I've been going here for years, and I live in the Boston area. I even ask my brother he lives nearby to buy baked goods for me when he knows I'm coming up. Aside from the nicest people, this nondescript shop on the side of a downtown bypass road makes incredibly delicious coffee rolls and "to die for" blueberry coffee cake made with wild blueberries. There are other very yummy pastries, but I'm stuck on these two, and they both freeze well with no impact on their flavor or moisture content. The coffee cake is SO amazing that I've taken it to Mexico, France, and Taiwan where it now has many fans. It is in a class by itself! Baker's Bench makes an awesome bread, Prairie Loaf. I've taken many loaves home (also freezes well) and had it enhance my egg salad, tuna. and other sandwich experiences. But, while scanning the pastry case you will most definitely want to order their Turkey Rachel sandwich, prepare yourself for pure Nirvana! It consists of slabs of roast turkey, homemade coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on Prairie Loaf. I visit the Baker's Bench fairly often. There's a couple reasons for this: 1. It's walking distance from my office, so it's an easy lunch choice; 2. It's near where I live, so again, an easy choice on Saturdays; and 3. It's JUST THAT GOOD!! First and foremost, this is a bakery. They have some amazing sweet treats. I think they are most widely known for their cream horns, which are delicious, but not my thing. I openly admit that I have a small addiction to their peanut butter frosted brownie. It is a very moist chocolate brownie coated in almost an inch of peanut butter frosting that is creamy and not too sweet, then a thin layer of ganache tops it off. I always say, I'll eat half now and save the other for later. I've never made it to later. They also have a variety of other frosted brownies, cupcakes (the carrot cake is pretty yummy), as well as pastries like croissants, turnovers, and such. But, as any good bakery does, they also bake bread. And when you have bread, you may as well offer some sandwiches. They have about 5-7 sandwiches that you can choose from including a Rachel, Thanksgiving, and Club. The turkey is real and delicious. And, you can't beat a sandwich on homemade bread, right? In the cooler months, they have soups that change daily as well. As a soup lover, this is probably my favorite thing about this place. My favorite combo - the Tomato Basil soup (big chunks of tomato with fresh basil) with a lovely spinach and feta croissant on the side for dipping. It is the perfect pick me up on a cold winter's day. Oh, and if I haven't sold you enough, on Wednesday, they sell Chicken Pot Pies for something like $13. A whole fresh from scratch (including the crust) chicken pot pie for $13!! Seriously - it's worth every penny and then some! read more

For most of my life, I didn't really like creme horns that much, considering them to be complete sweetness overload, but that was before I found the Baker's Bench in Westbrook. Now, I'm like some hopeless addict attempting recovery, desperately trying not to head across town to score some more. These are the best creme horns in the known universe. I've been there, so I know. The lunch menu is limited, but a wicked bargain, considering the reasonable price and decent size of the sandwiches. The confections and the bread are all excellent. The only downside of the place is the rather sour owner. I don't think she likes people very much, but customers still frequent the place in spite of her. What a great little place. Definitely the place to go to for dessert. But the sandwiches were delicious too! And big portions. Small seating area of 3 or 4 tables but most people seemed to be getting takeout. They have a cooler with bottled drinks. Everything from Pepsi products to juice and tea. Parking seemed to be very limited with space for 3 cars. But there may have been other parking I couldn't/didn't see. I had the Thanksgiving sandwich which was turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce on yummy white bread. And my Mom has the tuna on a multi grain Prairie bread. read more

The Baker's Bench is located in a nondescript building in a nondescript part of Westbrook. The interior is uninspired and unmemorable. The staff is on both ends of the friendly spectrum: from the extremely surly character who won't return baseballs hit in their yard to the sweet as pie little kids selling lemonade. But you're not coming here for the exterior aesthetics, the location, the interior design, or the people ringing you up. You're here for what's inside their glass cases. I can't speak to the sandwiches - I'm an herbivore and there aren't any options for me. And I wasn't personally enamored with the chocolate croissants or the raspberry cream cheese croissants, however... 1. The spinach and feta croissants are everything you want from a spinach and feta croissant: a little salty, a little tangy, a little buttery, a little flaky, a little earthy. A lotta good. 2. The cream horns are straight out of a dream. I grew up in a smaller French-Canadian community who swore by pastries and coffee every day (and they're all living into their eighties, so they're obviously on to something), and these taste like my childhood. These taste like dessert after a bean supper. These are not to be missed. 3. Stop your search: The Baker's Bench has one of the BEST cinnamon rolls in the entire state of Maine. I would like to tell you about them, but every time I get one I inhale it. This is not a diet friendly, dietary restriction friendly bakery. The fact that this bakery is just a stones throw from my house is both a blessing and a curse. Everything I've had from here has been amazing. I love the chocolate croissants, the sandwiches (come to me hot pastrami), the little Japanese raisin bar thingys (can never remember what they call them, but they're GREAT). The reason for the dropped star is that twice I've ordered sandwiches from here and twice I've had to go back because the order was wrong. So, a quick check of the order before you leave the store would be prudent, but it should definitely NOT stop you coming. read more

Buy your pastries and pies here. One of the few last true local bakery's. They make to order pies once a week, and are renowned for their creme rolls or French Horns. What a tremendous find to have stumbled upon. With rising food prices and ever-diminishing quality, I often wonder if it might be time to stop going out for meals entirely. And then I find a place like The Baker's Bench, and all is right with the world again. Got the Thanksgiving sandwich on a multigrain bread and a spinach and feta croissant. Both were among the best I have tasted in years, and were of generous portions- better yet, the prices were very reasonable. It's almost a half hour drive for me, but I will gladly make the trip to support a place with such a focus on quality and affordability. They are also very professional and friendly. The woman in line ahead of me actually asked the counter attendant to name, describe and price every item in two display cases, and the employee seemed happy to do so (several times). This place is the total package! It's going to be very difficult to order something different next time, however, I am betting that each offering is equally fantastic. read more

This little spot in Westbrook has fantastic sandwiches and pastries! I have driven by hundreds of times but finally stopped in from a coworkers recommendation for lunch....I never knew they served sandwiches! I had the turkey sandwich last week and since then have been back for two more times....the turkey is not the fake deli sliced kind of turkey and comes with lettuce, tomato and cheese and its so thick, you have to squish the sandwich just to get a bite. Not to mention their sweets in the side case, delicious! The lemon bar and cream puff, my word...yum. The only thing I would suggest is putting names to the pastries so you will know what each item is....I had to have an employee tell me what the most of the mouth watering items where. I guess not a bad problem because I probably would have ordered one of everything! I plan on going this week again for my turkey sandwich and pickle (and another pastry, maybe a brownie this time). So...I FINALLY got around to checking out the Baker's Bench for lunch last weekend. I had tried their baked goods in the past and thought they were solid, but not necessarily worth a special trip. On the other hand, I had gotten several tips about their sandwiches and soups and turned up on a Tuesday snow day with lunch on my mind. First impressions were not great. There are only three parking spots outside the bakery and the street was pretty much off limits because of a recent snowstorm. Also, there are 3 tables inside. Tables that are wobbly and off level and feel as though they could fall apart at any moment. While we were ultimately waited on 2 different people behind the counter, the first person to help us was somewhat rude. It was a combination of voice tone and body language that messaged me that she was doing us a HUGE favor by taking out order. Ugh! At this point, you might be marveling that I gave the BB 4 stars! Honestly, it was the quality of the food and the kindness of the rest of the staff. We ordered a BLT, a turkey sandwich and haddock chowder. The BLT was stellar, might be the closest one i've had that could compete with Pat's Meat market in Portland. I got it on scotch oatmeal bread and it was packed with bacon. The turkey sandwich was a revelation. REAL hand sliced turkey, with fresh vegetables on scotch oatmeal bread. On it's own merit, a 5 star sandwich! The haddock chowder was great, chock full of haddock, potatoes AND bacon! Both sandwiches came with a fresh pickle slice. All of this and a drink from the cooler came to under $20!!! I would absolutely recommend checking out the Baker's Bench for lunch. You just need to hope you get a parking spot and hope that you get one of the many friendly faces behind the counter to take your order. The Baker's Bench is such a little gem! We have gotten their bacon, egg, & cheese breakfast sandwich on a croissant numerous times and it is huge! Not to mention, it is only $3.75 which is a steal compared to other breakfast/brunch places that tend to jack up the price for smaller portions. Also, the staff is really nice and friendly and are more than willing to answer any questions regarding their fresh baked goods. Now, the inside of this bakery could really use some TLC - some older tables and chairs are available for people to dine-in, although from what I've seen, most people pop in and take their items to go. Let's just say, the place isn't aesthetically appealing - but hey, if that allows more focus on delicious sandwiches/pastries at a super reasonable price.. then I don't mind! read more

This place is truely a gem, and to have it right down the road from me in Westbrook is just plain dangerous! Everything I've ever had from here has been sublime. The breads, the pastries, all amazing. The dense and flavorful multi-grain bread containing sunflower seeds and other goodies makes the world's best toast. The dinner rolls are a fantastic addition to any meal. The one item I haven't seen mentioned, that is my absolute favorite, is their cupcakes. The Baker's Bench has the best cupcakes I've ever had. Huge, moist, rich, and topped with melt-in-your-mouth buttercream. You can easily split these with someone else, but I'm far too greedy with these amazing treats. One time, my co-worker brought in cream horns from the Baker's Bench.. I have never had them before and sweet sweet lord, I will probably never get them from any where but here. (Sorry sad little cellophane wrapped grocery store horns.... no dice.) Baker's Bench has just about everything I would want in a bakery: great cupcakes, cookies, bars, and croissants (get the almond ones!). I had a breakfast sandwich on a croissant the other day... and it was amazing. The egg was still runny, and for that alone I swooned. Yes, baked goods make me swoon. I also love their bread - the Scotch Oatmeal is my favorite. Their sandwiches are a solid lunch option if you are passing through Westbrook and trying to find something substantial on the go. Yeah, yeah, parking is not great, and it might be a pain to walk to from downtown Westbrook - but get over it you animals. It is a minor annoyance for such lovely things. read more

My girlfriend and I stopped in here while we were on vacation in Maine. The Baker's Bench is a great place to stop into for lunch with amazing sandwiches on their homemade bread, and you will drool over all of the delicious desserts that they have staring you in the face when you walk in. While we were eating our lunch in the bakery, I saw a lot of people stopping in just to grab a loaf of fresh made bread or to pick up a few desserts for later. I can say that I'm glad I don't live near The Baker's Bench because I would be much larger than I already am. I come here a lot on my lunch breaks. The bread is very good and always fresh. I usually get chicken or tuna salad sandwiches, but the last time I went I got the Rachel. The turkey on the sandwich was sliced chunks of turkey, as if it came off of a roasted turkey. The coleslaw was really good too. I think this will now be my usual order when I go. Of all the pastries, my favorite is the raspberry brownie. It has a layer of raspberry jelly, topped by a thick layer of raspberry frosting that is super buttery, but not very sugary, so it feels light. On top of that is a layer of hardened chocolate. It is so good I have to fight myself not to buy it every time I go. The parking lot is small but there is a lot of street parking nearby. read more

This is easily missed in a busy area. I stopped and picked up a few danish and a coffee crumb cake. Unfortunately, the crumb cake was a gift and I didn't get to try it; however, it looked amazing and the reports i got echo that thought. I had the cheese danish and it was amazing! My son liked the raspberry danish as well. My only complaint would be when I entered the bakery the girl at the front wasn't very friendly, one of the bakers in the back said hello and seemed more friendly. I wanted that warm, small business, community feeling and didn't get it from the girl in the front. That is a miss.
