The food is good and the menu is huuuuge, with a great vegan variety of sandwiches and salads. Anytime I come here I always consider taking a to-go meal for later because it all looks soooo good! The service, though, is as terrible as the food is good. The employees are lazy, they make customers wait even though they don't do anything, and they have terrible attitudes. They don't seat you, come to take your order, bring you your food, or clean the table after--- AND HAVE THE NERVE TO ASK FOR A TIP??! Absolutely not. Zero star employees (not the cooks!), do not tip these lazy hipsters. They should be tipping the customers for doing their entire job for them, aside from putting in an order on an iPad. 5 stars for food, 0 for service, but I'll bump it to a 3 stars for the chefs. Caprese and potato salad: will recommend until I die. I debated on giving 3 or 4 stars because though the food was absolutely fantastic there were a few problems. The first and most noticeable is all the food on the floor. The entire time I was there only once did an employee wipe the table but they also did what the customers were doing: bushing all scraps, dry or wet, onto the floor. There were gnats and flies as well. One major issue I found was this: A person knocked over a huge stack of plastic water glasses and then placed them back with the clean ones (and promptly left with out ordering). I had no idea where dirty ones would go so I let a staffer know, they never got to taking them off the clean stacks and I proceeded to watch people grab cups from a stack that landed on the nasty foot mat by the door. Another lady then knocked the same exact stack over and only put half in a random bin sitting near by (clearly this stack needs to NOT be there!). My issue is that they were made aware of something unsanitary and that needed attention, he could have even told me where to place them, but they did nothing about it. They are also so small people can barely get into seats with out making others get out of theirs to make room though that's the norm in Berkeley... PS*this does not affect my rating*: If you see a medium build divorced (she made that very loud and clear by her conversations with her son) blonde lady with a 5-6 year old blonde son that won't sit in his chair DO NOT SIT NEAR HER! Her kid was dancing around the small area in peoples way, she had her son purposefully kick my mothers chair several times (apparently because she did not want others sitting there), she spoke so loud I couldn't hear my mother 5 inches from my face, and she made many passive aggressive comments to my mother that I hadn't heard due to tuning her out that would have gotten her a true a** whooping. I love the butchers son, this place is my favorite place to go ! I live in Santa Rosa and go down there because it's that good, the mozzarella sticks are so good and the fried chicken is like the best. I'm vegan and I think it's great that they call it by the names of like what traditionally we would call animal products i.e. beef, cheese etc. because animal products aren't beef it's a cow and it's not cheese it's stolen milk meant for a baby calf. so I think it's awesome taking those inanimate object names from the meat eaters! also the name of the shop is great on so many levels we need to realize that the current system is not sustainable and places like this are helping people you understand that humans give up nothing to be compassionate. read more

I have loved the butchers son ever since my husband took us there on our first date. However, the elimination of fried mozzarella sticks from the menu obligated me to remove 3 stars from it. The food was very good but my order arrived wrong. When I pointed it out the waitress said she would go check the order and never returned - I guess she did not believe me. So I finally took my plate to the kitchen and told them to fix it. The waitress brought the plate back - NO apology - just set it down. The line was super long so I ordered as I stood in line and my food was ready before I reached the register to order. I definitely recommend the fried mozzarella!! Super bomb! The "bacon" is also bomb so any sandwich with the bacon is a good choice. The cheesecake is rich and creamy. I like the plain and the pineapple cheesecakes. The rocky road is also good. Basically, everything that I've had the chance to try, I loved! Even if you aren't vegan/vegetarian, give this place a try. This is one of my favorite spots in Berkeley! Definitely not for the health-conscious, but delicious all the same for people who miss old-fashioned, cheesy American food and sandwiches after turning vegan. I went here about a year ago with one of my omnivorous friends, and she too, loved her sandwich! The portion sizes are large and they also offer a side with your order, so I definitely think that the food is worth the price (especially in Berkeley). My favorite sub to devour is the meatball grinder. They apparently home-make the cheeses here, and it shows in the taste. Their mozzarella is the closest I've had to the non-vegan version, and is the one vegan cheese that I consistently crave! The best version I've had is in their breaded mozzarella sticks, which showcases it in all its' oozy, gooey glory. I usually skip the buffalo version and pair the marinara with these instead, since the spicy, sour taste of the buffalo sauce is not really to my taste. If you'd like treat for dessert, their cannoli is amazing. It's not cloying, but creamy and has a slightly sweet taste that lingers on the tongue. Another plus is the people. Definitely some of the kindest and best customer service I've ever gotten at an eatery at this area. Don't miss this place, even if you are non-vegan. It's definitely worth a try! read more

Actually shared a few dishes with 2 chef friends and they felt just as rotten as I did after the meal. So i live about an hour away from you guys and I made the trip all the way out here with my party of 5. I have worked with him in his catering business, and he insisted on only the best ingredients.So I come with high expectations. I was so impressed with the Caesar Salad, with fried chicken that I May just return tomorrow to try out something else. The salad was so tasty, and generous, I had to take it home. The chicken was hot and crispy, something that I had been missing. The fried capers were a good substitute for the anchovy's, which is something I would use in my own kitchen. I have waited a long time to write this review because I kept praying that things will just get better I've even reached out to staff and got a response that was sadly less than professional so now I am telling the planet. Over the last few months my orders have been incomplete, The food has taken on a flavor and a texture that is unpleasant and the personality of staff has definitely gone downhill since I first started patronizing this place about three years ago my most recent trip I placed an order for two sandwiches and since there was no seating in the front I step down to the back. After about 15 minutes I went inside and caught the eye of the woman at the front register. When she had a moment I asked if my number had been called she interrupted me to say someone would help me shortly which I interpreted to mean maybe yes. Instead this young gentleman comes from around the corner to explain to me that orders are processed and served in the order that they are received as if I don't know what a freaking line is . I stared at them for a moment then I explained to him I understand how lines of work that I simply couldn't hear the numbers that were being called out and I want to know if my number had been called out to which he responded a little sheepishly that he would check, why the first young woman didn't do this in the first place is beyond me. He returned a few seconds later to let me know that they had not called my number but that it was coming up soon. OK no problem I find a seat next to another patron in the very front in between the drink machines the woman sitting next to me is served first by the same woman who gave me attitude at the cash register who brings this woman's sandwich over places it down next to her takes her number and walks away without saying a single word. Then she comes over to me and does the same exact thing ! No eye contact just a " take your shit and go" kind of vibe. That treatment was incredibly rude, incredibly unprofessional and we have decided as a family that we are not going to return to the Butcher's son. I have had orders of donuts that were incomplete and upon arriving home and when I called immediately to try to rectify the situation the phone just rings and rings and rings. We pay almost four dollars a doughnut and we are crossing the Carquinez bridge for these guys. I have searched for an email address to complain about other sandwiches that when I receive them I ended up just throwing them away because the quality has seriously gone to crap ( your steak tasted like someone threw cocoa powder in it, yuck!)Honestly we should've given up on you guys along time ago we were hoping these are growing pains but it's now obvious you prefer quantity over quality. My husband and I were looking for a lunch spot and were excited to try this place out, with such great reviews. We were sadly disappointed. On a Friday afternoon, it took quite a while to get our food. When the food came, neither of us enjoyed the food at all. I had the buffalo fried chicken sandwich and he had the bacon burger. The buffalo sandwich was drenched with sauce, which completely overwhelmed everything, leaving the sandwich soggy and one-note. It was barely heated at all, seemed more luke-warm. I couldn't even finish half of it. The burger was lack-luster and my husband only finished it because he was starving. We've been to multiple vegan places, but this has been our least favorite so far. The only saving grace to this meal was the bacon mac salad. And the price is on the high side for what you get. $32 for bad 2 sandwiches. I would not recommend this place and I'm not sure why this place is so highly rated unless today was an off day for them. read more

I would move to Berkeley for this 100% plant-base restaurant. I had the hot garlic lemon chicken pesto sandwich with a side of pickle. The portion is big for me. It took care of my lunch and dinner. I would recommend to eat it while it's freshly made, though it was still tasty cold. The second visit I ordered some donuts and a hot cocoa with oat milk. The cocoa was creamy with the oat milk and perfect sweetness for me. The donuts were however average, assuming they were not made in the restaurant, I didn't ask. My other families had the Hero with beef and potatoes side , buffalo bacon ranch fried chicken with Mac 'n cheese side, and grilled cheese with pickle side. I tased the beef and it was the similar texture as the chicken and satisfying for people that are not committed to a plant-base diet. The buffalo ranch fried chicken was my least favorite, I don't like fried food and the texture of the chicken was a little tough for my taste. I tried my daughter's grilled cheese sandwich and tasted the bacon, it was exquisite, and it could convince any meat eaters to stop eating real meat.
