TL;DR: Extremely dissapointing, especially after hearing it hyped up so much. While I can't say there's a much better Vegan restaurant in the area, I'd still recommend trying your luck elsewhere regardless. Stopped by with a group of five on a Saturday around Noon, just in time for their brunch menu to be available. I'd heard a lot about the place, with people citing it as "THE place for vegans and non-vegans alike", and as a non-vegan, was quite excited. The place was pretty packed, and it was crowded indoors, with a sign saying food would take about 20 minutes to come out. After ordering, we were able to find some nice seating outside in their back patio. All their options seemed interesting, so I went in to split two entrees with my friend, ordering a #thisismyaddiction ($12.75) and a fried chicken bagelwich ($14.50). I give them props for the fast service, as we had barely sat down when they came out with our order--it was so fast, I almost wondered if they had given us the right food. Given the price, the portions were quite small, and the presentation left something to be desired. My fried chicken bagelwich came out with the bottom half burnt, and the #thisismyaddiction looked a bit amorphous with the tofu scramble, mozzarella, and avocado. I found the experience of both quite disappointing. The "fried chicken" on the bagelwich had no crunch, and the burnt bottom bun overwhelmed the rest of the flavors. Not great, but fine. I always love a boichik bagel, but I think I would much rather just directly patronize boichik's next time. The first point against the #thisismyaddiction was the complete lack of structural integrity-- just trying to pick up the sandwich caused more than half of the filling to fall out, making the eating experience develop into a hybrid of hand and fork. What ruined it for me was the textures and flavor of the sandwich itself. All the ingredients and bread came together to just taste like a sandwich of mush, where I could really only barely taste avocado. It has straight up never happened before, but I could not bring myself to finish it. However, I will say that there were some other items that looked solid on the other tables as I was heading out--the mozzerella sticks and french fries especially drew my eye. But there was a rack to the right for DoorDash.. so if I ordered through DoorDash for pick up, it would be waiting on that rack and I could just grab it and go? I wish they did the same for online orders. When I made it to the register, I said I had an online order. The food was ready and bagged in an area behind them. The employee grabbed it and handed it to me. Prior to picking up, one of the items I ordered wasn't available so I had four missed calls, no message. I so wanted to love this place!! It had been on my list for the longest time and some of my vegan friends rave about it. My bf is vegan and we thought it would be a regular place we could frequent together. Finally made it with my bf and coworkers for a pre-holiday lunch. Make sure to go to the newer location across the street from the old one on University. We arrived around 11a on a Saturday and looked like it was filling up. There is a market to the left and the dining area on the right. You order at the front first, get a # and grab a table. We decided to get a variety of sandwiches- cold cuts with all meats, jalapeño business, beyond mozzarella, steak and eggs, a cannoli and a donut-stuffed pancake. The cannoli and donut were ok- the cashew-based ricotta really emulated ricotta and the donut pancake was what you would expect. Like some of the other reviews, I and the rest of my table agreed that the "meats" were very salty and over seasoned. I took a few bites of my Beyond Mozzarella and, while I appreciated the effort, I just didn't like the textures and the overall flavors. First off, my to-go order took 40 minutes to get to me. 30 minutes into waiting, I finally asked if someone could check up on my food. Even though I was cleary sitting there waiting for my food no one ever bothered to ask me anything about why I was waiting. The lady comes back 5 minutes later and apologized saying that my order for some reason was not put in. She said it was a computer glitch and that she'd get my food and give me a refund (but she never did). She then came back with the food and says "oh someone gave you the wrong number that's why you never got the sandwich and then walked away as if her promise for a refund no longer mattered because it was not the computer's fault. Someone still gave me the wrong number and she never bothered to ask me about my order even though I was sitting there for 40 minutes and I saw her asking all these other folks about an order and she was just ignoring me the whole time. As for the food, it was sub-par. I ordered the garlic chicken pesto sandwich and it was too salty and looked and tasted fake. I am so disappointed with this place and the fact that I spent over $14 plus tip (that they didn't even deserve but the cashier looked at me while I was on the tip page, which is unprofessional). I was so thankful I had the opportunity to try this place while I was in town! They close early on several days so make sure to plan accordingly. They are also almost always very busy so give yourself time to wait and dine. My friend and I shared the meatball sub and the cold cut sandwich with the lemon garlic chicken and we loved both of them! I am such a fan of this place and as a meat eater that is saying a lot! Whenever I'm in Berkeley I always make sure to stop in for a sandwich because they are always so delicious and it's a great way to get something tasty without feeling heavy afterward! 100% recommend the chicken Parm sub. It is my typical go to. The garlic bread is toasted to perfection with buttery garlic goodness, and the tomato sauce on the Parm sandwich is to die for. The faux chicken meat is always seasoned very well and everything compliments each other without being overpowering. The only reason I give this place four stars instead of five is because you are going to spend a little more money for this vegan food than a traditional sandwich shop. The inside of the store is currently just for ordering and then you have to step back outside and walk towards the back of the building to their outdoor backyard seating area. Its actually quite nice on a sunny day and there were enough tables when I was there around 1pm. I ordered the Sweet Mustard Chicken sandwich which did not disappoint. The "chicken" was crunchy and went well with the sandwich. I just wish it was a little thicker when they formed the "chicken" patty to fry it so its a little more substantial. I ordered the Killer BLAT this time (last time it was the chicken parm) and as soon as I picked up the sandwich, my fingers pushed through the wet bread. Disgusting. I ate the sandwich by picking it apart and ultimately I was only able to eat the vegetables and faux meats (thankfully the "meat" was not mushy this time around). I don't know if you can ask the workers to toast the bread, perhaps I should have, but regardless, a restaurant should not provide a guest with a mush sandwich. As well a mini market with a handful of vegan groceries and desserts. They have indoor and outdoor seating. This place was just down the street from my motel in Berkeley. Covid still has things working weird on the West Coast so I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to end up with here. Ended up with a very good sandwich. Got the BLAT chicken sandwich and while their sign says they're a 'vegan butcher' they can make a damn fine chicken sandwich. This is my favorite sandwich place -- everything on the menu is appealing, there's a wide variety and everything I have had is delicious. My favorite is the Killer BLAT -- and the cannoli! The deli case has excellent packaged vegan cheeses, sauces, and deli slices -- the feta and the parm are delicious: salty, cheesy, perfect for salads or pasta or cooking. They also have a freezer section with frozen pot pies and other prepared foods, as well as a dry goods area with vegan staples (which is very helpful since we lost Animal Place Vegan Republic last summer). And to not feel like you're sacrificing flavor while you're working your way through their 100% plant-based menu... Amazing! Caesar salad - so yummy and creamy, but a little on the salty side. They're generous with their dressing, so a half portion is quite filling. Chicken parm - all textures were spot-on. Most chicken breasts in regular chicken parm tend to turn out dry, so this was the best iteration of chicken parm I've ever had! I really didn't miss the meat at all! Super satisfying comfort food. It's a huge sandwich, and can easily be split between 2 people. Pineapple & coconut cheesecake - I LOVE raw cheesecakes! The cashew base produces a similar velvety-smooth and indulgent cheesecake, but feels way less heavy. I almost went back for a second slice, it was that good! All the food came out in under 10 minutes, so this is a great option if you're looking just to grab a quick bite. Don't forget to grab some vegan groceries from the market in front of the restaurant on your way out - vegan snacks line the shelves, and refrigerator is stocked with vegan cheese, soups, salads, wraps and more. My recent experience wasn't as stellar as previous ones. Sad to not see see the meatball mozz and grinder on the menu, but it's been a while and I appreciate newly added items. We decided to try the fried chicken sandwich with bacon and blue cheese. The chicken was good, the bacon was very ok. Not crispy as one would imagine. But, overall the sandwich had good flavor. It could've been GREAT but there was barely any blue cheese on it. We couldn't even taste it. Bummer. Next up is the highly praised Rueben which was our biggest let down. -the grilled onions weren't really grilled. Closer to uncooked. Once again BARELY any dressing on it. I think they forgot the Swiss cheese too. The meat texture is very okay. I was expecting to be blown away. The best vegan rueben I've ever had still doesn't compare to Mendocino Farms Mrs. Goldfarb Rueben made of beets and chickpeas. Hands down, the best and probably exceptionally difficult to beat. We're likely to return here as a supporter of small business and vegan establishments. I just hope Butcher's son refocuses on quality. read more
