You walk into this Canadian pub just off 9th Ave and immediately feel like you've somehow crossed the border without going through TSA. The walls plastered with a glorious mishmash of framed photos--old hockey heroes, team portraits, strangers who look like they definitely knew a guy who knew a guy. Above the bar hangs a giant moose head, staring down at everyone with the quiet authority of a Mountie who's seen some things. The TV's are tuned to some kind of sport, naturally, because apparently Canadians are physically incapable of watching television unless somebody is keeping score. Then there's the whiskey. A surprisingly deep bench of Canadian bottles lined up behind the bar, there's a real variety here, enough to make a whiskey nerd settle in for the evening and enough to make a curious novice feel like they've wandered into a very friendly master class. In my opinion the best move? The whiskey flights. Instead of committing to one bottle like some kind of monogamist, you can work your way through several pours side by side, tasting the differences across Canadian distilleries and styles. It's basically a tiny road trip across Canada, while you stay planted at the bar. I actually made a stop at the Irish bar down the street before landing here, which made the whole evening feel less like bar-hopping and more like an extremely efficient international tour. Went to The Canuck on 9th Avenue in Chelsea to watch the World Cup before dinner nearby. It is a Canadian sports bar that's pretty open and spacious, by New York City standards. When I arrived, it was pretty busy, and I found a table in the back while waiting for my friend. The space is lined with televisions throughout, as you walk in, there is a long bar up front, then many tables and booth seating. After I sat down, a server came over with menus almost immediately. I ordered a Magners cider ($8), and they also had a good selection of beers on tap, along with bottled and canned options. The menu also included cocktails, wine, and a full food menu. Although I did not order any food, what I saw coming out of the kitchen looked good Overall, this is a good option if you are in the neighborhood and looking for a sports bar. It is fairly large by New York City standards, making it well suited for groups or anyone wanting to watch a match in a lively atmosphere. 1 star. This review is for the newer 7th Avenue location. I came in early for Game 3 of the Knicks Finals specifically so I could grab a seat at the bar before the crowd arrived. I ordered a turkey sandwich and a drink and settled in to watch the game. The first issue was that the sandwich took over 45 minutes to arrive, and nobody mentioned the delay or checked in about it. Annoying, but not the end of the world during a packed Finals game. What happened next was. After I finished my drink, one bartender - a larger guy with curly hair - picked up my empty can, banged it on the bar twice, and said, "Bro, do you want another one?" I replied, "I'm good for now, thanks." He then told me, "You need to keep ordering drinks if you want to keep your seat. There are lots of people behind you drinking who would take your seat." I honestly thought he was joking. I told him I had already ordered food and a drink, arrived early, and was there to watch the game. He basically repeated that if I wasn't continuing to order drinks, someone else would take my spot. I've been going to bars for over 20 years and have never had a bartender tell me I needed to keep buying alcohol in order to keep a seat after already ordering food and drinks. I've certainly never had one say it in such a rude and confrontational way. To be clear, my issue is not with the rest of the staff. Everyone else seemed to be working hard during an incredibly busy night, and I still left a 20% tip because I know tips are shared. My issue is with one bartender who apparently thinks pressuring customers into buying more drinks is acceptable customer service. There are plenty of great places in NYC to watch a game. This was my first visit to True North, and unfortunately it will be my last. read more

Came in for a FIFA match and the atmosphere delivered exactly what you'd want for that: packed, loud, energetic. Service held up well under pressure too, the servers stayed quick and on top of things even with the place slammed. Food, unfortunately, was just okay. Mixed experience at the new location. The younger bartenders and the door guy are wonderful. I get that playoffs are stressful, but I wasn't expecting a male bartender to tell me 'you know you have a front row seat - other people would take your seat' near the beginning of the second period because I guess I wasn't ordering drinks fast enough for him. I order about 1 cocktail every 45 minutes and I noticed he didn't pester any of the guys around me to order more. (I tipped my original bartender well because he was great). Out and about on a Monday night to support our neighbors to the North, we finally took the trek to what might be the city's only Canadian sports bar. The decor (hockey, flags, and a friendly looking stuffed moose) is on point while TV's were focused on the Stanley Cup playoffs, baseball, and....Canadian election results. The menu is mostly standard pub fare (burgers, wraps, heartier entrees) with a few poutine choices to boot. The drinks list features some Canadian brews and the bar stocks some tough to find Canadian whiskys. Fun bar in Chelsea with pretty solid pub fare and a good selection of beers - that fully embraces its Canadian heritage and theme. We came over specifically to watch Ovechkin score his record-setting 895th goal in the NHL, which he did. Showed up 30 minutes before the game (bar opens at 12:00 pm) just to be safe and snag a couple good seats, but in the end it wasn't even necessary - despite the big game, the bar wasn't exactly packed. But it was pleasantly full once the game started. Staff here are nice and fairly quick, and food comes out just as fast. You can get a couple Canadian beers here on tap or in a bottle, which is nice - and they have a few other Canadian specialties, including the Cesar Cocktail, the Nanaimo Bar dessert, and of course various types of poutine. Again, the overall quality of the food is solid. Nothing more and nothing less than you'd expect from a decent bar. Over the course of the game we got ourselves two beers, a cider, a cocktail, an order of nachos, one of poutine, and a dessert - and ended up spending just over $100 with tip. So it may not be super cheap, but by NYC prices it's not expensive either. What makes me want to come back, besides the fairly good service, is the ambience. It's kinda cool to have something of an expat bar for Canucks and for big hockey fans in general. I went to The Canuck for the NHL Draft because they had advertised that they would be showing it. Unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. The draft was only playing in the back, and despite the bar being advertised as a Canadian bar, staff seemed annoyed when people asked for it to be put on. Two of the bartenders. were incredibly rude, including one who cursed at me after getting i didnt say my freinds last name for the tab rven though he only asked for the first name. He then proceeded to curse and yell at me. When another customer asked for the NHL Draft to be shown, a server yelled at her and acted very unprofessionally. The bartenders were also rude while we were ordering beers. It's unfortunate because the atmosphere itself was good, and it seemed like many people in the bar wanted the draft on. A member of our party arrived at 5:30, claimed a big table, Stefanie said that was ok if we all came, and he gave his card to her and promised we'd all order drinks. He proceeded to order two buckets of drinks, several dishes, and individual drinks on top of that as the rest of our group arrived. We were a group of 6 by the start of the second inning, with a $200 tab, and the rest of the group still waiting in the line outside. Stefanie came and told us we have to order more or let go of the table -- we pushed back because we didn't want anymore food at the time, which is when she announced that there was a $500 minimum we will need to hit. There was no mention of a minimum, and even less so of a concrete number for it when we grabbed the table, and it seems egregious that she'd be applying pressure to spend more and causing a scene when we've spent over $200 before the second inning. While we wanted to enjoy the Jays game, we left with a sour taste of our first Canuck experience. We were also there to celebrate a friend's birthday and were frustrated to have to leave under such conditions. We were essentially kicked out, as we were getting the cheque, Stephanie tried to charge us regular price for drinks ordered during happy hour. The manager was trying to be cordial and offered us his card, said to email him about the incident, but we did so and it's been over a week with no reply. Disappointed and will not be going back. As lifelong hockey fans, we were very excited to find this place- even making the trip from Jersey as often as once a week just because we loved hockey so much and we wanted to find a true hockey bar- unfortunately this is not it. While there are many TVs- they are not always on and if they are on- they are not playing hockey when hockey is on. You'd think- if you are a hockey bar- and there is an NHL game on- you'd have it on- NOPE. Instead, the TVs in the back room are on the screensaver- so we had to flag down a server and ask to have the game turned on. There have even been times when we have been there when they have had replays of regular season NFL games from several days prior- INSTEAD of hockey- just doesn't make sense for a bar that claims to be a hockey bar. The food is not good. We were having to grab food beforehand from somewhere else or leave to go eat because of how mediocre the food is. The chicken in the wrap was unseasoned and often seemed undercooked and we did not feel same eating it. I ordered the Turkey BLT once and was served a giant hunk of dry Thanksgiving turkey that even my dog wouldn't eat when I brought it home to him. Even something as simple as French Fries just never tasted good. The service was the final straw for us. We have travelled all over the world and been to bars in the City and every city- and never have we had a bartender just shove a seltzer at us and say "you get what you get" when it comes to flavor, "we don't play the flavor game". Excuse me? I am not a child- food/drink service I am paying for should never been a "You get what you get, and you don't get upset" deal. It is rude, demeaning and just unnecessary. They make it feel like they are doing you a favor by giving you a drink and that you should just shut up and be grateful. The bartenders are rude, and even when the bar is not busy- do not want to make drinks or serve beverages. They would rather sit at the end of the bar and talk then serve paying customers. Ultimately, all this is a shame because this place has some much potential. The decor is super cool for a hockey fan like me to look at and appreciate and the city is so in need of a good hockey bar- this place just ain't it. read more

I give this bar a 4.5 - the ambiance, food, and service as well as the devotion to Canada and hockey is a 5 but there were several fruit flies that kept flying around our food/us so that's why I dock half a point - the rest was great. My husband ordered a beer and I got a margarita. We got a salad to start and then I got the buffalo chicken wrap and my husband ordered the burger - both came with fries. All the food and drinks were super tasty and the service was quick and efficient. It was cold outside so coming in for food and to watch the hockey game was a lot of fun and really cozy. We had been there on a previous trip to NY and it was during playoffs and packed - no where to sit but this trip it was a lot quieter so we got to stay for a bit and really relax and enjoy ourselves for a bit.
