Ok, so my mother told me their Lilikoi cheesecake was the best cheesecake she ever had. Now I make a pretty darn good one that everyone raves about so I had to try it while in Kona. Well, she was right! Seriously delicious. My husband said the same thing. Plus we had lunch there. Had the pastrami sandwich on homemade rye bread. So tender and flavorful. Others had salads which all were generous portions and wonderful. Service was a tad lacking but we could overlook due to how great everything else was. Now I'm on the hunt for a similar recipe to try to imitate the cheesecake. read more

During my two weeks in Hawaii I visited this place three times. Each time I had an excellent experience. The iced honey mocha latte was one of the best lattes I had while on the island. Didn't love this place. While the view was amazing and the geckos crawling everywhere were super cool, the food and service were lackluster. Neither the host nor the server embodied the Hawaiian hospitality that we had enjoyed on our trip, and I was extremely disappointed by my dry eggs, potatoes and toast. The saving grace was a super friendly server who had been working on the other side of the restaurant - he offered to take a picture of my boyfriend and I and opened up the lock to a gated patio to help us get the best view. Still, given all of the great food and views that Hawaii has to offer, I wouldn't recommend this place. Sorry! read more

The take-out lunch on the first visit was SOo good we came back a second time (and, yes, the addictive macadamia chocolate chip cookies were a Large part of that). Aloha! We are staying in south Kona and were trying to find a place for a morning coffee and, if possible, a light bite. We did a general area search and then again using the 'nearby' search; found this place about 15 minutes south of Kona in the Captain Cook area. Wow, was a pleasant surprise! They don't take reservations but the wait for 4 was only a few minutes, even though it was packed! When we first had a look at the menu we wondered if we had accidentally stumbled upon a hidden gem: did we ever!! Our first time was even surpassed by our second visit a few days later. I know some people like to talk about the intricacies of dishes eaten, but I am not enough of a gourmet to offer anything of substance. What I can say is that they use real food ingredients and is prepared properly. The meals we had, and looking at the plates delivered to tables within sight, were all attractive and appetizing. Everyone seemed quite relieved when I licked my plate so they could follow suit without embarrassment. All the staff we interacted with were polite, unhurried and eager to make sure that you were having the best meal possible. We are 4 crazy Canucks with all kinds of dietary needs that were handled so smoothly we were expecting a big foul-up. Nope, didn't happen. Kristen today (sorry about the phonetic spelling) was fantastic: not a single mistake in our order, kept an eye on us as we ate, and seemed to know exactly when to come by to take care of us before we even had a chance to let her know. She even kept my leftovers cold while we went up the road on a coffee tour. But it wasn't just her. Everyone we interacted with was so pleasant, it was really like going to a friend's place to eat. But I'm saving the best for last.... It is called the Coffee shack for a good reason. Their blend of coffee (which thank goodness they sell), has been the hands-down best 100% Kona coffee I have ever tasted. If you go there for the coffee alone, you will be pleasantly satisfied. If you enjoy something from the menu, you will be enjoying one of the best meals you will have on the island, and at a price that will surprise you. read more

One of my favorite places to eat in the Kona area. It's small and gets crowded quickly. However the breakfast options are really nice - you get to eat with the geckos and have a pretty cool view of the land and ocean. Get there early as there is always a brunch time wait. Such a lovely place with scenic views. The menu is very unique in its own way. I had veg gourmet pizza and slice of Luau bread. The pizza had a very very tasty focaccia-ish base. Wow, our first negative experience on the island!! Seams like these people dont give a damn about customers. Obviously because this is one of the few breakfast places available here. So its basically monopoly attitude you getting. We just wanted to have a breakfast at the area and found this place on yelp. We came, patiently waited in line that goes outside of the restaurant. Placed an order and went to the table at the patio. Then waiter approaches us asking to leave. We see 3 empty tables and people sitting and looking at the menus. We left outside if confusion. Waited again. I decided to go speak with waiter, because its impossible to reach the lady who took our order. So the waiter tells me that if you placed an order with that lady, that is TO GO order and you cant dine in. WHAT? How the hell we should know that? There are no sign, no info. Okay, I try to get to that lady, explaining that we had no idea about this weird rule. And we wanted to eat inside. With zero understanding or compassion, with poker face she tells me that SHE DOESNT TAKE DINE IN ORDERS. And if we ordered from her - its going to be ONLY TAKE OUT ORDER. No changes are possible. And the wait time for the table (with half empty patio) will be 1 hour 40 mins. "You said TO GO order". We never said that, we had no idea!! And you better put a sign or something. Feels like they are 2 different companies working in one spot. If you order there you cant get in If tourists are not welcomed here, just put a sign " We have some special ordering system, that only locals know , tourists stay away". So we got super upset and asked to cancel our order. No sorry, no nothing from that poker face lady. Ok you have that confusing system, well at least be friendly. We accidentally spilled out champagne bucket and left a huge puddle on the floor and not once did he ever seem upset about having to clean it up. My friends that live on the Big Island love the Coffee Shack, and we had breakfast here on our way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The main item I had was a special for the day which was an egg scramble with veggies. The scramble was cooked well and the veggies were packed in which I really appreciated. It had some cheese (more than I would have wanted), but it was very tasty and exactly what I needed for the long day ahead. I also had a side of potatoes, the luau toast, a side of bacon (obviously) and a double espresso. The potatoes were tasty (because when are potatoes NOT tasty), but were the least exciting part of the extras. The luau toast is made with fruits so it has a gentle fruity scent and a slightly sweet flavor (so slight that it would be perfect with afternoon tea.) This was my first time having this kind of toast, and I loved it. On the mainland, a side of bacon is 2-3 slices, but at the Coffee Shack, it's about 5-6 thick cut slices. I love this place JUST because of this because I had enough to share! The double espresso kicked me in the but in the most pleasant way and tasted good too! Along with the food, our server was super nice, and of course, there is an ocean view. If you're not seated by the back patio wall, go look over the edge at the garden there because it's gorgeous and worth it. We were seated on the the outside patio but there is inside seating as well. There is also parking out front right off the road. I would definitely come back to the Coffee Shack on my return to the Big Island. read more

The service was abysmal. We were a party of 2 and kindly moved when asked to a smaller table mid meal because they wanted to seat 6 people. Then when it came time to ask for our check our waiter was nowhere to be found. 10-15 minutes later we get our check. We had to wait another 10-15 minutes for the waitress to process my fathers credit card having almost been ignored by her for a 2nd time I had to get up out of my seat and track her down. I am open to being contacted by management or owner to discuss this further but I'm sure you don't need my business as this was a minor inconvenience on a trip of a lifetime for my elderly father. The latte was flavorful and my kids gave the hot chocolate a thumbs-up. The people are friendly and the service is top notch. Bad: the pizza is abysmal. The crust is so sad. We ordered 3 varieties and they all taste strongly of digiorno's frozen pizza. The chocolate chip macadamia nut cookie had so much potential but the texture was overdone and cake-y. And it was pricey. Overall, I'd skip it. It's way too expensive for the poor quality of food you get. You can see the same view from any number of scenic overlooks along the same road. read more

Fortuitous circumstances brought us to one of our favorite places to eat on the island! We just happened to stop into the Coffee Shack on our way back from snorkeling at Two Step Beach and what a gem we stumbled onto. We were originally just looking to grab some coffee, but when we saw there was full service breakfast with delicious pies we decided to sit down. The service was prompt and friendly with our server providing good recommendations. I went with the papaya boat which includes half a papaya, fresh fruit, lilikoi yogurt, and toasted coconut. It was delicious, light, and refreshing. My dad and husband both went for the breakfast burrito which was hearty and flavorful. No bland burrito blues here! Each of us got a slice of pie: coconut cream, chocolate cream, and likikoi cheesecake. Each was superb. I will say that the lilikoi cheesecake is very tart and rich and was too much for me to finish on my own so I recommend sharing it with someone. The only critique is that my mom's hot chocolate was bland and she wished she had opted for tea instead. read more

Amazing views, food and service. We heard about what a special place this is and the Coffee Shack didn't disappoint. We were here for Father's Day. We arrived right when it opened. They seated us immediately and did not rush us to order. We got a seat right at the front of the lanai with no obstructed views of the ocean. Not a bad place to eat a delicious meal. The portions are good sized. I had the tasty vegetable omelette which came with potatoes and toast. My husband ordered the Kona eggs with Portuguese sausage and toast. We also ordered half a papaya, specialty coffees and tropical mimosas. Everything was yummy. If you are ever in the Captain Cook area, the Coffee Shack is a must. read more
