I was in the Claremont area yesterday and decided to find a place to have a massage. I used Yelp and found Bird Rock Massage studio. They were able to accommodate me on the spot. My 1st time here, it was big, beautifully decorated, smelled great and very clean. Whitney was my masseuse who had magic fingers. I asked for deep / hard pressure and she delivered without being painful. She worked out some tension and knots but i definitely needed more than 60 minutes. I live in Bird Rock (La Jolla) and decided to try this location in Clairemont. My husband and I booked massages at the same time and both requested deep tissue. My therapist said she does Gua Sha with tools instead of traditional deep tissue. I was really looking forward to hands-on deep tissue work, but her passion for the technique came through, so I agreed to try it. It felt okay at the time, but five days later my neck is still very sore. I went in with no pain and left with significant lingering soreness. In hindsight, I think there should have been a clearer conversation about whether I wanted to switch techniques or stick with deep tissue as originally requested. but that can be awkward. also, there's a lot of talking through the Massage which again was all passion, but I really did come to relax. I told her I had tear. She wanted to massage around the tear, which then inflamed it. I probably should've stuck to my guns and just said don't do the area, but she said she worked with Olympians. My husband also asked for deep tissue, and his massage ended up being much softer than expected, even after mentioning it during the session. That said, both therapists were very kind and professional. I just think clearer communication around pressure and technique expectations would make a big difference. read more

Shana is the best masseuse I've ever had in my life... and I get massages several times a month. Truly the best; she was born for this. I came in on my 40th birthday very frazzled bc there was an event happening and no parking. By the time I left I was the happiest person on the planet. I have recently started going to the Clairemont location because I've found it much easier to get to, find parking, etc. I have been getting semi-regular or occasional massages for over 30 years and have had some wonderful therapists. But, Diana - who is primarily at the Clairemont location - is hands-down THE BEST therapist I have ever had!!! This is the best massage studio I've ever been to in San Diego, especially because they actually communicate and tailor the massage to you.
