The Conch Shack is located right on Duval Street in the heart of Key West. This place is good if you're looking for a quick bite to eat. There's virtually no seating except for a few chairs in the front and the back of the shack where you can sit down if they're not already taken. When I came here during the evening, it was relatively busy and most people were standing and eating and sharing the limited space that was available. It's really just a quick fast food type place to go for a snack during the day, and a VERY casual place to go in the evening instead of sitting down at a full scale restaurant. I had not known this until I arrived, the Conch Shack is known for their conch fritters. Conch fritters are small balls of conch snail fried meat in a seasoned batter. Being this was the case, I had to try these fritters. On their menu, the conch are known as the "best ever" served with a secret recipe key lime aioli or spicy pink sauce. Initially I was going to order a 12 piece for $14 for myself and my niece but the server behind the counter said that'd be too much food and to go with the 6 count for $8. Along with the conch fritters, we got French fries and a couple of sodas. Well...the fritters were just ok. They didn't blow me away or maybe I'm not a fan of fried battered fish balls. Either way I was still yearning for a little more afterwards. They do have lots more to offer on the menu though including lobster rolls, shrimp baskets, mahi bites, seafood platters.....and even burgers, hot dogs and chicken tenders. With so much to offer, the conch fritters just fell flat for me. This place...reminded me exactly of DJ's Clam Shack down the road. Both places you walk up to the counter with similar menus, you order and they bring your food out to you within minutes. For those on a limited budget or not looking for a high end seafood restaurant that Key West can be known for, then the Conch Shack is for you. This is a fun shack to get some conch from. It's not exactly the most welcoming or place oriented for a sit down. There is some seating but it's more about trying and tasting. I am not hard to please by any means, this place was awful. If I could give 0/5 stars I would. One would think that something with 'conch' in the name would actually have decent conch fritters. I made the mistake of not reading the reviews, only going by the average star rating. My wife and I split the seafood sampler and a fried fish sandwich. The conch fritters I kid you not had no discernible conch in them at all. None. I checked every one, it was nothing but dough. Sampler: The shrimp were so over cooked they were chewy with a dark brown color, the fries were a limp and soggy mess. The fried mahi pieces were probably 1/8 inch thick and about 3 x 2 inches in size and incredible dry. Fried Fish Sandwich: As above, the mahi was about the size of a playing card and a little less thick than an #2 pencil. Incredibly dry. Save your money and eat elsewhere. read more

Being from Connecticut, I've eaten countless lobster rolls. This was unlike any others, and not in a good way. The best part was the roll itself, fresh and perfectly toasted. The problem is that the roll was first stuffed with chopped lettuce so that it initially appears that there's lobster falling out of the roll. Lobster rolls often contain chopped celery but very little compared to the amount of lobster. To me, the amount of lettuce was excessive and was there to reduce product cost. Next time I'll pay a few dollars more elsewhere and get a proper lobster roll. read more

If you've never had conch and just want to give it a try: get the 3 piece conch fritter with key lime aioli sauce for $4.50 and ask for extra lime (trust me). Each conch fritter is slightly larger than the size of a golf ball so three is quite plenty as they are quite dense and thick. Squeeze some lime onto the fritter, dip it into the aioli sauce and keep squeezing some lime on it with each bite-trust me it really enhances the flavor profile of the fritter. The Conch Shack is one of the best places to get conch fritters in Key West. Period. Right down the street from the center of Downtown on Duval Street, you will find their fritter stand. It's a rite of passage if you've been visiting the area for the first time to order some of their fritters from their take-out window and dine on the goodness while standing -- unless you're lucky to get a stool. Enjoying them with their spicy pink sauce while people watching on the 100-block of Duval during the day or into the early hours of the morning is definitely you experience you want to have. To be honest, I think the fritters are the only thing I've ever ordered when going there throughout the years. The french fries were Amazing. Hand cut and yummy! Sadly, the Mahi Mahi bites were overcooked and the worst thing in the world is overcooked fish. I was so disappointed. Also the Mahi Mahi bites came with a sauce that they claim is tarter sauce and it tasted fine but it was not like any tarter sauce that Ive ever tasted. It was more like a flavored mayo to me. I think next time that I visit Key West, I'll try other seafood options on the island. I'd looked forward to this place and I feel just a bit let down. This is THE place for conch fritters and if you're not paying attention you could walk right by it. You order them as 3 or 6 pieces, THEN they start making them. Seeking conch can be a challenging task. My son and I were up for it and decided to try two of their highly acclaimed offerings - one The Best Ever Conch Fritters and the Danger Dog. All Conch Fritters I have had and I've eaten a lot seem to be hush puppies with maybe a hint of conch and usually they are burned during frying. Well the Conch Shack's fritters were golden brown with jalapeño and conch. They serve with two dipping sauce - key lime aioli and a spicy sauce. I will give the fritters 3/5 because as Christopher Walken says "I have got to have more cow bell" and their fritters need more Conch please. The Danger Dog was plump and tasty and is an exception to my hot dog rule because they use a unique Texas toast approach with the dog nestled in with the onions sauerkraut and pickled jalapeños (and I added the mandatory ketchup and mustard) and because the dog was so plump I give it a pass on the normal Bishop requirement "to extend beyond the bun" - we washed them down with a PBR.
