Seasonal beach restaurants are challenging for many reasons- many new employees each season in both cooking and service, many of which are young students on Summer break. In this situation, strong management is a must in order to bridge the knowledge and experience gap. I arrived to the restaurant with a tinge of sadness because this place is the former Seaside Johnies restaurant run by John Ambrose. John also ran the Tiki bar and he was a long time friend. His sudden passing a few years ago was a shock as he was a great guy and restaurant fixture in Westchester for over 40 years- including the Crab Shanty. The setting at Barley Beach House needs lots of help. The patio can use a solid cleaning and Placemats on the tired tables would be a good start. Luckily the weather was ideal- cool with a nice breeze so our patience was in good supply. It took a very long time for drinks and food to arrive. The table behind us arrived after us and actually finished their meal before we received our entrees. A comp round if drinks was sent over but that was also late. The young server tried but the orders got mixed up by the paper orders going into the kitchen.....Something like that. The food was just ok but if service and timing was better it would have been fine. The Service charge was automatically added for our 6 diners..... Having worked in restaurants as a teenager it was a reminder of what happens when proper management is lacking. A manager never stopped by to apologize or assist. I attended the July 4th event at Barley Beach House, and unfortunately, it was not worth the nearly $150 per ticket we paid. I'll start with the positives: the staff was friendly and professional, the crowd was great, and the overall atmosphere was enjoyable. Those were easily the best parts of the evening. However, the food was extremely disappointing. It lacked flavor, seasoning, and creativity. The drink selection was also underwhelming. They had already run out of certain beers, and the cookie dessert that was advertised was never available. One thing that was misleading is that the event wasn't actually held at the Barley Beach House restaurant. It took place on the beach, away from the restaurant itself. Although it was advertised as a 21+ event, attendees weren't even allowed to walk into the water to wet their feet. I understand safety concerns and the lack of lifeguards, but for an adults-only event, I expected a little more flexibility. The beach restroom conditions were also unacceptable. They were dirty and had no toilet paper, which should never happen at an event charging premium ticket prices. To make matters worse, a severe thunderstorm rolled in, and the fireworks were completely canceled. While I understand that weather is beyond anyone's control, there was nothing else about the event that justified the cost. Overall, while I appreciated the friendly staff and fun crowd, the food, drinks, amenities, and overall value fell far below expectations. I would not recommend this event, and I would not return. read more

The long black hair in my food wasn't so cute. The lack of anything apart from "I spoke to my boss, and we will take it off your bill" was surprising. Who would want to pay for food like that? In a quality restaurant, the manager would have come over - but not here. The Barley Beach House is on my avoid list. read more

Trust the reviews! Went here with my two daughters for a late lunch on a Sunday around 2pm. The place wasn't too crowded, and the hostess sat us outside at a table with a great view. Unfortunately, that's about where the good part of the review ends. We sat for about 10 minutes without anyone coming over to greet us. I eventually had to flag down a busser and ask if we actually had a waiter. She apologized and went to check. About 5 more minutes later, our server finally arrived, introduced himself, and took our order. We ordered one appetizer, one kids' meal, and two lunch entrees. Once the order was in, the food actually came out in relatively good time. Unfortunately, while we were waiting, we got to witness a few other examples of the restaurant's apparent time-management strategy. One party actually walked past our table to ask a waitress where their food was because they had been waiting so long. After sitting back down and waiting another 10 minutes, the woman and her husband finally got up and left. Meanwhile, the table next to us waited at least 15 minutes just to get their check. At this point, I started wondering if the entire restaurant was operating on a different time zone. There was only one waitress that seemed like she was hustling. The rest of the staff seemed like they were partly sedated with no sense of urgency. The food may be perfectly fine, but the service is painfully slow and seems completely disorganized. If you have the entire afternoon or evening to spare and don't mind waiting around, this might be your place. The service was very disappointing, especially for such a beautiful and exclusive location. We arrived right at opening time. First, we were given a menu that did not include breakfast. Then we received a breakfast menu, but were later told that breakfast is only served on weekends. We tried to order guacamole, but were told it was unavailable. There was another dish we tried to order and again they said that they don't have it. We ordered the tuna sandwich, but a completely different dish was brought to the table. Since we had already waited more than 30 minutes, I decided not to send it back and wait even longer. I believe it was tuna tartare, and unfortunately I did not enjoy it at all. We also ordered the hummus plate, which was disappointing. We came hungry, ordered two appetizers, and neither of us could finish our food because we simply didn't like it. The cappuccinos were good compared to the food . We were charged full price for both dishes, even for the one we didn't order)) and when I was handed the pen to sign the receipt, it leaked ink all over my hands. I highly recommend this place if you are on the Oakland beach. The lifeguards close down at 6 pm and you make resy to sit on the patio facing the beach under the umbrella. Definitely specific your preference for the beach facing patio because you will end up sitting by door and the ice cream cooler cart with no view of the beach. They have kids menu for $13-16 but doesn't Come with drinks or dessert. For a family Of 4 expect to spend $100 - extra if you get drinks and dessert... we had the cheesecake and churros read more

Been here a few times before , but this experience wasn't really very good . That little piece of Salmon costed $14 dollars and it was the driest salmon I ever had . Service wasn't that great either , only one bartender and too many people at the bar and outside . You basically had to chase the bartender while seating at the bar . The place is adorable and the beach view is great . But looks like they also changed the menu and all they have are burgers and a whole bunch of fried food :( just what you need when it's 90 degrees out ( NOT ) . We came here with two other families and were really impressed by how accommodating the staff was. They patiently helped us choose between several seating options - outdoors, indoors, and even another indoor space around the back- and made switching tables a breeze. The food was a bit pricey for what it was, but you're definitely paying for the beautiful Rye Beach views. We ordered burgers, coconut shrimp, French toast, guacamole, and brunch sliders. Even the manager noticed we were waiting an extended amount of time as he spoke to my daughter when she went to bathroom, not once did he come over to the table though. This is what happens when proper management is lacking. I worked in hospitality for over 20 years and the paying customer should always be happy and assisted if they a re not. I went on July 4th, 2026. It was very disappointing for the amount of money (&140-$150) that I spent. The Hawaiian dance was a little disappointing because it was more salsa but still very fun and I got up and danced. The worst part was how they advertised it was 'rain or shine' and had no backup plan for the storm that happened. We were still able to get drinks, but we all just stood in the restaurant. He crafted the most amazing drink call Smoke on the Sound--perfectly balanced with Mezcal, refreshing, and just the right amount of lime and grapefruit juice. His spicy Paloma was next-level too--bold, zesty, and with just the right kick. You can tell he puts real skill and care into every drink he makes. The Barley Beach House is in a beautiful setting overlooking the beach. There were 5+ open tables, so we were seated right away and our drinks arrived quickly. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. We only ordered appetizers (the hummus and the coconut shrimp). After waiting 20+ minutes for the appetizers (did I mention that the place was not super busy?), the coconut shrimp was overcooked, dry and very crunchy (difficult to cut). We were never asked if we wanted another drink. As a matter of fact, my companion had to ask 3 different food servers for a glass of water. We were a party of 4 . The guacamole and chips were great, and then from there it went downhill. The fried calamari and cherry peppers were overcooked as well as the coconut shrimp. Three out of four burgers were not prepared properly... Wrong cheese, undercooked/basically raw bacon... And overcooked burgers, the bread on the lobster roll was completely charred... I've always loved this restaurant -- the food is consistently great, the drinks are excellent, and the ocean view is unbeatable. It's a spot we genuinely look forward to visiting, which makes it hard to write this. During a recent brunch, the indoor entertainment completely missed the mark. A live drummer was playing along with the DJ, but it felt chaotic and out of sync. The drum bursts were jarring, inconsistent, and loud, and at one point he wandered the restaurant shaking an instrument like a surprise party crasher. It was more awkward than festive. Unfortunately, we weren't the only ones who felt this way. Nearby tables looked visibly uncomfortable, and we watched a tense moment where the drummer inserted himself into a group's photo and had to be asked (twice) to move. We say this as longtime fans of the place -- if that same performer is part of the brunch experience again, we'll likely sit it out. The vibe just didn't match the quality we've come to expect, especially for the price point. Here's hoping next time we're back, it's without the surprise percussion solos. read more

The views here are simply breathtaking. I'm looking forward to sitting outside in the summer. The spiced hot chocolate was strong but enjoyable on a hot day. I had the Shor rib grilled cheese, which was an experience with every bite. It was hot, the rib was tender, cheesy to perfection, and the tomato soup provided the best dipping sauce. My girlfriend had the Wicked Tuna, which was generously portioned and spicy with the Wasabi. To top it off we had the brownie sundae. It was hot, gooey, and rich. Terrible service and not great food. Waitstaff took our order and got it wrong 4x. That is not an exaggeration. Our waitress was new and person training her did not exactly fix the mistakes. We told them in advance it was our anniversary and nothing was done, no acknowledgement of any kind. They blamed it on the fact that "everyone is new and it's the first day." Came here for my birthday and it was such a beautiful view. I had the steak and fries and my boyfriend had the lobster roll and neither of them disappointed. We came in the fall so it was a bit chilly but I imagine it's the perfect place to grab lunch in the summer. Rye Beach is literally across so you have a great view with your food and can walk on the boardwalk to burn off the calories right after. The service was also really good. read more

Overall I think this deserves 3.5/5 stars. Service was a 3/5 but you can tell there were only a few waiters/waitresses. And food was 4/5. They're probably understaffed and with covid a lot of places are understaffed so I get it. The food was pretty good though and the overall ambiance was great. Brussel sprouts: would recommend. I liked the combo with feta cranberries and walnuts and balsamic glaze Clam pizza: this was my least favorite. I actually didn't enjoy it. The bacon was overpowering, probably to over-compensate for not enough clams. And the cheese was confusing. It was liquid-y and they easily could've just stuck to one type of cheese...and less of it The Cali turkey burger was good and I liked that their homemade fries aren't super dark and oily. The wicked tuna was probably my favorite. The aioli wasn't too strong and the tuna steak was cooked perfectly. The eggplant meatballs were decent. Today for lunch we dined at this restaurant and had a fantastic experience. The service was excellent, and the food was amazing. Our group of eleven enjoyed a variety of dishes, including steak sandwiches, sushi, salmon, and salad. Every dish was well-prepared and delicious. The atmosphere was also quite pleasant, making it a great place for a group outing. We were all impressed by the attention to detail and the quality of both the food and the service. As a former resident of Rye I HAD to take my boyfriend here for the views and memories. - It was the weekend before Christmas.. We sat by the windows overlooking the beach which was gorgeous. The deco was festive and the staff was friendly. - We ordered the short rib melt with a hot toddy hot chocolate and the wicked tuna sandwich with the wasabi on the side. The short rib grilled cheese was an experience! The bread was buttered and slightly toasted, the meat was perfectly seasoned and the sandwich was served with a small serving of tomato bisque. The Wicked Tuna Sandwich was delicious and the wasabi sauce wasn't . Its served raw, i asked for it to be cooked at medium rare. Definitely recommended. It was a pleasant surprise.
