26 Jan 2025 I forgot how good their mashed potatoes are! Got them tonight with my perfectly cooked 8oz filet. Also had the fabulous oysters Rockefeller. Yum. Come here.

I always wanted to go to the barn door since I have been in San Antonio. I finally got to go and it was a great experience. Large establishment that offers a variety of seating for all of your events you could think of. Quality food and service is good. Pleasant people and such a cute western atmosphere. Go check it out. The price is around Texas Roadhouse prices just so you know.

If you're coming for the steak you found the spot. They do provide bread and butter. When you order an entree it comes with your choice of potato style and salad. The sides and salad are okay! The highlight really is the perfectly cooked steak. We shared a 15 oz ribeye. Our waitress even split our salad for us. There is a speakeasy attached but it's reservation by text only.

30 yrs in this town and this was my 1st visit to The Barn Door. Man have I missed out! I'm notoriously picky about steak because most places sell a gray slim flavorless filet with fake grill marks. Why get that when I can make a better steak for 1/2 the price at home? This steak was PHENOMENAL . Cooked perfectly to order, the flavor was thru the roof. You could taste the open grill wood smoke and the seasoning was perfection. I will definitely be back and forth I'll recommend this place to anyone and everyone. The Service was just right: on time, courteous but not hovering. I decided to upgrade to the twice baked potato with jalapeños and cheese - I would definitely recommend that over the regular mashed potato side (which my husband got for comparison). Delicious.

It was a good experience. The service was great and the food was okay. The star of the show were the fresh dinner roles, but everything else was just okay. The ambiance is a little bit of a Time Machine warp of the 70s but it was tidy. Wouldn't know if I'd go back, but glad we tried it out. The salad wasn't too fresh and my steak was cold, but my son was enjoyed his grilled cheese.

Our favorite date day restaurant for lunch. Fantastic menu for lunch. Wonderful and friendly staff.

Wow! My first time to The Barn Door and the food was amazing! I tired the fried mushrooms...they were big. The bacon wrapped chicken....delicious. And the cheese sticks...yum!! The bacon wrapped dates...order them! None of the food was super hot but it wasn't cold. We were in a Large group so the plates were passed around for a hot minute. All of it was super tasty and I would order all of them again! For my entree I ordered the chopped steak with the cheese on the side. The steak was delicious and wrapped in bacon! The cheese sauce was also good. I took it home to eat later. My side was a baked potato. It was under cooked. and the potato was hard but for not being upgraded, the regular potato had cheese, sour cream, and bacon bits. I took it home to reheat and make it softer. I ordered thousand island dressing with my salad. All of the dressings are homemade. There was green goddess and ranch that was brought for the table. All were tasty but none of them were as amazing as I'd hoped. I was with a big group and we could be hard to serve, but the food was delicious enough for me to warrant another trip back with the family. Also there was local and seasonal beer on tap Which I very much appreciated! Shiner Cheer was delicious! I will definitely be back! Thanks Barn Door for a great time!

I'm in San Antonio on a temporary assignment, and I was tasked to find a good spot for dinner with a couple of co-workers, one of whom had to depart early. Not knowing if I would ever see them in person again after this trip, I had to be selective in deciding how best to bid farewell to him, at least for the time being. We had agreed on a nice steak dinner, but left the decision up to me on where to go. I'll be honest here, I was actually looking at a couple of Brazilian steakhouses by the Riverwalk, but as luck would have it, neither had reservations available for that night. I frantically searched online to find the best spot for all three of us, and I chose The Barn Door right off the 410 loop east of the 281. One of my Yelp friends from San Antonio awarded it five stars, and there was also a Yelp check-in offer of a free tea. Also, the prices seemed pretty reasonable, especially compared to other steakhouses in the Alamo City. Reservations were available that night for time slots at 15-minute increments, but oddly enough, not at 7 PM, our agreed upon time. We then agreed 6:45 PM was a good time for dinner, and so I made the reservation, which was done through SpotOn. Two of us arrived at 6:30 PM, and the hostess was willing to seat us even though the third person (not me lol) was a little late. We chose to wait, and then once he arrived, we were taken to our table in the Main Dining room. We were sat at a table between the open kitchen and a wall, which almost looked like a jail. Jewel (sp?) came by to introduce herself as our server. She was just that, a jewel! She did seem a little bashful since it was kind of hard to hear her, but it was only moderately loud at best during our visit, so it wasn't much hard of hearing here. Other than that, I enjoyed having her take good care of us! She started us off with drinks, and that's when I realized I had to check in to show her my Yelp check-in offer. She didn't recognize it at first, and then I had to tell her. I almost thought she was going to charge me for the tea, but luckily she didn't. Each of us chose an appetizer to share with one another. The others chose Fried Mushrooms and Fried Jalapenos. I chose the Wild Boar and Venison Sausages. Each of them came with their own sauce(s), and they were all good! It's worth mentioning there are nuances in the taste profile between Wild Boar and Venison, but they look so similar that even Jewel couldn't tell which was which. Did we care? No. Did we enjoy them? Yes! The others chose the Club Sirloin and Bacon Wrapped Tenderloin Filet as their entrees, both cooked Medium. I went with the 10 oz New York Strip, cooked Medium Well. I think my steak was a little undercooked, but I liked it better than the Ribeye I had at my hotel, which cost more than twice as much! As we were ordering, I didn't realize our entrees would come with a house or Caesar salad as well as a potato side. I had completely overlooked the bottom of the menu specifying that. There weren't that many choices for the potato side. One co-worker chose the mashed potatoes. The other chose the twice baked potato. I went with the (once) baked potato. Jewel asked if I'd like for it to be loaded, to which I answered affirmatively. For the salad, you get a choice of 5-6 dressings. I almost went with my go to, Honey Mustard, until Jewel mentioned there was Creamy Garlic, which sounded delish. And it was! The amount of dressing was pretty generous, and it was a generously-sized salad, much larger than a side salad! I enjoyed the (once) baked potato, which was loaded, but not fully loaded compared to the twice baked. The twice baked had more cheese, and I believe it also had jalapenos, which I didn't taste in my potato. However, there's a small upcharge for the twice baked; I don't recall how much of an upcharge it was. Everything was superb! There wasn't a bad bite that was had amongst the three of us. We had quite a bit of leftovers, and Jewel offered us takeout boxes and bags for each of us. We all enjoyed our meals, and both of my co-workers agreed I made a good choice for dinner that night. None of us had room for dessert, but I didn't want any anyways. Plus, the prices for the desserts weren't even shown on the menu, which I'm not sure why? A Southern Peach Cobbler would have hit the spot, but our appetites were more than satiated on this wonderful evening. In addition to the actual restaurant, there's a meat market as alluded to in the business name, but it was slim pickings at the time we went, at least for the display case out in front. Same with the desserts. We only saw a couple of pies and a cheesecake when we left. The interior decor is really nice! We appreciated how nicely decorated the interior was, and we were even in awe at a portrait of the restaurant from 1953! Thank you Barn Door for a wonderful dinner, and thank you Jewel for the wonderful service and hospitality! Keep up the great work Jewel! :)

I was in town for business and was recommended to stop into Barn Door for dinner. I went with the jumbo fried shrimp and jumbo they were indeed. What was even more jumbo was the massive side of mashed potatoes it came with! When the waiter brought them out, I asked if it was a family style side and he said it was just for me. Maybe this is one of those "everything is bigger in Texas" kind of things but I felt like a lot of it went to waste because after the side salad (also full plate sized), rolls, coleslaw and shrimp, I couldn't put away more than a couple spoons full of potatoes. The food was good but it was a little pricey for someone on a per diem for dinner. Good thing I didn't have lunch before so I had the money for it.

Ask the Community - The Barn Door

Would you consider this place kid friendly?

I don't see why not. While I haven't seen a lot of kids running around, the set up and the staff would easily accommodate a family with kids.

    Is there a kids menu?

Yes. Usually has chicken strips, fried shrimp, pasta, etc...

How do I make a reservation?

    You have to call them.

    Does this restaurant take reservations?

Yes, it does. They also have a private dining room for parties. My favorite is the Ladies filet. The rack of lamb is outstanding if you want to splurge!

Hi do you have happy hour during the week and what are the hours?

Yes we do. From 5pm to 6:30pm

Does this place serve bar drinks, like beer and mixed drinks?

Yes, we have a full service bar.

To start off they serve you bread with a pickled jalapeno cream cheese dip which was the chef (owner?) mother's recipe. So good. I had the lamb chops which were devine. Once we arrive at the restaurant we were greeted like VIPs. We were asked a few times if we were there for a special occasion and I mentioned we were there for our anniversary. We were congratulated and that was it. No other "special" treatment or offers because it was our anniversary. The service, the food, and the overall atmosphere were great. No complaints at all. My only issue was this, as we were preparing to pay the bill, a couple (white couple) was seated next to us and they were asked if they were there to celebrate a special occasion, and she said, "it's our anniversary" and the waiter then offered them a complimentary bottle (or glasses) of champagne! Wait, what??? I thought to myself, nobody offered us (a black couple) any complimentary champagne. A different person came to the table to take my credit card and I asked him about it. He did apologize and offered to bring us a couple of glasses of champagne but it was too late. We were done eating/celebrating and it was time to go home. I was 3 weeks from recovering from heart surgery and this was my first time out in the public to eat since my surgery and I didn't want to let not getting a bottle or glass of champagne ruin my evening with my Queen. This incident it want led me to giving 4 stars instead of 5. How can one couple be offered complimentary champagne and another couple not offered any at all???

It seems like reservations are encouraged. At every visit, the servers greeted me with water and asked for my dietary preferences. You can tell that the servers all work together as I had other servers stop by to pack up my food and refill my water. I do love how they offer to pack up my leftovers and do so very nicely. 1st visit: My server was a sweetheart, very attentive, and super nice! I made reservations for 5PM on a Friday. I was one of the first to arrive, but the restaurant quickly filled up. I opted for the Mezas De Alegria, the server brought out Tirshi, Roasted Cabbage, Steamed Red Snapper, and Olive Oil Cake! All were very tasty, my favorites being the Tirshi and Steamed Red Snapped! I also ordered the Greek Wine flight, I enjoyed the Troupis wine best! Out of all of my dining experiences, this was by far my favorite! 2nd visit: My server was also attentive and kind. This time, I didn't make a reservation, I just walked in but was able to be seated at 11AM on a Sunday. I opted the for Turkish Brunch and the Mint Limonada, and they were able to accommodate my dietary preference! Everything was good once again, my favorites were the Grilled Olive and Tomato Salad, Fire Roasted Peppers, and Shakshuka. The Mint Limonada was too sweet for my preference, I had to water it down with some water. 3rd visit: My most recent server was very sweet and kind but wasn't as attentive. I made reservations for 5PM on Friday. She got held up by a table nearby a couple of times. I tried items from the Culinaria Restaurant Week Menu (Armenian Salad, Texas Waygu Kebabs, and Local Fruit Sorbet) Everything was soo good and flavorful. I really enjoyed the Armenian Salad. The Texas Waygu Kebabs were good, but a little chewy for my preference. They were cooked about Med-Well/Well done, though I prefer my beef to be cooked Medium, but I wasn't asked about my preference. I also wasn't given a steak knife and tried to wait for my server, but she was with another table for a while. I had to use my butter knife... The Local fruit sorbet was very refreshing and a light dessert to end my evening. Overall, great experiences, flavor-packed food! I enjoy Mediterranean food, so I'll be back to try more items off their menu!

It is that restaurant where you should make reservations. It is also a place that emphasizes presentation and service. We came right when it opened and we informed the hostess of our reservations. We were seated in the bar area. Once inside I was struck by its ambience. It is sleek, dark and dare say "sexy." Our server, who was extremely attentive came to our table and took our drink orders. My partner ordered an Old Fashioned and me, a Lagunitas IPA. Whilst waiting for our drinks I looked over the room. One thing I noticed was a barrier that separated the bar area and the dining room. The Social Hour is meant, to socialize. I saw couples leaning into each other. Another group were drinking martinis with a seafood tower, almost touching the ceiling. Conversations were had. Romantic glances were exchanged. It isn't a casual place like Bubba's 33 nor Texas Roadhouse. It feels like a place best suited for a date night or an anniversary. I'm wondering how the dining room area is? The Social Hour does offer some drink and small bites specials. We ordered the kabob with pineapple, brussel sprouts, and sliders. They were all pretty great. It reminded me of the same experience as in partaking in tapas. I would remiss if I didn't relay our service here, it was excellent. Our server, Holiday(I hope I spelled it right.) treated us like we were the only patrons there. I've gone to upscale restaurants where staff looks at you up and down. Or they try to size you up. This is not that place. Which was so refreshing. If this place went above and beyond my expectations why didn't I give it four stars? In my opinion I think that a place that creates an upscale experience needs to have a few beers on tap. Even places like Wing Daddy's or Chili's offers a few beers on tap. Secondly, the bar area seating feels a bit tight. I wonder when the dinner crowd arrives would you be in the lap, of someone else's conversation? I still highly recommend this place. The Social Hour area is perfect for a date or an anniversary. The service and food were both excellent. And I've never been to a place where you are given warm hand towels. It reminded me of that scene with Adam Sandler in "The Wedding Singer" minus Billy Idol.

I'm glad they had room for us but, it's still safe to make reservations. We did not know they are a tapas style restaurant, but that didn't deter us. And we were pleasantly surprised at the size of their "tapas". What we ordered was enough for two people to share. Dumplings - 9/10 Gulf Shrimp & Noodles - 10/10 Blistered Green Beans - 10/10 Ramen - 9/10 Service was great. It's a casual atmosphere, but perfect for an intimate date night.

A bit messy to eat but I would get this again. Udon noodle with pork belly: noodles were kind of irregular in lengths. I really liked the sauce with it but it felt like it was missing something. Light dish. Tc double cheese burger: very strong flavors, somewhat sweet. Dense/heavy dish . Our waiter was quick and friendly. The restaurant lighting was dimmed and gave a more intimate /bar environment. I think the ac was broken here because it was very warm and they had fans going on around the room. I think this place would be good for someone who is prefers an American fusion cuisine that leans heavily on the western style dishes. The fusion elements were cute but I still left unsatisfied but still full. We did not park. We walked here right from the river walk. Not a bad place to go if you arrive in town after 9 pm.

We had a large party of nine and we waited about ten minutes that was great timing. The restaurant offers a full bar with some crafted cocktails. We stated off with some Crispy onion rings which were a perfect start fresh and hot perfectly coated deliciousness. We all ordered meals including steak and shrimp cooked perfectly and seasoned perfectly paired with loaded mashed which was enough for two. Two of us opted for the chicken fried steak. Seasoned and fried to a crisp golden with white gravy and a large heap of skin on mashed that were creamy and delicious. One fried shrimp platter hot and good. One fried catfish which was also prepared perfectly paired with cocktail sauce but they added on the tartar sauce. One kid had sirloin and mashed and she finished the entire steak. One chicken fried chicken which was also good. The portion sizes are generous , hot and fresh. We paired our meal with a few bar cocktails including old fashioned , martini , and margarine tossed in a few beers and we had a time. We weren't rush or slow to get service. All in all we enjoyed the meal , the vibe is good. When weather cooperates they have some outdoor seating options as well. Try it for yourself ! All in was 274.00 before gratuity for nine people and drinks. Good value !
