Love love this place! The coffee is just so good. I was once a Starbucks girlie but I've changed my preferences since. Tried all the coffee places within my vicinity and this is by far the best in Pasadena. The salted caramel latte is a must try and if you show up early enough, try the almond croissant or the chorizo pastry. Super delicious and filling. I've taken all my friends here, even those who've visited from other countries. I always get messages from my friends saying they miss the coffee. A friend and I came by for a cup of coffee on a weekday morning. The cafe has a good amount of indoor seating as well as some outdoor benches and stools, most of it was filled by 10am. If you can grab a seat inside there is a cool mural with a roaring 20's aesthetic and a lot of plants. I ordered an Americano. You can choose whether to have 5oz or 12oz of water added to your double shot depending on how strong you like your cup. I opted for the 5oz cup. The espresso blend was bright, but it wasn't particularly flavorful. For standard LA cafe prices it wasn't the quality I hoped for, but it wasn't bad coffee. Service was fast, but not so friendly. I've been to the three other the boy and the bear location and the aesthetics are always really nice: bohemian surfer California vibes. The customer service at this location was moderate. I recently visited this café and ordered an oat latte, but unfortunately, it was quite disappointing. The roast was weak, and the oat milk made the drink taste watery. I also tried a cream cheese danish, which was even worse. The pastry was lumpy, greasy, and the croissant dough felt doughy no flavor at all. To top it off, the place had a snobbish atmosphere, and the prices were unreasonably high for the quality of food and drinks. I definitely won't be coming back. I've been a lil patient in regards to this because I understand as a new business it can be stressful and takes a lil time to get in the groove. I'm a huge fan of superior coffee and just here alone in Pasadena we have many options. My experience at this location is that you come in and even if they are not busy they don't greet you, they let me stand at the counter for a few minutes before they even decide to ask if I need help. #79 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. To be perfectly honest, I wanted to like The Boy and The Bear but I just couldn't. Though the interior design is beautiful with all the lush green foliage and neutral tones, the downside to having all those plants inside is that there were too many gnats flying around for me to sit and enjoy my drink comfortably. I was originally planning to stick around and work, but with all the gnats circling me I ended up dipping as soon as I finished my matcha latte. Then there were the issues I had with my actual order. First, they charged me extra for ordering less ice, which makes zero sense because it's not like they made up for the difference in ice with more drink. Aka the cup wasn't filled to the top after reducing the ice level, which is perfectly fine. What wasn't typical though was how they charged me extra for making the same exact drink with the same exact ingredient measurements minus the extra ice. And though it was an inexpensive charge, I've never encountered this before at other coffeeshops, that's how abnormal it was. Secondly, the matcha wasn't mixed well so the drink was pretty grainy - unexpected given the price. There are about 7 tables up for grabs and it doesn't seem too busy on a weekday. Colombian is my favorite type of coffee roast so I was naturally drawn to this place. The environment was just a plus. They have two different styles of Colombian coffee. Modern and classic. Class is is what I'm usually used to but if you like the fruity light coffees go for the modern. There was people enjoying their coffee and few people in line to order. They sell coffee beans and merchandise. Then I seen the pastries displayed case of cinnamon rolls, cookies, chocolate croissants, almond croissants, and bars. I ordered ice mocha drink w/chocolate croissant. The ice mocha has good expresso beans taste. The croissant was buttery and lots of layers inside. The prices are average compared to other coffee places. read more

This is our second time at this coffee shop. The interior is very modern and aesthetically pleasing with a lot of pretty plants. I got a vanilla latte today and it was smooth. Not too sweet and not too bitter, which is what I like. Cute latte art too! I do wish they had coffee cup sleeves though to help with condensation or prevent hands from burning. Our first time here was through an online order and a quick pick up. After the order went through, it was not until they sent us a message that they did not have all the items to make the drink we wanted at the time. We came on a Sunday morning at 940am, we ordered a Nordic cold brew and oat milk latte and the oat milk latte was ready after 15 minutes. We noticed they were forgetting multiple customer's orders and didn't have an effective system going. Maybe they were understaffed but we sensed that other customers besides us were getting impatient. My gf said her oat milk latte was good. TROPICAL RAINFOREST BY WAY OF GREEN STREET I love to take long walks. Especially when I'm in Pasadena. The hidden streets that lead to bustling restaurants, or a quiet street hiding a cute little bookshop or antique store. The architecture that has a hidden story,etc. So I had heard of The Boy and The Bear through word of mouth and I took it as an excuse to walk on Green Street on a Sunday Morning with streets deserted and cars casually passing by. I found the sign very welcoming as a little rain drizzle started to descend on the streets. I step in and am transported to some part of the Amazon that must have a wormhole to Pasadena. I'm kidding of course but the ambiance definitely gave me some rainforest vibes. The architecture, the decorative tiles and murals, and the plants gave it a vibe and a slight pain wishing I lived around here because I would be a regular. While there was no seating which is understandable, the baristas were most helpful and welcoming when I made my order. I ordered the cappuccino and croissant as I always do when trying out new coffee shops and the coffee did not disappoint. Very strong and robust. The croissant was also perfect and flaky. I was even able to go outside where there were tables and benches and enjoyed my coffee and ambiance. Would I come back? Most Definitely. If you find yourself wandering the side streets of Pasadena, take Green and you just might find a cute little coffee shop ready to transport you to the Amazon and fulfill your java dreams. read more

Loved this coffee shop! It's on a corner & parking is a bit hard when it's crowded. When we walked in, we were surprised by how full of plants & aesthetically pleasing it was inside. I absolutely love plants so We looked at their digital menu & decided to get a cold brew latte and me, not liking coffee, got the hot chocolate. The girl that took our order was very sweet and super pretty (Asian girl with classes and blonde-ish hair) & was super helpful to help us decide what we wanted! We waited off to the side until our drinks were called out. The hot chocolate was delectably smooth and the chocolate wasn't too bitter at all. They also added salted caramel and it made the drink sweet but not sickenly so. I absolutely LOVED the hot chocolate and would definitely get it again. My boyfriend also loved his cold brew. He said that the flavor was deep, rich, and wasn't bitter, and brewed to perfection. He just wished that they didn't put so much ice inside (it took up over half of the cup) & that they put a little less milk, but he knows to request it next time! The only gripe that I have about this place are the number flies that hang out in the middle of the coffee shop due to all the plants. Definitely will be back. Am a Pasadena Local and was more than excited to come home from our work trip to the opening of Boy and the Bear! We've been driving by just so excited to go! The aesthetics are absolutely on point. Coffee was ABSOLUTELY amazing- compared to lattes I've been used to which are normally just tastes like purely all milk. Coffee is absolutely delicious and crisp. The vanilla syrup I asked for was amazing and not to sweet. Portions are also generous- as I've stopped going to some local coffee shops since they overcharge for a small small tiny coffee that seems like a costco sized sample. I rarely am impressed by coffee these days since I've been so blessed to be well traveled and tasted amazing international coffee. But we were not disappointed by Boy and the Bear! My NEW favorite spot! Parking was not a hassle in my opinion. Street parking is pretty ample on green street in Pasadena if one is patient and just willing to walk a little bit.
