Ever since the Crab Shack opened on Rt. 2 in Edgewater I've been intrigued, but let's face it, the building doesn't have much pizzazz. Last night was girls night so we finally decided to give it a shot. First let me say it's not fancy but what I will say is the food was excellent AND if you sit at the bar you get to shoot the breeze with Scott who runs the joint. They make a mean orange crush and the prices are excellent! Great onion rings, fries and hush puppies. We had the crab legs, crab cakes and I had a crawfish boil with spicy Cajun butter that was so good. First time visiting the Crab Shack. I ordered the Baltimore steamed shrimp with onions and a bowl of seafood chowder. The chowder is a tomato based soup. There were two shrimp, one crawfish, and a clam and mussell. My problem was the crawfish tail meat was mushy (out of season and obviously frozen) and I had one empty clam shell and one empty mussel shell. I was told that they just fell off into the soup. They did not. They just weren't there. To the restaurants credit they brought me one clam and one mussel in a cup. So in a $9 bowl ( not a cup) there is supposed to be one clam, one mussel, one crawfish and two shrimp. What do you get in the smaller cup of seafood chowder? The Baltimore Shrimp had zero onions and the shrimp were so-so. They were already butterflied so I suspect frozen and not fresh. Added a Miller lite and a $5 tip to the $35 bill. Not worth $40. Disappointed. Should have gone to Davis' Pub in Eastport. read more

I would give 4.5 stars if I could. I just finished my first meal from there (carryout). First, I called and the employee was polite and efficient. I ordered the mussels and the fried cod (beer battered) sandwich on a potato roll. Both the items were terrific: the mussels were done perfectly and had a nice white wine (and garlic I think) sauce and the cod sandwich was just was I wanted. Went there for the first time. Wasn't sure what to expect but it was great. We got the Colossal crabs. The guy said they were really meat and just came in. They were the largest crabs I've ever seen and super meaty. They didn't have tons of seasoning but we just asked for more old bay and we were set to go. I got the all you can eat and she never asked me for a refill for my drink or crabs I had to go up and ask and I've been waiting for 35 minutes for my crabs. It's a legit go up and order yourself. We both got waters and it tasted like metal. No one came to ask if we wanted more alcohol beverage or ginger ale that was behind the bar. The crab dip was straight cream cheese no crab at all. Menu called oysters "hugh"; they're a decent size but as far as cooked oysters are concerned, I've had bigger ones in other establishments that don't even bother calling themselves big. Crab cakes were good, just a bit small given the price point. Sides were good, just not something to rave about. The oddest thing about the place is the smell in the dining hall and restroom.... Buyer beware! Watch your food weights! We were happy to find a place selling crawfish, having come from the south where we regularly ate them. We ordered them in the store and purchased them at the local seafood market, so we're familiar. The typical price down south was $8/lb. I understand being farther north, there would be a surcharge on the mudbugs. The menu price here is $13/lb. We ordered three (3) pounds for $39, and being experienced crawfish eaters, knew they looked short when they arrived, so we pulled out our new kitchen scale and weighed them. Some people may argue that "food loses weight" when it cooks.... but I highly doubt pre-cooked, previously frozen crawfish, lose 2/3rds of their weight when boiled, when most of their body weight is their shell. I might even think that when salt water gets inside the crawfish shell, it could add a little weight coming out of the boil.... But I'm no scientist. So we paid $39 for 1.124 pounds of crawfish. Either the scales are WAY off and need recalibrated, or the customer is not getting what they're paying for. To end on a good note (hence, two stars) their crab cakes are pretty good. They are mostly meat, not a ton of filler. Hopefully they're the 5 or 8 ounces you believe you're paying for. read more

Great place for a seafood boil and oh MAN are the hush puppies tasty! I had some fish tacos and my fiancé got a boil - both were tasty. Staff was pleasant and service was fast. The last time we were there they were out of hush puppies but I will definitely be back for more! We bring friends here when we can and think it's just such a great spot. Let get right to it... Don't trust the kitchen. I heard this place was pretty good and i was sorely disappointed . Ordered 2 over priced crab cake platters. First off it did not taste very fresh. Then mine was still Cold in the middle. Not like, not hot, but like cold in the middle like it was pre-made put in the fridge and the not fully cooked. So I brought it to the staffs attention the said they would remake my order. So They took my plate tried heating the food on the plate and the brought back out the same food just microwaved it. WTF ?? I had eaten a couple of bites already. Never seen anything like that in my life. Then when i question them about that the cook comes out and says " thats right, its just like if you ordered a steak And its not right, we would just heat it up and bring it back. Not that we serve steak here." He got a bad attitude and said " what do want a new crab cake ? " at first i said yes then i thought about the cooks attitude and i told the manager i want my money back for my meal (he obliged). Didn't trust that cook. The health department should take a close look at that places kitchen's practices. Buyer beware. This may be our last visit here, and I'm sad. Really wanted it to be great and stay around. We got crab cake sandwiches, hush puppies and onion petals. Called it in and picked up 10-15 mins later (around 5:45pm). We were told come by in 10 mins. Nothing tasted like it was freshly cooked. If the onion petals were from yesterday, I wouldn't be surprised. Nothing was even warm. Petals were inedible. We ate the other food - it was $45 - but it wasn't the greatest. This was probably our 5th time here, with mixed results each time. But the only side we like is the hush puppies, and that's when they are hot and fresh, which they weren't. :( read more

Weird tasting mango (?) based sauce with no mango chunks visible (premix?). TONS of cabbage (read: too much. Another half pointaroo gone) and a nice quarter slice of avocado (add a point) and what's this (?) frozen bag mixed veggies (?) all on 3 cold, store bought, tortillas. Half point gone. Bill came to ~$15. It did come with housemade fries (add a half point) but sadly they were a bit over cooked (lose a half point) So if my math is right (it might not be. I struggle at math as much as this place does at mahi tacos) that's 1 star for the food. They hang on to two stars though just for the friendly if not overworked single front of the house employee. He did the best he could with what he has been given by the owner(s). I went on a Monday afternoon. This puts me at 2.5 stars but I'm a reasonable person - round up to 3. Conclusion: Won't be back to try the other offerings unless they nix the silly surcharge. read more

Everything we ordered last evening was great. I am very picky about crab cakes and theirs are delicious. Just as good as the popular #1 Edgewater's restaurant crab cakes. (Which is the only place I will get them). Now I have an option:) The French fries did taste just like the boardwalk fries. We do not go out much so this was very convenient. My partner ordered a variety of items and he enjoyed very much. He also mentioned their service was outstanding and very friendly. It is hard to find that anymore. The slaw was delicious and you could tell their tartar sauce was freshly made (never had such good tartar sauce) not a fan, but loved theirs!
