Coffee Mug Restaurant has been dishing out amazing food for Elko, Nevada citizens, and all those who appreciate "All American" cuisine since 1987, and has earned the love, trust and respect of the greater Elko community. This iconic restaurant is a unique gem, located in Elko, and has been family owned and operated since they opened their friendly doors. Did I mention they have delicious "Americana" cuisine? In these days of COVID-19, "social distancing" is in place, even in Elko, as the tables have been dispersed, and the breakfast counter only offers "every-other" seating. The staff are forced, by state law, to wear masks, but I didn't see a mask on any of the diners, and I certainly didn't wear a mask. As you enter the restaurant, you'll note the spacious and comfortable dining room, and you'll be greeted by the friendly staff. Since I was dining alone, I chose to sit at the counter. I sat at the breakfast counter, and I was able to watch the friendly staff pick up breakfast orders from the talented chef. Orders are placed on the "window to the kitchen," placed on the counter, and then are delivered to diners. The staff has talent, as I can never figure out who's order belongs to "who," but the friendly staff seems to have solved this equation. From the "Breakfast Favorites" section of the breakfast menu, I ordered the "Chorizo Skillet." How could I resist ordering such a delicacy for an amazing breakfast? The menu describes the breakfast as, "Basque chorizo and cheese, served over diced potatoes, and two eggs. Choice of pancakes or toast." Although the menu doesn't list it, when I asked my friendly server is biscuits and gravy could be substituted rather than toast or pancake, she enthusiastically replied "Yes! No problem." Count me in... Oh... I describe my breakfast as "delicious!" Basque chorizo differs significantly from Mexican chorizo - Mexican chorizo is actually based on Spanish chorizo - in that it's much drier, and lacks much of the spice that is common with the Mexican variety. All things "Basque" are very popular in eastern California, central/north Nevada, and southwestern Idaho, and Coffee Mug Restaurant sits nearly in the center of "Basque Country," so "basque" rules the breakfast table. I'm not sure how to describe the chorizo, except that it was delicious, mildly spicy, and there was plenty of it! The chorizo sits on top of fried, home-style potatoes, perfectly deep fried to a golden brown, and are golden and crispy on the outside, and tender and white inside. The potatoes and sausage are topped with grated and melted Cheddar and white cheese - no skimping on portions at Coffee Mug Restaurant - and the whole skillet it topped with two fried eggs, of your choice. I'm a fan of eggs over easy, and my breakfast was topped with two perfectly fried eggs, over easy, exactly as I'd ordered. I opted for a side of biscuits and gravy, and yes, that was BISCUITS and gravy! My side included two perfectly cooked, in-house, scratch-made biscuits, along with a side of mouth-watering sausage gravy, which made the perfect side dish to this amazing breakfast. The benchmark of an outstanding breakfast chef is eggs... specifically when you order your eggs fried "over easy," which is my de facto standard. The two eggs that topped my breakfast were fried to perfection, and made for a perfect summit to my "Mount Everest" of breakfast! The chorizo was delicious, chewy, and the potatoes were deep fried to a golden brown. With the side of biscuits and gravy, I enjoyed a perfect breakfast at Coffee Mug Restaurant, located in Elko, Nevada. I'm a great "eater," but this breakfast was so massive, I couldn't eat it all. So, along with my check, I asked my friendly server for a "box," and I enjoyed the remainder of my meal for breakfast, the following day. I'm up here with my husband for work. Got in to town a few hours ago and started searching for places to eat. I did have another restaurant in mind but decided last minute to eat here. First off let me say this is a small, quiet, and cute town. We walked in and was greeted by a few people. Our waiter was nice a friendly. My husband went with the ribeye, and I went with the chicken fried steak. His steak had a good flavor but was over cooked. He asked for Med, and it was cooked well. The chicken fried steak was thin, it looked more like a frozen patty, but it did have a decent flavor. The mash potatoes and gravy had a good flavor, and the veggies that came with both meals was surprisingly good. The biscuit or bread that was suppose to come with the meal we never got. All though our waiter said as soon as they come out of the oven he would bring them to us. I also want to mention you get a salad or soup with your meals. We both got salads and the thousand island dressing was the best I've ever had. read more

This a great restaurant. They make great milk shakes! Good down home American diner food at fair prices. Service was efficient and pleasant. My only complaint are the bathrooms. They seem newly remodeled but they do not have handicap rails next to one of the to the toilets in the ladies room and the toilet was low. (Not "comfort height" 16 1/2 "). This place lives up to the hype of the best place in Elko. We were driving thru looking for a great breakfast spot and found it at The Coffee Mug. Carne Asada and eggs were perfectly cooked with generous portions. The hash browns were homemade and crispy as ordered. My husband had the country fried steak and eggs which were also cooked as ordered. And we topped off all of that protein with nice fluffy pancakes. I work down the street and I go here sometimes for lunch. It's been perfectly fine the many other times I've gone, but today was less than ideal. I left work immediately on my break so I'd have time to eat. I order my food and sit down on the bench by the door to wait, i think I sat there almost 30 minutes on my half-hour break. The waitress had completely forgotten about my food. I had to walk back, clock in, and ask my boss for another break to go get my food and she had just completely forgotten about it. I went to brunch with my family at 11:30 am on Monday. The hostess Monica was very snotty. We are a hispanic family and I felt racism towards us. Monica had an unhappy face and did not greet us. She spilled water on our table and tossed the drinks and straws at us, she did not apologize. My dad's card wasn't able to swipe and she had to put in the numbers and tossed the card back at him and told him to get a new card. This was very upsetting because I have been a costumer at Coffee Mug since 2015 and attend the restaurant at least 5 times a month. I have never had such bad service towards my family and I. I don't know why Coffee Mug would have a hostess like Monica attending my family. We will never return. read more

Bottom line, best chicken fried steak in Northeastern Nevada, including Reno. It has been a long time since I had chicken fried steak that came even close to my wife's, but the Mug has done it. I'm in Elko twice a month and this is without a doubt better than Dreez. You can get a Bloody Mary at Dreez though, but the food isn't even close to the Coffee Mug in my opinion. Very bland tasted like butter noodles so in the effort to leave a helpful review I have attached a very simple (but delicious Mac and cheese recipe) * 1 (8 ounce) box elbow macaroni * ¼ cup butter * ¼ cup all-purpose flour * 1/2 teaspoon salt * ground black pepper to taste * 2 cups milk * 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook elbow macaroni in the boiling water, stirring occasionally until cooked through but firm to the bite, 8 minutes. At the same time, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add flour, salt, and pepper and stir until smooth, about 5 minutes. Pour in milk slowly, while stirring continuously. Continue to cook and stir until mixture is smooth and bubbling, about 5 minutes, making sure the milk doesn't burn.Step 3 Add Cheddar cheese and stir until melted, 2 to 4 minutes. Step 4 Drain macaroni and fold into cheese sauce until coated. read more

Food was ok, service was SLOW. No refills on drinks.  I had the Grilled Chicken Salad, Chicken was dry.  We also had the French dip, which was good but told it came with Swiss cheese and it didn't. Couldn't get the waitresses attention to get it corrected. The fries were not fully cooked but grease soaked. At one point we stopped eating and just sat there hoping someone, anyone would stop to see if everything is ok.... NOPE! NO refills on drinks!  Bathrooms clean. Hostess acted as though she could careless about anything, walked slow, wasn't friendly and talked us out of buying a brownie, stating " yeah, they're expensive" They have good reviews, that's why we stopped here...maybe because we were traveling through and not regulars??? read more

I have to say I only ate here because my friend wanted to. I had eaten at the old location 8 years ago and it was terrible. But he was having a hard time and I wanted to be nice. I could not complain about the service. Our waitress was awesome. The menu was better than I remembered and since I have an egg allergy and some other dietary issues I was happy to be readily able to order without much accommodation. The hot chocolate was the kind of sticky divine, syrupy, drippy, whipped cream concoction I love at diners. Sadly, the food was just off. Everything was dry and or burnt tasting. I don't put that on the wait staff. I probably won't recoil in horror if that's where people want to go, but I will likely never jump up go their. It's unfortunate because it could be a great diner. Great service! The drinks were tasty and the breakfast burritos were wonderful. Generally, sausage burritos can be very greasy, but these were filled with fluffy potatoes and just the right amount of cheese and non-greasy sausage. They were nice and warm - just right for a chilly morning. The interior was very relaxing, too. Short stack of hot cakes: My hot cakes were fluffy, crisp and slathered in butter. I asked for another syrup option (I'm not a fan of maple). The waitress brought out some homemade strawberry syrup that made my taste buds jump with joy! Biscuits and gravy: The gravy was made from scratch with some sort of sausage in it.
