The restaurant is very small and the parking lot is extremely small and it's 1 hour parking because it's in a strip mall, so keep that in mind when you go. Their wontons are legendary. Their beef stew also mixes tendons, yum. And, you can add a side of extra liver for $2. Plus, their herbal teas (2 variants, light or dark) taste good. My second fave spot for liver congee. My first choice cooks their congee more clean. I see at times that the liver here isn't cooked thoroughly through, so I start on my order of lo mein first and let the congee rest until the liver gets closer to well done. The food at this place doesn't seem that good. I ordered the two items lo mein with wontons and fish balls. First, the noodles were a cross of being soggy because they had a slime like texture. I am assuming they were cooked in old noodle-cooking water. It might be because I went around 2 pm which is pretty late so that water was from the morning. One section of the noodle was bitter, I think it was from the gai lan. Second, the wontons and fish balls were a no, you could taste baking soda as soon as biting into it. Came back recently post-covid. They are still solid if you want congee or wonton noodles. Both are excellent. Congee is served piping hot, nice smooth texture and well-seasoned. The wontons are massive and filled with shrimp and pork (lots of shrimp). Their sides are somewhat lacking. The restaurant dining area is small and cramped, but for what this place is, its fine. Service is as you'd expect for a place like this. Parking out back is abundant. One of the better congee and wonton noodle places around here. Am I the only one who doesn't get the hype?? This place is famous for their wonton noodle soup, but I came 2 separate times and still did not like it. My bf and I ordered their wonton noodle soup both times: 1st visit: the broth was too salty and the noodles were way too soft. We thought it was because we ate it several hours after buying it. 2nd visit: broth was perfect this time, but noodles were still too soft and mushy !!! And we ate it right away this time (I only live about 10 mins away) Their wontons are definitely the star of the show. They give 4 humongous pieces of wonton and it's full of big pieces of shrimp inside. However, I felt like the wontons lacked some flavor. Their chili oil is not spicy at all either. The noodles should be cooked al dente to compliment the wontons. Overall, we were pretty disappointed in this place and we both prefer Harlam's kitchen more. Their prices are very reasonable (about $9 per bowl) and it's a plus that they accept card. My congee was good, warm and nourishing for my tummy. The lo mein was oilier than expected, not sure if it's supposed to be like that but I'm used to a drier noodle. My favorite place to get my wonton craving checked! This is a little mom and pop shop that opened a long time ago when I was still in high school. They serve a lot of the old, comfort, Chinese cuisine that I use to enjoy when I was a little girl. My go-to's are usually the Wonton Noodle Soup, the Veggies with Oyster Sauce, and the Thousand-Year Egg Congee. Now the wonton is packed with two shrimp and the soup is really fragrant. I enjoy the stock they use. The veggies are great! Can't really mess that up. However, since they do use steam, it tends to have a lot of moisture and water, which might make a mess for your takeout. For the Thousand-Year Egg Congee, I did wish it had a little bit more flavor to it. It's missing that usually wow factor and the saltiness. It's still good and is on the healthier side since it has less MSG. The service is pretty nice too. People are very nice here, but they do have that Chinese mentality that I grew up with! read more

Upon entering, you can easily view a very busy kitchen making some fabulous tasting food. I haven't explored much of the menu, as I only go there wonton noodle soup. It's so good, with enormous sized shrimp wontons and a bounty of noodles swimming in a tasty broth. It's like magic! The staff is very polite and respectful to all the guests. Although English is a second language to them, they do try to ensure your order is correct by pointing to the menu. But since I go here so much, they just wave to me and point to an available table. Not really sure what all the hype is about with this place. I found it to be ordinary. It's located in a plaza right on the Northeast corner of Valley and Garfield. You go in, order, eat and then leave. Seating is very limited and parties of 5 will probably have to wait a while. I ordered hu tieu with white flat noodle and my mom ordered the wonton noodle soup. Both came out within 5 minutes. I tasted the broth for both soups and it was bland city. No flavor at all. My noodle bowl wasn't good at all. I prefer the one Noodle City in Monterey Park on Garvey. The wonton noodles soup was also bland, but the shrimp wontons were good. You get 4 very large wontons with just shrimp inside. Reminds me of a har gow. It didn't have that much flavor either, but it wasn't bad. Since I have a mild allergy to shrimp, I couldn't eat too much of it. However, the seafood congee I ordered to go was outstanding. That was full of flavor and the consistency isn't too thick. It was just right. I would come back here for the Congee and nothing else. So good! The only wonton boodle place people should go to. They have the big sized wontons and it's filled with generous portions of shrimp and pork. The price did go up a lot. It's about $12.75 now for the typical wonton noodle soup but it's so worth it. Don't go when it's really hot because the kitchen is open and they only have small fans in there. I've been coming to The Congee for their Lo Mein and Wonton noodles for a while now. Their chicken wings are also light, crispy and delightful. The restuarant is located in a shopping center off of Garfield and Valley that has a congested parking lot, but people leave relatively quickly. I usually order the Lo Mein which comes with a side of soup. I always order extra noodles too, because, I love their noodles. The texture of the noodles is more firm in a Lo Mein verses the ones in soup. They give you a small side of Chinese green vegetables and 4 large (like huge) wontons. You can also chose to mix and match for an extra fee with Fish meatballs which are also huge. The indoor seat is very small and cozy. The service has been great when its not rush hour. It gets packed often during lunch time and there is a wait. They do to go orders which are just as delicious. Don't forget to ask for your favorite sauces to go, such as red vinegar and chili oil. The Congee serves a consistent and reliable bowl of wonton noodle soup. This place has been around for almost 20 years and the quality and method of preparation is still pretty much the same. The wontons are really big and packed with shrimp and a little bit of pork. Another favorite topping is the house made fish ball. Very few places in the SGV make their fish balls this way anymore so I always come here when I want them with my wonton noodle. But after enjoying our meal, I appreciate the fact that they focus on a couple of things rather than many. I have to say, I was really surprised at how much I liked the Spicy Salt Wings. For $10.25, you get 8 wings. They were super crispy, flavorful, and piping hot. These definitely got a 5/5 from my husband and me. I ordered the Shrimp Wonton Noodles in Soup for $10.95. Super flavorful and came with 4 huge Shrimp Wonton's. Everything was cooked perfectly and wasn't overly salty. I gave it a 4/5. My husband ordered the three item combination noodles in soup with: Shrimp Wonton, Beef Stew, and Dumplings for $11.75. Not a bad deal if you want variety and it only cost $0.80 more. What a random and great find! I was craving congee and did a trusty Yelp search, only to find a place called...The Congee! And congee do they make. This is a no frills tiny shop, and you come here for only one thing. I learned this because I ordered a side of dumplings. They were fine and clearly made fresh in house, but very bland and surprisingly forgettable and mediocre. The congee is all a touch under $10 and comes piping hot in a large bowl. As of December 2021, they allow indoor seating. A few quick notes: there is a large, free parking lot in the back. Also, this place prefers cash. I couldn't tell if they only took cash, because I swear I saw a credit card reader by the register. But, any case, I was told cash only. Ah yes, another hole-in-the-wall favourite of SGV. The Congee is known for... well congee but it's also loved for it's delicious wontons. Food - 5/5 - Be warned that there aren't a lot of options here compared to most Chinese restaurants but what they do offer, they do very very well. The wontons are huge and full of delicious shrimp. The wonton noodle soup is my absolute favourite here. So far, no other restaurant compares to the Congee for wontons. (Wonton noodle soup review only) It's unfortunate when looking for "authentic" Hong Kong style wonton soup noodles in SoCal it's always a compromise - either the noodles are cooked perfectly al dente but overall flavor is lacking, or (in Congee's case) the broth and wontons have deep rich flavor but noodles are overcooked and soggy. Even rice noodles were cooked to the point of near disintegration the last 2 visits. My suggestion is to kindly ask the server if the chef can cook the noodles firmer (preferably when they're not super busy and rushed). Also, while I appreciate the gigantic wontons and the perceived increased value relative to the price paid, I find it somewhat gimmicky and would prefer them smaller, bite-sized, and more plentiful!
