We came here before our bike ride from Coronado to Imperial Beach. My friends and I stopped in here for a drink and a bite on a Monday afternoon. I didn't expect a lot of people here on a Monday but it was decently occupied. We sat down at the outdoor bar (Nighthawk) and each got a different cocktail. I ordered something from the menu and recommended by the bartender. It was OK but nothing to sing home about. And, we got several items of food from the menu. Calamari - This was like any calamari you would get at a bar and grill. It was good but nothing special. Bucatini - We were surprised at how small the portion was for this pasta considering the ingredients are inexpensive...yet the menu price did not reflect either of the observations. Beet and Goat Cheese - This thing was loaded in BEETS....if you like beets this item will not disappoint you. I am not a fan of beets but my friend was looking for something refreshing. Greek Salad - Again nothing special but just an ordinary Greek Salad. The decor is nothing short of A LOT and a bit gaudy just like the Lafayette Hotel. There is a lot to look at and that includes the outfits the female bartenders and servers were wearing. I felt bad for them with what looked like velvet or extremely non-breathable material in the humid summer heat and working outside with not AC. Bartenders were nice and attentive when we first sat down but shortly went MIA as more people sat down at the bar. This probably looks cooler at night with tiki torches lit and sexxy ambiance which I may come back again for. The drinks and menu items were not worth coming back for unfortunately. My review comes from a dining experience we had with a friend who was in town visiting. My husband and I are such fans of LaFayette, so when we found that The Baby Grand opened we knew we had to pay a visit. We booked a reservation for 3 and ended up using the valet since we didn't want to busy ourselves with trying to find street parking during a busy summer afternoon on Coronado. I will say, the valet is cash only when we went, so make sure you have some handy if you choose to use it. We were greeted and seated right away. We love the similar vibe and aesthetic of LaFayette here. The place operates as a smaller hotel and bar than the LaFayette, so be prepared to not have as many amenities and features that LaFayette has. If you're curious, just check their website or socials to see for yourself. We knew this upon booking for lunch, and to be honest, we really enjoyed the smaller more intimate feel. We went during the afternoon, so I can only imagine the vibe at night. Our waiter greeted us right away and had some great recommendations for drinks and food and both did not disappoint. Not sure what others have experienced, but our visit was wonderful. The menu features Mediterranean fusion dishes. We ordered their cauliflower, pita and hummus, and the lamb to share. All of it was deeply flavorful and every bite was amazing. Service continued to be top-notch. There was even a moment I felt cold, and our waiter brought me a blanket from the hotel! As someone who has visited The Lafayette, I was really excited to visit The Baby Grand. Unfortunately, I won't be returning here. First, the valet is $18 which is so expensive. However, we know how busy Coronado is on a Saturday in June, so we decided to bite. The decor is great, just like The Lafayette. However, this establishment is a small fraction of what The Lafayette is like. I was hoping to see similar amenities, such as a bowling alley, multiple restaurants, a pool, a jazz club, etc. The only things this place has is hotel rooms, bars and a large dining area. That was pretty disappointing. There was a bit of a long wait for us to get a drink at the bar. However, a bartender stopped to ask me if I had questions about the menu, which was really nice. Besides that, the overall vibes from the bar staff were really low. I enjoyed a glass of Rose and my bf liked his Moscow Mule. There aren't sinks at the bathroom, or we couldn't find them. My stall was out of toilet paper. All in all, it's a pretty place with nice decor, but it will cost you a pretty penny. Don't expect much beyond the bars and restaurant. read more

I was wowed by the decor this place is truly beautiful, as we entered there is a full bar to the right of us first come first serve they don't accept reservations for that. To the left of us was the restaurant, reservations are encouraged this place was pretty busy on a weekday I can't imagine what the weekend looks like. You're free to roam around and sit by the lagoon which is beautiful or grab a drink at the bar. Visual dopamine to the max! So much symbology behind every detail of this fabulous hotel/bar/restaurant. What an oasis of pure colorful joy filled with different patterns, shapes, fun and fastuous items. As a fan of design and colors, and everything done by the hospitality group behind The Baby Grand, I find this hotel as a breeze of modern, maximalist and charm opposed to the sometimes rancid and predictable places in Coronado. While I value the design and greenery and beautiful velvet uniforms the most, I enjoyed very much so friendly everyone working there was. What a great and beautiful crew! I liked that for this first time my friend and I only wanted to get our capuccinos and we got them at the bar with the most luxurious looking ambiance (and fun factor, like when you finish your coffee the face of what it seems to be a Greek philosopher pops up from the cup like bathing in the foam. Very cool. The 'pool' area is retro chic and a wink to its big sister Lafayette hotel. Food will have to wait for another day but we loved all we saw and we also met a 70 year old lady celebrating her gorgeousness there. Such a relaxing place open conversations up. I'm going to give the baby Grand Hotel and NightHawk restaurant three positive traits And three negative traits So the positive part is that the waitresses were very, very sweet. Also, the food is pretty darn good The third positive point is that this place is absolutely beautiful Now sadly, the negative things. So the first thing is, I nicely dropped off my party at 12:30 PM for lunch and I went to Park It took me almost 1 hour to park Then when I did park across the street underground at chipotle it cost $40 for two hours So the sad part of that is, we won't be coming back here and we're locals, which is very sad So then it's just lunchtime, but it's so loud in here with the music and the beautiful waterfalls and everything that we are yelling to try to talk or hear one another, which is generally annoying. To add to the noise, someone / workers are drilling near the bar. So I guess we're just leaving. Also, this is San Diego a Millitary town where people don't have a ton of money but I think the place is way way overpriced for instance The 14 day dry age tomahawk steak 36 ounce is $190. It is shareable but most San Diego people don't spend that much at lunch. :-( Oh, and lastly, the ladies's bathroom is only 1 stall for one person and it's really really dark and awful. so I guess if you already know about it to begin with it's not so bad. Review is more for the general bar area less of the actual hotel itself. Overall don't come for food or drinks just walk around for the ambiance. Came Saturday evening around 6 pm knowing it would probably be a little more busy given it's a weekend. Overall 2 drinks took almost 30 mins to get and the drinks tasted like it had no alcohol in it and this is coming from someone who is VERY lightweight. Person who took my order immediately left after I closed out the tab and I couldn't find him. When he finally came back all he was doing was bussing. One person was making drinks for the entire bar area and the restaurant which is crazy. I asked the person who helped me worried they might've forgotten and he gave a sassy response. To top it off a couple who ordered 15 mins after me got their drinks before me and when I finally was able to talk to the person who's making all the drinks he says "Sorry I didn't take your order so I didn't know those were your drinks". Personally a bad excuse cause that's not how a bar should work anyway if you're delegating all cocktail making to one person. I have also been to the speakeasy Fallen Empire which is reservation only. I got the tequila & mezcal drink which personally, fell short for me. I'm a big fan of the Lafayette Hotel over on El Cajon Blvd and so I had high expectations for this new hotel/restaurant/bar which is owned and operated by the same people. My initial impression was that the space was architecturally crowded/busy and could have used a central open space for hanging out. There's a small decorative pool which would have been a perfect space for this. The overall vibe is Middle Eastern meets Pirates of the Caribbean. Some of it really works well like the opulent, tented bar and the little speakeasy room. Some of it looks gimmicky. It will be interesting to see what the more local/family-oriented crowd thinks about it once the influencers are gone. We were there on opening night and all of us expected hiccups. We got a few. Some menu items weren't available. Some basic non-alcoholic drink options (like ice tea) just didn't exist. The food was a mixed bag. The mezze appetizer was good and the waiter brought us some extra pita bread. The French fries were terrific. The cauliflower was under-seasoned and bland. I ordered the chicken skewer plate and didn't eat most of it. The chicken pieces were tiny and had a very odd texture. The accompanying vegetables and spicy green sauce (kind of like a chimichuri) were terrific! I'd say give them a few weeks to smooth out the kitchen and wait service. I know they're trying to be a cool hotel in Coronado , like their sister property, the Lafayette... This hotel needs a lot of work. Overcrowded and understaffed. They need security to limit. Vibes and atmosphere is 11 out of 10. Such a cool spot. But the service is one of the most atrocious I have experienced in San Diego. In 3 hours, we saw our waiter maybe twice. And every time I had to chase him down, he continually tried to drop and RUN. We managed 2 drinks, you can maybe get one an hour if you are lucky. We walked up to the bar by the end. Again, stunning spot. The food is good, the shrimp skewers were cooked perfectly, but good luck if you need a side or ask for anything during the meal. It won't come. The salmon crudo smelled sooooo fishy. I was hoping it was just my sensitive smell, but it was not- it was VERY fishy in taste too. Not fresh at all. Overall the food was good. Was so excited to visit for my birthday -- my boyfriend and I frequent the Lafayette and couldn't wait for this to open. It comes as no surprise that the decor and ambiance was everything we'd expected. Truly gorgeous! However, the service truly lacked -- the valet attendants were pretentious, disconnected, and quite cold. Overall, I just wasn't impressed with the customer service as a whole. Maybe this is just a timing issue, as it was busy and it just opened. The Lafayette truly has the ambiance and service on lock. I hope the BG can improve in this area. read more

The reason I'm giving this place five stars is because of charity! She was absolutely amazing. She made us the best drinks ever we absolutely loved her. Without her hospitality, we would not have had that great of time to be honest I felt so bad for the employees having to wear those velvet blazers they literally were sweating and I just felt so bad for them. The decor and style is awesome. So fun and exactly what I came for. Me and my girlfriend love the Lafayette and visit there frequently so we were looking forward to checking out Baby Grand. The robes, the rooms, the outdoor seating area, the little touches and details, so beautiful. But the service holy moly is horrific. I was sitting at the bar and this older gentlemen next to me couldn't take it anymore and stormed out and honestly I didn't blame him. When I pulled up in the car to check in, the valet just stood there looking confused. And then when we finally got the bags out the car and went to check in, I had to be ask "So....WHERES THE ENTRANCE? And they again looked at us like we were nuts. Then we find the door to the lobby and another gentlemen im assuming a bar manager? was standing right in front of the door talking some ladies ear off. And then we just stood there together for a minute before I the bar manager finally recognized us and moved out the way after asking "oh are you checking in" YES WE ARE THATS WHY WE HAVE ALL THESE BAGS. Once we checked in with the ladies at the front desk, they were great. Really hospitable. But then after going to our rooms and getting a couple drinks at the bar and dealing with bartenders, it's just not the standard of service you experience at the Lafayette. Lafayette is so welcoming and it really just feels like a real customer experience, instead of here where I felt like I was being judged the whole time for no reason. We didn't plan on going, but we walked in on 5/16 (Saturday) and I can tell the atmosphere was alive. We went towards the nearest bar and waited for a seat to open up and was able to sit at the bar. Right off the bat you can tell it is extremely busy and the bartenders and wait staff are doing what they can to stay on pace. We ordered our first drinks and just kept vibing with two of their bartenders, Austin and Ewan, solid dudes that kept it professional, exciting and contributed to our overall experience. Yes they had some items that were available as to be expected on their 2nd day opening but they didn't let that detail them from making sure we had an amazing experience. Solid teamwork between the two and attentive to the whole bar. I'd definitely come back to say hello to Austin and Ewan. I'll post some pics of the drinks we had. A must try is "Late Summer Swim" and "Salt Talk" was great also. I'll have to go back and experience the food and the speakeasies. read more

Again $20 cocktails and 30+ minute waits with 1 bartender taking care of 50 bar guests, and for some reason 3 more people inside the bar taking orders but not cant makie drinks? Cause they dont have a bartenders license ? . No manager in sight, extra terrible service, and the bar looked completely unprepared for a busy Saturday night. Watching dirty dishes pile up all evening summed up the experience. Won't be back until they get their sh**+ together.
