What a delightful surprise! Convenient restaurant off the Kimpton hotel lobby, beautiful interior, interesting menu, cleverly named cocktails and great service. Wonderful evening. Started with a Dark Was the Night cocktail recommended by the waiter. I couldn't even begin to tell you the ingredients, but it was beautiful, slightly sweet and delicious. Their cocktail menu scores big points for clever naming and beautiful presentation. I tried the fried pork chop which was a thin breaded cutlet with a mustard sauce over a shredded Brussels sprout slaw with craisins. This entree was not at all what I was expecting, but a delicious treat. The chop was not dry, the sauce very flavorful and the slaw was lightly dressed. I ate all the slaw even though I don't typically eat coleslaw. The portion was huge, and I didn't even come close to finishing given how far off the map this was for my Low FODMAP diet. While the pork chop was large, the scallops entree seemed undersized with three large scallops in a creamy, buttery sauce with crunchy fried cranberry beans which tasted like yummy peanuts. The chocolate ganachedessert was not worth the calories. A hard to cut chocolate rice crispy treat in a caramel and peanut buttery sauce. Full disclosure I came in for the TillaMOOK Mac and Cheese that was listed on the online menu, but absent of the actual menu, due to "supply chain issues". Started out disappointed but I will give them a fair shake. **located inside the Kimpton hotel, must enter through their lobby, wish I had known that before I walked around looking for the entrance ** For starters the Caesar salad was uncut hearts of romain... nice presentation, but resulted in my launching part of my salad across the table trying to cut it up. Oops. How embarrassing. Function over fashion for my salad would have been appreciated, but it was delicious! My first cocktail of the night was the Smashing! Blackberry and whiskey? Yes, please!!! I literally texted my husband "What's bartender for "you should have strained this, I have mint in my teeth"?" I couldn't tell you if I enjoyed the drink or not, as I had to chew or pick too much of it out of my teeth to tell. "The Commoner Burger" and it's wonderfully overwhelming fry to burger ratio is the reason this review has 4 stars, it is the redemption arch of this story, it is everything you want it to be! Came here for boozy brunch on a Sunday at 130. Wasn't a bad experience but pretty underwhelming for a Sunday fun day. Atmosphere - pretty dead. They closed at 2 and were putting up the ropes well before that. Kitchen and bar also closed before 2. Waitress was great but unfortunately she was clearly being pushed to get our orders in. Drinks - got a few cocktails. Just okay. The mezcal one was best. Food -avocado toast was quite underwhelming. I was expecting an actual crab cake but it was more if s imitation crab salad. I got one with grapefruit and cherry and I found it refreshing. My dad got "The Commoner" and he enjoyed it a lot. Food: shared the pork belly to start. The flavor was really good, but I found it really chewy? I don't order a lot of pork belly (I just stole some of my dads) so I'm not sure if this is how it should be or not. Both my parents got the burger, they liked it but didn't seem to find it particularly noteworthy. Just a solid burger, like a B--not a slam dunk A+, but not quite a C either. The fries were SUPER salty, I think a little too aggressively seasoned, but it's easy to wipe off excess salt. I got the swordfish which was tasty but maybe a little overcooked. I know swordfish is very dense/meaty but it did eat kind of dry to me. Swordfish is hard to nail, so maybe just a minute or two too long on the pan. Still good, but could have been better if it was a little more moist. Service: our waiter was very nice and attentive! Absolutely no complaints here. Overall: I was visiting Pittsburgh at the end of July and I wanted to dine somewhere nice for my last night so I made a reservation for one for 8:30PM on a Saturday night. Other reviews suggested making a reservation, but the place was not crowded when I went. The dim lighting with aesthetically pleasing décor would set the mood for a perfect date night and the restaurant was both clean and spacious. The food was delicious and the service was great. If I ever find myself back in Pittsburgh, I will dine here again. Food & Drink: I ordered the NY Strip which comes with a cooked mushroom and is smothered in a brown sauce. It's not shown on the menu online but it was on the menu in the restaurant. Some may consider its portion to be on the smaller side, but it was enough for me to eat and enjoy. The brown sauce that was drizzled on top added so much flavor. For my alcoholic drink I was looking for something on the fruity side but unfortunately, I don't think they have fruity drinks. The waiter recommended "I'll Have What She's Having" but it was more gingery than fruity. I would try out a different drink next time. read more

For my entrée, I chose the pierogies and kielbasa. My husband chose the fried chicken and waffles. And my mother ordered the classic eggs Benedict. I ate at the bar one day and a table the next. Both days, service was impeccable. The food was insanely delicious and probably the bests meals I have had in a really long time. I live on Maui and have had truly delicious meals there and I can honestly say The Commoner meals will be unforgettable. I had the chicken the first night and an omelette the next. These were "basic" meals compared to others and if these were phenomenal than I can't imagine the others. A comfortable room inside the Hotel Monaco. The cocktails are good and there is an interesting beer list. There are better meals available in downtown Pittsburgh, but the Commoner is a viable option if you don't want to leave the hotel or you are nearby. The service is helpful. read more

Pretty dank restaurant in Pittsburgh. Came here on a Saturday during brunch hours and got seated right away. I ordered the Breakfast Sandwich which was a little heavy but still delicious. I got a side of maple syrup which might have been a little overboard but I don't regret the decision one bit. The sandwich has two maple sausage patties, so there is a touch of sweetness. The crab lumps were generous and had a tangy flavor that paired well with the avocado. The bread wad toasted perfectly. - if you're craving sweet, the waffle was a delight. I've been coming to The Commoner at Hotel Monaco since it opened and have always enjoyed the trendy atmosphere, polished service, and delicious food with inventive cocktails. Unfortunately, it seems that in recent years, the decor has become tired, and the staff appeared quite unkempt and uninterested in providing elevated service. Once seated, we waited quite some time to be greeted. We were given water, which we finished quickly, and it took three visits from our server before she brought back a bottle that we had to pour ourselves. The saving grace was the food. My eggs Benedict was fantastic, though I wished the yolks had been a bit runnier. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles with bacon, which he loved, although he did mention he wished the bacon was of higher quality. We ordered Mimosas for a Bunch, which was a great deal at $30 for a whole bottle of cava and two carafes of orange juice. I think I would need to try something else to really judge, but off the bat, the Grilled BLT is just way too greasy, since they confit the tomatoes and make the "L" part into a pesto, there isn't anything very fresh on it and way to much oil, so the flavors are all warm and don't really provide much depth against each other, but it's a pretty space inside, and their brunch and lunch prices are much more affordable than dinner if you want to try it. This will be kind of an unusual review for me. My experience was terrific and large part because of the occasion. So much that the restaurant had to offer was excellent, but it was at a price point where excellent is expected. The food we got was delicious (though overpriced), the service was impeccable, and the restaurant was comfortable and well appointed. Unfortunately, the restaurant was out of three of our five original requested items. With a limited menu of perhaps five entrées that was unacceptable. The wine I ordered was uninspired, but to be fair, the occasion was not one well suited for alcohol, and I only ordered by the glass without giving the wine list any real consideration. I will always remember the evening to be special for me, but not because of the restaurant. read more

In Pittsburg for the weekend! We needed to make a quick brunch reservation for 4 and this place kept popping up. I called around 11 and they had a 12pm open with no additional wait. Sweet. Got there and there was tons of space. Nice atmosphere and pleasant staff as well. We had the chicken & waffles, French toast, burger, and crab Benedict. All were excellent! The burger was on the average side but good nonetheless. Everything is a bit on the pricey side but all the portions were the perfect size. The French toast was heavy so I wouldn't recommend eating it alone, it's good to share. The crab Benedict was delicious. It had just the right amount of crab! I would recommend! I feel like I reviewed this place already but I don't see it so I guess not? We went to the hotel Monaco for a staycation and The Commoner is the restaurant servicing their in room dining. Since the governor shut down sit down dining we ordered in. They make it super convenient to order either thru an online link or using your smart phone to scan a QR code and you just select what you want from their menu, put in your payment and they bring to your room and leave at your door for contactless delivery. They were fast and efficient and everything was delicious. I must admit I was a little disappointed in the burger- the description of wagyu beef and sautéed onions and special sauce sounded amazing but when I ate it - while it was good I thought it tasted like a Wendy's double at triple the cost I expected a little more. read more

This review is a little all over the place. Ok, #1 reason we stopped here was to check out the buddy the elf pop up par that was advertised on yelp. The fact that the pop up bar was awful really started our night on the wrong foot. My friend and I stood in line for about 40 minutes to get to the front of the line. Once we were in the pop up bar it was extremely disappointing. Yes, the names of the drinks were cute and clever but they were all pre mixed, and about 2 ounces for $10. We got a drink; and quickly left. We weren't impressed with that at all. Dinner! We walked downstairs and were pleasantly surprised the wait on a Friday night was only about ten minutes. We got to sit at the chefs table which was super awesome, we were able to see where the food was prepared. It was super clean and all of the chefs seemed super laid back even though they were slammed with orders. I ordered the catch of the day, and it was good! A little fishy for me, but it was my first time having that type of fish. My friend got the lamb burger and said it was a-ok, she ended up getting bacon and egg when she didn't ask for it but I guess it was just "too much". Our favorite part was the scotch eggs! I do highly recommend them. They were made with duck, rather than pork. They are also in a curry paste! Yum! Finally, our server (sigh) had the worst attitude from the second she walked up to us that night. This was my second visit to the Commoner and I don't know why I didn't write a review the last time because this place is awesome. I loved this place the first time on my first visit to Pittsburgh last year, so much so that on my second visit I had to make sure we stopped in for a proper breakfast. This place did not disappoint. I had the Yinz Need Breakfast which came with a "homemade" English muffin which was fresh and warm like it had just come out of the oven. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and creamy just the way that I liked it, and my meal came with enough bacon to feed a family of four. My meal came with so much food that despite being stuffed, I had enough food to take home and have later for second breakfast. My brunch companion was French and a quiche connoisseur and had only high praise for the ham, cheddar and chive quiche which she said was velvety, creamy and delicious. We also ordered the fruit salad as bonus plate to share. While we enjoyed the medley of melon, strawberry, cantaloupe, blackberries and blueberries, the ricotta under the fruit seemed a little out of place, ... I would have preferred just a plain greek yogurt. We did not order drinks this time around but on my last visit I tried the Bloody Mary bar which was incredible. We stopped in to grab a drink and little bite to eat, before heading upstairs to get ready for dinner. We luckily grabbed two seats at the bar and were served by a wonderful bartender. My mom had a Grey Goose Cosmo and I had the Mixing Vodka and Emotions (on the recommendation of the bartender!). The drinks were wonderfully prepared and mine was absolutely delicious. The best part about the Mixing Vodka and Emotions was the matcha ice cube, as it melts it turns the drink slightly creamy! We decided to order a little charcuterie cone and some potato chips. The order came out quickly and was lovely! The mustard sauce was delicious. Definitely worth a stop-in for a delicious craft cocktail and a bite to eat! Dark and sexy ambiance serving up delicious food. I was having a hard time deciding between the blistered shishito peppers and the roasted beet salad and although the salad was good, it lacked a little flavor and I wish I had chosen the peppers. Not to fret, the maiitake more than made it for the beet salad. It was so delicious and I could tell that the pasta was fresh. The maiitake was not too heavy, leaving room for the chocolate ganache and it was so on point, I tried to finish it although I was making myself sick, but eventually, I had to throw in the towel. Was walking in downtown and wanted to stop for brunch. This place popped up and I decided to stop by, not realizing it was actually a super busy brunch spot in the hotel. Took a bit to get me seated at the bar, but there were some seats available amongst the reservations. Though I still wonder why half the tables were seemingly empty... Anyways, one of the staff members at the bar was quick to bring me water and then to take my order. There's a whole menu of cocktails and beers and other alcoholic beverages. They also have a few coffee options so I opted for the nitro cold brew. I also ordered the crab benedict to eat. Both were very delicious options. The cold brew actually came out very light with a ton of foam on top, but then it settled into a darker color and some foam went away. It's definitely more bitter than one might expect but I like my coffee black anyways. The crab benedict was very good! Eggs were runny when poked, as expected, and there was a decent amount of crab. The dish came with a side of roasted potatoes cut into cubes. Very nicely seasoned and not too dry. All in all, I enjoyed my meal and was very full by the end of it. The restaurant has that industrial chic kind of look, and they really make use of the black wood, matte black metal, and old school type light fixtures. We came here for brunch on a Saturday around 9:15am and got seated immediately even without a reservation, just beware that pretty much all parking nearby is metered street parking. We started off with their coffee, and dang is it strong in a good way! The dark roast coffee was very robust yet smooth, I wish I knew where to buy the beans from. Ordering from the brunch menu, we tried their smoked salmon blini, uncommon toast, brisket hash, and chicken & waffles. After trying everything, it was hard to pick a favorite! The smoked salmon was light yet rich in flavor, uncommon toast wasn't overly sweet yet had a nice pumpkin spice flavor, brisket hash was savory and unctuous from the perfectly cooked duck egg, and last but not least, the chicken & waffles were crispy yet sweet as it should be. Roasted Beets was so delicious, carefully prepped on top of sour cream and crunch. I've never tasted something like this before.
