Came here for the second time visiting from Orange County. I had a great experience last time I was in San Diego so I decided to take come back. I started off with the fried calamari, they were breaded in a light tempura batter and were cooked perfectly, they weren't chewy at all. I loved the accompanying sweet chili sauce. I also had the beef crostini, the goat cheese and arugula combination was divine! I then had the Shrimp & a grits that sous chef Ruben recommended. They were amazing! The grits were cheesy and rich and the addition of chorizo gave it a wonderful texture balance. I also had a beer called the Cali Cream, which was a mixture of two beers I believe. It tasted like a dark beer mixed with peanut butter... Sounds weird right? But it was so good! The creme brûlée was pretty good, I liked the addition of raspberries. Never been treated so horribly !!! From the moment we sat down our male server started to complain to other staff members and his bartenders about our large group of 15 . My sister turned 21 today and we had her group of friends out we just spent $300 at another bar and planned on spending more money here and because have been bar hopping , it was a 21 year old party he treated us like crap . He made the discussion to cancel our order, half of us were still there waiting for our drinks . I was the one going to pay , which I am well over 21 and Run a well known establishment and know customer server and would be embarrassed to have this gentleman representing my brand . He had no idea who we were and should never judge a book by a cover , we tip very well and spend lots of money . Made my younger sister which was the bday girl embarrassed to take her friend in there after the horrible way he treated our group . If you want great customer service and just want a drink - go in to this place but if you want polite and experienced and happy vibes - TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE - first time and Last !! read more

Came here last weekend to celebrate my friend's birthday and was saddened to experience mixed feelings about this place. I will cut them some slack as it has only been opened for a few months, but management and the security staff really need to change their attitudes. We were waiting for our table after sitting on the sidelines with some drinks we ordered. When the table was ready, some of my party was yelled at for sitting down too early. I mean come on, what is the point of being so rude? We all ordered more than one cocktail/beer and several entrees. My boyfriend and I ordered the lobster BLT sandwich and mac 'n cheez-its. Our mac 'n cheeze-its and lobster BLT was spilled all over our table because the busboy got accidentally nudged. He was rude about spilling the food and we didn't see our food until most of our party was almost done with their meals. We attempted to cancel our mac 'n cheese but was told it was already being made and that it would come out shortly. It came out 20 minutes later. When we asked for a to go box, it did not come for another 20 minutes. We were seated at the table for about 1.5-2 hours, which is too long if you ask me. Our server was sweet and felt bad for the bad service and tried to get us either a comped entree, but we ended up with a free round of drinks which the owner or manager, who seemed unwilling, gave us. It was unfortunate that we did not experience great service at this place but the food was good, especially the two things we ordered. I'll give them some time to get the hang of running a busy establishment, work out the kinks and hopefully improve their customer service prior to returning. read more

I actually signed up for Yelp! for the sole purpose of reviewing The Bier Garden. I've been in the restaurant world for almost 10 years now and have never wanted to give a place bad reviews, because I know restaurants/the staff are typically trying their best; off-nights happen. However, the service we had here made it very apparent that off-nights may just be every night. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this place. My husband and I were walking by, and decided to stop in for dinner because it looked like a fun, neat place. The decor is great, and I love the concept. My husband is a big beer fan (who isn't in San Diego!) and they do have a solid beer menu. There were four people at the door (?) standing around to greet us (no hosts, just people working there standing by), and we were told to seat ourselves wherever. The server came by after a few minutes and grabbed our drink and food orders; she did not write anything down, which - as a server for many years - this does not impress me at all. People are human and make mistakes, so why not just write the order down to ensure you don't forget anything? Because - surprise - she forgot our appetizer. We waited about 20 minutes for our appetizer when our entrees showed up. I asked the expo to check on where our appetizer was, and she never came back. We didn't have any silverware, so after 5 minutes of waiting, I got up to ask someone for a fork so I could at least eat my meal. More than halfway through our dinner, our server came by (the first time she had been by since taking our order 25 minutes before), and told us that the kitchen had "lost" our appetizer. Lost? No, that's not how it works. Food does not disappear. Either someone had accidentally taken our order to their table (which happens) or she had forgotten to order it. Regardless, she should have realized it was not at our table in the beginning, and asked the cooks to rush it so it could be brought out to us as an appetizer, not informed us at the end of our meal that our appetizer was lost. Food-wise, my husband liked his fish tacos, and my chicken salad was pretty greasy. I probably shouldn't have expected much from a salad at a bar-emphasized place, but they did have a pretty good looking salad list, so I wanted to give it a shot. When we realized our server was rarely coming by, I asked for the check. And then I timed it, because at that point, why not? It took our server 19 minutes to bring the check back. I understand that other tables get sat, drinks have to be passed out, other people are there besides me and our server could be busy. However, what I don't understand is the inability to multi-task. Print out our check, grab beers for another table that just ordered them, and drop off our check on your way back from dropping off the beers. You just have to learn how to think that way when you're a server. Instead, our server walked by us no less than five times and didn't glance at us. The fifth time, she asked if I wanted more water, and I said, "No thank you, just the check." When the check came, I was charged $4.00 more for my salad than was on the menu. I had asked for all chicken on my salad instead of a pork/chicken combination, and how the computer (or server) entered that in was a $4.00 upcharge. I get that this happens, but it was just so annoying at this point; these things should be reviewed by the server before handing out the bill. So after that was fixed, we finally pay, and the manager comes up to "see how everything was." I wasn't rude, just kind of disappointed in the overall experience, and I told him the meal was okay, that our appetizer had been forgotten, and that things had seemed a little slow. I told him this out of hopes that, in him wanting to make his restaurant successful, he'd appreciate the feedback (I know my manager comes by every table that comes in, and truly wants to hear how their meal was). The manager stared blankly, and said, "Oh...well I just wanted to see how it was. Wish I had known that earlier. Hope to see you back." We just smiled, thanked him, and left. If that's how this place is handling business, then okay. The whole dinner turned out to be an almost two hour experience, which is ridiculous for a casual meal. I spent more time waiting than eating. We can get fish tacos and a salad at many places in San Diego. We can get craft beer at a LOT of places in San Diego. And I can also make food at my house. But what we came for was to check out a cool, new place, and to see if we wanted to make it a regular spot to come with friends or out of towners and spread the word. Unfortunately, the only word I will be spreading is that this place really disappointed me. I hope they can learn from the negative reviews, reevaluate the staff, and get some training in! It's too beautiful of a spot and location to let this fail. read more

Brought my husband and kids here on a Sunday afternoon. The food was excellent, the service was great and the place was really nice. They were very accomodating with the kids and my picky lilttle ones even ate all their food. My husband and I ordered fish tacos and a bunch of small plates to share - super delicious! My wife and I stopped in for a beer and lunch today, Nov. 9, and was surprised the beer was $8.00, a bit pricey. I ordered fish and chips but when it came it was not hot almost cold. I don't know what Tara, the waitress was doing but there were only 5 other patrons there so no excuse for cold food to be served. We ordered drinks and got them pretty quickly, but then it took forever for them to take our order. Then even longer for our food to come (nearly an hour after we were originally seated. We watched the people who arrived after we did finish their food. They delivered half of our food to the wrong table, as we watched hungrily , they ate the fries and picked up and inspected the food that was meant for our food. When the server realized 10 minutes later that they had delivered the food to the wrong table, he picked it up and asked if it was ok if he could drop it off at our table because they hadn't touched it. Ummm, no thank you! We mentioned the fact the server tried to give us food that had been delivered to another table to the manager, and she said they were trained to this because they are green and waste conscious, and that in fact the server is eating one of our plates now so it doesn't go to waste. We finally got our two burgers another 15 minutes after that. I was really shocked they thought it was ok to give us cold food that had been picked over by the table next to us, and that was just fine with the manager. She comped our table 1 order of French fries, so we could eat something while our friends ate. Hmmm... read more

We stopped in here for a late dinner on one of our nightly family walks (an 8 month old and 3 year old in tow) and we were a little skeptical it being a bar atmosphere but took a chance as the front hostess was very friendly. We were seated immediately even though the place was busy and a waitress took our order shortly after that. While we waited for our meal, the front hostess scoured her box of crayons for different colors for our little toddler artist and made sure she was taken care of. Our food came out quick and was HOT!! Which is such a thing to me, hate warm food so right away I was happy! We ordered a salad, a sandwich and a burger for our daughter and everything tasted fresh, just made, and crisp! The portions were also generous and reasonably priced. Our waitress (sorry forgot her name) was awesome and took great care of us and was sweet. The noise level of the place actually worked out perfect and the lights and tvs entertained our daughters the entire meal :) Although we don't make a late dinner at a bar a regular thing with little ones, this was actually a super, pleasant experience and we will be back! thank you for the super kind staff and delicious food! read more

wonderful location, and they did an awesome job with the interior. stopped by yesterday while out walking for a drink, and got a little bite to eat. it IS pricey, but the food was excellent and the drinks cold. good selection in the drink department, too. my husband got the fish and chips, and he said it was the best he's had. i tried his fries, they were delicious! tastes like the add a little cinnamon and/or nutmeg to the seasoning. i got the "smalls" plate of diver scallops, with cilantro pesto and kelp noodles. i could have eaten three more of those plates, delicious! i ate his slaw, which was a little bland, but used the rest of the dressing on my plate to make it more savory. it's a nice treat on a beautiful day walking along the 101, and worth the dough if you're up for it. read more

Went here for dinner last night with my mom and husband and it never ceases to amaze me how the staff can either make or break a dining experience. The food was good, ambience was awesome and yet our waitress (bartender) couldn't have been worse. Epic fail on every level. My bf, our dog, and a group of 7 of our friends (4 whom had never been to Bier Garden) were celebrating a few college graduations and requested to sit on the patio. We were basically told by a short, stocky, partially balding security guard who's name was "Eddie" that we were out of luck because there were too many of us. After splitting our party up because we were unaccommodated, the security guard rudely came to our table and carded my friends and i AFTER our waitress had taken our drink orders.We assumed he was the manager and thought nothing of it. When a table next to one of ours opened up, i went inside and asked if the security guard was the manager so we could get the table bused. He blatantly told me "yes, he was the manager" and as we were walking outside presumed to tell me he was also security, a busser, and a host.....ok? (He didn't lift a finger to help bus our table so we ended up doing most of it ourselves). After we had gotten our drinks, and were socializing, the security guy came up to our table two more times to tell us we needed to move our chairs because we were "in the way."For anyone who has ever been there, you know that the patio is a squeeze at the best of times, but especially during a busy Saturday brunch so we were doing the best we could at "staying out the way." At that point we were all annoyed so two people in our group went to sit at the bar. Low and behold they hear the security guard audibly and extremely unprofessionally griping and talking very rudely about our table in the middle of the restaurant. WE WERE DONE! We asked to speak to the manager and as we were explaining to her how the security guard had treated us since we had walked in, he walked up behind her, and had the nerve to LAUGH at us!!! We all work in the industry and were outraged at how this guy was acting and making the manager look like a fool. None of us will ever return to Bier Garden again, especially as long as that guy is working. It's such a shame that one disgruntled employee can ruin such a great restaurant in a prime location. I would never treat customers the way we were treated and if Bier Garden wants to keep a good reputation, they should remove people like "Eddie" who obviously should not be working in such a customer service based industry. On a lighter note, a young man who bussed our tables, gave my dog water, and checked up on us multiple times to make sure we were OK should be applauded for great work and great customer service. He was one of the few reasons why we didn't get up and leave to begin with, and he portrays an excellent example of an all star employee! read more

A so so place overall. The beer range is pretty good, but the beer range is pretty good at most San Diego area eateries. The food is also mostly sound. My beef here was as follows. We, a party of four, came here for dinner. We had our mains and a few drinks and were having a good time. We were planning to have some dessert, too, but when we flagged down our server he told us the kitchen had closed so we couldn't get any. Really? Everyone I was dining with has worked in the service industry and we all thought this was shabby practice. (We would have expected a heads-up from the waiter in case we wanted anything else.) So here I am, telling it real to Yelp. Aside from the gripe, the meal was OK. As a silver lining, we went down the street to a place called 3rd Corner and had a fantastic dessert paired with some top notch beer and wine - probably a much better dessert than we would have gotten at Biergarden. If I go back to Encinitas I will go to dinner at the Encinitas Ale House and give Biergarden a pass. It's not a bad place overall but you've got better options literally minutes away (and that's walking, mind you). read more

I went in to meet a friend and we were so surprised by the tastiness! We both ordered a cocktail, which was delish, and then I ordered the short rib sandwich with cilantro pesto. The best part besides the flavor...it came with waffle fries! I was impressed with the flavor of both the sandwich and cocktail and we agreed it was yelp review worthy. I've been to Bier Garden now a few times and I have to say it's become my go-to hangout as a Cardiff/Encinitas local. The open atmosphere and patio make it a great spot on a warm night. Awesome local beer selection. Growing menu including fantastic ceviche (of which I'm very picky). And the staff I've come in contact with couldn't be friendlier. In fact my server Jonah from a previous visit even stopped by our table to say hi. It's a great, comfortable environment and I plan to spend many more fun nights here! read more

We came in on a Monday afternoon, our server (I think his name was Manny) didn't pay attention to us at all and the food was less than. This is just a review for the drinks and service. We have tried this place twice, and will not be going back. It seems like a nice ambiance for a drink before or after dinner in Encinitas but the service has been horrible each time and the cocktails subpar. The most recent time we went we waited about 15 minutes to be greeted by our server, quite a while for our drinks, and sat with empty cups waiting for our check for another 15 minutes after we had requested it. Both times it has seemed like they have a lot of people working here but no one really knows which tables are their responsibility, and having worked in the industry myself, there is no excuse for this. This place could have been great and we are quite disappointed because they do have a nice beer selection, but nowadays that is not hard to find in this city! read more

Can't believe the poor management running this place. We had tried this place for the first time and ordered a few beers and the crostini with beef. We already had dinner before we came and weren't that hungry. Our beef had so much gristle that we had to put it back on the plate. When we informed the manager, he would not tell us that he would take it off the bill. He just said he would "take off a little" for the inconvenience. We weren't happy with this answer since we barely ate any of the appetizer. His excuse was "Well, you ate most of it already.". We told him to look at the regurgitated food we put back on the plate. Guess he never observed it. We practically had to beg to get it taken off of our bill. This guy needs to go back to management school and learn how respectable restaurant establishments keep their customers. I will never go back! A cute and bubbly hostess (dark red short hair) answered all of our questions and was so friendly and convincing that we decided to check the place out. The Bier Garden is one happening place!!! It is the place to get a good draft of a locally crafted beer and get a good burger while you're at it! It is remarkable that it has only been open since April, and the crew has rolled out an increasingly interesting menu over those short weeks. I have to say that the short rib nachos is my favorite! The salad and chips really were fresh and crunchy, and the short ribs were sooo tender! I bit into a bit of the jalapeno pepper salsa, and while the back of my mouth was trying to recover, the cool of the salad worked my taste buds back to consciousness...one of the best appetizers I have had in a long time. The wait staff is friendly, and the bartenders seem on it when talking about the brews. I like the fact that a local pub is serving locally crafted beers--helps the economy all the way around. I live in Encinitas and love this place. It's truly a staple to the community. Every time I've come I've had a wonderful experience. Excellent service, excellent food and of course, beer! Was here on a busy Saturday, quickly seated, orders taken, food served extremely fast and the best spicy margarita in town! (I know because I tried 2 other local spots and theirs weren't any good). Bier Garden is one of my favorite places in Encinitas. They have really good food and lots of choices that aren't just bar food. They also have decent wine and their bartenders know how to make drinks. We were waiting for a table so we ordered drinks at the bar. The person who served us, Adam, was not very friendly. He's waited on me before so maybe he was having a bad day. My complaint is that he was chewing gum, not just chewing but chomping. If he was an employee of mine I would ask him to spit it out for sure. I think gum chewing should be on your personal time. It is not professional or appropriate in a business setting. We were seated outside at a perfect table and our server was fantastic. Unfortunately I've forgotten her name. We shared a beet salad and fish and chips. Like I said, the food, drinks and atmosphere at Bier Garden are great. My only complaint was the about the person serving our drinks while chewing gum. We'll definitely be back but hope not to have the same issue. read more
