I ate at the Barley Beach House for lunch today and it was great! This was my second time here and my experience both times were pretty similar. First, the view is amazing! I love being able to sit outside and look at the beach. The drinks are always good! The first time I went I had a regular mojito, today I had the Sunshine Froze and it was very good. The food is pretty tasty as well. I had the chicken Caesar wrap and my friend had the lobster roll. We both enjoyed our meals. I totally forgot to take pictures of them as we were enjoying the view and the conversation so much! The service, as others mention, is slow. However, if you are looking for a relaxing, non-rushed meal, with a great view, this place is perfect I'll definitely be back with my friend! It's become our favorite place to meet up. read more

Came back here for a second time on the Fourth of July holiday for lunch. We had a great table on the patio overlooking the beach. We decided to try the frozen margarita xl. I liked it, it could use a little less agave, but overall I enjoyed it. We then ordered the wicked tuna sandwich, and the fish and chips. Both entrees were excellent. The wicked tuna sandwich is a full tuna steak with avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato and this really good wasabi mayonnaise. It can get a little messy, but it's worth the extra napkins. The fish & chips was cooked well, the charred lemon slice was a nice touch and fries were tasty. I didn't try the coleslaw but it comes with that as well. Overall I think this deserves 3.5/5 stars. Service was a 3/5 but you can tell there were only a few waiters/waitresses. And food was 4/5. They're probably understaffed and with covid a lot of places are understaffed so I get it. The food was pretty good though and the overall ambiance was great. Brussel sprouts: would recommend. I liked the combo with feta cranberries and walnuts and balsamic glaze Clam pizza: this was my least favorite. I actually didn't enjoy it. The bacon was overpowering, probably to over-compensate for not enough clams. And the cheese was confusing. It was liquid-y and they easily could've just stuck to one type of cheese...and less of it The Cali turkey burger was good and I liked that their homemade fries aren't super dark and oily. The wicked tuna was probably my favorite. The aioli wasn't too strong and the tuna steak was cooked perfectly. The eggplant meatballs were decent. I have had the Buffalo Chicken wrap which I thought was very good. Nice Fish Tacos, Salads and Plantains are very good also. I will say that I wouldn't waste my time again on the steak sandwich ever again, not even close to what the photos show. The steak itself was tasty, and cut in cubes, but there were about 6 cubes on one side of the sandwich and 3 cubes on the other side. So, I will say don't waste your money, 25 bucks on a steak sandwich. Very disappointed in that one. I was thinking to give back, but it's not something I normally do. We were seating inside, right by the entrance to the kitchen, with blaring loud music playing. It took 20 mins to order, and then we waited 45 minutes without the food coming out. We have two young kids who could not tolerate waiting more than an hour for their food. This place is horribly disorganized, and understaffed. We had 12:30 reservations today and were seated at a table in the full sun. We asked to be moved to a table with an umbrella and we were told they were "reserved". Well we also had a reservation. The hostess said she would get someone to move an umbrella and disappeared never to be seen again. Our poor waiter got stuck dealing with us as we insisted we needed shade He spoke to the manager who said the umbrella tables were reserved and we could eat inside. We repeated we had a reservation and finally were able to move. Neither the hostess nor the manager came over they dumped everything on the poor waiter. Terribly poor management at this place. Came here for a friends birthday recently. All of us wound up ordering a bunch of different appetizers and picking on everything. I would love to start off by saying the location is amazing! It is right on the beach/water and it is a really nice spot to sit back and relax. For cocktails- I went for the barley Bloody Mary. The way they decked it out was amazing, but the bloody itself leaves little to be desired. My second choice was one of their pumpkin beers on tap which was nice and cold and I LOVED how they rimmed it with both cinnamon and sugar which perfectly brought out the taste of the beer even more. The food- I was very disappointed. The philly rolls tasted like it was frozen and just thrown into a microwave, the pretzel was delicious but the cheese was depressingly sad, the New England clam chowder tasted like it came out of a can of Campbell's, and finally the calamari wasn't too horrible but I can easily say I have had much better. The service- cocktails took forever to come to the table and some of the food came out cold which just means it's been sitting in the window too long. I usually wouldn't mind this but it wasn't too busy the day we went so that was a little disappointing. Honestly the only reason I would return would be for the scenery. I do NOT recommend this place. The wait staff was great. But, the $18.00 guacamole and chips had old guacamole. I Asked for a fresh serving of guacamole. It looked better, but it was also old which I discovered after a few bites when I found brown / black portions. I let my server know. The manager came over. I asked for salsa so I could eat the chips. I was given about 4-6 table spoons of salsa AND WAS CHARGED $ 9.00 for the chips and .25 cents of salsa! This place is beautiful! I came today for my daughters birthday lunch and it was incredible. The food came out quickly and everything was delicious. The adults had the crispy calamari, potstickers, and the barley burger. They sang happy birthday to my daughter and it was so sweet! As the waitresses passed with drinks I saw a piña colada and immediately asked my eldest daughter if we could come back for dinner and drinks and we DID! My two daughters and I enjoyed the beautiful views of the beach and I ordered the crispy calamari AGAIN because it was so good. The piña colada did not disappoint! It was so nice I ordered it twice! The restaurant was packed when we got there for dinner but the service was still spectacular. When dessert came around, the waiters and waitresses sang happy birthday for my youngest daughter again and she loved it! A special thank you to our waitresses Harleigh and Devon for making my daughters birthday extra special! Yep, won't return after this second visit. Shame as the location and view are a real hit. Why? Here we go: Service: wow, unorganized resulting in VERY slow service. I usually will forgive this when the food is good but in this case, that didn't happen. They have a bee problem. Yep, they are everywhere. I killed 4 and they kept coming. We really couldn't sit comfortably. Mexican salad with Seared Tuna: Meh ... not terrible. Zing in the dressing that I like. Unfortunately that was it. The seared tuna was overcooked, almost looked like it was nuked. Bit disappointing. Guac and Chips: Guac was without taste ... mashed avocado without salt or lime ... at least not perceptible in the flavor. Chips were oily. A first for me. Brussel Sprouts: Too much char ... unfortunately it tasted burnt. Also had a white sauce drizzled on it. I'd save the drizzle. There is just too much going on here to merit a good rating. Shame as it's location makes this a huge missed opportunity for the Rye community where prices are not an issue for most patrons. Prime candidate for one of those restaurant rescue shows. read more

You know exactly what you're getting here - unbeatable views, great ambience, good food, some of it is pricey but you're literally ON the beach. Having a good, mid-priced restaurant with a fun vibe in a spectacular location is wonderful. Service is not always great, but since the pandemic, I think it's a killer to find and retain restaurant staff. It gets busy, and then slow, because lots of people want to come here. You can occasionally have a bad experience here, and I feel for the people whose food was not great or who waited a long time for their food. But we live in Rye and this is a restaurant that we truly look forward to visiting. read more

My pregnant wife and I come in and are waiting for a table, one opens up and we're about to be seated, a new couple walks in and the manager greets them but not us as apparently they were his friends. The manager literally gives his friends the table in front of us and screws us out of the table. You never do that to new customers, we gave the place the benefit of the doubt despite bad reviews and the manager does something like that. I don't care if you know those people, you don't build a business off that and it's a terrible thing to do especially to a pregnant woman standing there waiting. What a fantastic evening we had at the Barley Beach House in Rye tonight ! The lobster rolls ( both the Connecticut and the New England ) and the famous Barleys hamburgers were absolutely delicious... accompanied by yummy pina coladas perfectly suited for the ambiance. Saw the 3 stars and still gave it a chance. I wrote a request on OpenTable to be sat along the fence. We got sat on the main level with no view to look at. Then I saw another party of two sat at a better table. As a hostess that also uses OpenTable, customers' requests are important to me. Our appetizer came with our main dishes which is not normal. That annoyed me. Eggplant tower was decent. Asked for the steak medium rare and we got it well done. The corn was absolutely horrible. It's clearly frozen corn and tasted chewy. The sweet potato fries were decent but I don't see how you can mess up french fries. Pasta was over cooked and needed more sauce. Tiramisù was the only thing that was good. Waiter was nice but seemed so rushy. Prob won't return but it's a shame cause of the location. I guess I have to wait until I move to Florida in a few months. read more

The renovation is beautiful. Cocktails are delicious, some are super sweet. The prices are high. Menu descriptions are inaccurate!!! Kitchen service disorganised - food not coming out at the same time for larger groups and food is cold. Calamari - it mentioned nothing about a honey glaze so i was surprised when it was sweet. (Why ruin a savory claasic with honey?) The server confirmed that it is supposed to be that way. If the description included honey, i would not have ordered it. It also comes with fried hot peppers (also not in description but a lovely surprise). Couldn't eat the bottom half of the basket because it was soaked in honey and gross (see photo). For $16, it is unacceptable. I might've been ok with it if it was $10. Streetcorn - smelled amazing. It was cold and undercooked. $6. Unacceptable. Wicked tuna sandwich - delicious, reasonably priced. No complains here :) Generally same issues as last year. Doesn't look like lessons were learned and corrections implemented. Very disappointing. Reservations for 2 people: Took over an hour to receive our appetizers. An hour and a half to receive our entrees. In the meantime, ordered drinks, those came in about 15 minutes. Ordered "Ridin' the Wave" off the drink menu, waitress came back with beer. I said it was a cocktail. She said that should've specified the cocktail since there was also a beer called "Riding in the Wave" ... looked at the beer menu and the beer was actually called "Montauk Wave Crashers", close but no cigar. Got the bill, was charged for a "Montauk Wave Crashers" plus the "Ridin' the Wave" cocktail. (basically you pay for their mistakes so just say no if it wasn't what you ordered) Half the umbrella lights worked. The food was okay - really not worth the prices. Enjoyed a lovely dinner here on the deck overlooking the Sound while the kids played mini golf at nearly Rye Playland. We parked in the nearby lot (bring your receipt-Barley House took $5 off our bill) We shared the street corn app. Very good. Hubby loved the shrimp poboy and I had the amazing lobster roll. The food and drink lines were over a 45 minute wait which had to be done 3 times just to get food from the buffet, a drink, and a burger. I would only come back here for the view. There were about three tables full so it's a wonder why it took so long to get our order. Eventually everything came out at once which is not what I expected if ordering drinks and appetizers. I cannot understand how Lump Crab Cocktail came in shreds and sitting on a lettuce leaf on top of melting ice so that it eventually got water mixed in. It came with carrots and celery for decoration. We got the barley burger and cheese pizza which was great. The tuna sandwich came on burnt toast and no wasabi mayo. Great house salad though even though I had to remove two wilted leaves. The steak and eggs were nothing like other pictures and loaded with sweet potatoes. . The meat was colorless and small but split open to look bigger?
