This is a nice alternate space for preview screenings that is off the grid from the typical theaters where tv or movie screenings are held. Came here to see a free screening of an upcoming season of "Pretty Little Liars", and the co-sponsors Refinery29's team were very precise with the check-in process and super friendly. As soon as you walk-in they had sweets for us to choose from as well as warm buttery pop-corn and when we arrived at our seats a free t-shirt with the name of the show. We also had a surprise guest appearance by the two main actresses from the original show, Sasha Pierterse and Janel Parrish who spoke briefly on the upcoming season of the spin-off show. The auditorium provided for viewing of this show was very good with high quality sound system, to my surprise. The bathrooms are also very different from a typical movie-theater bathroom and had very nice paper towels to dry off those wet hands. Overall experience here was great! Look forward to visiting again for another premier. read more

I don't eat here that often, as it's a bit of a luxury but when I have time between screenings, I'll go over for a drink and some sides... the mac 'n' cheese is fantastic, as are the desserts, and the service is impeccable. I feel like this is one of the city's best kept secrets because they haven't decided to expand out into the sidewalk/street around the theater, instead expecting people to find it or know about it, and what great food it has. read more

Amazing food and service. Came up to the restaurant after seeing a move in the theater downstairs. We ate the steak frites, kale salad, and the ricotta. Ended the meal with the purple tres leche. So tasty! Didn't even know there was a restaurant upstairs. Such a hidden gem. The room had such a warm ambiance and all the serving staff was so lovely. Chatted with manager on a couple questions I had about the wine pairings and felt so well taken care of. Such an ideal date spot for both dinner and a movie! 10/10 read more

Wait staff, food, everything excellent, except there is a really weirdly placed plant that all the servers and bus staff had to duck and weave every time they came to our table. We felt so bad. Came here for dinner, no movie, but will probably come back eventually to do both. Overall this place has a very hip vibe to it, but not one that will make you feel uncomfortable if you are less ~trendy~ than the others who are dining. Our waitress was very sweet, wasn't overbearing, and we ordered/got our food/drinks in a very timely manner. The menu isn't huge, but I would say that there are options for most people depending on taste. I went with the chicken dish and my friend got the steak frites, and we were both happy with our meals! The chicken was a bit dry on the inside, but the sauce that covered the dish made up for that. The steak came with a hefty portion of frites which were definitely on the salty side but still delicious. We also shared a side of Mac n cheese for fun, but it was a bit under-salted....could have used some of the salt from the fries!!!! Would definitely recommend this place for a date (dinner and movie), or just for a more relaxed night out with friends. Hope to be back! read more

Me and the Kimster were donkeying around the lower lower east side, she had a work thing at The Forgetmenot and i had a haircut, we had walked very far and were famished. We popped into The Metrograph Commisary, inside the uber cool Metrograph theater, the newest coolest movie theater playing an eclectic playlist of film nightly and had an Aperol Spritzer (Kim) a Negroni (moi) and 2 of their toasts, an avocado toast with an egg and a whitefish salad toast I recall. Delicious, great smooth style that reflects the tastes of the fellows that brought this place to life. We need to do more here, try some other dishes, but we loved it we sat at the bar and had a great lunch. It was chic and charming, quaint and a little romantic if you wanted it to be, we left there very happy. I suggest a movie and a bite at The Metrograph once a week for the rest of your life. read more

Attractive venue, but is "hidden" inside the upstairs area. Would never have known about it if hadn't been invited by some friends. Food was good, entrees well priced. I had the burrata and the chicken and enjoyed both, the chicken had a sweet / tangy lemon caper sauce. The space was fun with some Art Deco designs and sofas nearby for drinks etc. Service was slightly disorganised especially at dessert time where our larger tables desserts got distributed randomly and people began eating other peoples desserts. We were planning to see a 9:15 movie so we decided to check out the restaurant first. We ordered the citrus salad, the Mac and cheese, and the chicken to share. Our waitress was amazing and so nice and she timed it perfectly to bring each course out on its own so that we would still make the movie!!! She really made sure we had a great dinner experience Yes the food is pricey but it was really good, (granted I was on an edible, but my bf wasn't and he enjoyed it just as much) and the experience of getting to eat and then just go down to your movie is def worth it in my opinion. The salad was fresh and unique, I've never had a salad like that before. It had pieces of really good fruit and salty pistachios and fresh green and all the flavors together were good. The mac and cheese doesn't look super crazy when it's brought out but it's REALLY GOOD. It's actually hard to find good Mac in the city that has enough FLAVOR but these guys killed it!! They make the pasta crispy in some spots and it's very cheesy and packed with flavor and the longer it sits the better it gets!! The chicken was super tender and juicy. You can tell these guys know how to cook a chicken!!! It was on a very yummy sauce with lil yummy potatoes. In the end I think the bill was around 65$ with the tip. It's a lot yea. But hey life is short and we wanted to eat before our movie!!! I probably wouldn't spend that much again but I wouldn't say it wasn't worth it and I wouldn't say it's not worth doing it once or twice if you have a movie coming after. Because this is the coolest part!!! Going downstairs to pick out your snacks before the movie!! Initially I was bummed that they didn't have "real movie theatre popcorn" or concessions but this is the coolest Concession stand I've ever seen. Their house made popcorn looks pretty basic but it's covered in olive oil and salt and it's literally better than typical movie theatre popcorn. DONT SKIP IT! They also have every candy you can imagine AND every flavor of pocky AND BIG POCKY AND BIG TWIZZLERS AND AN ENTIRE FROZEN SECTION WITH YES FROZEN CHOCOLATE, POCKY, M&Ms etc And tons of yummy drinks!! I mean I couldn't believe it. It's a candy and movie lovers heaven!! We got one popcorn, sour gummy bears, a water, and 2 boxes of frozen pocky for 25$. Again, it's a lot. But I love to experience life and to me that was worth it! (The privilege is real) Then for the reason you came!! The movie!! The theaters are intimate and cozy (you have to be quiet!) and the screens are big with great sound. Nothing like settling into a movie while your edible is kicking in hard eating pocky sticks two at a time ;) So overall, we spent around 120$ on a movie night for us both and dinner. I usually like coming here and the movies are great, but last night 3/2 at around 9pm I had a seat at the upstairs bar in the restaurant, and was given the worst service by the bartender. I believe his name was David z? He was extremely aggressive, rolled his eyes when I had a seat, and made me and the two women next to me uncomfortable. As a former bartender I understand how the job can be stressful, however taking it out on people at the bar is disrespectful, unprofessional, and left me with a bad feeling about the restaurant. I wish I could give the commissary a better review, but I can only give it a meh. The food was decent, but the portions were tiny, and the prices high. The service was s l o w, and when the servers were with us, they didn't know the answers to basic questions about the food, and didn't offer to find out. The fries were so salty I thought they were a mistake (they weren't) The other downside was that the concrete space makes for a very loud experience -- between the talking and the music. I wanted to like it better, since I love that there's a restaurant with the theater -- I myself ran a cafe attached to a movie theater back in the 80s -- but I am afraid this one doesn't get my strong recommendation. read more

Went here for a Sunday brunch and got the steak and eggs with fries - it was delicious! My friends got the eggs Benedict and the avocado toast and grapefruit. The eggs Benedict were solid, just a typical eggs Benedict. The avocado and grapefruit were kind of expensive, cost as much as my dish together....like it was good but that's kind of too expensive for a piece of fruit and bread lol. I visited The Commissary on two separate occasions; once for drinks and once for Sunday brunch. Service is not the best I've seen in New York, but I will gladly go back because of the ambiance. Being where it is, The Commissary has waves of business, followed by an hour or two of serenity as people go into one of the theaters to see a film. There's something quite enjoyable to both sides of this rhythm. If you've never been to Metrograph, I highly recommend making a trip that involves both a screening and a meal or drink at The Commissary. If you've already seen a film here, you can't go wrong by returning to hang out upstairs. read more

Off to a great start! Commissary just opened and I've been there a few times now and have had great experiences. Aside from the obvious - it's beautifully designed, of course - the food is really good. The spaghetti pomodoro is excellent, the burratta starter is delicious and it's a new and very welcome take on a dish that's become somewhat ubiquitous in this city, the side order of mac & cheese is a very creamy and yummy version of the classic, and the cheeseburger (which is a special but seems like it'll be on the menu soon) is terrific with great bistro fries. I absolutely recommend this restaurant, whether you're seeing a movie there or just want a great dinner. read more

Staff here was really helpful. Got a frizzante Aglianico on the recommendation of the somm. Liked it so much I got a half a case from WINEWORKS in Marleton. Tried to make the delicious Mezcal/Tequila cocktail at home but I 'll just have to go back to confer again with the friendly bartender. The squash blossom and Zucchini terrine appts were not just beautiful but so tasty. Steak and duck also good. Overall, better than I expected from a place at an Art house. read more

The decor is the only positive thing that I can note about this restaurant. We had reservations at 8:30pm on a Saturday night and were seated right away. But after waiting over an hour, the only food that we had gotten was our Burrata appetizer. Then, after they cleared away the appetizer (along with our plates and utensils), we were asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu. Um... WE HADN'T EVEN EATEN DINNER YET! They had clearly forgotten our food. And by this time, it was like, 9:45, 10ish. After waiting even longer, our food finally came. But honestly, it wasn't anything special. The root vegetables were SO INCREDIBLY SALTY! The steak was okay. The chicken was just average. Nothing to write home about. And then after we asked for the check, the waitress came back a minute later to ask if we wanted dessert. Lol no, the check!!! All in all, really, very little positive about this dining experience. We came for dinner on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was busy but not too busy. Our server was amazing, friendly and knowledgeable. To drink we had an Iguana and a Cosmopolitan. For appetizers we split the peach and Heirloom tomato salad and the burrata. Both were delicious twists on something familiar. For entrees we had the Swordfish and the Steak Frites. Based on everyone's suggestions we also had a side of Mac and Cheese. The Mac and cheese is crispy on top and super cheesy underneath. It is definitely a must have when coming here. Our entrees were amazing. The steak was cooked perfect and the fries were crispy. The Swordfish was cooked to perfection and had a delicious sauce and beans. For the dessert, our server suggested the flourless Chocolate cake, which was an amazing end to a delicious meal. Definitely a must try restaurant. If you are planning on seeing a movie after dinner, they will time your meal to make sure you get to your movie on time which is another great perk. read more

You know those "secret" kind of places you so strongly desire to find but perhaps you end up at a hyped-up restaurant with mediocre food? This is one of those "secret" places to me and I am overjoyed to be let in on it. Thankfully, I have an in-the-know friend who suggested we eat here when my daughter and I came into town. I loved the aesthetic of the entire place, from the minimalistic decor by the theatre downstairs to the retro feel of the restaurant upstairs. We sat in a corner booth/table with a great view of the rest of the restaurant. Our waitress was kind, attentive, and incredibly sweet. My daughter had reviewed the menu online before we went and I was impressed with the array of delicious culinary delights they offered and incredibly excited when I met them in person. At first read, the titles of the menu items weren't much to look at but never judge a meal by it's title; my eyes widened, skimming the details, and I excitedly read each description out loud to our table, and likely to the people at the table nearby. We decided on several appetisers to share and I'm thankful for a daughter and a friend with sophisticated tastes. Each bite was like a wild sensory ride, each ingredient making itself known and joining the others to put on quite the show. A simple neat whiskey cleared my palate to anticipate the next bite. I was still in food ecstasy when we decided to order every dessert on the menu and my normally sugar conscious self immediately took a vacation as I indulged in some of the most amazing sweets I've ever experienced. Each dessert was light and enjoyable. I left that evening feeling sated, body and soul. The only thing better than a meal with friends is having a culinary delight with wonderful company. When I asked what she recommended, it was all about time and that the kitchen would not be able to do on time. We were an hour before our movie and we eat fast. So super disappointing. One star as food was decent but it's all about service these days as there are MANY restaurants in NYC to eat good good. Disappointing. We made reservations for a 7.15pm dinner since we were seeing a film at 8.30. While we were seated right away, it took over 20 minutes to get our drinks and 45 minutes to get our food. So, yes, we waited 45 minutes to eat food in 20 mins! Our food was decent but bland, except for the roasted vegetables which was rushed out and therefore not properly prepared at all. Delightful skylit tasteful decor. Relaxed yet pristine. For Sunday brunch, we had salmon/poached eggs with Hollandaise,and a steak salad/ and a trusty delish burger. Plenty of enticing main courses and sides on the menu. We chatted art and sipped refills of coffee in bliss. Friendly service. Then we wandered over to the rare film book shop in the front corner. This is a part of the arthouse theatre Metrograph that has amazing roster of film screenings. And the upstairs lounge and restaurant is stellar. Has an old theatre in art deco Miami feel. There is often an after-movie rush of people in the evening after 8 or 9, avoid it if you can. Any other time, you can hang out for a while, chat with friends, read, drink, and they won't rush you. The drinks and food menus are adventurous and fun. read more

Came here a bit too early for the late night menu but the chef was super accommodating and made us the omelettes on it. Omelette was great! Also had some great fries (5$!!). Overall the service was super great and the ambiance was awesome, but I'm going to have to knock down a star because the water glasses were too small. 4/5. read more

This little hidden gem totally exceeded my expectations . The interior is lovely and has an old style Hollywood vibe, decorated with beautiful furniture . The food..well, it is amazing !!!! We had a big group and shared all the starters! I could not pick a favourite but the burrata, steak tartare and the crudo were super tasty!! Pair that up with the cucumber or the kale Caesar salad and you have a winner . For entrees the steak frites and the burger(which isn't listed on the menu ) are definite stand outs. For dessert make sure you try the cheeses and the chocolate ice cream which is out of this world !!! Come early so you can enjoy the food as well as see a movie . I love the movie theater attached, but the Commissary has some of the worst service I've experienced in NYC (that's saying something). Sadly, the space was very cool, with a nice vintage aesthetic. The bartenders (there were two of them, and about three other customers besides myself) completely ignored me for several minutes. When I got a little louder, trying to get their attention in a fairly quiet place, they looked at me, rolled their eyes, and went back to talking. I walked out. I'm sure these girls are way to busy being cool to make money for their company, but hopefully the Metrograph can find bartenders who actually care about doing their jobs. read more

The drink was mediocre, but I think what made it worse was the bartender. She was very engaging with another guest sitting at the bar but did not engage us at all! We constantly said "thank you" and smiled to see if she would initiate conversation with us, (since that's usually what bartenders do), but we got nothing. She was very dry, short and not inviting. The hostess, on the other hand was very friendly. Maybe if the drinks would have been better, I wouldn't have cared as much. read more
