[Thought I'd posted this at the time, but apparently not] Back at the end of May, I dropped into the Berkeley Boathouse; it's a beloved occasional splurge, a rare spot on the water with fun noshes and beverages and usually lovely staff. It was crowded, with no one at the host stand. I waited a few minutes until a server recognized and very kindly greeted me, then started leading me outside, where she knows I always sit (it was chilly and almost no one else was out there). All of a sudden, finally, the host (first name starts with D? Maybe Dj?) appeared and loudly rebuked the server with an accusatory "What are you doing?!" - in full view and hearing of myself and other guests. The server carefully explained that she was showing me to an outside (not inside) seat, at which the host dismissively said, "Oh, ok - do what you want," and turned her back. I was stunned by her rudeness (to both the server and myself) and inexplicable anger, by the explicit public shaming, when the server did everything right (and professionally), and should be lauded for same. (She's always been wonderful, and is one of the reasons I keep returning.) Ever since this incident I've avoided the Boathouse, though I really want to support its employees (including a different, delightful host on my previous visit). Gratuitously treating people under your management (if that's the case) like this is unforgivable. Power-tripping is not an asset. It also became clear that the host's approach to men is radically different and much more respectful, from customers at the bar to other employees. There's a lot to unpack here, with great need for basic training and human socialization. Or a change in job. read more

The Berkeley boathouse (at the DoubleTree) breakfast is worth checking out. They have a wonderful menu and their meals are consistently on point. Beyond that the service is friendly and efficient even when they are busy. Once you enjoy your meal, the views of the Berkeley Marina and the bay are amazing. You won't be disappointed. read more

Was happy to dine here. It's inside a double tree, and you can see the dock from their outdoor seating. Calm location. The servings were average sized but quality! The outdoor seating is medium sized but since my date and I were there on a Tuesday night, we were able to catch extra time by the fireplace with no complaints from staff. Absolutely wonderful! Had an amazing view of the boats and the service was incredible. Went here for my birthday with no reservation and it was not too busy at all. Even when more people started to come in the staff would refill our waters multiple times and make sure we were happy. I got a free slice of cheesecake set with a candle and the food was great. Fair pricing as well got a place of chicken tenders and fries for $14. read more

We drove down last year for their special Christmas menu and despite a delayed wait til they finally opened the restaurant, the food and ambiance was pretty good. we wanted to give them a 2nd chance this Christmas and booked our reservation for 12:30 this year since they opened earlier. As we sat down, we learned they're only serving brunch to our dismay. Our wait staff had no clue about a Christmas menu. No where on the website does it say what hours the "christmas special" is served or that its apparently a dinner only menu. This shouldve been made clear on the site as there were other guests also inquiring. The brunch menu was your typical/basic brunch - not even a few Christmasy items to choose from. The Christmas special menu should've been available starting after noon. Don't think we'll be back again next year - this place seems a bit disorganized in general. read more

It's a restaurant attached to a hotel but can be accessed separately. Reservations are recommended but most likely not if a hotel guest. The outside area is wonderful and next to the water with heaters. It's a great location to share drinks and enjoy the Sunset. My party had the Chicken Wings and also the Brussel sprouts for appetizers. They were both delicious. Even though they had a fine menu, we ordered their Thanksgiving Special. The Prime Rib was some of the finest meat selected. It was flavorful with little fat. The cheese potato was a large portion while the bread was unique. Unlike the usual muffin, we were given what appeared to be baked whipped bread. It was very good and had me wanting more. The final item in our selection was creamed spinach. I'm not a fan of this veggie so am unable to gage it's quality. The final stage of the meal brought us much delight. The main menu cheesecake was unbelievable and could rival any dessert from the Cheesecake Factory. The Bread Pudding was ill named for it didn't have the name of Chocolate Bread Pudding. If it had, then it would have been perfect. The pumpkin pie ended our flight. It is recommended for it tasted like Thanksgiving but was more of a tart than a true slice of pie. I would absolutely return to this eatery for the customer service was second to none. This restaurant was the only one in my history that refilled our wine glasses and directly talked to the manager when she made her rounds to ensure... satisfaction. read more

Had fun eating dinner at the Boathouse with friends while enjoying the trio band Tradewinds. Almost like we were on a warm Island if it weren't for the Berkeley evening fog and cold. Food was enjoyable. We had cheeseburgers, crab rolls, clam chowder, flatbread pizzas, steak and dessert if apple crisp and chocolate cake. Service was fast and attentive. And the vibe was positive. Awful service. Food was cold, server was nowhere to be found. Had to ask twice for missing items, which didn't come until we were done with the meal. We complained but they didn't ask if we wanted to speak with a manager, and didn't offer a discount. On top of that, their credit card machine wasn't working and they said it would take 10-15 min to run the charge if we couldn't pay in cash. The clam chowder is good here. I also ordered the Waygu flat iron steak with mashed potatoes with fried green beans. It's not really waygu though. The meat seemed like it was very lean and tough almost. But overall it was a good. Breakfast was to go, I ordered the regular eggs, sausage and country potatoes. Their pork breakfast sausage are plump and juicy. Normal eggs and large cut county potatoes with onion and bell pepper that is seasoned. The four stars comes from the amazing view from the restaurant. You can dine outside and watch beautiful boats docked in the marina or taking off. I came on a Sunday which was a perfect day. I believe it's part of a hotel which is great for if you want to stay somewhere & decide to get brekke afterwards. When I first arrived it was pretty much no one there. But then I soon realized most of the people were seated outside because it was such a nice day. I asked if I could sit bar side & they told me that area was closed..um okay! I got seated & my waiter Jin was so nice! Me and my friend had questions about certain menu items & he told us how good they were & if we should share it or not. Now the food..didn't disappoint! The Avocado toast presentation was so pretty that I didn't want to eat it lol but it was also a big portion & delicious. I got the simple brekke which you can't go wrong with it. I forgot what my friend ordered but he said it was good! The one thing that had me confused was that I asked for a mimosa flight & I was told because the bartender isn't there, I couldn't get it. First of all, can I just say how stylish, easygoing, and comforting this place is! I absolutely love it here. It's not noisy at all. Food tastes good! Stayed at the hotel and came here for dinner and breakfast. The ambiance was nice, but the food at dinner was disappointing (and took forever). For the steep prices you pay, we expected better tasting food but everything fell short. We tried the mahi mahi and wagyu steak - both overcooked, veggie risotto was overwhelming with contrasting flavors that did not go well together, the cioppino was too sweet and heavy on herbs, even my 5yr old who loves pizza, did not like her pizza flatbread as it was overly saucy and too much oregano. Breakfast food was better as it's simply eggs, toast, the usual fare (still at steep prices). The service, however, felt like there was a swarm of staff but no one knew what was going on or all were on training wheels. We repeatedly had to ask for items (highchair, waters, cream for coffee, togo boxes...) Overall, it's great to have at least one restaurant onsite, but for the price you pay, we expected better food and service. read more

Since we stayed at the Doubletree for our anniversary, our sister decided to take us out for brunch to celebrate. Unbeknownst to us, our younger brother surprised us as well and he showed up to eat with us!!! Although it was a little cooler than usual, we were thankful that the hostess seated us next to the fire pit. Both the hostess and our server, Mely, were so polite and courteous, even recommending the most popular brunch items at the Boathouse. My wife and sister ordered their go-to brunch item, Eggs Benedict, and my brother and I ordered the Boathouse Breakfast. Everything was brought out in proper time, including the coffee, which was refilled every 10 minutes and neither creamer nor sugar were an issue as our table had ample amounts of each. I went here with a friend because the reviews where solid. First off, its inside the Double Tree Hotel in Berkeley. I didn't know this. You do have to park with the hotel guests but they comp the ticket if you eat at the restaurant. The hotel and restaurant first floor is newly renovated and very nice. Walking in I had a high expectations. We got seated right away and had a nice view of the marina, even though we sat inside. We got the Korean wings to start, which were really good. They had a nice heat to them along with a crunchy-ness that was appreciated. I got the burger and my friend got the fish-n-chips. I do want to say that this place was very pricey. In total for the app, two entrees, and one soft drink it costs $90. The burger and fish came with fries which were lukewarm and seemed to be reheated. It was very much a let down. My burger was good, I would have liked a sauce or salt and pepper but overall it was a solid burger. My friend's fish-n-chips were barely edible. The fried outside was soggy and the fish inside wasn't flaky or even fresh. Plus with the soggy fries -- it was a bad combination. Aesthetically it was great. This hidden gem down on the Berkeley waterfront in located inside a Doubletree by Hilton property. The restaurant faces the bay with great views. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. Our server was very attentive and friendly. They have a great cocktail menu with brunch. We spilt the green curry mussels and eggs Benedict. The mussels were perfect and tasty. The sourdough was lightly grilled and was perfect for dipping. The eggs Benedict was tasty, good hollandaise sauce. The only disappointment was the potatoes were dry and unseasoned. We stayed at the hotel for Berkeley graduation for a week so we ate at the Berkeley Boathouse 4 times twice for dinner and twice for breakfast. The dinners were delicious and the service was great. The breakfast on the weekend was perfect but the breakfast on the Monday morning was hectic it was much busier than the weekend and the server was good but she was the only server for a lot of tables so there was no way she could be very attentive the breakfast on Monday was good but no where near as good as it was on the weekend and the poor server was too busy to keep up .. read more

A friend told us to check this place out. Was a little skeptical since it's inside Doubletree Hilton and hotel dining isn't always great but decided to try it. Fiancé and I got the Cobb Salad, Seared Scallops, Salami & Prosciutto Flatbread and Sweet Corn Soup. The melt-in-your-mouth scallops were quite delicious. I love corn so was a fan of the creamy, sweet soup too. We were pretty full already but ended our meal with the Creme Brûlée Trio (lemon was my fav). Tender, medium well, and in a red wine reduction sauce that was sweet and savory! Sides: Truffle mashed potatoes and green beans. I had 4 green beans, wish they had given more veggies. It was clear the steak was the star of the entree. Hostess and wait staff were polite, engaging, and attentive. They kept our water and coffee topped off and anticipated our every need. They have plexiglass that blocked out some of the wind for the day, which was great! The mimosa flight was a great option! It came with a raspberry, strawberry, and passion fruit Mimosas! So this Thanksgiving, we decided to have our Thanksgiving dinner at the Berkeley Boathouse. It was our first time so we didn't know that the restaurant is inside the Double Tree hotel. You can self park and the restaurant validates - nice! We sat outdoors which I was a bit concerned about since it's on the marina but they have ample number of heaters going. We aren't big on turkey so we decided to go with their dinner menu. We had their Wagyu Flat Iron Steak and Seafood Curry. Their wagyu steak was so tender. Flavorful with a bit of a kick. It came with roasted artichokes and golden potatoes. My husband enjoyed the seafood curry. Generous number of mussels. For cocktails we ordered the Rising Sun, it had a refreshing taste to it. Our party of two arrived at 6pm on Monday night for Berkeley Restaurant Week and was seated right away. We had a reservation with OpenTable at 6:30pm which we did not need. Because it was windy that day, we chose to sit inside and were seated by a large window with a view of the water and San Francisco. There were heaters and a fire pit outside. Their $40 4-course meal was very accommodating to vegetarians. We each ordered different items so that we could try more dishes. Starter: 1. Grilled broccolini w/red pepper pesto, pickled onion, tzatziki crema, parsnip threads ($14 on regular menu, 4/5) - This had a great flavor profile although the dish was unexpectedly on the cooler side. 2. Seared ahi w/grilled pineapple salsa, avocado, ancho relish (not seen on regular menu, 3/5) - The flavors of this dish did not seem to mesh as well together as with the previous dish. It was also strangely room-temperature. Soup/Salad: 1. Boathouse clam chowder w/grilled sourdough ($10 as soup of the day on regular menu, 3/5) - This is not disclosed on the menu, but it comes with a crumbled bacon topping (I don't eat pork). Luckily, the server asked if it was okay, so we said no. Unfortunately, the soup arrived at our table with bacon so we sent it back. The soup itself was decent with a good amount of clams. 2. Little gem vol-au-vent w/grilled corn, shaved manchego, pickled fresno, Tejano dressing ($12 on regular menu, 4/5) - This was a fresh salad with good flavors. Entrée: 1. Grilled mahi-mahi tacos w/avocado crema, pico de gallo, cotija cheese (not available on regular menu, 4/5) - The toppings overpowered the fish, but overall, good flavor combo. 2 corn tortilla tacos. 2. Mushroom bolognese with fresh pappardelle and grilled bread (not available on regular menu, 4/5) - Generous serving of soft noodles with a salty mushroom sauce. Dessert: 1. Chocolate Cake ($10 on regular menu, 5/5) - moist and rich 2. Turtle Cheesecake ($10 on regular menu, 4/5) - super heavy, a bit too sweet 3. Almare gelato flight - we did not order this. For drinks, I got the Westcoast Cooler (Westward Whiskey, Mandarin Napoleon, Lemon Juice, Alchemist Peach, Fresh Basil) which I thought was very mediocre (2/5) especially for $18. My partner got the Westward Whiskey Flight ($22, 4/5) which included a half ounce each of the Westward Single Malt, Westward Stout Cask, and Westward Pinot Noir Cask. Our favorite of the 3 was the Westward Stout Cask. Overall, nice ambiance, excellent service (our server Mely was amazing!), and decent food and drinks. read more

Overall I would give it a 3.5 stars. So tonight I spent time with my brothers and sis to catch up on life. We haven't been to this location in like 4 years. It's located at the back part of the Double Tree Hotel in the Berkeley Marina. First change we noticed was the parking, they charge to self-park or do valet. Wow!! Like $25 or $30. No thanks. I ended up parking across the street for free. The decor has totally changed. They seem to make it look brighter and bigger. I definitely liked the new vibe. Our waitress recommended a few things. She was very nice and didn't mind my party's humor. As a collective group our main dishes was the scallops, salmon and bison. Personally the scallops was the best tasting item out of the three. We also ordered like 3 plates of Korean wings which was crispy and tasted really well. And the bread for the spinach dip was really good combo. the best part of the restaurant was Wanna our waitress. the worst part was everything else. the food was the absolute worst I've ever experienced. to say it was bland is an understatement. the peach cobbler was severely undercooked. the scallops were rubbery. the pasta was oily, and the fish had no flavor or seasoning. not even a pinch of salt. a consultant working there tried to accommodate us best he could but it's unfortunate that corporate ties hands and won't do what's necessary for improvement. stay far far away from this place! This facility is breathtakingly beautiful. It doesn't get better than the marina view with floor to ceiling sparkling windows. It's a very elegant, modern vibe. The food is contemporary, creative, and simply...delicious! The banquet manager, Rocelita walks around greeting guests and makes sure everyone's meals are good and is very welcoming. She adds a personal touch and elevates the overall dining experience. Few restaurants can balance good food with equally good service. This restaurant hits all the marks. Stayed at the Hilton and wanted to watch the Kings game. Sat at the bar and Luis was the bartender. No smile, no friendly "hello" and was pushy and impatient. I had asked a question and he had the nerve to tell my husband, when he asked a similar question, I already told that to your wife. Cantankerous old man that maybe needs to hang it up? He and another bartender were arguing in front of us as were were trying to watch the game. The bartender was telling Luis that it would be nice if he could help him out once in awhile since he helps him. Luis did not appear to be having a bad day....he was definitely friendly with the people he knew. Actually smiled at them and had a personality. Just had dinner here last night for my mom's birthday and it was yum! I initially had trouble reaching the restaurant via phone to make a reservation for a party of 10. The open table says I need to call to make a reservation for a party that large. I called a few times but there was no answer. I eventually emailed them and got back to me pretty quickly once they saw my email. They were able to fit our party in and called me to confirm the reservation. The restaurant is in the double tree Hilton hotel and it's pretty nice. It was my mom's birthday dinner and I wanted something different with a nice ambiance and good food. The restaurant definitely delivered - live music, nice sunset, a super attentive server. We ordered garlic fries, artichoke, brussel sprouts, calamari to share. Very delicious - we haven't indulged like this in a while. Then we ordered main food: mahi mahi, cioppino, tuna tartare, various salads, kids had Mac n cheese with grilled chicken, and fresh fruit. I had the beet salad with a side of salmon which was my way of trying to be "healthy" after overindulging in the appetizers. Of course by the time the main food dishes arrived most of us managed to get full, But we didn't let that stop us from ordering dessert! We had creme brulee, chocolate cake, and cheese cake. It's the next morning and I'm still full thinking about it. After dinner we walked to the water front of the hotel and sat on the chairs and hung out a bit before heading home. Hard to find from Google maps because it's on the backside of the Doubletree hotel. The view and atmosphere are terrific, inside and outside. The fish and chips were terrific. The hostess was annoying, with a weird attitude and despite the outdoor section being completely empty, she insisted on putting me in the windiest spot. Luckily, once the waitress appeared, I was allowed to move to a better table. The outdoor area is full of heaters and surrounded by a windscreen so most of the tables are great, even with high wind. The waitress was pretty good, but she didn't understand I was in a zoom meeting on my laptop and kept trying to talk to me! The busboys were terrific however, went out of their way, to help me with a couple of questions & needs, including refilling my beer! read more
