I've been to the three other the boy and the bear location and the aesthetics are always really nice: bohemian surfer California vibes. The customer service at this location was moderate. They got my order right but completely lacked enthusiasm. I ordered my usual hot americano with one raw sugar and oat milk. I have no complains about the drink . With that aside, I think it's a nice location to read a book or do work as there's plenty of indoor seating and it's fairly quiet. I prefer visiting on a Sunday since there's more parking and it's unlimited. read more

I've been a lil patient in regards to this because I understand as a new business it can be stressful and takes a lil time to get in the groove. I wanted to like this cafe. I visited twice. The coffee is good. The staff is not very good. Their system to alert you that your order is ready, needs improvement. The outside seating is awkward and not comfortable. It isn't explicit where to place items once done eating and drinking. #79 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. To be perfectly honest, I wanted to like The Boy and The Bear but I just couldn't. Though the interior design is beautiful with all the lush green foliage and neutral tones, the downside to having all those plants inside is that there were too many gnats flying around for me to sit and enjoy my drink comfortably. I was originally planning to stick around and work, but with all the gnats circling me I ended up dipping as soon as I finished my matcha latte. Then there were the issues I had with my actual order. First, they charged me extra for ordering less ice, which makes zero sense because it's not like they made up for the difference in ice with more drink. Aka the cup wasn't filled to the top after reducing the ice level, which is perfectly fine. What wasn't typical though was how they charged me extra for making the same exact drink with the same exact ingredient measurements minus the extra ice. And though it was an inexpensive charge, I've never encountered this before at other coffeeshops, that's how abnormal it was. Secondly, the matcha wasn't mixed well so the drink was pretty grainy - unexpected given the price. Overall, there was really nothing noteworthy about my experience here to make me consider returning. ********************* My Ratings: 1 Star: Terrible; just thinking about it makes me angry. 2 Stars: Wasn't a fan so Not likely to return. 3 Stars: Meh. This is our second time at this coffee shop. The interior is very modern and aesthetically pleasing with a lot of pretty plants. I got a vanilla latte today and it was smooth. Not too sweet and not too bitter, which is what I like. Cute latte art too! I do wish they had coffee cup sleeves though to help with condensation or prevent hands from burning. Our first time here was through an online order and a quick pick up. After the order went through, it was not until they sent us a message that they did not have all the items to make the drink we wanted at the time. The boy and the bear in Pasadena just opened on March 9th! They are still in their soft opening phase and working out some kinks! The line wasn't too long but it did take a while to get our drinks. I will definitely be back to give them another try. It's a nice place to do some work or read since they have plenty of seating. And it's califa oat milk too. Their contribution to the world of coffee is bringing Colombian beans to our taste buds. Is it better than coffees from other countries? I definitely get the appeal of this place. It's quiet, calm, and chic. This would make a nice work place in the day time. There are about 7 tables up for grabs and it doesn't seem too busy on a weekday. Colombian is my favorite type of coffee roast so I was naturally drawn to this place. The environment was just a plus. They have two different styles of Colombian coffee. Modern and classic. Class is is what I'm usually used to but if you like the fruity light coffees go for the modern. I got a vanilla latte with oat milk and it was smooth and not overly sweet. Next time I will go with a regular espresso or cortado. I wanted to play it safe because I've never been here before. There was people enjoying their coffee and few people in line to order. They sell coffee beans and merchandise. Then I seen the pastries displayed case of cinnamon rolls, cookies, chocolate croissants, almond croissants, and bars. I ordered ice mocha drink w/chocolate croissant. The ice mocha has good expresso beans taste. The croissant was buttery and lots of layers inside. The prices are average compared to other coffee places. read more

TROPICAL RAINFOREST BY WAY OF GREEN STREET I love to take long walks. Especially when I'm in Pasadena. The hidden streets that lead to bustling restaurants, or a quiet street hiding a cute little bookshop or antique store. The architecture that has a hidden story,etc. So I had heard of The Boy and The Bear through word of mouth and I took it as an excuse to walk on Green Street on a Sunday Morning with streets deserted and cars casually passing by. I found the sign very welcoming as a little rain drizzle started to descend on the streets. I step in and am transported to some part of the Amazon that must have a wormhole to Pasadena. I'm kidding of course but the ambiance definitely gave me some rainforest vibes. The architecture, the decorative tiles and murals, and the plants gave it a vibe and a slight pain wishing I lived around here because I would be a regular. While there was no seating which is understandable, the baristas were most helpful and welcoming when I made my order. I ordered the cappuccino and croissant as I always do when trying out new coffee shops and the coffee did not disappoint. Very strong and robust. The croissant was also perfect and flaky. I was even able to go outside where there were tables and benches and enjoyed my coffee and ambiance. Would I come back? Most Definitely. If you find yourself wandering the side streets of Pasadena, take Green and you just might find a cute little coffee shop ready to transport you to the Amazon and fulfill your java dreams. read more

Came here because I thought the name was super cute. They only have 2 latte flavors to choose from , vanilla and salted caramel, so I was a bit skeptical but once I tried it it was so good!! The salted caramel latte is amazing. Very smooth and rich latte. I can forgive them for only having two flavors. Whatever technique they use is really good to make their drinks. This is my second time trying this place and first time for my friend. I went in on Monday 12:00 and ordered a Cortado and an iced vanilla latte. The Cortado was good.enough. The vanilla latte was far too milky. I ended up ordering another espresso shot to add to it. The service is terrible.The person at the counter was not helpful and had a passive aggressive vibe. I was reminded why this was only my second time coming to this place as I felt the same energy from someone else the last time I was there. We came on a Sunday morning at 940am, we ordered a Nordic cold brew and oat milk latte and the oat milk latte was ready after 15 minutes. Maybe they were understaffed but we sensed that other customers besides us were getting impatient. My gf said her oat milk latte was good. Loved this coffee shop! It's on a corner & parking is a bit hard when it's crowded. When we walked in, we were surprised by how full of plants & aesthetically pleasing it was inside. I absolutely love plants so We looked at their digital menu & decided to get a cold brew latte and me, not liking coffee, got the hot chocolate. The girl that took our order was very sweet and super pretty (Asian girl with classes and blonde-ish hair) & was super helpful to help us decide what we wanted! We waited off to the side until our drinks were called out. The hot chocolate was delectably smooth and the chocolate wasn't too bitter at all. They also added salted caramel and it made the drink sweet but not sickenly so. I absolutely LOVED the hot chocolate and would definitely get it again. My boyfriend also loved his cold brew. He said that the flavor was deep, rich, and wasn't bitter, and brewed to perfection. He just wished that they didn't put so much ice inside (it took up over half of the cup) & that they put a little less milk, but he knows to request it next time! The only gripe that I have about this place are the number flies that hang out in the middle of the coffee shop due to all the plants. Definitely will be back. Am a Pasadena Local and was more than excited to come home from our work trip to the opening of Boy and the Bear! We've been driving by just so excited to go! The aesthetics are absolutely on point. Coffee was ABSOLUTELY amazing- compared to lattes I've been used to which are normally just tastes like purely all milk. Coffee is absolutely delicious and crisp. The vanilla syrup I asked for was amazing and not to sweet. Portions are also generous- as I've stopped going to some local coffee shops since they overcharge for a small small tiny coffee that seems like a costco sized sample. I rarely am impressed by coffee these days since I've been so blessed to be well traveled and tasted amazing international coffee. But we were not disappointed by Boy and the Bear! My NEW favorite spot! Parking was not a hassle in my opinion. Street parking is pretty ample on green street in Pasadena if one is patient and just willing to walk a little bit. Since I currently live in SF (known for obscene parking situations) I have nothing to complain about it. read more

Wow, this spot is very overrated. As soon as I received my order I was told in a rude manner by the barista to bus my own dirty flatware when I was finished (WTH never has anyone needed to tell me that). I did not hear this barista tell that to other non-BIPOC patrons. We had some pastries that we asked to be warmed. This made the pastries very hard since they were already old. However, I will say that the flavor of the pistachio was good. One of the beverages was very bitter and left a very acidic after taste. Not a fan of that. The latte that I had was very tasty. I would rather have Jameson Brown Coffee in Pasadena. Their coffee has better flavor and no microaggressions with my beverages. I will not even get into that. I will comment on the fact that if an establishment is asking for tips (which I did graciously give) you should be taking my dirty flatware or else why tip if there is no service given? Stumbled upon this place while going to an early morning chiropractor appointment. Just ran in for a cup of drip coffee. While the coffee was just okay, the service was bland, dry and almost dismissive. I don't see the name of this establishment posted anywhere. So, I asked TWICE before getting an answer. Fantastic! Finally bringing more speciality coffee to Pasadena! Ordered the Carmen(don't remember the rest of the name) pour over. Best coffee I've had in a while, with super fun presentation. The place was wonderful to get some work done with wifi and a couple power outlets. Also, I shattered a plate while attempting to get some water-- the staff were extremely kind and forgiving.
