Hey sport, here's a little Customer Service 101 tip: Take care of an honest (and human) mistake by one of your GUESTS by discretely dealing with it yourself. Never, never humiliate one of your patrons. If you were my employee I would fire you. The fact that you own the establishment means that I will fire you by never returning, and letting others know about your conduct and attitude. I just want to start by thanking our server Christopher for a wonderful evening. My partner and I were both celebrating our birthday with a group of friends, and his service was amazing, and only rivaled by the taste of our food. Every dish we tried was amazing. I can say Madagascar is their best journey thus far. The Chilean Sea Bass and the stew were both the creme de la creme of all the dishes we tried. The Consulate was a nice surprise. We had low expectations - maybe was the location or the rotating menu theme... and the experience exceeded it by far. The location can be tricky if you are driving, but walking, or especially if you are coming out of the Midtown MARTA station cannot be easier. Just look for a small building behind one of the MARTA accesses and you will find it (also, check some pics on Yelp for the exterior to make it even easier). Food wise, we had some drinks (El Navegador was the best), and tried 3 tapas (small plates): Aloo Tikki Patties, Curry Coxinhas, and Korean Duck Confit. All tasty options, and if you have these options when you go there, give it a try. Service was friendly and the decor is cool - as others mentioned, has an 007 inspiration (go check the NERF guns on the bathroom, they look cool). If you are in the area, give it a try. read more

My favorite spot to both chill for drinks or spend time with family and friends. The bar is second to none as far as drinks. Each drink is amazing in taste, hard to find another spot in Atlanta that rivals their specialty drinks. I love their menu and how it's a taste of the world's various cuisines. What was so upsetting about my experience at the Consulate was that if it wasn't for the terrible wait time and the service, I would have absolutely loved this restaurant. We had a reservation at 8:00 on a Friday night. When we walked in the hostesses said the table wasn't ready so we got a cocktail at the bar. The bartender was new and forgot to write down our order. So we had another bartender take out order after 15 minutes of waiting. Cocktails were amazing! After drinks, we didn't sit down until 9:15, which was over an hour after our reservation. Also, no mention by the staff of how long we had been waiting. Finally we got some great appetizers including the eggplant "burger" and some roasted potatoes. However, we didn't get our melas until 10:30 at night!!! Throughout the night it was like pulling teeth to get out waiters attention and by 10 pm the restaurant wasn't even that crowded. Also, our waiter was so inattentive that we poured our own wine the entire night, and I think we had at least 3 bottles. Overall, the place has potential but just missed the mark. D read more

Every 90 days a cuisine is picked with a spin of the globe We believe food is the perfect guide to a city's heart, and that is all we are going to do to turn this unfamiliar territory into a familiar one. The Consulate. What a lovely place for a drink. By far one of the best restaurant concepts I've seen in a while, with a drink and food menu to back it up. This place is a great spot to meet up with friends for a drink after work or for a dinner date. I highly recommend sitting at the bar so you can witness Mike Jones (the master mixologist creating the amazing cocktails) up close and in person. The craftsmanship that goes into these drinks is unparalleled at any other place I've been in Atlanta. If you're lucky enough to get there a little early, you might see them actually making all of the elixirs by hand and get the inside scoop on how everything is made. These drinks really are amazing. They're not cheap, but you get what you pay for - from presentation, to taste, to booziness. :) The menu (food and drinks) rotates every few months through different countries, and the offerings give you the opportunity to sample delicious tastes from around the world. They also have a standard menu created from some of the best options on the rotating menu, so you have some staples you can rely on every time. The duck confit and the duck fat fingerling potatoes will give you life, but I also recommend getting a couple things off the rotating menu just to check it out. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The Consulate is conveniently located right off the Midtown Marta stop, so it's really easy to get to with public transportation. It's kind of sneakily located down and around some buildings if you're coming from West Peachtree, but most people in the area can get you headed in the right direction if you get turned around (ie - if you come in where the sign is, you'll have to head down some stairs and go around to the back. They've started putting signs up, but it's a little tricky the first time). The decor is amazing, so be sure to take some time to look around. Constantly changing a menu means line cooks never have a chance to develop expertise in preparing some of the dishes on a menu. We should have realized that a menu that comes with a disclaimer about not taking a dish back because you not like it is already trying to provide cover for itself. This was on display at The Consulate. When my wife and I recently dined there, we tried the Brasov Mici. It was dry and flavorless. The Bucharest Medallions was so-so. There was just not much going on with the dish. Even the regular dishes were subpar. The Nuuk Chops were acceptable, but not interesting. A few friends and I went to The Consulate Atlanta on a Wednesday night. This restaurant is trendy and had an awesome vibe. It's a great spot to go with a small group of friends, or as a date night. It wasn't crowded, so it was a win-win situation for our party of 4--great food, with great company! The service provided was phenomenal. Our server, Jackson, was very attentive, patient and informative of all the items which were on the menu. The menu of the food and drinks rotates every 90 days to represent a different country. The night we were there, the food items on the "Visa Menu" was from Ethiopia, yet they had 1-2 items from other countries which were part of the "Resident Menu". The food is flavorful! It's been the best food I've had yet in Atlanta! We ordered the Key Sir Alicha Salad, Iron Skillet Eggplant Cheese Dip, Brussel Sprouts, Thai Okra, and Shrimp Tibs. Their plates are served as tapas style, therefore we ended up ordered the Iron Skillet Eggplant Cheese Dip twice because we enjoyed it that much! First off the interior is to die for... literally the perfect backdrop to a date. I would come back alone for the the atmosphere. Very sexy and intercontinental. We also enjoyed the food, my husband and I ordered 5 tapas which were more than enough. We really enjoyed the Ethiopian plates and some of their classics of the resident menu. Their cocktails were impressive and would rank among some of the best I've had at a restaurant. Minor things that would really help would be service and the dessert menu. Service was polite if a little slow and the dessert menu didn't seem to match the rest of the food menu. Mostly offering sorbets. I went to Atlanta for my birthday with my best friends and we were recommended this spot ! We were running super late as usual and the kitchen literally closed at 11 and we got to the place a little after 11, yet they were so accommodating !! What I'm comparing it against: fine-dining places in mid-market, mid-size cities. Vibe: The interior is as "Instagram-friendly" of an interior as you'll see in any building...truly beautiful inside. Medium-sized, but with various compartments (and even at least one private room) that add to the intimacy. Music seemed a mix of both domestic and international ambient-type stuff that fit in well with the interior--not too loud. I can't imagine giving anything less than 5 stars for the vibe. Dim lights with teal, brown and maroon colors. Food: I got these croquettes that were a hybrid of Brazilian and Indian food--this is mostly a fusion place. I normally don't like fusion food, but these really, really good. The hamburger, however, was too overbearing because no vegetables were used to "lighten the mood"...you're simply bludgeoned with meat and gouda cheese...too rich. The menu changes a lot, so keep that in mind. My gin cocktail was wonderful...still thinking about, and I'm comparing it to great cocktails had in Chicago and NYC. Also a pretty solid wine list with even some dessert wines. Service: So this is the area that keeps The Consulate from getting 5 stars from me. First, let me state that everyone was nice and trying real hard, so I think this may be more an issue of organization and strategy than attitude. Also, the person I had was new (and made a point of saying so, which was annoying), and I'm not sure if I can say if she was all that "sharp." The server at the table next me, however, was very sharp--anyone that can use the word "varietals" effortlessly and correctly when talking about the wine list is good at what they do. The biggest issue I noticed, though, was once the bartender made a drink, it would stay at the bar for a while until it was communicated to the server that it was ready to go to the customer. This process repeatedly took longer here than it takes at most places. Also, I'm certain I was brought the wrong wine since the dessert white wine I ordered was, well, a red. Overall: Some hits, some misses, but the misses generally pertained to service issues that can be rectified (mainly by smoothing out communication between staff). I would actually come back here again since the interior and vibe were great, my first dish was really good and my first cocktail was great. I'll end by saying that I would prefer to see The Consulate succeed because I do feel that Atlanta's dining scene is better with it than without it. read more

Exceptional service and attentiveness by our server, Jackson. They rotate half of their menu based on a random spin of a globe (Visa menu), but also have a more long-term menu (Residential). Their Visa theme this quarter is Ethiopian, which I have not had before. I seriously wish I could have tried everything in the menu. Their plates are served tapas or "small-plate" style, but they hesitate to recommend a certain number of plates per person or group as their portions change depending on the selection. You really just have to gauge your hunger with your server, who will be glad to walk you through that. The cocktails: absolutely amazing. I tried the Honeymoon, but the winner was definitely the Kunpat (spelling might be wrong...but it's their Merlet contest award-winning drink of the moment). My friend and I got the egg rolls, beef tibs (no, not tips), and timatim salad (not pictured). The ingredients are so savory and fresh. They have this very delicious flatbread called injera that I loved but my friend did not care for as much. Atmosphere is divine: amazing decor and dramatic, dark interior without being stuffy. I also happened to notice that their decor covers every bit of spare wall and is very nicely cleaned and maintained as I did not see any inch thick layers of dust on anything the way you might at other places. This is a relatively new restaurant and a hidden gem. The atmosphere is fantastic, and the semi-private room where my party makes you feel like your sitting in your rich, eclectic great aunt's library lol. The menu is a nice spin on the typical Spanish-inspired tapas, and the menu changes every 90 days to focus on flavors from a different country. It just switched to Guam for the spring. The Consulate is a space that immediately makes you feel the intention of the curators. For being upscale it is neither stuffy or pretentious. Our server, Wesley, was the epitome of a quality server. My husband enjoyed his burger, and the brioche bun on which it was placed. I devoured my duck confit that was done in a Korean barbecue style. I love the concept of this restaurant! Every 90 days, they choose a new country and a portion of the menu is dedicated to that country's cuisine. The other two-thirds of their menu consists of items from previous countries that were a success. So cool! All of their plates are tapas-style, so I would definitely recommend trying a few different dishes and sharing family-style. When I ate here, we were in Russia. Guam is up next! My friend and I tried the kale salad, brussels sprouts, burger, duck confit, and scallops. Everything was super tasty, but the scallops were underwhelming. I've heard good things, but they just tasted really bland and tasteless to me. Maybe it was just that day. Yes, yes, yes. This place had been on my list for a long time, and I was delighted when my family decided on going here for a Mother's Day dinner out this weekend. From the moment we walked in the door everything exceeded expectations, from the friendly staff, to the seating, the decor, our server, the drinks, and the food. It was all spot on. Our large, half-moon booth faced the inside of the restaurant and provided the perfect setting for sharing plates. And I feel like we totally scored with our server, Jackson, who was not only a server and a bartender (mixologist) but a wine expert (which came in handy). I knew Jackson was more than alright when he seemed unfazed by my husband's high-maintenance drink request (don't ask, please; I would have to roll my eyes). We started with craft cocktails which were all delicious and well though out. I've seen reviews scoffing at the price ($13) but come on, people. These are quality, hand crafted cocktails. $13 is fair. While we were visiting, the menu was Spain, so we started with an assortment of olives and patatas bravas (fried cubes of potatoes drizzled with cheese sauce - OMG we almost ordered a second round) from Spain, and the nshima patties from the Resident menu. We also ordered the okra, but it didn't arrive and we completely forgot about it until we were in the car on the way home, so oh well...next time! For entrees, we ordered the scallops from the Resident menu, and the squid ink pasta, the Moroccan snapper, and the the American NY Strip from the Spain menu. Everything was so good and flavorful. I cannot get over the sauce that topped my snapper - I seriously could have enjoyed a bowl of that. The combination of spices was perfect, and the slightly citrus undertones tied the spices into the fish perfectly. For dessert, we had the coconut pistachio cardamom sorbet, and the Youtu box which was taro brownie chunks with taro sorbet on top. These were some of the best desserts I've had. I get so tired and bored with all of the typical desserts at restaurants, so to enjoy unique, new flavors was such a welcome surprise. We will definitely be back not only for the delicious food and fabulous drinks, but for the outstanding service and super cool atmosphere. If you haven't been here, you are missing out! read more

Went for the China experience Food and drink- were great! V tasty. I did find that the smaller plates were better than the big plates. Which makes sense for a tapas place. Drinks were yum also! Waiter recommended a gin drink that was lovely. Which was probably the only thing he did well. Service - soooo sloooow. I certainly would have had two or three more drinks but he didn't stay on top of that and literally came to our table only a handful of times. Lastly, and I'm not being dramatic: We waited for our check for at least and hour (mind you with no food OR drink). I asked several times for it; even asked the hostess and finally went and found the owner. Almost ruined the evening. Lost my buzz which was disappointing since I spent $60 to get one in the first place Establishment- great. It's kind of a hidden gem. Not the easiest to find and I loved that. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and this place was recommended to me by a close friend. My friend has never steered me wrong and let me tell you he still hasn't. This place serves a delicious seasonal menu BUT absolutely suffers from bad service. I feel as if the night was pretty much a waste. When we arrived we were seated in a nice booth. Once seated it took a while for any server to notice us. We watched what seemed like a very unorganized wait staff served multiple tables with no organization. We started so strong with satisfaction of the restaurant. This place has so much potential! In the years of my parents owning a restaurant and frequently dining out I have never seen such lack of organization. The wait time between dishes, that were ordered all at the same time, was insanely long. Saving grace of this place was the food and our server Chris, but even then there's only so much the food can save. What was even more mind boggling is how the owner was in the restaurant and on the floor but customer connection was definitely not there. He came by our table to ask for the menus back and not once asked how things were or if we needed anything. That was EXTREMELY disappointing. I do not want being busy to be an excuse because the bar was the busiest part of this restaurant and we got our cocktails much quicker than anything else. So despite being busy, the problem lies with the kitchen and their service/ production. Once this improves, this place can really be amazing. The great drinks, food, atmosphere, and location. They just lack excellent service. I never use my yelp to write reviews... I'm usually an observer but this place made me feel the need to express my disappointment. read more

We went to this restaurant Saturday celebrating my wife's birthday. We ordered 3 appetizers and 3 entrees. The appetizers were great and 2 of the entrees were great, but my wife was very disappointed with her meal. That was the beginning of my problem with this restaurant. They have a no refund or I guess replace policy; so if you receive a meal that you find disgusting you are stuck with paying for it even if you can't eat it. We spoke to the manager who was less than helpful and quite arrogant in his response about the problem. He eventually took half off my wife's meal, but I still had to pay for something we could not consume. I later post about our experience on another site and he decided to comment again very arrogantly and misrepresenting the situation like it's our fault that we didn't like something and dared speak on it. This man has no business working in the service industry with such an attitude. So this is why I'm posting on here. I rarely post reviews and the few times I have it's been positive. But I want people to know this horrible experience and know what they will get if they dare not like the food and service at the the consulate. Again to be completely fair and transparent 4 items that we ordered were great. After horrible service, being disappointed with our meal and just wanting to get out, the check came and we got charged $30 per martini because their bar martini called the Monkey 46 is $30. We specifically asked to not get the Monkey 46. We spoke with the manager and he said the waitress put in the upchsrge for the gin at the bar so there was nothing he could do . The kicker - he tried to give us dessert drinks to make up for it and said that The Fox Theater also charges $30 for martinis. Horrible service, horrible food, horrible business practices. I'm visiting Atlanta and my friend has been dying to try The Consulate. We came about 7pm this evening and waited in the bar for a few before we were seated. From the time Mariah greeted us, we were well taken care of. I jokingly asked for a tasting menu of everything and she said it was actually a possibility and got us started. My wife and I went there for the first time to celebrate Valentines Day. We loved the menu, atmosphere, food and drinks. Service was good and slightly slower than I expected for initially not being that busy but we didn't mind because we weren't in a rush and were enjoying ourselves. Ok. I was afraid of this Restuarant after having read the reviews and looking at the menu. I hate tapas restaurants and didn't want to waste an evening in one (hint=not a tapas place and should not have been advertised as one). Almost all of the posts talked about the decor and the nerf guns in the restroom. I figured if this was the memorable thing about the place, the good must be awful. After getting shut down on my first four choices in this part of town I called and got a reservation. It was a pleasant surprise. The food was tasty and well thought out. I had ribs which were cooked in the manner of Guam cuisine. Tasty. Go there soon.
