What a gem!!! The view was spectacular and the food was delicious. Well worth the wait. We went on MLK day for brunch and waited about 20-30 minutes. There were 3 parties ahead of us and they use a check in system that will text you when your table is ready. We spent a long time there but the view was so amazing that it didn't matter how long the service was. There was 1 waiter for the back section where we were seated but I also think we got one of the best two tables in the house. Why wouldn't you love it? - relaxing view, good coffee & good food. Parking is challenging so prepare having some headache. Best breakfast we had on the island. It's literally at a wide spot in the road - and not very wide at that. The view is amazing while you wait for your table (yes, you'll probably wait). If you're lucky enough for a patio table it's a great view from there too with a nice breeze. The service was efficient and friendly. The coffee was good but not amazing. Our table had eggs, bacon, Portuguese sausage, breakfast potatoes, the onion dill bread toast (great flavors), cranberry macadamia nut scone and French toast. Aside from the coffee the only thing I'd say was just good were the eggs. Everything else was outstanding. We drove an hour to get here and would do it again. read more

Great for breakfast! This is just another 5 star rating highlighting the great food with killer view of the bay. The prices are affordable and the service is good. I had the special of the day which was a wrap with smoked Kailua pork, cheese, eggs, beans, sour cream, and some more stuff. The mango salsa that accompanied was delicious. You really taste the Aloha in the food here. Kinda cool that the local Geckos will come hang out at your table. One of the most amazing views, with lots of fresh air both on the patio and in the little room in the back. The view is, as others have noted, spectacular. Their sandwich breads are excellent - thick cut but easy to bite into without overpowering or squishing the sandwich contents. The luau bread was more subtle than I expected - I'm guessing the French toast with it would be excellent. The cubanos on rye were generously portioned, and well-balanced. The fish on their Ono sandwich was delicate. The corn chowder had lots of good vegetable flavor, and had good substance without being too creamy. Coffees were very good; the cappuccino was bold without being bitter. We went on a Monday afternoon, so I think we avoided the chaotic rush of some of the morning reviews. There was a brief mixup in our to-go dessert orders at the end, but they resolved it quickly and kindly. Just check the boxes they give you as with any other place before ya leave. VIEWS FOR DAYS, the papaya special only $15 i would've paid $30! Coconut, pineapple warm bread, eggs and a papaya parfait WOW 12/10 will be dreaming about it when i go home. Found this little gem when I was checking out cool places around the area. FYI, This review is only about their coffee and ambiance. It's located on the side of the Hawaii Belt Rd/Mamalahoa Hwy in Captain Cook. There's a few parking stalls in front of the restaurant but if it's bustling with customers, parking may be difficult. I got their flavored latte with the choice of half hazelnut syrup and half macadamia nut syrup. It came in a 22oz cup which was HUGE for a coffee (Starbucks venti size maybe?), but it was kind of on the pricier side (little over $6). But my drink was amazing. It was VERY strong mixed with my syrup choices which I loved. My friends and I went right when they were about to close, so I definitely could not finish that cup of coffee that night. But it helped with the drive back to Hilo. LOL. The dine in option for this shop is absolutely GORGEOUS especially during sunsets. The eating area is "outdoor" with a roof over but opened for customers to view the landscape facing the ocean. When my friends and I came, we were stunned by the beauty of the sunset and scenery (peep at my short video). This place is definitely worth a dine in near sunset! Definitely recommend the coffee and dining in this little shop specially if you want a "romantic atmosphere". read more

A friend introduced me to the Coffee Shack near Captain Cook in HI. I didn't realize I was such a good friend to be invited and introduced to The Coffee Shack. Ill be honest, I drove past this place more times than I can remember. Man I wish I would have stopped sooner. The little restaurant is hanging over the hills of Captain Cook on the Mamalahoa Highway. We parked and went inside. We were shown to a table overlooking the hills and farms and the ocean. The view, ambiance and food (jumping ahead) were spectacular. I was so impressed that everything, including the bread was made in house. To start we ordered the soup, some sort of herb chicken with vegetables. It was thick, creamy, rich and flavorful!! The soup was amazing. We ordered two sandwiches and figured we'd split them so we'd be able to taste them both. I ordered the pastrami on French sour dough bread and my friend (good friend) ordered a french dip sandwich. The food arrived and the sandwiches were on thick homemade bread, a good layer of meat and whatever extras each sandwich came with. I tried both sandwiches, and it was a close call (not close at all) but the pastrami was my favorite pick. The pastrami was lean and flavorful. It came with Swiss cheese and Dijon mustard on your choice of bread. I couldn't wait to jump in, and boy did I. Lots of flavor and on that French bread, it was the bomb!!! My friend ordered the French Dip, which I thought was also amazing. Your choice of bread, and of course we picked the French Sourdough with roast beef, red onions and a side of the Au Jus. It was amazing, just not as good as the pastrami, in my opinion. We ordered a piece of lilikoi cheesecake for desert. WOW!! Rich and creamy and delicious. Best Breakfast anywhere on the island. We come here every year when we visit the island and it is always the best. There specials are excellent. My wife had the spinach and ham omelet and I had the Mediterranean omelet. Both were done to perfection. The freshly made luau bread choice has some little Mac nut and fruit pieces. If you don't try it, You will never forgive yourself. We bought extra slices to take home for later. The Lilikoi cheesecake is the best I have had anywhere. The view of the valley and Bay is phenomenal. The staff is great. We were delighted to say hello to Jeffery, our favorite server from last year. The only reason it's getting more than one star was the amazing view. The coffee was horrible. It was incredibly bitter, barely a step up from Starbucks. After I ordered, I went to sit down and was promptly kicked out of my seat because it was reserved for breakfast (no signs or anything mentioning this and there were many empty tables, got there right when they opened). This wouldn't have been a problem but it was followed by the employee saying, "You can sit in the back I guess. It's empty." Incredibly rude. Overall, it was a bad experience. I love coffee, so when I heard this was a popular spot in the big island Hawaii I had to try it out. The parking is easy but is limited. Tourist and locals both love coming to this place.... Because of that, I had to wait to be seated for 45 minutes.. but it was worth it. The view is just amazing. Ventilation is nice at this cafe... it was a hot day but felt the cool breeze inside the cafe. The staff was friendly. The coffee was delicious and refreshing.
