First of all I would like to start by saying the service was terrible, the guy at the cashier taking orders was extremely rude and inpatient. I politely asked him about their smoking policies as their was someone where we were sitting in the patio smoking cigarettes and the smell was suffocating and strong, the staff told me it's NYC and that if I don't like I should go somewhere else which was aggressive and rude. Furthermore the food was awful, their brownies tasted like they had put a cleaning detergent product inside it, and their waffles were soggy and looked old. If I could give less than a star I would. This establishment perpetuates a culture that is rude and racist. I (a Black woman) came in today to have lunch with a colleague (a white woman). I showed up before my colleague did and walked into an empty dining space inside and outside. I had my eyes set on a larger table so that my colleague and I would have space to spread out our work supplies over lunch. The owner was extremely rude, pointed to a two-person high-top table, and told me that the larger tables are reserved for larger parties. When my colleague showed up later, she had her eyes set on a larger table as well and when she asked if she could sit there the same man said to her "of course". I tried to shrug that experience off until 20 minutes later I witnessed another Black woman subjected to the same disrespect and mistreatment that I had when I first arrived. I went here regularly during my stay in the neighborhood, and usually got a regular coffee and a special (like a soup, or platter, etc.). The coffee tasted strong and woke me up, the soups and platter always tasted great (although, I wish the portions were bigger, especially for the price). The soup especially hit the spot on a cold rainy day. The staff is generally really friendly, greeting you right away and getting your orders accurately. There is also self-serve water on the corner near the cashier area. The ambience and design of this cafe/bar is awesome. The white walls and simple lettering of the coffee menu make it a clean and minimalistic, while the wood tables and chairs, and cute lighting give it a welcoming and cozy atmosphere. There are a good amount of seats, so it might be a good spot to catch up with a friend, have a business meeting, or just chill with a book or your laptop. There is a TV in the corner. It's a kind of a strange cafe, since in the evening it pretty much becomes a bar and stops serving coffee (which is why I can't really rate it 5 stars). Decided to drop in one evening to get coffee before going back home, but the cashier said no more coffee, so I still need to find an evening cafe in the area. But during the evenings, it would be a good spot to grab a beer. Their TV also shows sports games, so you could also watch games here if you're nearby. read more

Beer takes funny. Told the short tempered man on the phone behind the register, he argued with me and only gave me a smaller glass of same beer after protest. The beer tasted like soap. Been here before for drinks and they nice a nice selection of beers and live music. Came a second time during the day and bought a spinach smoothie (has soonish strawberry banana ...). When it got it, it was super watery and icy and they kindly remade one for me, but the taste still wasn't there (no taste of strawberry banana or spinach). Expected a bit more for $7. Honestly a pretty decent spot for great smoothies and more non-Asian drinks. I tried their bubble teas and as soon as I saw them take out powder flavoring that it was a bad idea. As a heavy bubble tea drinker, this was pretty bad. As soon as I took a sip, it was obvious that the flavor was artificial and just powder flavoring and sugar and the bubbles were definitely from last night. My colleague and I decided to support a small business and decided to get something to eat here. We were working in the area. We went inside and were looking to order, and the guy at the counter who appeared to be in a bad mood, was very impatient and unprofessional. My colleague started to order his food, and all of the sudden, this guy decided to walk outside, bring someone their food, and then comes back without saying a word. No apology, nothing. As I can see the other reviews, I now understand why. This person who works here should be fired, and hoping he is not the owner, then I feel bad for people who go there regularly. I would urge people not to go there, until this person is fired. My colleague ordered dumplings, one taco, and one orange juice, what appeared to be a mix of carrots and something else, cost him $22 which was ridiculous. I also ordered chicken quesadilla, and they sucked, the cheese was not melted through, and it was horrible. Before I had asked if the quesadilla comes with anything, and the guys response was NO, with a bad attitude of course, like I owed him something, but it came with some salad. I ordered an order of fries as well, which was $7, which was way too much, and and Pellegrino seltzer, total was $22. The food is overpriced and the quality is horrible, for the money I paid tbh and the staff, in this case, this person who shouldn't be there was the worst person I've come across a NYC restaurant so far. I haven't come across a place where the staff matches the food so harmoniously ( in a bad way). I was going to give this place a ( -10) stars but there is no option for that. In reading other reviews, it's clear that I'm not alone in being treated poorly by the A-hole who runs this place. I already had my issues with it because of the overpriced food, meh coffee, and why would a coffee shop have a $5 credit card minimum? Also even though I come their often, there is never a sense of familiarity, they make zero effort to be friendly. But I kept going because I live around the corner. My boyfriend and I went on a 90° Saturday morning to grab a coffee, low and behold it was largely empty because no one wants to eat sub-par breakfast food. So we grabbed a bagel around the corner and figured it would be ok to sit in their completely empty, very secluded outdoor booths, since we were customers after all and there was no one there and it was so damn hot. The aforementioned employee came out and told us, in a rude manner, that the sign says no outdoor food and when I tried to explain that we were customers, he said "well you only got a coffee" as if I was some lowly scum of the earth who couldn't read and cheaped out by ONLY buying a $5 pre-made iced coffee. He then stomped off back inside. I was more taken aback by his attitude and the fact that he was willing to lose a (pretty loyal) customer for what? So that the outdoor seating was completely empty? It's clear that he was butt-hurt that we didn't want his overpriced, awful bagels. So I went back inside and told him that I come here all the time and he just lost a loyal customer for no reason and he said "I'm here all the time and I never see you". I'm sorry that I wear a mask during a global pandemic when None of the employees here do. He then came out from behind the counter in an aggressive way that actually frightened me, and yelled at me that I was disrespectful and then told me to get out. Needless to say, I'm not going back and don't recommend you do either. We literally had to tell him go back off. The manager is a creep as well so I guess it stems from the top. Night staff is much nicer and provides a more welcoming environment. Food is hit or miss. Menu def need a revamp. Silverware is never clean and tables are always sticky. This place also has a serious fly and gnat problem. I was actually super excited about this place to open and to support its place. I was a big fan of their coffee. Just this one day where I earned my rewards from another coffee place. I was out with 2 other friends, i picked up my free coffee from the other place. Our next goal was "THE BUREN" so we came , my friends started ordering their food and drinks and we decided to sit outside. However. I always thought the owner was nice and kind, came out wrong he was very unfriendly, forcing me to leave the place with my friends - leave for good , even tho they just ordered food and drinks) only because I had my "free coffee" from a different place carrying with me- sitting "OUTSIDE" . We had to leave because of my coffee!!! I have never experienced this kind of rudeness. I have not even started drinking it n I started eating. Sadly, this bar/restaurant/coffee shop seemly has a lot going for it. Then, you interact with the guy at the counter (to place orders, etc) and it crashes and burns HARD. The counter guy (and possibly the owner?) is rude, crass and truly doesn't get the concept of customer service. (Or, just human relations for that matter). WOW!!! This place recently opened up just across the street from me and I have to say how lucky I actually am. The decor of the restaurant is modern and simple but also very cozy. The type of bar/restaurant you find yourself in for hours not evening noticing. The menu is very good with options for everyone. They also have a few specials that go out every so often so don't forget to inquire about that. They offer a la colombe draft that people tend really enjoy as well as other beers and ciders. I on the other hand find myself enjoying the cocktails more. It's a unique list of drinks and they also serve special cocktails on certain days (try the punch!). You will also find Tbe Buren to be a place of entertainment as they do open mic nights, Dj on the weekends, poetry night along with comedy! All in all, I'm very happy The Buren is finally open and I look forward to enjoying more of their offerings whenever I can. I highly recommend this place. read more
