, and if you like to have fun I advise you find another bar in Allston. read more

It's grungy. It's dirty. Its storefront is certainly not fancy or impressive by any means. But they have cheap beer and a decent selection for a sports-divey bar hybrid. But really I come here for the $2 (formerly $1) burgers on Monday. The rest of their burgers on the menu are to die for as well (I forgot what it's called, but my preferred one has crispy fried onion bits in it. If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will). I love cheap beer. I'd almost say I love it more than the woman who tore my heart out and destroyed my naivete, innocence and optimistic world view, the family that disowned me, the college I went to four years that taught me to hate pointless sports affiliations, the God I never found- But The Avenue really drains me. Its a wood paneled rectangular place with a small square dining room attached to the front with one half of the perimeter of the dining area glass to see the T go by. The crowd just blows (a combo of college kids, college grads who miss hanging out with college kids, sports loving people who never went to college, maybe a few decent older couples or guys), the bar tenders are unfriendly and uninterested in you unless you got a cute face and some nice "titays", the waitress are quite nice though. The cover is usually low if existent (3-5 dollars) and all bud products really are just one single dollar (making up for the cover quickly). The food is the standard sports bar fare. The bathroom is a single lockable door so if your friends drag you there and your into illicit drug use to alleviate social situations that dont fit into you own paradigm I guess you have that option. Although, if you get there early in the day and just want to pre-game for a few, go for it. But it does start filling up in the afternoons.. Its also rather small, so when it is packed, its really packed. My rule of thumb is if you cant find a stool at the bar, you've showed up too late. read more

We went for the first round of the NHL eastern confirm finals and they were playing dispatch's greatest hits on repeat. We asked for game sound and they said they were going for a different vibe, more conversations, less fun. The old avenue is dead and gone. If your looking for a trendy lounge, Brighton now has one. Having lived across the street for 2 years, I am not gonna lie. I judged the avenue hardcore based on the outside. Aka it's something you would expect in Allston, and would definitely expect the hipster locals to go to, which is probably true. However, once walking in my thoughts changed! I loved it! The funky fun environment is masquered by the sketchy outside. Walker bys beware... Go inside!! They have a great bar, and a small intimate seating area that feels like a diner. The decor was very interesting and funky... I really liked it. The best part and most underrated thing about the avenue? Is the $2 burgers on Mondays!! The burgers are delicious (do not taste like $2) and my favorite favorite favorite most obsessed thing and the reason I will now be a regular... Is the sweet potato tater tots!! The Avenue is right across the street from my apartment, and it's definitely one of my new go to spots for munchies or whenever I'm too lazy to cook. The $2 burger is surprisingly good. The meat patty isn't your regular generic kind, and the burger buns are lightly fried (and a little on the sweet side!). I don't even know where to begin. Not only was the service some of the worst my wife and I have ever experienced, but the food was also disgusting. The bouncer was unnecessarily rude, and gave us trouble at the door, mind you we are both in our 30s. The drinks took over 25 minutes to arrive, and don't even get me started on the food, we placed our orders around 8:45 and didn't receive our food until 10:00. I got a burger and my wife got a veggie burger. I genuinely believe my 6 month old daughter could have made a better meal if she were the chef. We hired a baby sitter, just so we could have a peaceful date night, but due to our own mistake in choosing this restaurant (if you can even call it that) the night was ruined. read more

Classic divey bar with a cheap menu. I'd get the burger with a sunny side up egg from here any day. The bar spans most of the restaurant, so this is the perfect spot to watch the games or take someone out on for a date. This place is a gem, and should be a frequent visit by any Allston peep. Don't be fooled by the exterior of the building. Sure, this place is nestled amongst the college crowd, but there is a lot of potential here. The neon bar signs and bright blue awning makes it stick out, but not necessarily in a great way. (It looks like something straight out of the 80s, so I wasn't sure if I needed acid washed jeans, a perm, and a boombox with an Eddie Money cassette). We came here to support two friends for their "Burger Meat-Up" in which we could sample burgers, drink a few beers, and hang out with friends. The inside of the building is much bigger than what it looks on the outside. The exposed brick and gastropup-looking bar gives it a more sophisticated look. The beer is list is expansive and it's more than just your Bud and Natty Light lineup. Lots of microbrews, too. We sampled a few of the burgers. The burgers were 4 oz. apiece and came on a toasted roll. I thought they were great. They are cooked quickly and they come out hot. I prefer the little 4 oz. patties (think In-n-Out) over the monstrous ones like many other restaurants. I tried the bacon cheeseburger and the animalized burger. The special sauce served with the animalized burger wasn't memorable, but not bad. We shared a basket of sweet potato tots and fries at our table. I don't care if they are homemade or not, but they were cooked to perfection and not one fry was soggy. I'll sum this review up with this last and final thought: maple-bacon ketchup. I came in for $1 burger Monday, and I have to admit that my expectations were pretty low. I should not have sold The Avenue short - those $1 burgers tasted like $6 burgers (at least)! So it's a little misleading, because $1 is for your basic burger, and add one are another dollar each. But my server helped me work it, and I still got an amazing burger for like $4. Thanks to the large size and diverse tastes of my party (not to mention the frequency with which I've visited this establishment), i have been able to sample all of the sides. Sweet potato tots? Yes. Fried pickles. Double yes. Add to that a ton of beers on tap, cheap prices on bottles... And you've got a great spot for some bar grub. read more

This place looks awful from the outside. I honestly thought it was out of business for the first 6 mos or so that I've lived here (a block away). The inside, however, looks great. My boyfriend, a die-hard Eagles fan that recently re-located to MA, found it by accident as he wandered the Allston streets looking for a bar that would show the Eagles game (the Patriots were playing at the same time, and every other bar laughed in his face). The Avenue welcomed him right in - there was even another Eagles fan. The food is really good, especially for the (dirt-cheap) price. Great selection of beer. I used to pass by the place all the time and thought it looked kinda small and dingy and that a $2 burger must not be very good. But I shouldn't of judged this book by its cover! The place is actually way bigger on the inside and the $2 burger special (after 10pm daily or all day Monday) is pretty good! It has a toasted buttered bun, special sauce, lettuce, tomato, and patty that doesn't seem to be a generic frozen circular brick. There's a nice selection of beer on tap and a bar area. There was a five year period where The Ave. was my spot. My friends and I would come here two to three times a week. The main attraction was the $1 draft beers. It turns a $20 evening into quite the blur. The food is surprisingly decent too... the appetizer sampler is great for all your favorite bar app needs. The real diamond in the rough was the steak & cheese. I suggest you order it with BBQ sauce and extra cheese, you won't regret it. The staff is great as well... great sense of humor, laid back group that never let your glass go dry. If I had a complaint about The Ave. it would have to be the calamari. One of their watresses divulged to me the "secret" of the "secret sauce". Let's just say it's pure deliciousness of mayo-y goodness, a kick from a rooster friend of mine made of chile pepper, and some other spice found in a pantry. (Don't worry - the sauce is not at all spicy by any means.) I usually get this with of their onion rings, which is actually really good! You can add any number of toppings as you'd like for a price per topping. You do however have to get a drink with their specials. They have a decent selection of beers on tap to satisfy any preference of beer you like all at a very decent price $4-$7 per pint. As for the rest of the menu, their selection of burgers and fried pub-fare all sound delicious, too! read more

This place has really, really gotten their act together. I used to live in Allston about five years ago, and the Avenue was just a dive bar my roommates would hit up on the way to something bigger and better. I've since started dropping by here again whenever I visit the Allston area, and hooly schnikies have they improved. Great beer selection (current favorite is Golden Monkey), affordable, delicious food, nice variety of appetizers, tons of space, decent noise level... the Av is just really spot-on across the board. Every time I meet someone here, I have a good time. I'd recommend the fried pickles, the burgers, the onion rings, and the nachos. The mozzarella sticks are nothing special, but not bad. Honestly, I haven't tried anything here I didn't like. If you haven't checked this place out in a few years, it is absolutely worth another shot. I am mighty impressed. read more

If The Ave had kept the dollar beers, they would have made me think twice about giving them another star. Having bumped bud and bud light up to $1.50 (still not bad), I can't pretend that this bar is any more than a dive. I've had the wings. they're fine and you can get them for 25 cents from 5-7 during the week. Not a bad little happy hour for cheap. Also a good place to pre-game and get ready to upgrade to a better bar as your main destination. Know that this place closes at 1, so many of the last-callers wind up going down the street to Our House or around the corner to Wonder Bar, depending on the scene they're looking for. Also, there is a $15 minimum on cards, so get ready to crush some beers if you start a tab. Oh and it's virtually impossible to pick girls up here. It's a long narrow corridor and usually a sausage fest. I could see watching a game here or taking advantage of the deals, but that's about it. read more

Cheapest draft I think is the $4 Yingling. The Ave has a great beer selection, usually ~15 at $5 with a couple up in the $6-$6.50 range. Burgers are dynamite, and no question you better be ordering a Cry Baby, I'm not lying when I say its an In & Out burger out here on the East Coast, take that as you will. $2 burger specials all Monday, and every night after 10.00 (Plain Jane, toppings are extra but fair). Let that sink in. $2. These aren't just decent burgers, they are GREAT burgers at an untouchable price, well, save for the old $1 burger special! Tots are dynamite, they make a maple ketchup in house which is a real treat, and the rest of the bar snacks are delicious too (fried pickles 1010). The waitresses and bar staff are very prompt, friendly, and it is clear they enjoy being there which makes service a million times better. Great spot to catch a game owing to the deluge of TVs, they do Monday night Raw (wrestling) which is way more fun than it sounds with a crowd of folks. Oh! And there is a great spot to get blinding drunk and play darts in the basement - much much nicer down there after a recent revamp. read more

Seems like a chill bar area that usually has a decent amount of people in there . I come here for the late night takeout. I have gotten food here as late as almost 2am. The wings are great and so is the BBQ burger . To order takeout you have to order on their website online but it is always ready within 20 minutes . I've been to The Avenue twice in the past four days. My friend and I work nights, so we hit this place around 1:15 AM for some post-work beers and food. I had never been there before, but was immediately impressed by their extensive beer selection. I went with an old faithful (some Allagash White), which was delicious. You could tell they clean their tap lines really well. We also ordered food, which the bartender told us took over 30 minutes to come out. My friend and I hadn't even noticed, but Good Guy Bartender comped our second round of drinks anyway. It took us a while to drink that round, because we were starving and basically stuffing our faces; Good Guy Bartender then let us stay after close and nurse our beers. So, in short, fantastic beer selection, good cheap food, and a great staff - the trifecta of bar perfection. Oh! And apparently they have darts somewhere in the basement. We'll be checking that out the next time we go. read more

Though on Sundays they have $.35 wings, which are pretty good - my friend and I ordered 12 wings and entrees, after eating 6 I was already full. Haha, I guess my appetite is getting smaller. Probably the best thing I've seen where girls who should have probably just gone straight to Wonder Bar, start trying to open up space in the middle of the floor at The Ave to have a dance floor. Definitely a college bar, and I'm no longer a college student. This is a friend's "home" bar, so I met him here after dinner out. A $5 cover for a dive bar seems kinda ridiculous, and the bartender basically ignored me for 10 minutes, despite the fact that I was apparently sitting with a regular. Finally, my friend ended up ordering a watery $1.50 beer for me. Whatev. I get that bars are crowded. I spend a fair amount of time in them myself. But I shouldn't have been elbowed in the head, reached over, and practically groped as many times as I was. Also, when you're pouring 21 shots, maybe you should set them up in front of the people who ordered them, instead of some innocent bystanders. I hit up The Ave last night before a hip-hop show with the main goal of getting some cheap grub and a buzz off cheap beer. They definitely have the cheap beer, as I got 2 or 3 huge mugs of it (the size of 2 pints) for only $3.50 a pop, but what surprised me the most (and this isn't the first time, which is why I am finally writing this review) is how good their food is! I had the steak quesadilla last night. Holy crap. HUGE quesadilla with perfectly melted cheese, crispy-fried tortillas, huge chunks off steak, peppers, onions, salsa, sour cream, pico de gallo OMGGGGG. And lots of beans rice on the side. And I've tried their other food too and it's all really good. Add in a gift certificate from restaurant.com and you may just have yourself the best deal in Allston... read more

$2 burgers that just won't quit. (Monday nights.) Yes it's more than that for extra toppings but it's still a cheap burger and they stand up. Fries are decent. Sweet potato tots are crispy, hot, and worth getting. I also split a plate of loaded nachos with someone, but there were plenty to share around with the group. Could have used more jalapenos but everything could use more jalapenos in my opinion so I may be biased here. Beer is reasonably priced, not the cheapest, but not as expensive as some other bars in the area. I'd say $6 range on average here. They have cider on tap too, which is always a plus in my book. The space is a little strange on the inside but this place is a bit divey anyway, so just don't expect luxe atmosphere and you'll be fine. Everything seemed clean and the waitress was helpful and patient. They may deserve more stars. I will go back and see. read more

Really I would only come here if you can beat the ridiculous $5 cover or if you are going to spend enough time there and drink enough $1 drafts to outweigh the cost of said cover. Really its not worth coming here if its crowded, you really won't talk to anyone other than the people you came with, the space just isn't conducive to it. If you are looking to go out, be social and meet people there are better bars for that in the area. Mediocre, if overpriced food isn't helping the cause either. However, if you can get there between 4-7 their 25 cent wings are decent and that is usually a time to beat the cover. Also a great place to stop by for a quick pint and a bite on a lazy afternoon, its usually very quiet with just the regulars around. If you are there when it is busy, the waitresses are actually fantastic, really on top of their game. Considering how busy this place can get on a Friday or Saturday night I've never had to wait around or search for a waitress to get a fresh $1 Molson. read more

Came here after reading all the reviews and was a bit disappointed. For eats, we ordered the now $2 burger (the avenue burger), sweet potato tots, wings (in the mind eraser and buffalo sauces), and fries. The burger was just ok - definitely no tasty burger, but good for the price. The sweet potato tots tasted burnt and was almost inedible. The wings were ok...the mind eraser sauce is made with ghost peppers and was pretty delicious, but as for the wing itself - I think Harry's fries up a better wing. The fries were good...definitely better than the tots. As for drinks, I had the blueberry beer and my boyfriend had the allagash white and the shock top belgian white. He liked both of his beers, but my blueberry beer was just okay. The blueberry taste was really faint - the blueberry beer is a million times better at Harry's. Plus at Harry's they put real blueberries in your beer and the foam has blueberry bits in it. Call me snooty, but I like a bit of presentation and an actual blueberry taste to my blueberry beer. read more
