The Chanticleer is outstanding all around! We thoroughly enjoyed a summer lunch/early dinner in the garden. The atmosphere among the perennial flowerbeds and climbing roses can't be surpassed. One of my favorite charming neighborhood places on the Island. I live in Sconset on the weekends during the summer and this is one of my go to staples. I usually sit in the grill room as I find it more casual than the formal dinning room and outside in the courtyard. I always go for dinner and it's great because it is always easy to get a reservation for 5-6 (we usually sit in the table in the back left corner), perfect for a family dinner or dinner with close friends. Latley I have been getting the "special" tuna tartar and swordfish. They are both exceptionally delicious and are presented perfectly. A few of their staples include the bolognese, the burger and the Maine Lobster in Marie Rose Cocktail Sauce. For drinks, I am always drawn to their range of napa chardonnays. Not usually a fan but they have a great full bodied one that I am forgetting the name of. All around a great neighborhood place that is easy to get a reservation and great to go with a group. Service is excellent and the atmosphere is so cute. If you want a quintessential Nantucket restaurant this is the place. read more

What a great spot for another boozy afternoon in the summer. Sitting along the perimeter of the garden on a nice shaded patio with trellises intertwined with roses sipping on a.....rose. Somehow it feels so.......French. The garden is a beautiful setting for lunch and the service and food more than complement the entire experience. I can't really say it was overpriced for everything involved. Sometimes you need to spend a bit extra to escape. The wood paneled front room inside the restaurant looked prime for a dark little dinner one night with the wife and a great burgundy or just a great burgundy. A walk around town after lunch and another glass of rose at the Summer House just topped off the afternoon. Life doesn't get any better. (The owner sold the restaurant a few years ago and opened a place on Islamorada in the Florida Keys which has since, unfortunately, closed.) read more

I made a reservation on September 15 for our 28th anniversary on October 10. When asked if my reservation was for any special occasion I indicated that it was for our anniversary and requested a table in the dining room with a view if possible. We arrived on time and were given a table near the service area and the swinging kitchen door. When I requested to be moved to one of the empty tables for 2 near the windows I was told that they were reserved. Our only option was to move to a large round table in the middle of the dining room. The 2 hostesses at the front desk on the evening of October 10th were snippy and rude. The 2 tables for 2 people by the windows sat empty until about 5 minutes before we finished our meal. I will not return and will let anyone know who asks that the resturant service in terrible. :( read more

We have been coming to Nantucket for years but never had the opportunity to have dinner at Chanticleer until now. The atmosphere is charming and quaint. Seating indoors or out the ambiance is lovely. The service was impeccable from the minute we checked in with very attentive staff ensuring all our needs were being met! And the meal... simply fabulous! Ahi Tuna Tartar, Organic Mesclun Spring Mix to start with Halibut a la Provençal and Organic Salmonfor the Main dishes. First class, fine dining all the way! Gentlemen are required to wear a suit jacket however some were not, which seems a shame in my opinion. read more

Top notch nantucket dining at it's best. If it's nice out, definitely opt for garden seating. The halibut was out of this world good. Some other reviews mentioned it was pricey, even for Nantucket, I didn't find that to be true. I thought the pricing was in line with all the other nicer places on the island, but the food was above and beyond everywhere else. The whole menu looked great, but I'm not sure I could pass up the halibut on my next visit. read more

I am very sad to write this review, because I have enjoyed this restaurant throughout my life and it has been a Nantucket institution. I called the restaurant to make a reservation and purchase a gift card for my friends who would be honeymooning in Nantucket. My card was charged. Three weeks later, I am horrified to find out that although my friends had a reservation, there was no gift card put towards the purchase. Imagine my embarrassment to direct my friends there, have them order as if someone were paying for them on their honeymoon, and then have to stress about paying the bill themselves! I would not have even known this happened if they hadn't told me, sheepishly. I tried calling the restaurant that evening, to no avail. A few days later, someone called me back, appropriately apologetic, and said they would be refunding my gift and they wanted to send them a note. I gave the restaurant my friend's address for them to do so. What the restaurant ended up doing is not to refund my money, but instead to refund my friend a portion of their dinner. The intention and experience of the gift was totally ruined, and instead of a refund as they said they would provide, I had to pay for it anyway. So basically the restaurant did nothing to ameliorate an extremely unfortunate and embarrassing situation. I wrote them to explain this was not appropriate, with no response. This is not how hospitality at this echelon and price point should function. read more

We went for a special occasion and were looking forward to our evening. The ambiance was beautiful and that is where it ended. The waiter took 1 hour to take our orders and the dinner went downhill from there. My wine was served spoiled and discolored and the waiter became combative and defensive when shown until he finally took it back, only to realize it had gone bad. After a 2 hr wait for the food, three of the 4 dinners were bad. The shrimp was about the saltiest dish anyone had eaten. The Angus steak and vegetables were either tasteless or terrible and had a consistency that made the whole thing inedible. The halibut was good which is why we have given this 2 stars instead of 1. We had brought a birthday cake to the restaurant and after such a terrible meal and experience we asked for the cake and left; which the staff had handled carelessly, damaging the cake. Ultimately, the restaurant took the shrimp and steak off the check but we would have much rather not gone home hungry as two people didn't eat at all. We have dined at the Chanticleer earlier in the summer and the food was good which is why we returned. Last night was so awful that we will not be returning. If management had attended to either the long wait for the food, the uncomfortable service, the spoiled wine, or the bad food it would have gone a little ways towards showing that they cared about their clients, but they did not! read more

My husband takes me here for lunch as a treat while he's working in this area. I absolutely love the food!! So fresh, healthy, delicious and very large portions. My favorites are the fried green tomatoes, the chicken salad and soup. And as a treat you MUST try the home-made white chocolate chip cookies!!! The service is excellent. The food was great the waiters were great but when we walked in we were in beach cloths and other people were dressed nice and we asked to sit in the front. They then said they had reservations and directed us to the back even though we saw multiple open tables outside on the way in and the way out. The lobster & mango "salad " was like a brick of pummeled tough lobster & microscopic mango. Heavy enough to be a full course. Our main courses arrived barely warm & needed to be sent back. Our waiter was a boorish clown. I ordered two glasses of wine. Instead of removing the first glass when it was empty he poured it into the second glass. Not only did he pour tap water into our sparkling water, but when we informed him of that instead of apologizing or offering another bottle of sparkling water he said our glasses were empty & left. Oh man. I have to start this review off by saying I work at a restaurant and know the stresses that come with serving customers, especially wealthy people like those in Nantucket. I'm not picky about the service I receive and don't complain much but the service here was HORRIBLE. There were about 20 of us so I expected them to be overwhelmed but jeez. My mother doesn't eat meat and when she asked the server if it was possible to get something meatless the server replied with a stern NO. And that was it. Eventually my mom was told they'd ask the cook. My aunt was in charge of this party and wanted to say something to the person at the restaurant that booked our party. She was told by the manager like a smart ass that "no, she doesn't work here 24-7"... At the beginning of dinner when the drinks were coming out, one of the guys at the end thought a runner was taking his drink to the wrong person. Like many other people do, he said "oh I think that's mine". Mean server was right there, looked at him in the face and said (almost like a kindergarten teaching scolding a young kid) "sir, I have this side of the table. I will get your gin and tonic". All of us felt like we were being inconvenient to them, and that's not how I want to feel when I'm paying good money at a restaurant like this. Other than that, compliments to the chef, but server and manager, try smiling instead of having that stick up your asses. read more

We just attended a rehearsal dinner at The Chanticleer. The food was out of this world! I had salmon and my husband had chicken. Both were cooked to perfection. All of the dishes were presented beautifully. The dessert might be the best thing I've ever tasted. Raspberry puree over homemade ice cream and chocolate mousse with a sugar coated flower on top. To-die-for! The service was also 5-star. Our waiter, Kevin, was on point. Our glasses were never empty and he knew what we were going to ask for before we had a chance to ask. Solid environment highlighted by the gardens. This restaurant is perhaps best suited for ladies lunches or some other fluffy nonsense. We ordered a bottle of Rose which was fine. The tuna tartar and carrot& fennel soup were tasty and are probably worth a 3.5-4 star rating. My major complaint was the Chinese chicken salad. This salad is $24 and is a complete joke. We were presented with the salad and I was taken back by its size. The" salad" could fit into one of my hands (yes I have huge hands as I'm a large man but still ridiculous for $24 salad). The salad consisted of what I believe to be old (2-4 days aged, I knew this due to its musty nature) roasted chicken thigh meat, the equivalent of 1 whole chopped carrot, half a leaf of radicchio and some fried wontons. We decided to eat it and not complain as complaints are just straight up awkward. The dressing was mayo with a dash of sesame paste and THAT WAS IT. I could have made this exact salad while drunk, high and blind all with 3-4 day old ingredients from around my kitchen. Ate half of this hoax of a dish while grimacing in 6-7 bites like a solider. First the food was boring at best. But more importantly we were apparently scammed. We used a gift card wedding present which we gave to the waiter along with our AMEX card for the difference. He came back minutes later saying the gift card didn't work so we would have to pay it all on our Amex card which we did and left a tip on the card. Are you ready for this. We checked the gift card company and said the gift card was charged $62.60 on our gift card this the restaurant padded the tip for more than I left. It was Saturday, we spoke to management Sunday, for which they claimed a mistake and would credit my card immediately. It is now Wednesday and we have $6 from the tip they padded but nothing from rhe $62.60. It is Wednesday night--nothing. We have not been able to reach mgt, have failed so far. We will try again tomorrow then final a police complaint. This is outrageous. Reflecting on the food quality, the soup was ok then it was down hill. The entries just kind of lacked any depth of favor. We are on our honeymoon--wasn't a good start. Thanks. read more

Great ambiance at this quintessential Sconset establishment. Food preparation, creativity, and presentation good to very good (wife's halibut overcooked). My pasta special was excellent. Solid wine list with an excellent sommelier. Very odd sub-par service though for an establishment with its vaunted reputation. Perhaps 5 different wait staff tended to our party of 4, slow taking orders, wine sat in ice bucket while our glasses were empty several times and for 5-10 minutes per wait. Finally, asked to leave the bottle at the table. Did talk to owner at end who was thankful, but $600 later with poor service...we're not rushing back. read more

We have been trying as many places as possible on Nantucket and we had to try this one. The entranceway from the quiet street is really beautiful. You walk thru a nice garden with tables on both sides of you. Nice area to sit outside yet still be protected from the elements due to the overhang from the building. But I don't know if I would want to sit there since everyone coming and going walks by you. Once inside we sat in the back next to the gardens but still inside. Very nice feel in the place but we did notice the current clientel was more on the retired side and we had our three kids with us. All was good and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The menu is some what limited, but has something for everyone. Even my youngest, 9 years old, spotted the Bartlett Tomatoes and Mozzarella for her first course and the Pasta with Lamb as her main. We sampled the Tuna Tartar, Lobster Cocktail, Pate', and the Goat Cheese Salad. All were nice and fresh and full of flavor, but not a knock out considering the prices. Main courses we hit the steak with frites which was very good and the winning dish at the table with the Striped Bass with Lobster almost a tie. The main courses here are really great and they give you nice portions. For dessert, the cheese cake and lava cakes were the hit and everyone made sure the plates went back empty! Overall, fantastic place that was warm and fun. Service was top notch, everyone was friendly. Nice wine menu with some great old vintages if you are out to celebrate and splurge. read more

Just had lunch with my family at Chanticleer. All I can say is stay away. I have come here for over 20 years and the place has been in a steep decline the past 5 years. Many of the menu items seem they are made by Cysco, the food delivery and catering service. Nothing appears to be made in house any longer. What a shame. The charming historic building, the renovation and it's lovely setting is the star here. Food is high end and good quality but wouldn't rate it above The Pearl, for example. We asked for help with wine recommendations and our waiter was clueless. Sommelier doesn't work on Mondays I suppose. We took a lucky guess and it worked out which is great since it cost over $100. The food was busy. My entree of grilled striped bass had lobster sauce with corn, lima beans and you name it. Plus the fish was topped with pesto. Why so many flavors? Hub's chicken was Moroccan spiced with a medley of veggies and fig. Kinda an odd medley. The beet, watermelon and raspberry salad was good but also confusing. There were little chocolate bits in there. Pot creme delicious. The Chanticleer is trying but it realizes that folks are hanging out in town more and not making the trek to Sconset as often. read more

What an exquisite dining experience!! 4 of us came here on a friends recommendation and were told we would love it... And we truly did! The setting was gorgeous... Reminded me of a French farmhouse and you have the option to sit outside or in. The ambience is beyond beautiful & romantic. You honestly can't go wrong either way. My husband said that it was the best steak of his life. The service was impeccable, as was the fresh farm to table cuisine. What a foodie treat!! I even left a cashmere wrap behind and the owner was nice enough to mail it to me. I about fell off my chair... Couldn't believe how nice of her that was! We can't wait to go back. Servers and hostess were very friendly. There are kids menu options but just not printed out. We were offered either butter pasta and chicken fingers. Yes it's typical but come on. Most kids don't have posh palette, while mine love sushi and salads, pasta is like a dessert to them. The portion was also very generous. The patty melt was gooey and yummy and the lobster open sandwich was great. Docking one star because my daughter found beignets to be a little flavorless. My husband and I stopped in for lunch after an exhausting bike ride from Town, the server Norberto was very gracious and we freshened up before lunch. We started with some gorgeous oysters, like the sea with horseradish, very tasty.The burger was served with a beautiful perfectly cooked egg on top, my husband enjoyed it throughly. I had the light Frittata with brie & mushrooms and mixed greens. Our drinks were beer & Arnold Palmers, service was attentive & friendly. This restaurant, close to the water in the small town of Siasconcet has a charming environment, one more appealing than it's very overpriced menu. We had a raw tuna poke appetizer (which I believe made me really sick the next day), followed by fresh pasta with short rib meat. It essentially was an over-proced version of spaghetti & meatballs. We opted to dine both nites in the casual dining room that has sweet blue and white check tableclothes, vintage wicker chairs and dark wall paneling. Cozy and vintage. Food and service were excellent! Fish and salads primarily. Outdoor space is so cute. A carousel horse among huge gardens and climbing roses and seating covered from the sun. So special! Waiter poured the remains of first glass of wine into the second glass of wine. Sauces and sides were lukewarm or room temperature. Who serves lukewarm or room temperature food? Waiter poured tap water into our sparking water, then insisted that glasses had been empty. Lobster in starter salad was tough as shoe leather. Manager was incredulous. Fish was nicely prepared, although set on base of cold starch and veggies. Worst restaurant experience we've had in decades. Enough said. (Only saving grace was that our meal was comped.) read more

I am very disturbed and feel that the owner/manager of the Chanticleer restaurant should be aware that my my elderly father and mother were harassed and insulted at the Chanticleer yesterday. They had finished a "lovely lunch" in their own words, when they got the bill. There was a discrepancy in the bill. They had been overcharged for their entree. My father brought it to the attention of the waiter, who went to try to change it, and the host/manager, who was wearing a turquoise shirt. He was told that the computer had made the mistake, but in a very rude fashion, without apology-(at the very least). My father stated that in his business, when he made a mistake, he always paid for it, not the customer. He then stated he would not be leaving a tip, so that his waiter would not be surprised when he discovered none.And then signed the charge. At that point, the man in the turquoise shirt, who was at a podium in front of the restaurant raised his voice to my elderly, overcharged and in the right father and mother (who by the way, aside from eating at the Chanticleer many times this summer have frequented your establishment for over 44 years- since well before my birth) and said to them- instead of apologizing, "GET OUT, we don't need your KIND here, and don't come back!" My father then asked the name of of the man in the turquoise shirt. No response. He asked 3 times. Neither the bus boy, or their waiter, David, or the man in the turquoise shirt would reply. I am angry, disgusted and horrified at all of this. This is no way to treat paying customers, the elderly, or people in general, period! It is outrageous and aside from being ashamed at how this was handled- if it was my business I would apologize to the offended party and reprimand if not fire my staff.
