So sad they're closing 1 June. The next two days are the last day of business so good had the halibut and crab cocktail for an appetizer over the top. My sister in law had the salmon. My brother had the lobster on the skewer#EpicDinner sad to see it go

One of the jewels in Newport Beach is The Crab Cooker, which has been owned and operated by a family since 1951. Their slogan says: "Searching out the world's finest seafood for you is a pleasure for us" - how can I not be interested in trying it? Fisherman's bread Hand kneaded & baked fresh daily. House-made secret family recipes: Clam Chowder Hand-filleted Smoked salmon, brined and smoked in their own smokehouse. Fresh fish of the day, Halibut cooked with mesquite wood and light spices, with world-famous Romano cheese potatoes and homemade coleslaw.

The Crab Cooker is located on the corner in a strip mall with plenty of parking. I came here tonight for dinner with a couple of friends. There was no wait and were seated right away. As soon as as you step in the restaurant, there is a case of fresh seafood to the right and a seating area to the left. There are two rooms with seating. The service from the host and the server was excellent. They were very friendly, personable, and knowledgeable. The food was okay. Clams and oysters are only available from October through April so that was out. The King Crab, which we thought about ordering, was over $100 a pound at the time. We weren't sure if it would be worth the price and passed. We ended up ordering bread and calamari for starters. The bread was basic bread, calamari was good. I ordered clam chowder and was informed by our server that was it Manhattan clam chowder. It was good, but tasted more like creamy vegetable soup than a clam chowder. I ordered a combo plate for my entree. My friends got crab cakes and steamed mussels. The crab cakes and the combo plate comes with a choice of two sides. We both chose the coleslaw and cheesy potatoes-both were fine. The combo plate I got had some seafood seasoning on it and there was also tartar sauce on the side. The seafood that came with my plate was cod (or some other kind of white fish), shrimp, and a scallop with some onions and a cherry tomato mixed in on a skewer. If you're hungry, it's not a lot of food. I had plenty of other things to eat so I was fine. All of the food comes on paper plates, the soup came in a paper cup, the utensils are all plastic. Overall, I don't think I would dine here again. All of the plastic and paper items feel wasteful, I didn't get much actual seafood, and the flavor of everything was alright. I would like to emphasize that the service was really great, the food was not.

Take home case is freshest fish in town. The fish monger is quick and friendly service. The large fish hanging through the shanty themed ambiance. I can recommend everything in the take home case.

Sometimes you just miss out on a place because you never grew up around and because it's such an institution that it doesn't get talked about as being a place with buzz. The folks that know it's worth just keep going, leaving the folks that are on the lookout for new places to try to stumble upon it on their own. Lucky for me I know somebody who grew up with to mention to it in passing because this place is fantastic. I like seafood boils as much as the next person, but sometimes you need a place just to get some fresh grilled or fried seafood that isn't California Fish Grill. And this is that place. From the famous Manhattan Clam Chowder to the cheesy potatoes, to the awesome effing skewers of cod, shrimp, and scallops--every bite just hit right. The scallops especially were amazing, and that's from someone who doesn't usually like scallops. The only quibble I had was that the fish portion on my skewer was a little lacking, but it wasn't even by that much. And by the end I got full anyway. I was just thinking that distribution of the seafood was far heavily skewed to shrimp, then scallops, then the cod, and I would've liked it more equitable. The space was super thematic and on point; I felt like I was right on the pier, despite being a good fifteen miles from the ocean. And my server especially was chill and made me feel relaxed. She even had an ongoing bit about my drink refills that was hilarious every time. Everyone at the table thought she was the best at her job. I will definitely stop by here again and again, as I'll always need seafood and now I know where to get some done how it's supposed to be done.

My family has been coming to The Crab Cooker in Tustin for many years, and we love it! I appreciate that the food is always consistent, throughout the years they have maintained the quality and flavor of their food. I love the menu's simplicity, while still offering a variety of options. The quirky decor adds to the ambiance of the restaurant and vintage nautical vibes. Our favorite menu items are the clam chowder (Manhattan style!), the grilled fish (all varieties), coleslaw, and potatoes! Cooked to perfection every time, and the service is always fast and friendly.

The food here was a mixed bag. My daughter liked her crab cakes, but hubby likes his with more crab chunks, not so smooth. My crab chowder was not the white New England, which I should have paid more attention to. It was more like a tomato veggie soup. Again, it was ok, but I really had to search for any actual crab pieces. The prices were high, so I expected better. Probably try somewhere else next time.

Service was ok..it was chewy and hard. Not satisfying taste.. it is not worth the price. Place was pretty empty. I should of trust the vibe.

Their scallop bacon skewer with fluffy soft oh so yummy pilaf rice was sooo good and perfectly cooked and so flavorful with a side of melted butter. Their smoked fish is not too fishy and not too smoky but so good with their amazing tartar sauce.

Awful. Greta service but seriously???? Paper bowl and plastic utensils and cups? For the price we paid? A joke. Then the food... Worst chowder ever. Seriously. Tasted like preservatives and chewy clams. Overpriced crabs. Good crabs but forget the pricing and presentation. Just have some class please! Or don't pretend to with the ambiance and prices do some dishes! Yuck. Never again.

This is one of our favorite seafood restaurant. We started with their loaf of French Bread and a cup of their amazing clam chowder. My wife ordered the cod skewer and I ordered the halibut. We both got the cheese mashed potato and the coleslaw. Everything was amazingly great!!!!

I've been coming to Crab Cooker in Tustin for many years, and I've always loved the food and the atmosphere. Unfortunately, this was the first time I had a disappointing experience. We ordered the halibut with mashed potatoes wrapped in cheese, but when it came to the table, the potatoes were burned. I even took a picture because it was that noticeable. When I very politely mentioned it to our waitress, instead of offering to replace it or apologize, she snapped back and said, "That's how it comes" in a very rude manner. I was honestly shocked. After years of great visits here, I never expected to be treated that way--especially over something so small that could have been easily fixed. A simple, kind response and replacement would have made all the difference. I truly hope management sees this and takes it seriously because this restaurant has always been a wonderful place, and I'd love to keep coming back for many more years.

old family favorite restaurant. Tustin location is right off the 55 freeway. clam chowder and the loaf of fresh sourdough bread is terrific, especially on a cold day. also had a large shrimp cocktail tonight. family owned restaurant that has been around since the 1950s. I've eaten at the Newport location since the 70s, now the Tustin restaurant is closer to home. I usually order a plate of Skewers but tonight I was feeling nostalgic and ordered a bowl of clam chowder, a loaf of sour dough bread, and a large shrimp cocktail order. They no longer offer the chowder in a bread bowl but when I asked the server offered to bring me the bread prepared to be used as a bowl. That's what I did, pouring my bowl of chowder into the bread bowl. Fantastic, reminds me of my days surfing in Newport in the winter when the ocean was cold nothing warmed you up like a bread bowl of crab cooker clam chowder. Ambiance is fun, lots of fish mounts including a white shark that was harpooned off the Newport pier in the 50s or 60s. Prices are reasonable and the fish is good quality and tasty.

When making reservations a $25 deposit is required per person but will be applied to your bill day of visit. The hostess was very kind upon check in and took us to the back where the 46 door is. She provided us a code and explained the time limit along with house rules. We were then told to knock on the door and proceed with the experience. Kudos to the owner as this is the only speakeasy in the OC that has a true speakeasy feel entrance. They had a gentleman open the peephole and ask for the entry code. Once we said the code we entered a really cool mine shaft area. The attention to detail was on point and I was impressed! We were then taken upstairs to a private bar where there are four tables of four so a max of 16. This makes sense as to why reservations are hard to come by. The only ding about seating is you are sat with strangers it is not a private table. Luckily we had a fun older couple at our table so it made the conversation more lively. Otherwise don't go here with an expectation of an intimate/ private date night. They also offer a limited food menu but looked very promising. However, we were here for a night cap so just dabbled in drinks. The bartender had a seasonal menu of 4 cocktails he created. He explained the drinks and then had us try each one with a straw. We then placed our order based on what we liked. He did say if we were not a fan he could create us our own personal cocktail as well. The old fashion he created was phenomenal! Overall, a cool little spot in the OC. Do wish they were open later as they do close at 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

We went ahead and ordered the ahi tuna taco, pork belly bao, garlic fries, the margharita pizza, the yuzu lobster pasta, and for drinks I got the virgin burning thyme. My friend got that and other drinks as well. Ahi tuna taco - 5/5 probably the best food item for the evening. The tuna was fresh, perfect amount of kick in its sauce, and the outter shell was perfectly crunchy. I think them replacing the shell with wonton was exceptional with the texture. Every bite was extremely satisfying. Pork Belly bao - 4/5 everything was delicious. The bow itself is bouncy and moist. There wasn't anything special about the sauce inside with the pork belly, but I would definitely give it a try at least once. A great portion with your friends or family as an appetizer. Garlic fries - 3/5 It was a bit underwhelming, but nothing horrible. I could not taste the garlic at all, but the fries itself was cooked to perfection with the outer being pretty crispy and inside being soft. Margharita pizza - 4/5 I really like the crust and the breading of this pizza. It was crispy and the pepperoni was cooked to perfection. I really like the small pepperoni because it gives an immense amount of flavor in each bite. The cheese and the tomato sauce was fine, but nothing special. Yuzu lobster pasta - 4/5 I wish I was able to taste more of the Yuzu since that's in the name of the dish, but I could not. If it was just called the lobster pasta I would say it's amazing. The tomatoes were perfect to lighten the entire dish with the heavy sauce and the pasta. The lobster was cooked fine. Other than that it was fine, but I would say either enhance the Yuzu flavor or remove it in the name of the dish. Burning thyme - 4.5/5 I really like the acid and the balance of sweetness and sour in this drink. Usually, I get skeptical when I make an alcoholic drink version because the bartender tends to over sweeten the drink, but this was not the case, and I enjoyed it a lot with our food.

The tasting featured a great lineup of green and yellow Chartreuse paired with small bites. It concluded with a complementary Chartreuse-based cocktail from one of five recipes. Brand ambassador Taylor guided the event and began by telling us about the unique history of Chartreuse. The tasting started out with a small spoonful of Vegetal Elixir Chartreuse to warm up the palate. This is the base spirit of both green and yellow Chartreuse and clocks in at 138 proof. It was surprisingly not harsh, but immediately kicked my salivary glands into overdrive. I didn't even know that vintages of Chartreuse was a thing, but Taylor walked us through tasting three different vintages of both yellow and green Chartreuse, and it was surprising how different they were. The lineup concluded with more rare varietals of the green elixir 1605 and yellow cuvee. Great job, thanks Taylor! Chef Kling presented each small bite which included a crispy Icelandic cod, a roasted beet crostino, and a lamb slider. All of them had a five star list of ingredients and were delicious. Strong Water is known for their excellent cocktails, but their food is also great. For my cocktail at the end of the event, I had the Bar Flower (Green Chartreuse, Crème de Cacao, Pineapple, Lime). This was so good, with the herbal and chocolate flavors perfectly balanced. It was served with a flaming lime half. This was such a great event! Chartreuse retails for around $100 a bottle, and the higher-end varieties cost even more. At just $45 per person, this event was an amazing bargain. Strong Water frequently hosts great events, so keep an eye on their social media for upcoming dates. I really love Chartreuse, so I went back a few days later on the last day of Chartreuse week to try a few of the other limited time cocktails. I started out with their twist on a Grasshopper (Chartreuse, Crème de Menthe, Chili Liqueur, Crème de Cacao, Cream, Cane, $22). This was a great classic Grasshopper, but the Chartreuse added a herbal complexity, and there is a dash of heat on the finish from the chili liqueur. Next I had the Flare Gun (Yellow Chartreuse, Overproof Rum, Italian Bitter, Lime, Cane, $20). The yellow Chartreuse definitely comes through, but it's softer and has a light sweetness, unlike the green variety. Even though it contains overproof rum, it is perfectly balanced and not boozy at all. I usually don't like bitter drinks, but the bitterness was at a perfect light level. I finished off with the Tales from the Black Lagoon which is my favorite drink here, and it's also a favorite of many of the bartenders. All three cocktails were a home run. Chartreuse is an expensive spirit, so those drinks cost a little more than average. Shout out to Karen, Joey, Edgar, Jordan, and Ying for excellent hospitality, as always. Strong Water is our favorite place. We can't wait to go back!
