The Bagel Bakery in Sand City, Ca., WAS my favorite until yesterday. My adult daughter and I ordered our regular bagel sandwiches: Salami and Cheese and Tuna. The main ingredients in each bagel was so very scant as to almost not see it! The thin sliced real Italian salami which you will recall is almost paper thin so you need several to make a sandwich....a Fail in this case. The Tuna was spread like margarine on toast. When I first went in, i was greeted with "are you ready", which from my expression you could clearly tell I wasn't. I was still looking at their menu. So she went back to work. A family came in shortly after, and she helped them when I was first in line waiting for them. She disregarded my existence. Does it really take someone that long to order? I was waiting looking at her direction. Next, an older man got infront of me and he got helped first. I believe he did not even pay. I miss these bagels. Hands down some of the best bagels that I have had. We have nothing like this where I live currently. Fresh, hot, and with just the right amount of chew. My history with the Bagel Bakery goes back to the fall of 1989 on the corner of Reeside and Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey. I remember when the cost of a bagel w/ cream cheese was $0.57 AND the bagels were huge and always fresh. The other thing I remember was the staff, well...they weren't fresh, but they were FRIENDLY! Everyone had a different color shirt and they all wore bandanas. It was one of the coolest places on the peninsula and the best bagels for a great price. That's what defined the Bagel Bakery in 1989...and then it expanded... So, now that I've finished reminiscing... I wanted to leave a review of the Bagel Bakery in Seaside because I can't just NOT say something anymore. I've been frequenting this place recently as it's become a bit of a routine to get a bagel on days when the high school team I coach has away games. A bagel is much faster and easier to eat than a sandwich and heavy enough so I don't get hungry a few hours later. It's the perfect pre-game meal for a coach on-the-go! In the past two weeks, I've visited this Bagel Bakery three times and have realized that what I thought were just "random occurrences" (in the previous visits) are in fact, reality. 1. Poor customer service I'm standing here and you see me standing here because you've clearly made eye contact with me. So, even IF you're busy, you can at least say "I'll be right with you" or something to that affect. Ignoring me is bad, especially when there's that tip bucket on top of your register. If you want a tip, I suggest you acknowledge that I exist. 2. Staff is not friendly (this kinda goes with #1 but whatever!) "What do you want to order? Um....how about, "How can I help you?" When did being polite go out the window? I mean, okay, it's possible that you've had a long day. But you know what, so have I...and I'm hungry and not in the best of moods BECAUSE I'm hungry. But, I'm STILL being friendly to you (since you're the person between me and my lunch) so how about you just be civil? I'm not asking for a hug or flowers! I AM asking you to at least ACT like you care about serving me and anyone else who walks into the place where you work. I've also yet to see ANY of the staff even crack a smile. No matter how nice you are to them (regardless of how they treat you as a a customer) they still don't have any type of human reaction. Do they hate their jobs THAT much or are they dead and just walking around like zombies? At this point I'm not sure which is the lesser of those two evils. 3. Poor hygiene Yesterday, I saw an older Asian woman (who works there, obviously) cough INTO her hand TWICE and then cut a bagel. She wasn't wearing gloves and her skin made contact with the bagel itself. Nice! 4. The Bagel preparation I always order a plain bagel and plain cream cheese, nothing fancy schmancy. So all I ask is that there's enough cream cheese and that my bagel is cut in half. Each of the three times I've been there (in the past two weeks) my bagels have been cut only 75% of the way through. This means I have to try to tear the bagel apart because I don't carry a knife with me at all times. Shocker, I know. So what happens? I try to tear the bagel apart and the cream cheese squirts out onto the wax paper and now I have a mess. Come on! Sharpen the knife or just put a little more leverage into cutting it all the way. 5. Price of Bagels Are you kidding me? It costs TWICE as much to add cream cheese to my bagel than the actual bagel itself? And I thought the inflation at the post office was bad. The size of the bagel has shrunk and cream cheese has gone up in price to the point where it's cheaper to buy a tub and apply it yourself. Two plain bagels with plain cream cheese costs just as much as a foot-long sandwich at Subway! There's something SERIOUSLY wrong with this picture. 6. Payment I understand tips are important to the staff. When I pay with cash, I always give them whatever change is left over. Whether it's $0.50 or a $1.00... that's just how I am. Also, even though I may not have $5 in my pocket to pay for two over-priced bagels, I still may have change for a tip! So when I pulled out my debit card on Monday the woman helping me gave me a look like I just took the food out of her child's mouth because she didn't think she was getting a tip. Oh, excuse me. Should I have told you BEFORE I ordered my over-priced bagel that I was going to use my debit card so you could spit in my food or treat me worse? My bad. And the Costco muffins wrapped in saran wrap on sale as "baked goods". C'mon man! That's tacky as all hell especially since Costco is in the same parking lot! I was REALLY hoping my visits to the Seaside Bagel Bakery (in years past) were just random occurrences and that it wasn't a true reflection on the establishment or the customer service. But in actuality, I'm not the only person who feels this way from the other reviews and from friends I've talked to as well. Thumbs down! Not returning! read more

Wow, ever since I can remember I have nothing but near perfect experiences at any Bagel Bakery. I don't know what happened this time around but I went threw the drive through and asked for a "plain bagel lightly toasted with cream cheese". Well she got my order but what I said next kinda messed her up "can I have 2 packets of honey". She looked at me funny. So then I asked, "if you don't have packets of honey, can you please just put it on the bagel". She stood there and had no idea what I was talking about. After a couple minutes she did go and get me some honey which was super nice of her but she gave me two 2oz containers full of honey. That is a lot of honey and then she charged me for them both. I don't mind that she charged me for extra honey but I didn't need 4 oz of it. That's a lot of honey. A lot. I'm going to stick to the other Bagel Bakeries from now on. read more

It brings me solace that there are so many bad reviews for this place. I have been here a few times, but the terrible customer service offered to me and my guest this past thanksgiving weekend lead me to post this review. The young man at the drive-thru window was extremely rude. If I asked questions to confirm something, he would not respond audibly, or at all, forcing me to ask again. I wouldn't have to ask if he seemed capable of getting our order correct. But he screwed up twice, never offering an apology, and simply telling my guest she would need to pay for the item he left off. We went into the bakery to get an itemized receipt and speak with the manager. The manager went over to the worker, who retrieved our receipt, still with attitude, and the manager went back to making bagels. He didn't care that we were disgruntled, or that his worker had a serious attitude problem. Sorry if you hate your job at the bagel bakery, dude, but quit if you can't do your job right or at least offer average grade customer service when you've screwed up. Their food is okay, but this experience won't bring me, a local customer, back ever again. The hope and prayer is that this bagel bakery and its managemement will rise to the challenge of improving its service and store ASAP. I wonder if management even checks Yelp or cares, frankly, so I would also write the owner/store management directly and the local business bureau (or whoever handles concerns). I grew up eating Bagel Bakery for the past 20+ years. This location in Sand City really needs help - a remodel and overhaul. The floors and counters are dirty (look behind and under the back counters) and the sanitary conditions of the food is questionable. Place needs to be brightened up, a professional scrub down, and a new prep area. See the food prep area. I also once saw ants trailing along the sticky counter and sugar dispensers near the coffees. No one likes to be greeted with a stern, unmoving frown and unhappy attitude. It was quite shocking and funny to see this from the older worker wearing a hat while me and my husband were in positive spirits. She needs to improve her customer attitude (clearly she hates working there and doesn't care) or not work there anymore and be released. The one young lady was lovely, friendly and quick on the other hand. Bravo to her for staying spirited with a grumpy coworker. As for the bagels, they are quite good. Small and a bit chewy. Best fresh in the morning of course. The veggie sandwich, cinnamon raisin as well as the sundried tomatoes one are favs. This is a tough critique but I have real nostalgia about Bagel Bakery and want it to shine again. I had to write this review on how unpleased I am at this location. First time there and I'd probably wouldn't have gone if I had read the reviews on yelp first. So roll up to the drive-thru window and order 2 sesame seed bagels with cream cheese and drive off back to work. The bagels were for my picky kiddos and the bagel order was cinnamon and raisin, she hates raisins. So I take them back and explain to her what had happen and that ill keep one of the raisins for my husband. The gal charges me for the extra bagel and asked for the one back. I have been to The Bagel Bakery in Sand City many times in my life, but NEVER have I been so dissatisfied as today, 10/15/2014. I drove up to the drive through, ordered a VERY simple plain bagel toasted with cream cheese, and the first thing the girl did was laugh, ask her co-worker what I said, then I heard the co-worker laugh, then she very unprofessionally asked what I said not only once, but THREE more times. I am not quiet! I was not mumbling! It was outrageous. Next, I order a bagel with Salami, sprouts, and avocado, and she yet again makes me repeat it several times over because every time she said the order back to me it was incorrect. After she finally got my order down, she laughed and notified me that they were out of salami. So I ordered a sesame bagel with cream cheese, which she STILL could not get down. SO SIMPLE. I asked for a gatorade, she laughed and told me they were out. At this point I was angry and frustrated, but glad to be done with their god-awful 15 year old 'order here' speaker. I get to the window, and I kid you not, SHE ASKED WHAT MY ORDER WAS, AGAIN. She made me repeat the entire thing, so what is the use in the speaker where you order at all???? She took my money before telling me the total, had my 10 dollar bill in her hand and was talking to a co-worker and then opened the cash register and then told me the total, NOT OKAY BY ANY MEANS. I am definitely a Bagel Bakery regular and supporter. The place is consistently good and fresh! It's the best place to get bagels here locally, and it is made easy with four locations. They have bagel wraps, bagel sandwiches, bagel dogs, bagels and flavored cream cheese, which are all made fresh. They also offer regular sandwiches and even breakfast bagel sandwiches. I have enjoyed everything I have ordered! They also carry a great variety of beverages and very, very good blended mochas!! I have tried the: #1 on sesame with no sprouts, add lettuce (my go to lunch) The Hamlet (mehhh) Sante Fe wrap (yumm) Veggie Wrap (yummmm) Bagel Dog (double yum!!!!) and of course, my go to favorite quick breakfast, the sesame toasted with herb cream cheese! Look for the wait times if in a hurry on Saturday/Sunday mornings both inside and in drive-thru, and even on most days. I do thoroughly enjoy my trips to the Bagel Bakery but, are the bagels the best I have ever had or NY approved? I wouldn't say so. I also wish they didn't run out of the wraps and bagel dogs so quickly they are my favorite and they should try to be sure to have the menu items most of the day. (-1 Star for that and very slow moving line) The Bagels are pretty tasty though and freshly baked daily. Plenty of options here too. This place has great bagels. They are always under staffed or training new people so expect to wait a minute when coming here. There is a variety of bagels and combos to choose from and I always try something different. I like to get the Hamlet on an Everything bagel. Their California bagel looks really good so I am going to try that next time. There staff always feels annoyed at my presence but I think it's just there is a lot going on at all times. So I would have rated higher but the staff just kills it for me. There is a drive as well, if you don't feel like getting out of your car, but I don't think it's faster than just parking and going in. So I believe that management has changed as well as the baker. The bagels are not as crisp as they used to be. The bagel dogs have been raw. First time a family member picked one up and I took a bite and got semi-raw dough. Ended up spitting it out and wrapping it up to take it home and bake it longer. Again today, I picked up a bagel dog to see if maybe that was a one time fluke. I think not, raw dough again. This is very disappointing. I also picked up some loose bagels and those were not as golden colored, more a pale color. Short staffed it seems like. This is my second time here. I ordered the California Dream which has egg, mushrooms, Jack cheese, avocado, sprouts, and a side is salsa. Very tasty. I like how they handle the food.
