Ate there this evening. The waiter convinced me that I should make my steak medium and NOT medium rare as I usually do. He said it was "pink" in the middle and if that's the way I like it, then that's the way to go. I was saying if it's too rare I can always send it back. He wasn't going for that. Anyway wound up getting it medium and sure enough "pink" only in the middle of the steak and both ends cooked medium well. He knew I looked at him like "wtf" and he started babbling to cover up his BS of not knowing what to say. This was a 10oz filet so really all I could bare to eat was 1/3 of it. He was such an insistent "know it all" and should have went with my gut at $55 for something I didn't want. I was so tempted to leave him zero tip. That's what he deserved. Decided to have Date Night at a local spot. Having passed Capital Grille, located at Garden State Plaza Mall, countless times and being told it had good food and was decent priced seemed like the perfect spot. The overall experience was nice; service was on point, our waiter very attentive. But the atmosphere was not my vibe, it was ideal for eat and go to bed. The super dim dining room lighting will put your ass straight to sleep, especially if you're already tired. While the food appeared to be well prepared and quite tasty, here is where the 2 stars come in...40 mins after consuming the South African Lobster, lobster mac n cheese, and 2 drinks (poorly crafted) my throat starting feeling very different. The next day I was in bed all day lethargic, throat flared up...all plans cancelled. I was sick. Appears I contracted a virus. It took nearly 3 weeks to recover. Don't know what the hell or Who the hell came to work sick. But I'm officially over Capital Grille. read more

We were at a wake on Long Island and we're leaving at about 8 o'clock and we're very hungry. We figured we could be in New Jersey in a couple hours so we look for a place with outdoor seating that had steak. We made an outdoor dining reservation on open table fir 2 at 10 PM. The restaurant closes at 11 PM. We only eat outdoors because of Covid. When we arrive there, the hostess told us they can only seat us inside. I told them I made a reservation on open table for outside dining and we've been traveling for two hours and haven't eaten all day. I told her that we don't eat inside and since we made the reservation and we've been traveling for two hours they should honor it, and they refused.There was another couple sitting outside. The hostess told me that they were sitting there for four hours and we know that wasn't true. Capital Grille should've honored the reservation and because they didn't my opinion of Capital Grill is tarnished forever. read more

Racist! I made a reservation for 3 at 3:30pm for 3/12/2021. I made the reservation one week ahead of time due to Covid 19 limited seating. There is a 15 min grace period before you lose your reservation. We arrived at 3:40pm, I checked in with one of the 3 ladies at the front desk. After 3 min one of the ladies asks me if we'd prefer outdoor or indoor seating, we chose indoor, she then says there isn't any indoor seating at this time. I replied to that by saying I made a reservation therefore there should be a table held for my party. She then says that we've missed the 15 min grace period and that we lost the reservation. I'at this point it's exactly 3:45pm and I've given them my name at 3:40pm. Fortunately another one of the 3 host says to the racist host that she's already checked us in and to take us to our table indoors. The racist host picks up 3 menus and just starts walking, she doesn't say please follow me or your table is this way. I then ask her are we supposed to follow you? She says yes seats us in at a table in an area with 3 empty socially distanced tables. She sits us at a table that has a filthy table cloth. I called her back and asked her to move us to another table in that area with clean linen. One of the people in my party thanks the racist hostess to defuse the tension. She completely ignores her and sets the table with an attitude. Our actual sever was amazing very pleasant and respectful, the food was really good but I won't dine here again. Racism will not be tolerated in 2021, especially when I am a paying consumer. read more

Wanted to give a shout out to Dominic's performance Saturday night (3/12). My son and I went to celebrate his 17th birthday and Dominic treated him like a king. A birthday card awaited him. They had chairs removed to make room for his walker he used to get around. The marshmallow creme brûlée crusted cheesecake they brought out for my son's birthday cake on the house was mouth watering. This was the first steak house I ever went to so there's some nostalgia involved with this review. I've been to this location 2-3 times, and each time has been great. The menu has a lot of great items, but the highlights for me were the calamari, the french onion soup, bone in kona and the lobster mac and cheese. No matter what you decide to get, definitely make sure you get at least these. The staff was excellent as well, they always have the best recommendations. read more

Simply a very good dining experience. They don't really have one standout cut or dish, but they're doing everything well. They're not on the level of some of the finer steakhouses I've patronized, and not quite on the level of a couple of other Capital Grilles I've been to, but still a fine meal. Not to mention the fact that we didn't have to leave NJ and head into NYC. The price point is a touch high when compared to some similar joints of this ilk, but not unreasonably so. Our service was exceptional. Attentive, friendly, courteous and on point, while not at all intrusive. Really couldn't have asked for better, with a shout out to Cesar who really took our dining experience to the next level. The meal was appropriately paced, and they truly paid attention to detail. We lucked into a spot right in front, but had we not, the valet would have been a great option, given just how busy Garden State Plaza gets at most times. We had a couple of their specialty cocktails which really were enjoyable. The food overall was very good and on point. Tuna Tartare, served with a spicy Sriracha over a bed of cucumber and avocado with a touch of mango. Very refreshing. We did the 10 oz Filet, and the Porcini Crusted Bone-in Ribeye. Both were cooked perfectly to order. The Filet was seasoned nicely, very basic salt/pepper/butter. The Ribeye had a great texture from the Porcini, and the Balsamic Glaze was delicious. Cesar, our server, must have overheard me mention that it was my wife's birthday. He decorated or table with balloon confetti, brought a couple glasses of complementary Champagne, and brought us a complementary dessert as well. As for the dessert, the cheesecake, served Brûlée style was outrageous, while the flourless chocolate espresso cake was decadent. Capital Grille is known for their excellent selection of steaks. Although their steaks are always grilled as I ask, have amazing flavor, are juicy and many more, their seafood is phenomenal! If you have not tried Capital Grille, you will be amazed when you do. Some of my favorite appetizers are the crab, tuna tartare and the lobster bisque soup. These are truly my favorite and have I have never encountered raw or overcooked food. As well as their amazing appetizers and entrees they have delicious desserts such as, the crepe brûlée, espresso chocolate cake and their cheesecake. Waited long to get in. Waited extremely long to get food. Even waited for my second beer. Steak was a dried out cold piece of meat. The only thing I can say it was very expensive. Racist !!!!!!!! I called about an hour before and asked if a 630 reservation would be available, the lady said no but they will have something at 7:15 I said OK and put my name down. I arrived at this restaurant at 7:10 PM and she says she doesn't have my name listed and she told us that we have to leave by 7:15 not that our reservation was at 7:15. She absolutely did not say that because why would I arrive at 7:10?? We walked ourselves to an open high table and received slow ass service. It took forever to even get our first round drinks And the menu was extremely limited. We were told to sit at the high tables and we would be transferred to a lower ceiling table when they opened up, we clearly see in Walkens be seated swiftly to the lower table while we stay there. They didn't try to accommodate us didn't apologize for the stupid way to messing up our reservation or anything. I would never return to this place, and I know it was racism because we were the only BLACK people in the restaurant at the time and we totally felt that. Surely overpriced for the quality of food - that was the consensus of the 4 of us who went to dinner here on Saturday night. The Good: Valet parking right outside their door. Such an added bonus since it's attached to Garden State Plaza and is mayhem on any night of the week. Service - very good. Was able to have small talk and made sure our glasses were full. Also checked on us every once. Sides (minus one): Asparagus and mushrooms (separate sides) were a hit! Dessert - Chocolate cake and coconut custard pie were fabulous. Enough to bring some home. Wine - great pinot's available but for a hefty price. The Not-So-Good: The most important part - the food. My steak came out room temp...not cool. Asked to have them heat it up. Returned 30 seconds later...pretty much the same story. A quality steak comes out sizzling and seasoned perfectly. Especially since it was The Bone-In Kona (coffee/chocolate rub). My wife was pleased with her Salmon but admitted it could have used a bit more seasoning. Lobster Mac n Cheese was a let down. First they forgot to bring it out. It finally came out when we were 3/4 into our meal. Only reason it finally came out is because the GM came by and realized something wasn't right. They were a disappointment anyway. Boiling hot yet the middle portion was luke warm...although it's recommended on several reviews, for $17 I would skip it...but they did comp us for them since it was their mistake. This was my second visit to Capital Grille in Paramus. The first visit was for lunch and this visit was to celebrate Tron's birthday. Yes, I have a friend nicknamed Tron. Capital Grille pays special attention to any kind of celebration. Our table was decorated and there was a handwritten card waiting for Tron. They began our meal by bringing us three complimentary glasses of champagne with a raspberry floating within. Three types of bread were served with our meal. The very dark one seemed to be the most popular. I didn't taste it. I nibbled on the matzoh-like one. Tron had a huge wedge salad with bacon and Thousand Island dressing (which they happily substituted in lieu of Blue Cheese). I swear it was half a head of iceberg. Wife had the smoked salmon platter with capers, diced onions, dill mayonnaise and zesty onion pita crisps. She enjoyed it very much.! Another huge portion. My appetizer was the fried calamari with hot peppers. They were perfectly fried and very spicy! Another huge portion which is really too much food for one person. The three of us could have shared this and ordered no other appetizer. Wife had a filet mignon with Bearnaise on the side. Tron had a porterhouse special that was dry ancho chili rubbed with a chimichurri sauce atop. The chimichurri sauce was thick and looked like a very smooth guacamole. He was so so about the sauce. I had the Porcini Delmonico. Delmonico cut with what the menu describes as a "delicate porcini mushroom crust with a light drizzling of premium 12-year aged balsamic". I really couldn't detect the porcini mushroom crust at all. First few bites tasted very over salted. I enjoyed but probably wouldn't order it again. Our sides were the creamed corn with bacon and the truffle fries. Both were just good and not extraordinary. We ordered cheesecake and chocolate hazelnut cake for dessert. Three of us were very full but wanted to taste and bring home leftovers. Waitress brought out an order of creme brulee as a birthday present. I liked the cheesecake the most. Wife thought the chocolate hazelnut cake was a bit dry. I love the free valet service here. Mall parking can be difficult. Also, they have some nice looking outdoor seating. I wish they would uphold a bit of a dress code. Capital Grille is on the expensive side and the interior is sharp looking. I live in River Edge, NJ and up until now I have been a die-hard fan of the local Morton's steakhouse In the Riverside Mall when it comes to local steakhouses. However with the new construction of this capital Grille location in the Garden State Plaza they now have some stiff competition! To me, a steakhouse is all about the quality of the steak; I can deal with minor issues with decor or even the service.. But in the end it's all about the meal! This Capital Grille does not disappoint. My filet mignon was excellent, cooked perfectly, with no sign of discrepancies in texture throughout the entire cut. My lobster bisque soup was also excellent. Capital Grille and Morton's are both chain steakhouses, however in my travels (I routinely travel to many cities in the northeast for work) I have noticed that some locations are definitely better than others with both food and in with their service. This Capital Grille location Is one of the best I have eaten at. Now I have two, local, high-end chain steakhouses to choose from! read more

I was very unimpressed with the food here. Tried the sirloin steak and the lobster mac and cheese. For a $45 steak, I expected it to be melt-in-your mouth and super flavorful. There wasn't that much flavor, it was a bit tough to chew, and a bit dry. The dish also did not come with any sides. The lobster was very dry. The mac and cheese was greasy and hardly cheesy. As well as VERY salty. Didn't even finish half the dish. Service was very good - very attentive. However, the waiter struggled for a good 5 minutes trying to open our half bottle of wine - while standing next to us the entire time. Service: Today, I had this waiter who looked exactly like Rampage the UFC Fighter. First impressions are very important to me at restaurants and he wasn't friendly or informative. He was basically a robot with no smile just serving at a restaurant doing the most minimal talking and delivering our food with a gangster stare like he was pissed at something and having a bad day. Also, he never checked up on us after any of the food came out. This is a basic that all waiters should be able to accomplish while they work their shift. It just felt like he did not care working there at all. One more thing, he kept interrupting our meal every time because he did not know who ordered what. Food: Surprisingly the best selection of the night was lobster mac and cheese. It was almost perfect except for the fact that it was on the salty side. I also ordered calamari which was also an excellent selection, loved the spicy kick too it. Lobster crab cake was an alright choice, kinda small portion but expected. My main course was the filet mignon which was super salty! Lot of their food seem to be on the saltier side. I could not eat it and did not want to wait forever for another one to come out so the manager came by and took it off our check which was appreciated. I also had some pieces of my companion's Bone-In Kona Crusted Dry Aged Sirloin which was good but not super amazed. Finally, I was disappointed with dessert. My favorite dessert of all time is creme brulee. The one they served was super cold and just not that great. Although, I had more dislikes, I may try it out once more sometime in the future or check out the bar area as it is in my neighborhood to eat that lobster mac and cheese again. We didn't have a reservation, but it was a Tuesday evening so we tried our luck. Was told there would be a 30 minute wait. We really weren't that hungry at the time and we got off the Parkway thinking it's dinner time, so we waited. All three ladies at the front were friendly and courteous. Twenty-five minutes passed and one of the ladies told us it will be a few more minutes, but as soon as she leaves, another lady came to say our table was ready. Good enough. First time at this place; it's loud and not very well lit. From the outside with the valet I thought we may have been under-dressed. We weren't. The ladies at the front took care of us with a large booth, even though we were only two and the place was packed. I had a sweet corn soup and a simple Caesar Salad, then the bone-in Ribeye, all cooked to perfection. When I wanted "pink throughout", it was just that. I cannot stand "medium' and half the steak is well with the exception that it is "medium" only on the inside. Our server, George, very friendly and always looking to answer any questions, just an overall positive experience. It is a bit pricey for a quick bite and casual dining. We did have a half-bottle of wine, but the tab at the end of the evening was close to three bills with the tip. You know what? Totally worth it. The only bad thing I can mention is that the restaurant is located outside a mall. Getting to and parking can be frustrating. But for the level of excellence in service and the food? I guess they did the best they could to sort of distance themselves from the mall by (thankfully) not offering an entrance directly from the mall. And the place does look upscale. They have a decent wine stock behind a glass cage and right at the entrance they have wine lockers. I have been here a couple of times and the steak was always good. I usually have the porterhouse and a side of the wonderful lobster mac n cheese. The staff is always professional and friendly. They provide the type of service expected for paying the price you pay when you eat here. Even though you are at the mall, you almost for get it when you are in there. Went into the bar around 8:30 in the evening since I was traveling on business alone. I sat at the end of the bar which was just about full. Took about 5 minutes before I was greeted which was very strange since there were two female bartenders on duty. They were not overly busy at all. I asked for a menu which was finally delivered to me and asked for a glass of ice water. I then sat there for another 15 minutes before the bartender finally asked me if I was ready to order. This was after I waited 5 minutes to even be acknowledged in the first place. Why? I had the menus down and pushed aside, clearly ready to order. Tried making eye contact with them on many occasions. One of them was busy eating crackers or some kind of food behind the bar Neither of these bartenders were able to read the patrons at the bar. In a restaurant like the Capital Grille, I refused to flag them down or wave in a bar that was not even crowded. It was half empty and almost 8:50 at this point. As for the food, the salad was great. Fresh and well dressed with ingredients. Ordered a NY strip which was cooked perfectly but very chewy and did not seemed like it was aged very long or long enough to turn tender. Disappointing for a 48 dollar steak. The two half sides of mashed and creamed spinach were good. The final part of the meal consisted of me having to keep pushing my dirty plates to the front of the bar before they finally realized I was finished. I then had to wait yet again for a check back. Never offered dessert or coffee and at this point I finally flagged her down for the check. Placed my credit card in the check presenter and was not shocked when they kept walking by the bill and did not process until I had to flag them down again. Normally, I would be OK with service like this in an Outback or some other casual themed steakhouse. But when my check came to over $84 for one person it's unacceptable to be neglected and dampened the experience. It's not that the bartenders were unfriendly or anything but they were absolutely clueless at reading the bar and what the patrons needed. First review in a looooooooooong time! I'm torn about this place. I've dined here twice and the service has always been impeccable. I really love their mac and cheese, their mashed potatoes are super creamy and seasoned well, the brussel sprouts are a nice addition as well. My mom loved the calamari. The onion bread is fantastic. On to the main course - Two out of the two times, my medium rare steak came out medium to medium well. I've ordered the porterhouse and the ribeye and both came out overcooked. I hate to be a pain but if I am paying $50 for an entree, I expect it to come out perfectly the way I want it. I respectfully asked the waiter to take a look at my overdone steak and he happily agreed and provided his apologies for my overcooked steak and sent it back to the kitchen for a new one. I am really glad that CG's service was top notch in the way they handled the situation. However, that situation should have NEVER happened for a steakhouse. I think it's pretty bad that both times I've dined here, that I was served an overcooked steak. Nonetheless, there are some really good things about this restaurant but perhaps I should reconsider dining here again. I am not looking forward to a third overcooked steak. Two stars because there are some highlights that this restaurant does really well but a steakhouse screwing up the steak? Perhaps I should stick to just grilling my own steaks. read more

The Capital Grille in Boston and NYC gets 5 stars; but the one in Paramus I wouldn't even give one star too if I could. Overall, the food was slightly below average but the reason rated the restaurant so poorly is because of the soup. Every year a group of my friends go to Vermont. One year we bought Lobster Bisque and New England Clam Chowder from Restaurant Depot. Well most people didn't like the soup; too much cream. So you are probably wondering what does this have to do with the Capital Grille? Well the Lobster Bisque and the New England Clam Chowder from the Capital Grille tastes just like the soup purchase at Restaurant Depot. Of course they add little chunks of Lobster and Clams to it...but it the broth was identical. I actually went back to Restaurant Depot to repurchase their soup and compare the two side by side. I would never expect a store-bought soup from a high end steak house. read more

First the positives- the assortment of rolls are delicious, the lobster and crab cake appetizer was perfect, they have an incredible wine selection and their desserts are spectacular. However, I only got to find that out because they tried to bribe our table with 4 of them after messing up two out of the six main courses. My boyfriend and I each ordered our steaks medium rare but mine came out with a grey center and his came out bright red and actually still cold in some parts. We sent it back and mine was corrected with a fresh new steak but when they brought his out it was still rare, but at least edible. The sides were also a huge let down. The brussel sprouts were undercooked and under flavored and we could only find two specs of the smoked bacon it is described to have in it. The parmesan truffle fries only had the flavoring on the top layer and the cream spinach was almost soup like in texture. The worst part is that this food is so ridiculously overpriced, with the steaks being $45-50 each and the sides being $8-13 each. And it wasn't just us, we overheard the table next to us having similar issues with their meal. Even though we had a waiter and attendant, we still had to pour our own wine the entire evening and there were large gaps of time when we weren't checked on. They attempted to use some fine dining details such as crumbing the table and offering hot towels, but they were very haphazard about it, only cleaning the table at the very end instead of between each course and letting the towels drag on the dirty table as they handed them to you. For a place that prides themselves on steak and high class service, they certainly did not live up to their reputation last night. read more

Took my girlfriend on a date here over the weekend and we were really pleased with the food and atmospheres this restaurant had to offer. The staff were very polite and professional. We were well greeted and seated promptly, so off the start we had a great impression. The price was medium to pricey range, but I guarantee it's worth every penny. We had clam chowder and mini burgers with fries cooked in truffle oil as appetizers. For our entree we had he 8oz filet mignon. I got mine medium rare and it was AMAZING. Definitely one of the better steak restaurants, if not the best steak restaurant I've been to. Family friendly, great place to go on a date, totally recommend this place for a fancy night out or if you're looking for a comfortable meal in general. After dining in Paramus twice (both for work), this iteration of the chain meets expectations for food quality, falls short on ambience, and has better than average service. 3.5 stars, but I feel ungenerous today. Sorry, CG. The ambience issue is a big deal because part of the cost of that $50 steak is to make you feel like a baller. When I'm sitting in a glorified banquet room, I don't feel that way. Personally prefer river palm terrace for the rat pack vibe and great sushi menu or etc. for the modern twist on a steakhouse. If you end up here, steak tartare with truffled egg is magnifique. For a chain, Capital Grille more than surpassed my expectations. Everything about the meal was excellent. The steak was expertly cooked - right temperature (black and blue on the filet) which always seems to be difficult and seasoned well. I'm not a huge mac and cheese person but their version is totally worth the calories. The prosciuotto and mozzarella wrapped tomatoes were also quite tasty - served slightly warm with good balsamic so you have great sweet, salty and sour flavors. Why doesn't Capital Grille get 5 stars? The meal was good but it wasn't mind blowing. The service was attentive and but it wasn't over the top either. None of the dishes on the menu were particularly innovative, but then again it is a steakhouse.
