The view from "the back deck" is one of the best in the beach and the atmosphere is overall super chill and fun, but service wasn't awesome. It took a very long time for the bartender to even acknowledge my friend and I to order a drink. In her defense, she was the only bartender servicing the whole restaurant. Their menu stated Bloody Mary's and Mimosas are $4.50 on Sunday's. For that reason alone I wanted a mimosa. My friend was served this teeny "baby" mimosa, not in a regular cup like the other drinks, and charged $6.15 for it. She brought to the bartender's attention that the menu states the mimosa should be $4.50 (especially because it was super tiny), and the bartender replied that it's super hard to void a transaction and she would get back to her (?). I then ordered a mimosa thinking of course it would be $4.50, now that it was brought to her attention, and my baby mimosa was also $6.15. I brought this to the bartender's attention, and she reluctantly provided my friend and I one swig of champagne and orange juice in the mini-cup and apologized for the smaller portion ....???!!!! Not impressed. Needless to say, we weren't pressed to stay and order any more drinks or food. read more

Good food and drinks. Although the menu is on the small size you will not be disappointed. Its a DECK plan and simple. Great for relaxing and view of bay; in the day or the night. So you can imagine it's casual and so is the fare. Sometimes in season you may have a slight wait. It is worth the wait. Just remember you are not going to a restaurant that serves a full range. You are going for good lighter food. Example would be Fish Tacos, Seafood Plater or Sliders. read more

The Back Deck was a wonderful Saturday night experience. We sat on right in the sun on the patio and had the most amazing cocktails. The cocktails were so good and they were under $, which is rare. The food was pretty good - I was a little bit disappointed there weren't more "seafood" (crab cakes, lobster, etc.) options. I did not eat from the raw bar, but I definitely will next time. We were even allowed to have our puppy on the deck! Great spot. read more

Looking for a Nosh last Friday and a cold drink we headed down shore drive our initial destination was packed for March Madness so we yelped this place and decided to give it a shot, you pass though a small fish shop/ general store kinda cool actually and out the back door to one of the cooler looking bars in the area with a million dollar view of the Lynnhaven. We had a seat at the bar and 10 minutes passed with out a greeting of any sort we were close to walking out when the Bartender came back around and asked if we were with the wedding party uhhhh no and asked if they were closed for a private party since they weren't i inquired what was on tap? Either she was new to the restaurant or as a bartender but did not know and had know list seeing a dogfish tap i believe i went for that. My wifes orange crush was like watery orange juice guess not everyone can do a good crush. The food however was a delite we had the crab dip and a dozen raw oysters, the oysters we plump and juicy and fresh, the crab dip with pita toast was a tasty treat little cool in the center but good non the less! We will try this place again, it was a little uncomfortable to listen to wedding speeches when we were not there for that party, but all seemed to be having a good time and we were not the only ones not with the party. Absolutely atrocious service. We called ahead and were told it was first come first serve, but that there was plenty of space. We arrived and the only two open seats were at the bay-facing facing bar, which was covered in water bugs. We ordered a beer and a glass of wine, which took about 15 minutes to get to us, and four tacos, which never arrived. We then moved to a nearby table to avoid the bugs (after informing the bartender), and cleared it off from the previous party after sitting there for about 10 minutes with no wait staff coming by. We ordered another round, which also never arrived. A waitress wandered by looking for someone who ordered a plate of tacos (about 45 minutes after we ordered), and we told her we'd been waiting on food, so she handed us these tacos that had been clearly destined for someone else. After being at Back Deck for 1 hr and 15 minutes, and never being checked on, or served, by any staff, we cleared our table and threw away plates again, I passed the cash I had to the bartender (who had no idea what my tab was or who I was, despite assuring me that they would bring me both my drink and food orders). They then had the audacity to chase me in to the parking lot and demand more money for the tab, and refused to apologize for poor service. The tacos were good, but the service was awful. Take your business to any of the other great places on shore drive. read more

The view is nice, but you can get the same view (if not better) at at least four other restaurants on Shore drive. Tonight was the worst service I have ever received in my life. I am a server, so I'm usually pretty understanding and forgiving, as I know what they are going through. However, this was unacceptable. The first server to approach us, because you will have multiple servers taking care of you, was very short and rude. No introductions, just "what do you want to drink". It took us flagging a server down roughly 15 minutes to place an order. Which then took 45+ minutes to receive the food. When our food arrived, I asked for salt and got the response "I don't know where the salt is, sorry" I was completely taken aback. And flagged down another server to ask her, no salt ever arrived to the table. Then my friend ordered corn tortillas, because she has an allergy to gluten, and her tacos came out in flour tortillas which she started to eat without realizing. After realizing, she flagged down a server, because after 10 minutes no server had been back to check on us. They immediately brought out the fixed tacos. Which we did not trust to be made again, rather they just took the old and put it in a corn tortilla, which would not be acceptable for an allergy. This assumption was because it took 45+ minutes to get our food, and we bring an error to their attention and within a minute they have new tacos. When my friend asked them to just be taken off the bill, we got the response of "ugh well I rang it in right, so that was the kitchens fault so I don't know what you want me to do" and I asked "is that really your response?" Which then prompted the server to say "well I'm just going to walk away now" and she left. Then made another server come take care of us. We had tried to get our bill for over 10 minutes, and even after asking for it multiple times, it took us going up to the server station to finally get it. I still cannot believe the level of "service" we received tonight. I hate that this appears to be acceptable at an establishment, and I hope they get this resolved ASAP. read more

Went on Sunday evening-view was great but service was slow as a tortoise and when we asked them to check on our food ( why did we have to ask in the firstt place?) it came out in a minute but it was bad and cold. We were in town overnight on a Saturday and wanted some local flavor with a place on the water. Being summer, there was no shortage of waterfront restaurants to choose from and we literally just picked The Back Deck at random. In fact, there was a place called Bubba's and another place called Dockside all right in the same parking area. Seat yourself, not many tables, but we found a bench looking out over the water. Great view and plenty of activity on the water to watch. Ordered guacamole and chips to start, tasted and looked like it was pre-packaged. Mediocre at best, pretty weak when you can't make it in house. I ordered the fish tacos, my wife ordered the cilantro-lime shrimp salad. The fish tacos were good, not great. I ate them all, but that's not surprising for me. But, my wife's salad was truly terrible, the shrimp had the most bizarre texture, like it was mush formed into the shape of a shrimp. It was so off putting, she completely lost her appetite (she ended up ordering a burger from room service later). Overall, it seemed pretty clear to us that this is a bar, not a restaurant. The view was great, the servers were friendly, the drinks were cold, it's just not about the food. They didn't charge us for the salad, so that's something. read more

Probably close to the worst fish tacos I have ever had.. Extremely disappointed because the atmosphere is great. My corn taco shells were hard and broken.. Probably frozen and heated improperly. My fish which tasted like poorly cooked tilapia tasted terrible and I pretty much had to cover the tacos with the sauce to make it taste decent. The mango salsa tasted like it had been sitting out all day shriveled tomatoes and sour tasting. The cilantro shrimp salad was extremely underwhelming. very unique and laid back spot. Cozy with just enough room for you and the gang, though it gets pretty busy in the evenings. Amazing "back deck" with open view of the water, and a great place to watch sunsets while enjoying a drink with some casual cuisine. Crab dip is divine with a strong lemon accent, and they have great happy hour deals for beer every day. I would tell the whole world about this place but I get the feeling it's a locals only secret. Mothers' Day, busiest restaurant day of the year, yet we got a table for 4 on the back deck as soon as we entered. It was pretty loud, but the fresh air was great. Crab legs, boiled shrimp and clams were good. A little too much Old Bay for my tastes especially all over my hands and I peeled the shrimp. But the Raw oysters were the best ever. Yummmmm. This is one of our favorite hang outs when the weather warms up but it was a bit of a disaster today. The music on the deck was blasting - way too loud to have a normal conversation with friends. We tried moving away from the speaker but it didn't matter. We asked THREE times for them to turn it down and the waitresses said they would "try but it was busy". During that time someone changed the station a few times (to horrible club music) and actually turned the music up louder. Finally, they turned it down after I was visibly angry about the music. We had to ask three times for waters; trash blew off a tray a waitress was carrying and landed on our table and on us but the waitress paid no attention. Oh, and the computers kept crashing? I hope this was just a bad day because I enjoy coming here. read more
