We've tried this place out a few times now, and won't be returning here. Each time I've made an appointment for our dog to get washed here, the price I'm told the particular service I want will be over the phone never matches up with what they try to charge when I pick my dog up. They have repeatedly tried charging me more when I go to pick up my dog than what I was told on the phone when I made the appointment. Very frustrating when you're expecting the service to be a certain price and each time you get there to pick up your dog it's higher. Each time, they've been aware of the breed of my dog and an additional service was not added on (just what I requested when I made each appointment). Then when I explain the price I was told over the phone for each service, they claim there's no way I was told that price. What kind of company behaves like this? Basically telling your customer they're a liar. Also, the most recent time we took our dog in, she was there for over 4 hours for just a bath and brush (no haircut). Don't waste your time with this poorly run shop. read more

This place is fantastic. They take terrific care of your dogs; it really is a "calling" to be near the dogs for this group. The quality of the grooming is top notch. I am very happy I switched to The Barker Shop about three years ago. I have two dogs and they always come back clean, happy, and healthy. My previous groomer "seemed" capable, but I was haunted by how thirsty and timid my dogs were after their grooming appointments (plus the quality of grooming fluctuated). The quality of grooming and service of The Barker Shop is remarkably consistent. My dogs always come home smiling, happy, and looking "doggie gorgeous". We love Liz and Novi. Other people are great too but these two are our fave. Liz iZ grooming Frida (my red toy poodle) now one year. And we are more than happy to have her. Very professional. In the shop you can find a lot things for you for your furry friend. And they have funny T-shirts also! Food and hair care products are also available like the dental care program. It is good place to keep her coat in shape. Oh, there is also one very nice lady in shop who can take care for your pet if you are out of town or something else. read more

I took my Golden Doodle puppy here for daycare and asked them to give her a bath. When I picked her up today, I was shocked to see that they shaved her face and cut her hair so she now was pointed paws. I never asked for grooming, or a haircut or a nail trim. I like her to look like a teddy bear and now she looks like a shaved poodle. The manager did not really care that I was upset. She said it was a mis communication and to them a bath means a BBT which must mean a grooming. She said the groomer had time so he did it. I was charged $180.00 for daycare and a bath and walked out with a really bad haircut. Beware of poor service, attitude and bad behavior. Horrible experience! read more

If I could give 0 I would! We were recommended to this groomer and never again will we return. Pics are posted. Both of our dogs came out with significant injuries and no one had a straight answer other than blaming other people. They even tried to blame my dog sitter saying they injured them when they dropped them off. This place is horrible and the owner didn't even try giving a refund, a form of credit, or anything! Bad professionalism and terrible business. They claim they love and care for animals not when you see the photos. This looks like abuse to me. They also charged me $210 for my poodle alone and never explained how the cost goes up with specific cuts. read more

Okay place, lots to buy for your dog and is clean, but felt the prices were a bit all over and somewhat expensive. One thing I did not appreciate was the attitude of the groomers, not so friendly - they actually charge more if your dog whines too much, they consider that annoying and difficult. They need to find another professional or take a vacation from it if that's how they truly feel about the dogs they care for. read more

They are organized and it is a nice shop. However, the prices are outrageous. $60.00 for a small, short-haired dog? Every service is ala carte and you don't know the damages until it's too late. In fact, the intake girl said it would be around $30.00...she wasn't certain. Turned out to be double that. Not a bad place to go to once in a while. It has your typical bones and treats. Prices are fair for a nail trim and bath. Customer service could be better. Find myself standing at the register for a few minutes, waiting to pay for my items before someone even says hi. Wish they were a bit friendlier toward my pup when I bring him there. UPDATE**** service has gotten better. They have also expanded and included a daycare. The only weird thing is that they seem to love those little Foo Foo dogs a lot. read more

We had our first grooming for our older Westie at the Barker Shop in May during Covid. Matt, our groomer, was terrific--he did a great job, was really professional and friendly, and spent time talking to me first to learn about our dog and our preferences. He was very sweet with our dog. I'm a nervous dog owner and worry any time we go somewhere new but I felt totally comfortable here. They have a safe and efficient set up during Covid. While we have only seen Matt so far, they have a lot of groomers on staff and the manager, Tracey, is very helpful at finding the right fit for you. read more

I have been taking my dog to The Barker Shop for grooming for a few years now. I had tried a few places before taking her here. She's a handful, but if you're a professional dog groomer you should be able to work with all types. She would come back a little traumatized, a few times mild injuries from the grooming. Susan at the Barker Shop does an absolutely spectacular job. I know my dog isn't easy, but Susan must have a way with her because my dog ends up looking adorable and happy after her visit. I anxiously took my kitty here to be groomed for the first time ever. We had previously lived in the south where she never got much of a winter coat. In Illinois, however, mats and furballs were getting out of hand. The folks at the Barker Shop were very sensitive to my concerns about having her groomed for the first time and promised not to bathe her if she seemed upset by the water or do anything else that was upsetting (other than getting those darn mats out!). A few hours later, I picked up a happy, relaxed, and well-groomed kitty. Sure, it costs more than going to a chain, but you get what you pay for. Kendra is our favorite groomer, by the way. One more note, I took my cat here once and wasn't satisfied because the hairballs continued and she wasn't cut short enough. The head groomer was great about making things right and took great care to correct the problem. read more

I love the Barker Shop and so does my dog. His coat is nice and he is groomed well and has his nails trimmed every six weeks However, the prices are a bit steep in comparison to other shops. I have been bringing him since she was a puppy so I will continue. If my dog misbehaves-- like barks too much or is not in a good mood, right away they hand me a bunch of advertising for products, and for trainers and special dog food without additives or preservatives. This time, a trainer was recommended. He is almost nine years old and passed all his training in dog training. He just needed a little attention. Our home situation has changed drastically and he is one lonely dog and craves people. Obviously, he was not receiving the attention he needed. Of course, I am partially to blame. However, he does not do this with me, ever. The store carries a lot of "stuff" almost to a fault and now-- it is overwhelmingly full of dog food so you cannot walk through the place. And, every dog that comes in goes absolutely crazy sniffing the dog food. So unfair to have all these treats out there. There must be a lot of money to made in selling it. I love some of their products but honestly, you can find them online for a lot less money and the exact same products, especially the toys and chewies. The Day Care is kind of small for dogs over 35 lbs. Mine is a labrador and he is close to 95 lbs. I am not sure if he is given the all attention he needs. The larger dogs seemed to be held down by leashes and just sit and watch. I only drop him off once in a while if I have to be gone from home more than 5 hours at a time. All in all the counter staff are just kids and they are friendly when they have time to be because it can get quite noisy and busy all at once with people dropping and picking up their dogs. Of course, everyone is always in a hurry, too. I always try and pay ahead of time, if there is time. So, the staff are attentive but sometimes no one is there! Or, when you call, there is an answering machine, you leave a message, and they never call you back!. Why bother with the answering machine? This is why I only gave it four stars because place needs a tweek with more organization with it's staff, answering the phones, and have more room to walk through the store, with less dog food filling up all the space in the place! Also, prices need to drop down around 10%. Then, it could get a good 5 star review from me and my pup!!! The Barker Shop is his favorite place to hang out. Also, the Pet Rescue The Barker Shop sponsors is really a good cause and worth adopting a dog from. The dogs set up for adoption are beautiful and I so tempted to take one home each time. What I love about this place is that it is one of the few to offer hand stripping (for breeds like norwich and cairn terriers with double coats), and the two hand strippers there really know how to give the perfect terrier cut! This place is cute and the staff is friendly. My puppy Cody comes out looking perfect every time, they went easy on him since hes not quite used to getting groomed. A+ read more

The third time I took my dog here they cut is nails so short that he bled. A lot. All over the house. I took him back and they packed the wound and told me over and over that is was no big deal. I was really upset. I got him home the second time and he bled all over the place again. Carpet. Floors. His bed. Very Disappointing! I was recommended by a co -worker to come here. I called this morning to inquire about a nail trim. I was told to come in anytime, we are open until 6. To jut stop in, no appointment needed. So I arrive today at 5:24 and Paige at the front desk says I needed to be here earlier. Groomers finish by 4:30 or 5. I told her what the lady on the phone this morning told me, I just came from 20 minutes away on a recommendation. She replied with "yeah , sorry, that's the way it is and you should always call first. Hello Paige - I Did - This Morning! Then as I settle in the car to leave, her and the girl sweeping up are laughing. The Customer Service needs to be worked on here and everyone should know and follow the same rules. There is a point where I am willing to pay a premium for service from a local business and a point where I call it quits. I have had repeated difficulty getting my dogs back from grooming and until I read the other reviews here, I believed the excuses... weather changed, every wanted their dog clean.... one of the groomers didn't show.... but to find out this is the norm instead of the exception I think I'll go elsewhere. As for the selection? I wish they had more supplement and homeopathic options.... I would love to be able to save myself from having to drive to glen ellyn. read more

THIS REVIEW IS NOT ABOUT BARKER SHOP, rather the "boarding facility" that uses the space. Unfortunately, you are the company you keep...and I'd rather be associated with criminals. But I guess she technically is. I was informed of Kristen?, via a volunteer at BS. She hadn't heard much feedback, but we both figured the Shop would have a great place. I call her close to the date (Christmas time) and she tells me "usually she's booked solid, but she has some openings". Now I know why. So, I'm in FL, and I get a call from her. My Lab had a severely injured tail...from an UNKNOWN CAUSE. um, he's like my child, except my daughter can articulate what happens to her. He has been boarded maybe 5 times in his almost 12 years. They try to say maybe he chewed it, or it got "stuck" in a door. 1st off, those are 2 TOTALLY different injuries. 2nd, I'm calling Bull. So she asks if I want him to see a vet...no, I want him to clean it himself and diagnose it. But I ask her "professional" opinion and she suggests it. She'll use"her vet". Uh huh... I go to pick him up, his tail is MUTILATED. That she had to guess on his medical care is frightening. He hadn't healed by October of the next year. Anyone who saw it was in true disbelief. More so that I paid for her AND the vet. Speaking of payment, I'm very well aware I probably can't get him without paying!! I have a credit card, BShop says sorry, she doesn't take them. Um...she should have mentioned she's a separate payment than the grooming. Never once. So the very nice man says, we know you, come back when you can. I live a block away, bring my dog there, don't plan on fleeing the country. She calls me ONCE 2 days later, I didn't answer. She starts BOMBARDING my mother with calls. I'm 33...she was my emergency contact. My mom calls and says "some crazy b@&$h won't stop calling me. Call her back or she's gonna hear it from me". My mom isn't a tough guy, she wanted to lose it on her. So, I call her to tell her to 1) calm down 2) do not call mommy 3) It's been 2 days, one a holiday, and your fault you didn't inform me of limited payment options. She goes OFF! Yes, I had attitude. But she got personal..."you always were a little spoiled brat, good luck in life!" Um...hey weirdo, I've never met you. Turns out she rode at the same stable I did. Apparently she's a loser or a b&$@h bc none of knew her from WHEN I WAS 16! And there 7 days/ wk. No wonder no one talked to you babe. Then she hangs up on me. Class act. At that point I think, screw you, I'll take my time. And my dog was BLEEDING ALL OVER MY HOUSE for a month. She tries to deny this, I have pics and witnesses. She then calls my mom about 30 times. I've never seen anything like it, she truly needs I be committed. After leaving endless voicemails on my moms phone about her "hard work" and divorce , etc, I don't doubt for one second why her husband left her. Employees of BS told me she said crazy stuff about me bc. of this. You destroyed my dog lunatic, you're lucky I don't sue you and/or not pay. Come to find out she comes with plenty of warnings about her "business", and it's recently been brought to my attention, may not be insured. I plan on finding this out because $800 for 10 days is a little steep...Karma honey, karma. read more

I've been bringing my dogs to The Barker Shop for about a year and have always been very happy with how my dogs look. However, their service is just horrible. Twice I've taken my dog there in the late morning and he wasn't ready until after 5pm. I dropped my dog off at 11:15am on a Saturday and was told that he should be ready around 3pm. We don't live that close to The Barker Shop so we always make a point to plan our day around staying on that side of town. It was nearing 3:45pm when my daughter finally received a call from the groomer saying she was running behind schedule and the dog should be ready in an hour. Our dog was now at the place for over four hours stuck in a crate. I don't know if they let the dogs out to go to the bathroom at all, but I doubt it since as soon as we leave the place my dog pees for an entire minute. Also, why did I have to drop my dog off at 11:15am if you're not going to get to him until after 3pm? To make a long story short he wasn't ready until after 5pm and then it cost $68 (for a toy poodle) to have him groomed. That is outrageous. I had other plans for the day, but couldn't get to them because I was waiting past the time they said he would be finished. I explained this when I got there and got no apology. All they said was, "Bring him earlier in the morning." How about I don't bring him back at all? I've had my dogs groomed at other places in the area and have never had it take this long or had it cost that much. As I said my dogs always look really nice when they come out, but it's not like I'm planning on putting them in a show. So it doesn't really matter how incredible they look. Next time I get my dogs groomed I'm going somewhere closer and cheaper. Congrats on losing a customer Barker Shop! read more

I can't say enough about the Barker Shop and their staff (volunteers included)!! My daughters dog "Stella" was lost and Kathy (owner) put out a blast to her friends about Stella being lost. Within a day we got emails about "Stella" being sited. Kathy sent (3) of her volunteers to help us search for "Stella". They took time out of their Saturday "no Pay" to help us find "Stella". Thanks to them we have "Stella" back!! Without their help we would still be searching. Also enjoy their products and services. Their products are top of the line but reasonably priced (what my dog deserves). My own dog is a little nervous and fidgety when I get him trimmed but with time and their trained groomers; I do not foresee a problem. They will take time and be patient with his uneasiness. Needed a place for doggy day care on Saturdays near my home and they are fabulous with my pit bull. You can imagine the difficulty I have in putting him in daycare. I was a walk-in and they took him right in for a try-out! WOW. No apt, no red tape. And 1st time is free! And Saturdays are considered 1/2 day which = cheaper price! My guy goes to daycare in the Loop M-F. I knew there would be no issues from him. I just know how most daycare places freak about the breed! I didn't have any of that here. Now, we're regulars. The daycare is indoor only and small but it works out perfectly--my guy comes home happily exhausted. That's all I ask and expect from a doggy daycare. No fuss. Do a good job. You literally can buy most of the items sold in this store online for cheaper or better yet, you can go to any other store and they will price adjust the item for you. So if something is cheaper online and you want it now, you can go to ANY other store and show them the price online and they'll adjust it for you...how convenient but the Barker Shop will not do that for you. read more

I was really nervous taking my cat in to get groomed. He had never been to a groomer before but he was so badly matted that I finally gave in and made an appointment. Mario was so good with him. He took my cat out of his crate while I was there, examined him, and said he could keep his mane and tail since they were not badly matted. I also gave him a bottle of Pet Rescue remedy to put a drop on my cat's nose to help calm him down which he did prior to grooming. My cat was done in less than 3 hours and was calm and happy when I picked him up, not stressed at all and looked just beautiful, was so soft, and his nails were clipped too! I hope that I never let him get this bad again but I would definitely take him to Mario again if he does. read more

Because of our dogs bread (sheepdog) we never give her hair cuts. I knew the place offered baths for cheap so we called and scheduled an appointment for a 10:45am bath. When I was on the phone I told them I do not want ANY hair cut off. When I dropped her off I reminded them not to cut her hair and I watch them write it on the "instruction" sheet. I was told to pick her up at 2:30 (it must have been a long bath!). When I walk in I saw my dog with a shaved face and paws. I almost screamed! The guy at the counter told me 5 fives no hair was cut. When he went back to talk to the person who cleaned her he was mistaken. He wanted to "even out her hair". BEWARE!!!!!! EVEN THOUGH YOU ASK FOR SOMETHING SPECIFIC THEY DONT LISTEN. ive been taking my dog here for about a year and he loves it. they go above and beyond to give him an amazing service and make him look nice and clean every time! if you want your dogs hair cut a certain way they are really good at listening and achieving the look you want for your pup. my dog used to get really nervous about going to groomers as he is only a tiny 4lb morkie but when he sees his amazing groomer Jennie he is so excited and he now loves getting brushed! all the workers here know my dog by name and tell me how happy they are to have him as guest. he looks so good every time i pick him up and this place is so much better than any other dog groomer i have ever been to. they are the best! read more

This place offers grooming, daycare and a retail front. We stopped in to see what kind of treats and toys they had. I was a little disappointed with the selection of toys. I could go to Target and buy them cheaper. The treat selection was mediocre. They do however, carry good treats. The staff seemed nice and offered us the do it yourself bath. I doubt we'd go back but while there we did pick up a few cans of food and some treats. read more

My dog had been coming to the BS for a few months and I was always happy. He was just a puppy and one day I got a call saying a dog bit him. I couldn't get to him till after work and when I did, the injury didn't seem too bad. By the time I got him to the vet and they shaved him to look at the injury, it was quite extensive. It cost 300 dollars. The BS never called to see how he was or anything. Needless to say, he has never been back. read more

I came here randomly because they were one of the places that carry a variety of raw food for dogs. My dog was having a lot of issues with his stomach, was refusing to take antibiotics and just didn't want to eat. His breeder suggested raw food so I swung by this store. I explained what was going on with my dog and the woman behind the counter could not have been more helpful. I left with some great food (and even a free sample) and good advice. My dog loved the food and has really perked up since starting his raw diet. I felt like I was really listened to and I plan on going back next week. The worker really knew a lot about dogs, food, and nutrition. I was incredibly impressed! read more

i am reviewing The Barker shop..but my experience was quite a while ago..but i feel compelled to share my experience..after a friend informed me he went there..i brought my 13 year old poodle to be groomed ..first time at this groomer..after about 5 hours i get a call from them telling me something is wrong with my dog..i rush over there and find my dog can barely stand ..she looks confused ..all they did was shampoo her..like a fool i still tipped the groomer 20$ and Rush my dog to the vet and spend another 100$ to get her checked out..the vet thought she may of fell and was injured ..they gave her non steroidal anti -inflammatories ..i suspect my dog may of been given something to relax her..but couldn't understand why..she is a very mellow standard poodle .. all in all it was a nightmare for me ..to be fair and balance my friend was satisfied with their performance ..for me i now groom my own dog because what me and the pooch went thru was not worth it.... read more

I came into the shop wanting to look at raw food. My dog has GI issues and my boyfriend and I have made the decision we want to switch to raw. When I walked in I was immediately greeted and the owner asked me if I had any questions. We started talking, and she seemed extremely knowledgeable and interested in hearing about all the issues with my boy. She was, however, quite the saleswoman. She took me on a tour of the entire shop showing me all the different products I needed to buy for my dog. I agreed to a probiotic and a bag of food she recommended and was fairly happy about the experience. UNTIL I came home and did the math - she sold me a $30 bag of dog food that was going to last me less than TWO DAYS. This was partially my fault for not reading into it more before purchasing, but she definitely knew this information and held out on it - which I did not appreciate at all. I've been taking my Bichon Frise here for almost a year now. My first experience was so great I continue to ask for the same groomer, Mario. My dog's cut has been perfect every time, even the hair between his paw pads (which I know he can give a hard time with). He also did a great job with brushing his teeth. The staff is very informative and friendly especially for dogs with sensitive skin/skin allergies like my dog. The staff also seems to listen and communicate well with other staff. I've told one staff member the way I've wanted my dog groomed and they relayed it to the groomer perfectly. They also seem to genuinely care about the animals they groom based on interaction I've seen with the dogs. Also, one time I received a call letting me know my dog was acting a little scared. They let me know 20 minutes before the groom was over so my dog wouldn't have to wait for me after his groom was finished...such good service! This place is more pricey than others I've gone to but the cut does last longer between each cut and you just can't beat the cut and service! I would definitely recommend this place! read more

I go to The Barker Shop for my fur child's raw food. They always have a great supply of the Nature's Variety raw and at the best prices. Believe me, after I moved back here I needed to find a new supplier for the raw, so I called around. Plus they had a 25% off sale for dental health month! They also carry freeze dried, canned, kibble and treats- good healthy brands. Everyone is always nice and friendly, very helpful! I haven't used the grooming services yet... They also have photography services, which I probably won't use as I am a photographer myself. But beautiful photos at the store! Parking always available. I stopped by one time thinking they were open later that day, well missed by about 20 minutes. They still let me in and I was able to buy the food we needed. I am switching to a raw brand that The Barker Shop does not carry but I will continue to go there for treats, etc. Check out their selection of Cubbies gear too! I will never bring my dog to the barker shop for grooming, or shopping. A friend brought her dog in for grooming about a week ago, and when she picked up her dog, the dog was having trouble breathing. She took the dog to the vet were it turned out she had almost been CHOKED TO DEATH. Her trachea had collapsed and the veterinarian was able to save her, but had suggested putting her down. When my friend called the barker shop they said "the people in back do not speak English, and may have choked her," no doubt to try to "calm her down," if she was agitated or afraid. I cannot believe something like this could happen at a place that you are supposed to trust the care of your dog with. I am appalled by this whole situation. read more
