We planned a trip to The Barn with a senior group. We called weeks ahead and then called again to confirm we were coming. We were told that they do not accept reservations but our party size could be accommodated. The only thing that we were told is that they weren't able to guarantee is if the buffet would be available. We arrived and were told that we could only have the soup and salad bar. I asked if we could be split up into separate tables so we could order off the menu and without hesitation he said no. When I explained that we had been told otherwise, he didn't care. We actually had traveled over an hour to come to this restaurant and the 2 managers couldn't have been more rude and disinterested in our predicament or business. I will never recommend or visit this restaurant again. read more

My only issue was that when I tried to call to give a heads-up on the amount of people or make a reservation the person on the other line was very rude and short with me stating that they don't take reservations and then he hung up. read more

This is our 2nd time visiting "The Barn". It's an old rustic barn refurbished for dinning. It has a buffet wagon, for dinner and lunch. Lunch it's just a huge salad bar. Not sure for dinner how they change it up. But 4 different soups for lunch both times, and the salad bar is kept pretty clean, for buffet. I'm not to much into that any more, and I lived through the "Regan" years, whenever buffet seemed to be the norm. But this place holds it together pretty well. There is a pond out front and shops all on site. So lots to do before and after. All in all it's enjoying and the bathrooms are clean and handicap accessible. Not that we need it, but I like to see places that cater to specific needs. We were in Wooster for graduation weekend. Not having made dinner reservations months in advance, my daughter recommended going to the Sunday buffet at The Barn. Buffets for American food are very difficult to pull off -- food drys out the longer the food sits. Crisp fried chicken gets soggy from the steam table. The food was good, mostly hot and tasty. The items included meatloaf, fried chicken, pot roast, Mac and cheese and the like. The sides were also pretty good. Nothing spectacular but the "stick to your ribs" kind of food and plenty of it. The price of the buffet (15.96) made it a good value. This is a good choice for the weekend because it is a very large restaurant and can easily accommodate large parties. VERY POOR AND EMBARRASSING treatment of customers by a veteran waitress. Senior (80's) couple ordered the "one trip"option to the salad bar with optional price to pay for a bowl of soup. They made their one trip and the gentleman put his pudding in a cup instead of on the plate since pudding has a tendency to run all over the plate. Waitress berated them verbally and more than once for this and when they offered to pay for the pudding (since that seemed to be the issue), she responded with "oh, we'll let it slide THIS TIME". The couple was so embarrassed and upset that they paid for the meal and left without eating. Waitress was very proud to say that she has worked there 37 years but seriously couldn't tell that two 80 year old repeat, loyal customers were not overeating their share. We are spreading the word and no one in our local acquaintance or large local family will eat there again. read more

Came to the barn for dinner. There are some items on the menu that you could order (e.g. Burger, steak), but I've never been quite happy with how they are done. They are always just a little "off". Eg. Burger meat too dense/ not juicy enough? I always go for the all you can eat salad bar. It is nothing to ride home about (the salad bar is pretty standard,I feel that most of their item either came out of cans or boxes). I do like the all you can drink broccoli cheddar soup - to die for ! Their cornbread is pretty good too (not the best but pretty good), put some honey butter on it and it's good to go! I tried a bite of the blueberry bread but urgh...it was too sweet. I come here only for the broccoli cheddar soup and salad (just because I don't want to order anything else from the menu that wouldn't live up to my standards). read more

Visited The Barn for the first time with my family this past weekend, and I was very impressed. We ate at the buffet, which I thought was a really good value, especially for children. The price includes drinks! Some favorites at our table were the shredded beef, broccoli cheese soup, and homemade peanut butter. I have not eaten upstairs at the non-buffet restaurant, but my first impression when reading the menu on their website was "this place is so cheap!" So I was surprised to see reviewers here saying how overpriced it is. Either the prices on their website are not accurate, or these people need to send me some tips for cheap restaurants because I am typically paying way more than this when my family goes out. The best part about this place is the gorgeous setting. They have beautiful landscaping, about a dozen covered bench swings looking out over a pond that is surrounded by a walking path, some kid swings, many ducks and geese, and even dispensers with food to feed them. There are a few shops also on the grounds, including a bouncy house indoor kids play barn. We'll definitely come back and plan to spend a lot more time here on our next visit. read more

I used to love this place. I went there today and it will probably be the last time I go there unless meeting with family members who choose to go there. The buffet was a waste of money and calories. The green beans and corn is unseasoned from the can. The noodles were good and so is the Stovetop dressing. However, I'm pretty sure the left over noodles are put into the broccoli soup, and the left over ham from the salad bar is added to the bean soup because the bean soup has no salt or ham flavor even though there are pieces of ham in it. The mashed potatoes were dried in the pan as was the meatloaf and kielbasa. The turkey and ham is kept in water so the flavor is lost. The salad bar was well stocked thankfully so I was able to enjoy my salad. However, the puddings were also dried on the containers. The dessert looked like they may have been good. However, I only ate a no bake cookie. It was good. Overall, the food was on the bar too long. They needed to add fresh food. Also, they still lay silverware at your table with their bare hands. They clear plates from tables and then handle your silverware with their bare hands. This has always been a pet peeve of mine. I wash my silverware in the restroom when I go in restaurants that do not have pre-wrapped silverware. Today was a waste of my money and I had to eat when I got home. read more

Very clean. Friendly staff. That's the end of my positivities about the current state of the barn Restaurant. The big attraction of the barn is the salad wagon. Used to be the freshest vegetables and delicious homemade breads and soups. In the Covid model, they are requiring customers to still go through the same line but a staff member assembles the plate. It's just not the same. My salad was hard to eat because it was drowned In dressing and seeds. And the freshness was not close to the same level (of salad but especially the bread -like rock hard). The soup was clearly old. The chicken noodle broth was brown. Like beef broth but from being heated too long. They have also raised prices. The waiter insisted that we were not allowed to bring the bread home (which was comical because it was so old... and led me to wonder if they are re-serving it?....) I was so sad. Let's just say if The Barn charged customers based on his/her weight, the average price for regulars would easily pay for his/her gastric bypasses. It's a renovated barn turned into a restaurant. Loaded with Amish, Apostolics, and a sea of bloated white faces wearing oversized t-shirts and elastic waist jeans, it's a wonderful taste of midwestern life and a magnificent way to boost your self-esteem. If you come to the dank, dimly lit basement buffet at the right time, you can wedge your way between a greasy, portly couple to sample a bit of roast beef, fried chicken, meatloaf, pizza, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes and so on. All this costs slightly less than $13. The best time to visit the buffet is when it's crowded to watch the heifers hastily shovel food onto their plates at the hayrack... the food is also fresher as the regulars consume twice their weight in one sitting. If the thought of this disgusts you and you'd like to see sunlight, you may always eat upstairs for under $10 a plate of food. For you health-conscious folk, there's a salad bar upstairs. The Glenn Beck groupies like to believe they're eating healthy by cramming tons of iceberg lettuce and slathering high-fructose corn syrup onto a plate. Upstairs, you get a lovely view of the pond and white children wearing Hollister offering ducks empty carb bread. After you're done stuffing 4k calories into your face in one sitting, you may visit the toy, wood-working, or knick-knack gift shop where housewives load up on pointless crap to stuff into cheap, cookie-cutter home on 3 acres of land. After this, you can make your way past the parking lot loaded with Christian-based bumper stickers to the pond and watch the ducks from either the gazebo or swings. I grew up in a Mennonite and Amish community and was a little excited about being able to partake in some old food comforts. This was not it. Nothing tasted homemade at the Barn. The mashed potatoes tasted like they were out of a box, the gravy out of a can, and the mac and cheese out of the freezer. Even the desserts tasted pre-prepared. I hope I am wrong about this, but in the end it doesn't really matter as it was not edible. I have been twice (out-of-town visitor's request) and had similar experiences. A reviewer below described the look and smell of the buffet dining area as that of an old church basement. This is a perfect description of the atmosphere. I want to provide a positive note: there were some authentic "salads" on the salad bar. If you do go, look for the "salad" made with frozen whipped topping, marshmallows, and canned fruit. That is about as authentic as it gets. Keep in mind that the "salad" was the highlight. If you want Mennonite/Amish cooking, then drive yourself 4.5 hours away to the Essenhaus in Middlebury, IN. A good friend of mine gave us a gift certificate to this restaurant and we took advantage of her generosity to spend a Sunday afternoon here. There is a nice pond with a small fountain next to the restaurant and the view was pretty. We were given a choice of eating on the 1st floor off the menu or go down to the basement for their buffet; we opted for the buffet. We were seated near the buffet line but unfortunately the atmosphere in this room was dark and unappealing. While our server was friendly, I am afraid she was far too busy to be attentive to our table. She was assigned to other larger tables near us. The food was unappetizing to look it and tasted like it looked. The vegetables tasted like it came from cans, and the meats were presliced, soaking in liquid (ham, turkey, sausage). I tried their chicken noodle soup and found it to be too starchy, and under-seasoned. My dining partner and I were very disappointed with the food at this restaurant. I was late for the rehearsal dinner here (driving in from Chicago took a bit longer than anticipated) but they held a tray of food. It was served family style, which meant a heaping plate each of fried chicken, corn, mashed potatoes with gravy, some sort of pulled meat....and cream pies. The fried chicken was DELICIOUS. Plus there was a large salad bar, bread bar with reportedly to die for honey butter and some hearty soups. Not sure how authenticly Amish it all is, as I have no experience with that. The giant lake is very pretty and the conversion of the barn into a restaurant is pretty dang cool. We were greeted promptly and with friendly staff all around, and the service was good. The food is weak sauce. I mean if Cracker Barrel figured it out, I'd think a place called The Barn would have some unique, home style type foods. The lunch menu consisted of generic burgers and sandwiches, nothing special about any of them. No home baked bread to select from as buns, no variety of cheeses or toppings, just BLAH. They do have a quite hearty salad and soup bar (they call the wagon), and it was well stocked and fresh, but all the toppings and sides (coleslaw, pudding, fruit, etc) came from cans. I was really hoping for some fresh fruit and homemade salads and soup. Nope. I ordered a grilled chicken wrap and the hubby ordered the turkey club. I was expecting the club to be those stacked type sandwiches, but it was on a burger style bun with shredded turkey - weird. The grilled chicken wrap was really lackluster and I only ate half of it. My hubby also had a cub of chicken noodle soup and it was obviously out of a can with excessive noodles and little chicken to be found. I was not pleased at all with this place. This place is to die for!! I especially recommend the soup and salad wagon added on to your meal or even just eat that for your whole meal. It goes beyond the typical salad bar fare and offers a wide variety of options to choose from. Also, you get lots of food if you order off the menu and it is a good value. My suggestion: get an entree that comes with two sides and add on the salad bar. Load up on the salad bar there and take some of your entree home to eat for lunch throughout the week. I have been disapointed with the Barn the last two times we've gone. It's just not the quality that we have come to expect. We love the Buffet downstairs. It is not as visually pleasing as the upstairs dining area, but the food makes up for it. I love their swiss steak with gravy over mashed potatoes. The salad bar huge and is well stocked. The bread and deserts are homemade. It is very kid friendly and wheel chair accessible. We love the country store. They have all type of candy, dry goods, and misc. kitchen things. The setting for The Barn is pretty slick; an old school barn with a scenic view of a big pond is really tranquil. The decor and how the servers and hostess were all dressed in period milkmaid-type dresses was interesting too (though I'm sure they probably hate it). The menu consisted of plenty of appealing options, but not many of the healthier variety. I could have gone with the grilled fish (pretty sure it was tilapia, but can't remember), but instead I opted for the soul and salad bar. The $2 discount on it for the winter months helped along my decision. The lettuce was crisp and fresh, and there were the standard things you expect to see at a typical salad bar, but nothing that really grabbed me. Also, nothing was labeled! For soups, they had five different types ou, but I can only guess what they actually were because again: NO LABELS! My best guess: beef & vegetable, chicken noodle, ham & bean, chili, and cheesy broccoli. I tried the beef & veggie first, and it was easily the best (also, the only one I had seconds of). The rest were rather non-descript. Cheesy broccoli never found its way into one of my bowls though, too cheesy for my latest attempt at eating healthy. Plus side: bathrooms were spotlessly clean. Overall it was a decent meal, but nothing I would make a special trip for. I would love to give a 2.5 star review, but since that's not possible I'll go 3, based on the good service I received. read more

My wife and I decided to drive the 50 minutes from our house to try "The Barn's" buffet. The restaurant above, and the buffet down below in the basement, are two separate entities. We did not go upstairs to the restaurant, so I have nothing to say about that part of the establishment. The dining area of the buffet reminded us of a old church basement. Low ceiling, many, many, rectangular tables all covered with the same plastic tablecloth. Nothing on the walls to speak of for decoration. If you're looking for a cozy ambience, I'm afraid this isn't it. The staff was friendly and efficient and the place looked clean. The food was okay. There was a nice variety of ham, meat loaf, chicken, ocean perch, shrimp, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, etc. The salad bar was exceptional. It was clean with a lot of variety. There was an area with assorted breads, butter and spreads. In the way of desserts, they had apple crisp, brownies, cookies, sheet cakes, and self serve ice cream. Again, the food was okay. Nothing stood out. Would we drive 50 minutes again and come back? I don't think so. read more

My husband and I stopped here on our way to Berlin. I have liked this place in the past and when we had out of town guests we would always bring them here....but not after today --1/2/18-- ... The burger was so dry and tasteless he didn't even finish it... My salad bar was also pretty tasteless EXCEPT for the sour green peas!!! I believe the reason for that is when they re-stock they just go ahead and but the new right on top ... I do believe it is suppose to be first in/ first out!! Today the Broccoli Cheddar was so runny and also tasteless---That was a HUGE disappointment. Our server was just O.K. pleasant but never got a refill on my water or ice tea. Now the main reason for the 1 star rating.... as we were paying the girl asked how was everything....
