I've been eyeing this spot for so long ever since I first heard about it, and finally got the chance to try it! They're only open for lunch, so make sure to come then. I ended up coming on a Monday around noon, and was able to order right away. You pay at the counter and they give you a number and you get to choose your own table. I highly recommend sitting in the back patio--its so nice! Everything on the menu here is vegan! I ordered the Killer BLAT which was served on sliced sourdough bread and had a piece of fried "chicken", "bacon", avocado, tomato, lettuce, and mayo. It was SO good. The chicken definitely didn't taste like real chicken but nonetheless was delicious. I did think the bacon tasted like actual bacon though. All together, the sandwich was so good and also a great size. Prices are pretty high for a sandwich, but honestly the quality is amazing. I feel like veganism (or attempting veganism) is a rite of passage for Berkeley students. My personal vegan phase was difficult and exacerbated by the lack of access to delicious, somewhat convincing meat alternatives. Lo and behold, a friend recommended The Butcher's Son, and I've been coming ever since (even after my short lived vegan era). The Butcher's Son, equipped with the friendliest staff, offers salads, sandwiches, and a few breakfast items, and I'd venture to say they're the best vegan restaurant Berkeley has. I will say though that while their mock meats aren't a far cry from the authentic counterparts, they still taste more than a bit different. The Butchers Son touts great vegan comfort food options that are surprisingly satisfying for even meat lovers. While driving around Berkeley, I would often see a line outside of The Butchers Son. When I found out it was a vegan location, my curiosity was intrigued as I never really find that vegan options rarely get that much attention. Plus, being vegan curious, I was willing to try it out. When I finally got around to trying it, the Butchers Son definitely did not disappoint! I tried the Buffalo Bacon Fried Chicken and the Smoked Jackfruit sandwiches. The Buffalo Fried Chicken had nice crispy chicken-alternative that was slathered in a pretty spicy buffalo sauce that paired so nicely with a smooth ranch dressing. It also came with strips of "bacon" that actually had the smoky saltiness that provided that extra layer of flavor and texture you would expect from a normal buffalo fried chicken sandwrich. The smoked jackfruit sandwich was a nice complement to the heavy Buffalo Bacon Fried Chicken sandwich. It contained thick and juicy jackfruit pieces mixed together with a garlic aioli, dijon mustard, grilled onions, and avocado that reminded me of a nice Cuban sandwich with a vegan twist. There is outdoor seating out in front, but also in the back. I found the eating area in the back particularly nice as it is away from the street and feels a little more private. Service was pretty fast and great. Parking in the Berkeley area is limited as usual so may have to park somewhere and walk over. 3.5 * Finally tried this very popular spot in Berkeley! If you ever drive by there is always a line of people waiting to eat here so when I saw no line I knew it was the day to try it! The restaurant is a vegan deli but you wont know that when you read the menu. The dishes have chicken, bacon etc. mentioned but be rest assured there is no meat or dairy in any of the dishes. I do wish they listed what they were serving instead.. since it wasn't written I asked and learned the chicken substitute is soy and gluten. The staff was nice and they have a weekday and weekend menu to select food from. I tried their Chicken Parm ($15 approx) and their Ruben sandwich ($16 approx) First of the sandwiches are pricey in my opinion, $30 + approx for both minus tax and tip. The portions are big so maybe thats why... In the chicken parm, the marinara and vegan cheese and had a good flavor and the bread was good too. I could not tell what I was eating as the chicken substitute but it was not dry and had a crispy edge to mimic chicken 7.5/10. It tasted like the fried tofu in ramen to me. The ruben was served with vegan pastrami and sauerkraut on toasted rye. The vegan pastrami was a bit too salty for my liking and left me thirsty at the end 5/10. It tasted like soy so if you like that, you will like this place. I have to give credit to the appearance of the sandwiches, they looked exactly like pastrami and chicken..just little less salt would be nice. I always see this place on Yelp, so I was so glad when I finally tried it! The line seems long, but it can go pretty fast. The sandwiches are done quickly, but the hemp pancakes have a longer wait. I ordered the lemon chicken sandwich - it didn't taste too much like chicken, but I still really liked it. The chicken was like a vegetable pancake, and the lemon sandwich sauce tasted so good! It was really perfectly savory and honesty really filling even though it wasn't real meat. I got the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was so vinegary and oily I couldn't eat more than a few bites before getting a stomach ache (Which is saying something, I LOVE greasy vegan burgers). Came here on a Sunday noon and was surprised there's not much a long line. The pickup process is efficiently. They use online ordering system, and took about 15 mins to get the order ready for pickup. Fresh ingredients, generous portion size, and full of flavor. I'm surprised the Something Healthy salad has a little bit of something that well complimented each other as a whole. You can add vegan BBQ pork, chicken, steak, tofu in addition, but the salad itself is fulfilling already. The chicken had a hard, crusty exterior and tasted like it had been sitting somewhere waiting for an order. Biting into it was bad enough but it was chewy and thick and dry....not what you want in a fried chicken sandwich. Prior to this, the sandwiches actually tasted like a decent fried chicken sandwich, with a tenderness throughout and was tasty and juicy. Last week's sandwich was tasteless. When it opened across the street from its current location over four years ago, there seemed to be a long queue of rather slender people outside waiting to make their healthy orders. I aspired to be one of them but probably thought it would be faster to get a burrito down the block. A few years have elapsed, and they've expanded. I, on the other hand, contracted... in a good way and now I like vegan food. Sure, I could've gone for the Chipotle Vegan Turkey Grinder or the Fried Mozzarella & Beyond or even better, the Vegan Steak & Egg Hoagie, I went conservative and ordered the $13.25 Something Healthy Salad with mixed greens, tri-color quinoa, chickpeas, cucumber, feta cheese, and avocado. They have an astronomical list of extras, at least 42 - count 'em, 42 optional selections that struck me as a bit nickel-&-dimey but I splurged and paid a dollar for grilled mushrooms and another dollar for grilled peppers. They made special mention of their allergens: trace gluten, coconut, cashew, garlic and onion.
